For the longest time, Soda Popinski was my kryptonite. I couldn't beat him as a kid, and he just held court over me (is that a term?) every time I went up against him. I've finally slayed that demon, but the illusive Mike Tyson victory still evades me. For now, anyway. But that doesn't matter. Modern tough games make me crazy, but NES tough games are my torture of choice. I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing Punch-Out, and every couple years I fall into its clutches and spend a month or two swearing at little ref Mario. Before RTG is done, we'll have covered all 11 core Mega Man games. And this week we're tackling what I consider to the the most underrated of the bunch: Mega Man 7 for the SNES. I think MM7 gets overlooked for a couple reasons. After 6 NES games, I think people might have been a little burnt out on the tried-and-true Mega Man formula. And more importantly, the Super Nintendo was the home of Mega Man X, which many consider to be the greatest Mega Man game of all-time. If you haven't played this one, don't sleep on it. The graphics are great, the music rocks, and in reality this is just an NES Mega Man in 16-bit glory. And that's all I wanted it to be. Joining me this is is a fellow podcaster and Mega Man junkie, my pal Dan from the Dissect That Film and Manawurm podcasts. What we thought would be a shorter episode turned into an hour long Mega Man loveliest, as we went through all the levels in this, the various weapons, and the cheese that is the final Wily fight. We're playing two not very classics of their respective genres today as we go back to the back half of the 90s to play an early action game and a relatively early 3D platformer. We're kind of split on which game we prefer along lines I expect you'd predict, but we both had a pretty good time with both games anyway! When those put those 2 together, you get games like Chip N' Dale and DuckTales. You also the occasionally-overlooked-but-really-solid Darkwing Duck. Let's get dangerous. This one definitely has a little more bite than some of the previous Capcom Disney games. Everyone told me there's a splash of Mega Man in this one, and I agree. Both because you can choose the order you tackle the levels in, and because it's gonna kill you a lot. But I rarely found it "cheap" tough. It was just one of those games that you keep playing and you get good at. Solid soundtrack, good graphics. My only real complaint is that I wish there was more of it. My buddy Bradley McCue returns to the show this week. And while we both kinda drop the ball when it comes to our Darkwing Duck knowledge (something I'm ashamed of because I love this show), we both agreed that Capcom was in the zone back in this era. And while we may not be convinced that DD belongs in the same conversation as DuckTales and Chip N' Dale, it's a game well worth your time. As long as you're not a controller thrower.
