It was a significant investment to hire domestically-located specialists for these roles, but it’s paid off in a big way. Beyond that, we try not to pay too much attention to what the competition is doing because we have no visibility into how they make decisions or how those decisions are working for them.” Travis recently launched "GrowFlow Live Marketplace" to Seamlessly Connect Cannabis Buyers and Sellers Through Compliant Transactions. This will enable wholesalers to grow businesses and revenue and retailers to streamline the buying process and discover new products.

What’s that? You've never infused alcohol with cannabis?  Well, Rick and Kate’s guest has. And he wrote a book to teach you how to do it yourself: "Cannabis Cocktails, Mocktails and Tonics". Warren Bobrow is a trained chef, mixologist, and Cocktail Whisperer, and he's here to talk about his journey to becoming a Cannabis Alchemist. Did you know that in the 1800’s alcohol was a way to preserve cannabis? Warren talks with your hosts about medicinal and healing properties of cannabis, why you might choose to infuse cannabis into alcohol instead of food, which strains go with which alcohols, and the process of decarbing the cannabis so it has an effect when turned into a cocktail. They also touch on what’s legal (and not). Warren is a 5-time published author and was a Speaker at SXSW 2018 Conference and Festival. He has written articles for Forbes.com, Saveur magazine, Vodka magazine, Chilled, Prohbtd, and many other national and global periodicals. He was nominated for a Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Award in 2013, was a Ministry of Rum Judge in 2010 and a Rum XP judge in 2017, and was in the Saveur Magazine "100" in 2010.

I must admit, the idea of a cannabis cocktail did not initially sound appealing. I imagined a couple of buds thrown into a shaker with some vodka that resulted in a grassy, leafy swill that left you zonked.Warren Bobrow has another idea, and it all begins with his passion for quality ingredients and a deep knowledge of how to use cannabis to enhance the effects. He came to our studio shaker and stirrers in hand to show his stuff, and despite our skepticism, the results were impressive. The podcast will give you lots of details, but “The Cocktail Whisperer,” as he unapologetically refers to himself, has boiled down his methodology to three key elements:1. Prep your bud. Bobrow uses decarboxylation (a chemistry term for heating) to convert the THCa and other oils from the plant into a bio-available form. Old school decarb was as simple as heating cannabis for about 40 minutes in 240 degree oven. Today, Bobrow uses a nifty device from Ardent to easily and efficiently decarb his bud.2. Balance: You’ve got to be careful mixing cannabinoids and alcohol, so go slow. Also, keep them crisp and not too sweet—the sugar in cocktails can cause a lot of trouble.3. Use high-quality craft spirits. This is as essential to a delicious cocktail as the supplementary ingredients that Bobrow renders by hand. He squeezes his own ginger juice, for example, and concocts his own bitters. This pursuit requires a demented amount of dedication, but if you’re throwing a party this is one way to make it memorable. This podcast will fill you in on all the details.

Amy recommends using tonic syrup (available at your local fancy liquor store), but Fever-Tree tonic is a solid backup.   Emma is reading: I’ll Tell You In Person by Chloe Caldwell, Joyride by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Marcus To, and Irma Kniivila Scott is reading: Chaos Monkeys: Obscene Fortune and Random Failure in Silicon Valley by Antonio Garcia Martinez  Amy is reading: The Gypsy in the Parlour by Margery Sharp (who, fun fact, wrote the Rescuers!) and Rules of Civility by Amor Towles   Kim is reading: On Trails: An Exploration by Robert Moore, You Can't Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain by Phoebe Robinson New & Forthcoming Books We’re Excited About Footnotes from the World's Greatest Bookstores: True Tales and Lost Moments from Book Buyers, Booksellers, and Book Lovers by Bob Eckstein The Artists' and Writers' Cookbook, edited by Natalie Eve Garrett and illustrated by Amy Jean Porter The Undoing Project: A Friendship That Changed Our Minds by Michael Lewis (pubs 6 Dec 2016) Also mentioned: Legs Get Led Astray by Chloe Caldwell, So Sad Today by Melissa Broder, Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy by Cathy O'Neil, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman  Chapter I [22:25] In Which We Learn About Fake Harry Potter Books, Bullshit California Laws, and LITSY! Eureka Books is really pretty. Check it: Antiquarian books are weird to booksellers in the new book world. Here’s a primer from the ABAA. A first edition signed copy of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is apparently worth shit. Kim’s annoyed at herself for failing to monetize her book collection. More on the California Autograph Law You guys. Fake Harry Potter books are a thing and they are... weird. LOOK AT THIS SHIT:   You’d think weed folk would dig Cannabis Cocktails, Mocktails & Tonics: The Art of Spirited Drinks and Buzz-Worthy Libations by Warren Bobrow. Sorry, Amy. Litsy is great. It’s Instagram for books. Come experience the internet sans trolls. The internet isn’t just trash, y’all. Check out #getindie for all the fuzzy bookstore feels. Join the Out of Print t-shirt club. We just made that up organically. It’s cool. We’re cool. You can be cool too. Chapter II [36:40] In Which We All Have Too Many New Yorkers Piled Up In Our Apartments/Houses, Junot Diaz is the New Shakespeare, and You Can Learn to Craft Vagina Ornaments Amy’s desert island picks: Charles Dickens: David Copperfield or Great Expectations. Or all of those New Yorkers that pile up in your house that you keep meaning to read. Scott’s Station Eleven picks: The Road by Cormac McCarthy, The Walking Dead series, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway Junot Diaz = Shakespeare   Scott’s Go to handsell: The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt The epic LOL/OMG Display: Crap Taxidermy by Kat Su, books by The Oatmeal, Crafting with Feminism: 25 Girl-Powered Projects to Smash the Patriarchy by Bonnie Burton, How to Talk to Your Cat about Gun Safety: And Abstinence, Drugs, Satanism, and Other Dangers That Threaten Their Nine Lives by Zachary Auburn  Scott’s impossible hand sell: A Void by Georges Perec Bookseller confession: Once again, they haven’t finished Harry Potter.    Favorite bookstores (other than Eureka): Powell’s, natch. Also, all the feels for Bookshop Santa Cruz. Favorite lit media: Amy. Also, RIP Bookslut & The Toast. You can find Amy all over the internet: Website: Amystewart.com Facebook Twitter: @Amy_Stewart Goodreads Eureka Books can be found IRL across from the gazebo. Obvi. Epilogue You can find us on Twitter at @drunkbookseller. Unsurprisingly, we tweet more than we post episodes. But not by, like, that much, so don’t get your hopes up. We’re v clever tho. Emma tweets @thebibliot and writes nerdy bookish things for Book Riot. Her most recent post, 25 Picture Books that Promote Empathy and Respect, is really important... particularly right now. Kim tweets occasionally from @finaleofseem, but tries to focus her social media energy on @drunkbookseller and playing nerdy #BookGames on the @ElliottBayBooks account when the store is slow.

Bartender Journey - Cocktails. Spirits. Bartending Culture. Libations for your Ears.

The Nightclub & Bar Show is the trade show run by Jon Taffer’s company. This week we take the show on the road to Las Vegas where we met lots of interesting people, saw some cool products and even had a cocktail or two!  We recorded lots of audio in Vegas and we’ll share so great conversations this week on Bartender Journey Podcast number 154. Listen with the audio player on this page or ·      On the Bartender Journey web site ·      Subscribe on iTunes ·      Listen on Stitcher Radio ·      Subscribe on Android   ·      Jesse Greenleaf works at the famous Dukes bar on Oaho Hawaii.  He gave a great talk called Aloha Attitude/Mahalo Mentality behind the bar.  I talked with Jesse after his seminar.  Among other things we talked about: o   Introducing guests to each other is a great thing to do to create a great atmosphere in a bar.  Jesse made a great point, “You are hosting a party.  At a party not all the guests are going to know each other at first.  Its up to the host to introduce everybody.” o   Jessie is very focused on remembering his guests’ names.   These are some of his tips for getting to know everybody in his bar: §  Repeat the name three times in his head §  Introduce the guest to somebody else, like your bar back §  Make sure to enter the first names into the POS o   Jesse also talked during the seminar about using the power of suggestion, for instance if you take a credit card, nod your head and say “keep it open Jerry?”  Don’t say “close it out?” because they probably follow your lead.  o   Also using power of suggestion when offering another round – his example was if Jerry is drinking a Corona, pull out another from the ice and nod your head and say “another Corona Jerry?” ·      The Book of the Week is Jesse Greenleaf’s book:  The Cocktail Handbook – Cool Drinks From Hawaii’s Hottest Bartenders. ·      Jesse is a big proponent of shaking hands with his guests.  While I was in Vegas I went to a great Bar called Herbs and Rye.  I walked into that bar & the guy behind the bar went out of his way to come over and look me in the eye and shake my hand as if we were great friends that hadn’t seen each other is 10 years.  I had never been to that bar before and never seen this man in my life, but its was such a genuine welcome and hand shake.  The head bartender and owner of Herbs & Rye, Nectaly Mendoza Won Bartender of the Year at NCBShow this year.  ·      Jason Griffen, who we first met at NCBShow three years ago, owns the Quick Strain Tin Company. ·      Free pouring vs. jiggers? We talk with Nick Hauke who did a seminar called Pourning with Speed and Accuracy.  Nick also invented the Flash Pourer which makes a small visible flash every ¼ oz.  It can be great for training and every day use too.  Bar owners liked the Flash Pourer because they can have a visual cue to see how much the bartenders are pouring. ·      Jeffrey Morgenthaler, author of the great Bar Book gave a talk called Technique Driven Cocktails. The point of the seminar was:  question everything.  A lot of misinformation gets passed down from bartender to bartender.  He had a good idea – to talk to the kitchen when you have questions. ·      You’ve heard this before right? That if you roll a lemon on the bar it’ll give you more juice.  Also, that a room temperature lemon will give more juice.  I always assumed it was true.  He decided to do a controlled experiment to see if it was true.  His results were surprising to say the least!  He divided 60 lemons up into 4 categories: o   Refrigerated, Unrolled o   Refrigerated, Rolled o   Unrefrigerated, Unrolled o   Unrefrigerated, Rolled Surprisingly the Refrigerated, Unrolled yielded the most juice.  Not by a huge margin, but according to popular opinion, that should have yielded the least!   ·      Friend of Bartender Journey, Warren Bobrow was at the Nightclub & Bar show representing Mezan Rum.  ·      In Vegas I met up with Chris & Julia of the Mixology talk podcast.  They introduced me to Mellissa Davis-Taylor who was presenting a seminar called Detoxing Your Cocktails. I really think that’s something we going to start seeing a lot more of – healthier ingredients in cocktails.   Mellissa’s web site is is liquorlady.com Toast of the Week: May all your charms be lucky and your shamrocks be shaked.

Bartender Journey - Cocktails. Spirits. Bartending Culture. Libations for your Ears.

Usquaebach Scotch Whisky Usquaebach is a Blended Scotch Whisky.  We talk with U.S. Brand Ambassador Ryan Judson. Listen with the audio player on this page or ·      On the Bartender Journey web site ·      Subscribe on iTunes ·      Listen on Stitcher Radio ·      Subscribe on Android   The definition of a Single Malt Scotch is a whisky made from Malted Barley at a single distillery. A Blended Scotch whisky is made from Malted Barley, blended with wheat or corn whisky.  A Blended whisky is made from a blend of whiskies from several different distilleries. This does not make one better than the other, though many people have a misinformed preconception that Single Malts are superior.  Education & tasting is the key to overcoming these assumptions. Cocktail of the Week: Usquaebach Old Fashioned ·      3 oz. Usquaebach Reserve Scotch Whisky ·      1 oz. Almond Orgeat ·      3 dashes Orange Bitters ·      Orange Peel ·      Grated Cinnamon Stick Preparation: Stir all first 3 ingredients with ice. Strain over rocks, garnish with the orange peel and grated cinnamon. The Book of the Week is Whiskey Cocktails: Rediscovered Classics and Contemporary Craft Drinks Using the World's Most Popular Spirit by Warren Bobrow.
