Meanwhile, Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he is designating the antifa movement a terrorist organization. They discuss how Marco Rubio signaled that Trump has given up on brokering a peace deal in Gaza, and why the Netanyahu government is telling the press that Trump is lying about his knowledge of the IDF airstrike in Qatar. Hosts Brad Fowler and Alex Higdon break down all the biggest storylines from Week 2 in the NFL and Week 3 in College Football. We cover it all — from the Cowboys’ defense getting shredded by the Giants, to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ stale offense in another disappointing loss. We dive into Trevor Lawrence’s turnover problem, Micah Parsons dominating Washington, and Joe Burrow’s latest injury putting the Bengals’ season in jeopardy. The Packers look like the NFL’s best team right now, while the Steelers’ defense has been exposed, and the Chargers are suddenly 2-0 with their defense looking like a force. We also hit on Baker Mayfield’s clutch game-winning drive for Tampa Bay, the Broncos’ late collapse against the Colts, why the Bears’ defense has major issues, and whether the Vikings should call Atlanta about bringing Kirk Cousins back after JJ McCarthy’s injury. On the college side, Georgia edges Tennessee in overtime in the game of the year, Texas A&M stuns Notre Dame in a program-defining win, and Clemson proves they might be the most overrated team in football. We also discuss Arch Manning’s struggles, LSU’s offensive concerns, and why Georgia Tech’s Haynes King and Brent Key have this team looking like a legit ACC contender.
Prosecutors have charged Tyler Robinson with 7 different crimes in the alleged murder of Charlie Kirk and are pursuing the death penalty. A TV anchor in Illinois was suspended for giving an on-air tribute to Charlie Kirk. // Washington’s hybrid-electric ferry is still not yet ready to go back in the water. The Kraken and Seahawks are offering new menu items at games this season. // One Democrat Congressman says his party uses the term “Nazi” too much… but they should keep saying it anyway.
Six of the top quarterbacks in the NFL are hurt, causing sheer panic in the fantasy football streets. Jeff Mans dives deep into each injured QB and discusses the timeline, real-life, and fantasy impact of each. Mans resets his rest of season QB rankings and contemplates whether scooping up a backup QB is a good idea in this day and age. He also breaks down what happens now in the Washington and Minnesota backfields after injuries to Austin Ekeler and Aaron Jones. As usual, Jeff counts down his top 10 waiver wire pickups for week three and sprinkles in a few buy-low and sell-high players as well. He also looks into the top fantasy performers and each position over the first two weeks and talks about who we can count on and who will fall off soon. As always, Mans has his survivor pick and backup pick of the week. He also gives out his three-team parlay for the Thursday Night Football game between the Dolphins and Bills. As the academic year gets underway, a growing number of U.S. states have enacted laws banning or restricting cell phone use in schools. 17 states and Washington, D.C. implemented new rules this year, joining several other states with existing restrictions. Scores of school districts and individual schools have also enacted their own policies. These laws range from incentives for schools to curtail phone use to prohibitions only in classrooms to outright bans for the entire school day, with different rules for different age groups. Last year, there were 36 whales entangled with commercial fishing gear off the coasts of Oregon, Washington and California, or found entangled with West Coast fishing gear off the coasts of other countries. That’s the highest number of whale entanglements in the West Coast region since 2018, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. More than eight years ago, scientists at Oregon State University began collaborating with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the commercial Dungeness crab fishery and environmental nonprofits to reduce entanglements of endangered humpback, fin and blue whales off the Oregon Coast. OSU scientists boarded research vessels and U.S. Coast Guard helicopters for surveys at sea and air to map the distribution of whales and their overlap with Dungeness crab fishing locations. The scientists found that the risk of entanglement in fishing gear is greatest for whales in April when they gather near shore to feed off the Oregon Coast, and the crab fishing season is still underway. That observation and discussions with stakeholders led to best practices and regulations adopted by ODFW to limit the risk of entanglement by, for example, reducing crab pot limits at the end of the season. Today, OSU scientists are expanding this work to include the risk of entanglement from other commercial fisheries, including rockfish and sablefish. They’ve also been analyzing scars on humpback whales’ tails and fins to better estimate how many whales are getting wrapped up in nets, lines, pots and buoys. Leigh Torres is an associate professor in the department of fisheries, wildlife and conservation sciences and Oregon Sea Grant Extension at Oregon State University. She joins us to share the latest with this award-winning effort to reduce whale entanglements off the Oregon Coast and beyond.

The Girl from Devil's Lake: A Brady Novel of Suspense (Joanna Brady Mysteries) by J. A Jance https://www.amazon.com/Girl-Devils-Lake-Gripping-Mysteries/dp/0063252635 Arizona County Sheriff Joanna Brady solves her biggest case yet, from a body in the desert to crimes spanning decades and countries, in the thrilling latest installment in the New York Times bestselling suspense series. Sheriff Joanna Brady is looking forward to the holidays with her busy family, and to celebrating her daughter Jenny's graduation from the police academy. But the family is interrupted when a body is discovered beneath a flooded bridge in the Arizona desert, and Joanna is called onto the case. A young boy was murdered, and the details of the crime scene tell Joanna two things: This was not the killer's first murder. And it's only a matter of time before he kills again. As Joanna digs deeper into the case, she begins to understand this murder is just one piece of a much, much bigger puzzle. She uncovers unlikely connections between cases of mysterious deaths and missing persons, having long since gone cold, that extend far beyond the confines of her small town and include the discovery of a body near Devil's Lake, North Dakota. To get justice for the victims and to save the town of Bisbee from a predator, Joanna must chase down every dangerous lead. Meanwhile, as a dogged journalist is circling the case and privileged information is leaked, Joanna can't be sure who to trust. Could a prolific killer be hiding in plain sight? And how far will that person go to keep his many crimes hidden? About the author J.A. Jance is the New York Times best selling author of 46 contemporary mysteries in four different series. A voracious reader, J. A. Jance knew she wanted to be a writer from the moment she read her first Wizard of Oz book in second grade. Always drawn to mysteries, from Nancy Drew right through John D. McDonald's Travis Magee series, it was only natural that when she tried her hand at writing her first book, it would be a mystery as well. J. A. Jance went on to become the New York Times bestselling author of the J. P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, three interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family, and Edge of Evil. Born in South Dakota and brought up in Bisbee, Arizona, Jance lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona. Patrick Zilliacus was born in Finland and came to the U.S. when his father became the Finnish military attache in Washington, primarily to procure weapons for Finland's war with Russia. Left on his own in the U.S. at age 16, Zilliacus worked in a steel mill before joining the U.S. Navy in 1943. He was assigned as a torpedo man on a brand new submarine, the USS Spot.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Zilliacus explains how he was almost killed when the USS Spot went out for "shakedown" after commissioning. He also details what it was like stalking and attacking Japanese vessels off the coast of China, and how his sub sunk the Nanking Maru.Zilliacus also tells us what it was like to be pursued by Japanese ships, how the Spot was very close to a major event at the end of the war, and what his future wife told him about Japanese atrocies committed against her family in the Philippines. He also shares the story of how his father crossed paths with a major Axis leader long before World War II and why he does not want World War II veterans to be called the Greatest Generation.

India's once-flourishing ties with Washington have soured in Trump's second term, marked by punishing tariffs and penalties over Russian oil. This turbulence reinforces New Delhi's instinct for “multi-alignment,” and the desire to hedge between great powers rather than bet on any single partner.Against this backdrop, a new paper by the journalist and analyst James Crabtree argues that now is the time for Europe to shine and to make the case that it is India's most promising alternative in a shifting global order. The paper is called, “Pivot to Europe: India's Back-Up Plan in Trump's World,” and it has just been published by the European Council on Foreign Relations, where James is a distinguished visiting fellow. James spent ten years as a journalist and foreign correspondent, notably for the Financial Times, where he served as the Mumbai bureau chief. He is the author of the much-celebrated book, The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India's New Gilded Age, published in 2018. He is currently a columnist for Foreign Policy and hard at work on a second book on the United States in Asia.James joins Milan on the show this week to discuss the turmoil in U.S.-India relations, the historical underperformance of Europe-India relations, the looming China challenge, and the factors which have made Europe a more “geopolitically serious” actor. Plus, the two discuss the nascent thaw in China-India ties and how Europe can avoid short-termism to forge stronger bonds with India over the long haul.Episode notes:1. Memphis, Tennessee, is the latest city in President Donald Trump's Crime Takeover-A-Go-Go. On Monday, Trump signed a presidential memorandum establishing a "Memphis Safe Task Force" and announced that he would send the National Guard to the city.During a press conference detailing the decision, Trump said that he wanted to accomplish in Memphis – and everywhere else – what federal authorities did in Washington, D.C. But the question is…what exactly did the administration accomplish in D.C.? We asked Emma Uber, a reporter covering crime and criminal justice for the Washington Post. And in headlines, the suspect in Charlie Kirk's killing reportedly confessed to the murder in a Discord group chat, according to the Washington Post, Secretary of State Marco Rubio heads to Qatar, and a longtime federal prosecutor — who happens to be James Comey's daughter — sues the Trump administration over her firing.Show Notes:Check out Emma's reporting – https://tinyurl.com/49wzspyfCall Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. It's common knowledge that many diseases and conditions have some kind of genetic link. But that wasn't always the case. In 1990, long before the Human Genome Project tied so many health issues to differences in genetics, researchers identified a gene called BRCA1. It was the first gene linked to a hereditary form of any common cancer. People with certain variants of BRCA1 stood a higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer than those without those mutations. Geneticist Mary-Claire King and her lab were the first to identify that gene. She joins Host Flora Lichtman to talk about her background, her research, and her approach to science.Guest: Dr. Mary-Claire King is an American Cancer Society Professor in the departments of Genome Sciences and Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Then, in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day, we look at the true origins of the word "scallywag," which, believe it or not, isn't from pirates but may be related to Shetland ponies. Then, we look at why we use both "used to" and "use to" and how they differ in questions and negatives. The "used to" segment was written by Natalie Schilling, a professor emerita of linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and who runs a forensic linguistics consulting firm. The Bicknell's Thrush is known for scarcity… and promiscuity. Unlike most songbirds, the female thrush establishes a territory and then mates with males that happen by. She then lays eggs that have been fertilized by multiple different males. Many of those males will stick around and help feed the young, even if they are not their own. Each year, these little songbirds make the long journey from the Caribbean Islands to the forests of the northeastern coasts of North America.Support for BirdNote is provided by Sarah Merner and Craig McKibben from Seattle, Washington — and generous listeners around the world.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Keith Bulfin was a banker, not a spy. But then came a special client–a supposed coffee importer who was actually a banker for Mexican and Colombian drug cartels. Soon, U.S. authorities were knocking on Keith's door. He ended up behind bars in a maximum security prison. While in prison, Bulfin ended up befriending leaders of drug cartels and eventually became their private banker, while secretly feeding intelligence to the U.S. government. It was a descent into a world few see and fewer survive. Prefer to watch your podcasts? Find us on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@IntlSpyMuseum/podcasts. Tensions between the United States and Venezuela are rapidly intensifying. Just hours after Caracas condemned a U.S. strike that killed 11 people, President Trump announced a second attack on a Venezuelan boat, killing three more. Washington calls the dead “narcoterrorists,” while Venezuela denounces the strikes as “heinous crimes.” With two lethal encounters in just days, fears are mounting that these clashes could spiral into a wider regional conflict — or even outright war. The Ohio State Buckeyes dominated almost all of their game against the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday night, but some repeated struggles in the red zone kept them from pulling away from a pesky OU team until midway through the second half. So why did the Buckeyes struggle to both run and pass the ball close to the end zone, and more importantly, how can they fix those issues before traveling cross-country to take on Washington in a little over a week?Ross Fulton, the Xs and Os guru from BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to discuss that and more on this episode of Ross Fulton Analysis.
The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Tyler B. Davis. Classified as a White Man, Dr. Davis is an Adjunct Professor of Theology at St Mary's University. His research explores the history, theology and practice of sanctuary in South Texas. During our recent examination of John A. Haymond's new book on the 1917 “racial mutiny” in Houston, we learned that the 1916 Texas lynching of Jesse Washington in Waco was noted as a contributing factor. This led Gus to Dr. Davis' 2025 text, God of the Whirlwind: Horror, Memory & Story in Black Waco. This work is an oral history anthology of several people classified as black who lived in Waco. Dr. Davis, a Racist Suspect, questions them about their memories and experiences with the local System of White Supremacy and their understanding and views on the Washington lynching. Gus was struck by the overbearing influence of the Religion of White Supremacy on these victims. Many of them spent decades of their life in church and/or become reverends. Much of their understanding of the System of White Supremacy and what it means to be classified as White is contaminated by Racist religious doctrines designed to make slaves/non-white people obey, worship, and forgive people classified as White. This broadcast also features Rev. George E. Oliver, a privileged black male who lived in the Waco area and considers Dr. Davis one of his "friends." #LynchingInWaco INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: http://cash.app/$TheCOWS Call: 720.716.7300 Code: 564943#
It's not easy for most of us to receive negative feedback. Even when the person delivering that feedback is constructive and reasonable, we often feel the urge to defend ourselves. This week, we look at the psychology of defensiveness with neuroscientist Emily Falk. We'll explore what causes so many of us to resist constructive criticism, and how we can get better at giving and receiving such feedback. Then, in the latest installment of our ongoing series "Your Questions Answered," psychologist Ciara Greene returns to the show to answer your questions about memory and forgetfulness. If you have follow-up questions or thoughts for Emily Falk after listening to today's conversation, and you'd be willing to share with the Hidden Brain audience, please record a voice memo on your phone and email it to us at ideas@hiddenbrain.org. Use the subject line “mental barriers.” Thanks! Our next stops on the Hidden Brain tour are coming up!
