ADAPT, the Research Ireland Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology, with the support of Google, today announced the launch of its new online training course, AI Literacy in the Classroom. This interactive 90-minute course is designed to empower post-primary educators with essential AI literacy skills, equipping them to guide their students in the safe, ethical, and responsible use of AI in schoolwork. The course offers two key modules, AI Literacy and AI and Ethics. Through engaging activities and expert insights, it helps teachers and school leaders navigate the evolving role of AI in education. Participants will gain practical tools to integrate AI literacy into their teaching practices, ensuring that students are well-prepared to engage with AI technologies responsibly. AI Literacy in the Classroom is coordinated by ADAPT's award-winning Education and Public Engagement team. The course is built on expert input from leading academics in Media Literacy, AI and Ethics, and Digital Learning from ADAPT and Dublin City University. Guidance from a teacher co-creation panel helped ensure the course aligned with teachers' needs. This online course complements ADAPT's AI Literacy in the Classroom workshop series, providing flexible learning opportunities for teachers across Ireland. The inaugural workshop in the series was held in November at The Foundry, Google Dublin, where the first cohort of post-primary teachers explored ethical approaches to AI integration in the classroom. Feedback from participants highlighted the importance of fostering AI literacy as an essential skill for both educators and students. Laura Grehan, Head of Education, Engagement and Societal Impact with ADAPT at DCU, stated: "AI is becoming a pervasive part of everyday life, including the field of education. This course provides teachers with the knowledge and confidence they need to support their students in using AI tools effectively and responsibly. By focusing on ethics and practical application, we aim to empower educators to lead the way in fostering a new generation of AI-literate students." This initiative underscores ADAPT's commitment to enhancing education through cutting-edge research and collaboration. By integrating the expertise of educators, researchers, and industry partners like Google, AI Literacy in the Classroom bridges the gap between technology and learning, ensuring that classrooms remain spaces for innovation and ethical growth. Ryan Meade, Public Policy & Government Affairs Manager at Google Ireland, noted: "At Google, we want to equip Ireland's young people and educators with the skills needed to understand and navigate this transformative technology. Our support for ADAPT underlines our commitment to making AI literacy accessible across Ireland, ensuring that students are prepared to shape an AI-enabled future that benefits all." How to Access the Course The AI Literacy in the Classroom online training course is now available for post-primary teachers and school leaders nationwide. Lee explores into the often over looked aspects of training sessions, emphasising the importance of aligning language and definitions to ensure effective learning. He challenges listeners to think differently about their approach to training, whether as participants or facilitators and highlights the necessity of creating actionable plans that integrate learning into everyday practices. Lee shares practical strategies for fostering accountability, such as assigning ownership of action items and encouraging personal commitments from participants. By focusing on these elements, he aims to help organisations maximise their investment in training and achieve meaningful, lasting change. KEY TAKEAWAYS Think and Do Different: To achieve different results, it's essential to not only think differently but also to take actionable steps based on that new thinking. Training should inspire participants to implement what they've learned. Alignment of Language: Ensuring that all participants have a shared understanding of key terms and concepts is crucial. Misalignment in definitions can lead to confusion and ineffective application of knowledge. Action Plans for Application: Capturing tangible actions during training sessions helps cement learning. Each action should have a designated owner and a timeline for accountability, ensuring that the knowledge gained is applied in the workplace. Integration into Existing Routines: Actions derived from training should be integrated into regular meeting rhythms to maintain focus and accountability. This prevents the need for separate discussions about training outcomes and promotes ongoing application. Personal Commitment: Encouraging participants to make personal commitments to change fosters accountability. Sharing these commitments with the group increases investment in the learning process and encourages follow-through after the training session. BEST MOMENTS "You have to think and do different to achieve different."  "When you get back from holiday, the first day back it then seems like it's been months since you've had a holiday."  "Alignment of language is key, especially in a training room."  "We want applied learning. We want people to take the knowledge that they're getting in the training room and apply that learning in the workplace."  "If you don't do that, then you're going to have to have another meeting to just talk about the output of that meeting."  HOST BIO You can contact Lee Houghton on 07813342194 Lee@leehoughton.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/lhoughton/ For the last 15 years, I have been a multi-sector internal or external business improvement consultant, building the improved capability of individuals, teams and businesses. Another small abattoir has announced it's to close its doors for good. McIntyre Meats in Bainbridge in the Yorkshire Dales has been working with local farmers for the last 23 years and is just the latest small abattoir to decide to call it a day. Between 2018 and 2022 the number of small abattoirs processing red meat dropped by a quarter according to DEFRA. Right now in the Cotswolds, a group of farmers are trying to raise three million pounds to save Long Compton Abattoir from closure by buying it themselves. Why does it matter? Well, if you like to buy your meat local, direct from the farm or from a farmers market, the livestock your beef or sausages comes from will most likely have been slaughtered and possibly butchered at a small abattoir. Graham Bottley produces Mutton from his flock of Swaledale sheep in the Yorkshire Dales, and until now, has been using McIntyre Meats regularly We are looking into the business side of farming this week, now for most non-farming companies or organisations, training, appraisal and continuing professional development is the norm. But if you're a small family farm business, already dealing with rising costs, increasing paperwork, as well as the unpredictability of markets and weather, training courses can come a long way down the priority list. Ernie Richards is a shepherd from Hay on Wye and he argues that taking time out for training courses off the farm is an important investment. Mariclare Carey-Jones has been to meet him.
