I've been looking for a way to celebrate America 250 as this year goes by and I don't want it to be relegated to July 4th or certain events. So, I thought maybe I would search for primary documents, written for or by the Founding Fathers (and a surrounding cast of historical characters) for as many of the days of the year as I can. Since I'm starting in February, I think it's fitting that my search brought me first to a set of letters exchanged between Phyllis Wheatley and General George Washington. Below is the poem that prompted Washington to write to the formerly enslaved poet, Phyllis Wheatley. The world's biggest tech companies are facing their greatest legal and political challenges since their inception. Opening statements are expected to start early next week in a Los Angeles courtroom for what is being called a landmark social media trial. Meta and Google are being sued by a 19-year-old plaintiff, known as K.G.M., who alleges that Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and others are intentionally designed to be addictive. She claims the use of these platforms caused her profound harm—including anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. TikTok and Snapchat were also sued but have since settled the claims against them. Google and Meta deny these allegations. They argue there is no connection between their technology and addiction. There is a lot at stake; this is just the first case that could eventually affect more than a thousand other claims. A class action involving approximately 1,600 plaintiffs with similar claims is pending. Meanwhile, in Washington, a bipartisan push is growing to reform Section 230 protections for Big Tech. The law currently shields social media companies from liability regarding user-generated content. We caught up with Washington legend Joe Theismann to discuss the passing of the legendary Sonny Jurgensen.

The Columbian recently reported that Clark County recorded the highest rate of evictions per capita in Washington state for the third year in a row. In 2025, Clark County landlords filed 2,275 cases to evict tenants, an increase of roughly 33% since 2023.    Washington has passed legislation in recent years to help tenants, including a new law Governor Bob Ferguson signed last May that limits rent increases  to no more than 10% in a year. In 2021, Washington became the first state in the nation to establish a right to free legal counsel for low-income tenants facing eviction. But amid growing need and rising caseloads, the Washington State Office of Legal Aid is seeking $3 million in supplemental funding from lawmakers for the next fiscal year.    Mia Ryder-Marks is a reporter for The Columbian covering homelessness, affordable housing and veterans. Christine O'Donnell was famously "not a witch," but this guy is, and he was at the Clay County, MN Gop caucus earlier this week, laughing at Mike Lindell and casting a hex on the gathering. A two-fer! From Minneapolis, meanwhile, we're urged not to ignore the economic impact of the ICE/CBP siege. And perhaps lend a hand, if we can.  An ancient scroll, from 1987, may contain clues to a path toward accountability for ICE/CBP and other abusive federal "officials." With so much unsanctioned, un-uniformed "law enforcement" activity going on out there, it was probably only a matter of time until someone tried to take Luigi Mangione's detention into their own hands. It did not work. But on the other hand, neither did an actual DOJ effort to sanction Judge Boasberg. And not just because the effort was baseless and nonsensical! Have you heard that most Democrats are actually uninterested in shielding Bill Clinton from inquiry with regard to the Epstein files? Well, I guess The Hill hasn't. And as for things you should look into this weekend: You may have missed this Trump bribe (because it was reported in close proximity to this other Trump bribe). Anyhoo, the Senator that caught wind of that first bribe also wants us to know that something seriously f-ed up is happening over at the CIA.

John is joined by Christopher G. Michel, partner in Quinn Emanuel's Washington, D.C. office and Co-Chair of the firm's National Appellate Practice. They discuss Michel's team's recent victory before the Delaware Supreme Court, reinstating Elon Musk's Tesla compensation package, now valued at $139 billion, the largest compensation dispute in corporate history. The 2018 pay package required Musk to meet extremely ambitious growth milestones, including doubling Tesla's size over a ten-year period, before receiving any compensation. After that, there were a series of 12 levels of compensation corresponding to 12 further growth milestones. The Tesla Board approved the package, as did the shareholders with 70% support. He ultimately achieved all the required milestones, growing the company from $50 billion to over $1 trillion in four years. Despite that, a Tesla shareholder owning just nine shares brought a derivative suit, alleging the board breached its fiduciary duties in approving the package. The Delaware Chancery Court found Musk to be a “controlling stockholder” due to his 21% ownership, close relationships with directors, and status as a “superstar CEO.”  As a result, the court applied the “entire fairness” standard, under which defendants must prove that a transaction was entirely fair to the shareholders, and found the package did not meet that standard. The court reasoned that Tesla could have obtained Musk's services for less or even for free, citing other CEOs who had worked without compensation. It also ruled that shareholder approval was invalid due to inadequate proxy disclosures, including the omission of details about Musk's social ties with board members. The court rescinded the entire compensation package and awarded the plaintiff's counsel $345 million in attorneys' fees.On appeal, the defense team focused on three main arguments: Musk was not a controlling stockholder, the package met the entire fairness standard, and even if there was a violation, rescission was not an appropriate remedy. The Delaware Supreme Court reversed, holding that rescission was unwarranted and awarding nominal damages of $1. It reinstated the pay package, now valued at $139 billion. It also reduced the attorneys' fee award to $54 million. Jeffrey Epstein's entanglement with Leon Black and Larry Summers runs through the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation and its flagship project, the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), born out of the wreckage of the 2008 financial crisis. Black, the billionaire Apollo founder, bankrolled INET with roughly $25 million and installed himself as its chief patron, while Summers — fresh off his controversial presidency at Harvard and a career bouncing between Wall Street and Washington — became one of its intellectual faces. Epstein, already a convicted sex offender by 2008, quietly emerged as a financial conduit and behind-the-scenes broker for INET and its affiliates, using donor networks, shell foundations, and elite access to move money and cultivate influence. Through Epstein's foundation, funds were routed into academic projects, conferences, and research hubs that placed him back inside elite academic circles that had supposedly shut him out, laundering his reputation through economics, philanthropy, and intellectual respectability.What makes the IPI/INET web so corrosive is how thoroughly it fused money, power, and reputational cover. Black would later admit paying Epstein $158 million for “tax advice,” an explanation so implausible it collapsed under its own weight, while Summers maintained institutional ties to projects and donors connected to Epstein long after his 2008 conviction was public record. Epstein was not a peripheral donor — he was a facilitator, recruiter, and fixer who connected hedge-fund money, Ivy League legitimacy, and political access in a closed loop that insulated all participants from scrutiny. The IPI ecosystem gave Epstein exactly what he needed after Florida: proximity to young academics, international travel, visa sponsorships, and an elite shield that made him look like a disgraced financier turned reformed intellectual benefactor.
