Navigating Life's Storms: How To Secure Your Finances Against The Unexpected w/James Miles

Real Estate Money School

When it comes to money, we're often taught to play it safe. Hold on to what we have, avoid taking too many risks, and trust that our money will grow where we're advised to put it.  What if that advice isn't really in your best interest? Here's the issue: simply holding on to your money without a plan for strategic growth can leave you vulnerable—especially during times of tragedy. Imagine believing you're financially secure, only to discover you're not prepared for life's unexpected challenges. While we can't stop life's hardships, wouldn't it be empowering to know your finances are secure, no matter what happens? Being your own bank offers that control, turning even difficult situations into moments of opportunity and resilience. How can we ensure our family's future is protected? Can positivity emerge from tragedy? And how does becoming your own bank help create this financial safety net? In this episode, James Miles, owner of a Residential Assisted Living and Memory Care home in Carmel, Indiana, joins me to discuss how becoming your own bank can offer support in tough times. He shares his personal experiences with tragedy and how financial preparedness helped him navigate it.    Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Going back to the fundamentals Many people skip over the basic but important fundamentals of investments. How can fundamentals help us understand what we're doing and the risk of doing it all? -The age-old money mindset Outdated mindsets can negatively influence important money decisions and kill new opportunities. How can you break free from traditional money beliefs to make more informed and flexible financial decisions? -The bare minimum won't cut it Settling for minimal insurance coverage can leave you vulnerable when you truly need it, so it's essential to invest in adequate protection. How can investing in better insurance coverage save you from future financial risks?   Guest Bio James Miles, based in Carmel, IN, is the Owner and Operator of Willow Haven Senior Homes. With experience from Indiana University School of Medicine and Charles Schwab, James now dedicates his career to providing compassionate residential assisted living and memory care. His "feels like family" approach ensures that seniors needing care have a comforting home, while their families can rest assured knowing their loved ones are well cared for. Growing up in a family that cared for his mentally handicapped uncle, James understands firsthand the challenges of caregiving. This personal experience drives his mission to offer respite for families, freeing them from guilt and stress, and giving them peace of mind. Hip-hop education is more than just music; it's a dynamic tool for fostering student success and intellectual growth. James Miles, known as the Fresh Professor, is renowned for his engaging teaching style. By infusing lessons with content that's inspirational, intellectually engaging, and relevant to students' lives, Miles demonstrates how teachers can use hip-hop education to help students better retain information and think critically about concepts inside and outside the classroom. Miles will be joined by a panel of experts with backgrounds ranging from educators to artists who will talk about ways to ignite curiosity, ensure comprehension, and provide differentiation options for all kinds of learners. Weaving performance into their discussion, they will talk about the impact of hip-hop on their lives, how it shows up in current events, and the implications for education. At the program break, DJ Topspin will play music, followed by a discussion of James's book, Gotta Stay Fresh. James Miles, aka Fresh Professor, is a New York City artist and educator with 20 years of experience, now based in Seattle. He's an Assistant Professor at Seattle University and serves as the Creative Economy Manager at Seattle's Office of Economic Development. James has a rich history, including leadership roles at Third Stone, MENTOR Washington, and Arts Corps. His innovative Fresh Education program, using hip-hop and theater for academic success, has influenced educators worldwide. A graduate of Morehouse College and Brandeis University, James empowers teachers globally through professional development. His mission is to reduce educational inequities using the arts. DJ Topspin aka Blendiana Jones is established as a musical pillar in the Northwest and across the world. He (seemingly) easily weaves a complex blend of hits and unearthed genre-spanning gems from both past & present eras, creating a musical tapestry all his own. Born from a Jamaican father and Panamanian mother, the pulse of the diaspora in the form of dancehall/reggae/soca/afrobeat is always present in his musical displays. He's recently showcased them DJing in The Kingdom of Bahrain for the 2nd time in as many years, and has previously produced a weekly countdown show broadcasted throughout Tanzania (where he's spun 3x so far) and to other African nations. Moses Sun is an afro-abstractionist working in assemblage, painting, video, animation, and public art that explores the intersection of Pan-Africanism and the world's diasporas. Moses Sun fuses hip-hop, jazz, afro-futurism, and the black southern diaspora of his childhood into a mix of visuals that blurs the lines between digital and analog art. His interdisciplinary practice comes from the hip-hop ethos of grinding in the studio, creating multiple tracks (series of works) that he remixes into new works. His search for common ground between diasporas has led to collaborations with Seattle's Wing Luke Museum, SAM, Frye Art Museum, Museum of Pop Culture, Seattle Hebrew Academy, and Africatown Plaza. Idris Goodwin is a multi-award-winning storyteller of stage, audio, screen, and page. Currently serving as Artistic Director of Seattle Children's Theater, Idris writes, directs, programs, and /or produces relevant content for intergenerational audiences. Goodwin is the author of over 75 dynamic and diverse original plays. Committed to access and impact, Goodwin's work is widely produced across the country by professional, community, and academic institutions alike. Olisa Enrico is an artist, educator and administrator who engages the unique power of  art to cultivate community and culture. Olisa spent her childhood writing music and performing, traversing genres and rooted in hip hop as her primary form of expression. She branched out to theater and found passion for the power of story to reveal and heal. Olisa provides performances, professional development, curriculum development, consultations and workshops through her business, Praxis Essentials.

“As artist Yasiin Bey said, ‘the arts are something we forget we need, until we need them.' In this episode of Artist Mental Health Stories we're joined by one of Seattle's cultural thought leaders James Miles, fondly known as the Fresh Professor. Miles is an Assistant Professor at Seattle University and former Executive Director of Third Stone, the nonprofit known for reviving the Bumbershoot Arts and Music Festival in 2023 to widespread acclaim. James has worked internationally as an artist and educator, and was inspired to foment change after seeing so many children who looked like him being disregarded and treated like criminals by our educational systems. James sits with Nathan Hale High School Junior Gavin M. to discuss his evolution from accountant, to actor, to professor and cultural activist using “arts as a tool to navigate the systems of educational inequity.”   In New York City, he was the Director of Education at Urban Arts Partnership, where he created the Fresh Education program that used original hip-hop music and theater to boost academic success in middle school ELA and social studies classrooms. The arts-infused and standards-aligned curriculum guide he designed has been used around the world and has inspired many educators and adults to shift how they teach, work with, and speak to students of all ages. A graduate of Morehouse College and Brandeis University, James has provided professional development to teachers across the world, and has presented at SXSW EDU, NYU's IMPACT Festival, New York Creative Tech Week, Ted Talks, EdTechXEurope, Google Educator Bootcamp, and more. Welcome to the Areni Global podcast. Today's episode What the Future Holds for Fine Wine Secondary Market: In Conversation with James Miles and Justin Gibbs explores the world of fine wine through the lens of Liv-ex—the London International Vintners Exchange. ARENI Global hosts' Pauline Vicard and Felicity Carter sit down in conversation with Miles and Gibbs, discussing the growth of Liv-ex, the logistics, hurdles, technology, the expected growth of the Exchange, and so much more. More about Liv-ex Liv-ex was founded by two stockbrokers, James Miles and Justin Gibbs, who had the idea to build an online stock exchange for wine. They took their vision to the London Wine Trade Fair in 2000, along with an eye-catching Jeroboam of Mouton Rothschild, and launched the business. The introduction of the Internet made an electronic marketplace viable for a niche market like fine wine, bringing a fragmented industry together in one place and offering the potential to make wine trading significantly more transparent, efficient and safe for everyone's benefit. More about today's guests: James Miles is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Liv-ex. Miles was born and raised in Hong Kong and attended university in the UK. He started his career with Jardine Fleming Investment Management in Hong Kong in 1991, before becoming an equities analyst and strategist with Asia Equity (which later became Banque Paribas and then BNP Paribas). He moved to London in 1997 and left banking in March 2000 to set up Liv-ex. Justin Gibbs is the Deputy Chairman and Exchange Director at Liv Ex. Born in Melbourne, he attended school in Australia and the UK and then university in Australia (BEc). He started his banking career with Asia Equity in London in 1994 as an institutional salesman, eventually running the UK Asian-facing client base for BNP Paribas. He left banking in March 2000 to set up Liv-ex with James Miles. Learn more about Liv-Ex: Website: https://liv-ex.com/ Facebook: @ Liv-ex Twitter: @Livex Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/liv-ex/ More about today's hosts: Felicity Carter is Editorial Director of ARENI Global, and also writes for numerous wine publications. Previously she was founding Executive Editor of The Drop; an editorial consultant to Liv-ex, and Editor-in-Chief of Meininger's Wine Business International, published by Meininger Verlag in Germany, which she built into a magazine read in 38 countries. A noted speaker, she has given keynote addresses at top industry conferences in Hong Kong, New York, Sydney, London, and Verona, among others. Before her arrival in Europe, she wrote for major outlets in Australia, including the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. She has also written extensively about science and medicine, and has written for The Guardian USA. Pauline Vicard is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Areni Global. She was born and raised into a winemaking family in Burgundy, and she has been working in the wine sector for the last 15 years both in Europe and Internationally, in the market research department of the Burgundy wine office and the French Embassy, before creating her own corporate wine events and education company in Lille, France. She moved to London in 2015 to spearhead the Wine Library of the unique and acclaimed Clerkenwell London, a multi-space design destination, before developing the concept of Fine Minds 4 Fine Wines with Nicole Rolet that led to the creation of Areni Global. Pauline now directs all Areni's activities, when she is not studying for the Master of Wine exam or playing ultimate frisbee. Description Marcus Evans teaches courses on Asian religions at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, exploring new perspectives and incorporating different voices that help students access and interpret old texts. His teaching integrates and combines classical Buddhist works and contrasts and compares these with the works of modern hip hop artists, helping students to see ways that art, literature, and religion evolve and respond in interrelated ways. In this episode, Sarah Richardson asks him about his research and how he brings fresh voices and perspectives into conversation, taking these as strategies for greater student inclusion and antiracist teaching in the University. Quotes "The Bhagavad Gita means the Song of the Lord. These brothers, way back in the ancient days, they were rhyming. They were kicking raps.” Marcus Evans  “I wanted them to see if they can pick up on this notion of change in itself and how change and impermanence support a Buddhist concept, because that was something that was very subtle in the lyrics.” Marcus Evans “I decided to incorporate black American voices into this [course]. I was thinking about it in a way of decentering whiteness and looking at the narrative of transmission of Asian texts to North America by decentering the white gaze.” Marcus Evans "Which voices can I bring in to challenge the standard way that we do it? This is effective in itself, even in just the people that we attract to the course.” Marcus Evans “You know, when I taught my course the Great Books of Asian Religions, it was so fascinating because when I looked into the audience it was the first time that I saw a lot of black in the audience, I had never really seen that in a religious studies course.” Marcus Evans Music References RZA  Wu-Tang Clan Nicki Minaj  T.I., “I Believe” https://youtu.be/0GsVTsuPyOg Killer Mike  KRS-One Tina Turner Dead Prez, “Learning, Growing, Changing” https://youtu.be/ttHukW70TAM  Stic.man, The Workout, 2011 https://open.spotify.com/album/5LHhOmal06SQEBREgV7hR1?si=ikA7LKDlQWuy_lkW3AMwIQ  Dead Prez, Let's Get Free, 2000 https://open.spotify.com/album/7gXuElmegVReY7imkb5bf8?si=ubkZ20qGTX6UYWJzsjrbyg  Dead Prez, Information Age, 2013 https://open.spotify.com/album/1ctEzpKcYukYAOXpyXx7C9?si=WNdJii0qQkmk4-zNcb7CVg  Links to articles and books Marcus Evans, PhD Candidate at McMaster University https://socialsciences.mcmaster.ca/people/evans-marcus James Robson. “Daoism.” In Norton Anthology of World Religions, edited by James Miles. Many people are feeling a heart prompting to make a difference in their communities – and ultimately the world. We want to contribute to a sustainable shift that reflects the true values of heart-based living. We're grateful to have James Miles, PhD, an expert in community engagement working to heal and empower African American communities, as our Add Heart Call guest. James and Deborah Rozman, our Add Heart Call host and HeartMath CEO, will be discussing what's working and already making a difference in communities that need to heal and overcome separations and inequalities. James has found real change requires a change of heart, not just a change of regulations and topical adjustments. He will share inspiring stories from his work with inner city youth and adults. At first, a change of heart may sound a bit soft or even impossible, yet James has found that integrating tools and methods to access the heart's intelligence facilitates sustainable change. James and Deborah will talk about the heart and its intelligence as necessary street smarts for all community environments that want to thrive. Ultimately, for people of different races, religions, and beliefs to finally move beyond historical separations, the heart will provide the needed guidance and intelligence for all people to harmoniously interact with each other and co-create new solutions. We'll close with a heart-focused meditation that can help each of us identify how we can show up within our own communities and contribute to making a sustainable difference. More About James Miles:James has integrated HeartMath's emotional self-regulation and resilience tools into the work he is doing to heal and empower African American communities. His work has presented him with opportunities to help communities transform racial discrimination and promote sustainable approaches to community engagement, development, wellness, and resilience. James is a senior partner in the Resilient Communities Initiative. He is also a HeartMath Certified Trainer and serves as a senior strategist and evaluator on the leadership team of the Multi-Faith Veterans Initiative at DePaul University, a consultant to the Northern Illinois Public Health Consortium, and a nonprofit leadership certificate program trainer for the University of Chicago, and he conducts participatory research focused on community engagement, wellness, and African Diaspora citizenship. His professional experience includes the design and launch of community economic development collaboratives. He has held positions from enterprise systems analyst and program manager to chief operating officer and management consultant. Dr. Miles has successfully led business performance management programs, university accredited-program conversion initiatives, faith-based community economic development initiatives, international cross-cultural exchanges, triple-bottom-line business sustainability initiatives, and stakeholder training programs.

Your London Legacy
How James Miles Improves Londoners’ Well Being By Meditation

Your London Legacy

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 9, 2018 40:48

I’d been vaguely interested in meditation for years, but recently I’ve become fascinated with transcendental meditation after I read Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferris. He sent 11 questions to 140 people at the very top of their game—right across the spectrum from sportsmen, entrepreneurs, and scientists. His survey showed the vast majority of correspondents had a regular meditation practice. So, at the start of 2018 I decided to dive into Transcendental Meditation (TM), and met James Miles at an introductory talk. While I’m a bit cynical, James is a hardened scientist and was able to persuade me of the physical, mental, and wider societal benefits of TM. James is leading the push to grow the TM practice in London so we can all benefit from this ancient, simple, and natural system. Here, he talks about how he became involved with TM and his dreams for the future. “I actually turned down the Marie Curie scholarship in Stockholm and I thought that if I’m going to do any scientific research now—it’s going to be in TM.” [2:55] James had a long, winding road to traverse before coming about to Transcendental Meditation. In his youth, James didn’t feel quite like school was for him which led to a lot of what he calls “experimenting” in his late teens and twenties—even setting up his own decorating company. He still didn’t feel like the person he wanted to be and it was suggested that his unfulfilled potential with education might bring him closer in line to that path. James went back and managed to get into Bristol University to study chemistry as a very mature, advanced student—no easy feat. Still, he was feeling anxiety and stress despite succeeding academically.  After having TM suggested by a friend, and looking into peer reviewed research on the practice, he took the plunge and began to see improvement and results immediately. [17:12] Transcendental Meditation differs from other forms of meditation you may have heard of, such as Mindfulness. The first three words a TM teacher will probably speak to you are that the process is simple, natural, and effortless. It’s done in the morning and evening for twenty minutes. You’re locating this state of restful alertness, this kind of consciousness that your mind is naturally trying to seek. Once you make a habit of experiencing this state it begins to seep into your other states of consciousness throughout the day—waking, sleeping, and dreaming.   [23:06] TM takes a thought that has no meaning, called a ‘mantra’, and it keeps the mind lively—but undirected. This allows your mind to naturally go where it wants, to those more charming aspects of the mind that are seeking out greater happiness. The practice has taken off all over the world, especially in the United States—but the UK seems reticent to enter into TM in a big way. This could be due to a number of misconceptions; for instance, TM has no religious base and doesn’t alter your lifestyle. Meditation can also be associated with a difficult, concentration heavy practice—which TM is most certainly not. James is trying to change that—trying to get TM on NHS and speaking to Parliament while also amassing all the scientific research being done. Founding a TM center in London that can act as a beacon where people can come in and practice, even in groups, and help elevate consciousness not only for the individual, but for the whole of London—and the world at large. If you’d like to learn more or set up a time to learn the practice of TM head to UK.TM.org (http://UK.TM.org) – you can put in your post code and it will tell you where your local centers are. Introductory talks are free and usually last about an hour.   Support this podcast

The spectacular trial of Bo Xilai seized the media's attention last week as the fallen politburo member — still widely admired in Chongqing and Dalian and heavily connected among the Party elite — defended himself with unexpected vigor against charges of corruption, and hardly paused to implicate his wife and subordinates in murder, mutual poisoning and financial skullduggery. This week on Sinica, Kaiser and Jeremy host two guests: Ed Wong from The New York Times and James Miles of The Economist for a closer look at what some Chinese commentators are calling China's "trial of the century."
