Today's podcast guest is leading a firm that is truly unique in the aviation world.Tom Grundy, CEO of Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) will possibly chastise me for talking about the airship comeback. The Airlander, the world's largest aircraft by some measures, may look, from the outside, like one of those classical airships of the pre-War era, however, as listeners of this episode shall soon learn, it presents some notable differences as well, the result of almost a century of progress in aerospace and materials sciences.The airship, as we all know, fell out of favour decades ago, what's different this time, then? In our chat, Tom explains some of the amazing capabilities of present day hybrid air vehicles like the Airlander: very low fuel consumption, almost no infrastructure needs, long range and super long endurance. Lighter than air flying machines predate the invention of the airplane, and open so the 1930s, were the only practical way to carry passengers are significant payloads over transatlantic distances. The combination of the 1936 Hindenburg disaster and the development of longer-range fixed wing aircraft ended the age of the rigid airship, but a new hybrid type aircraft that combines features of airships and fixed wing aircraft shows promise for heavy lift, long-duration and low carbon flight. Bradford, UK-based Hybrid Air Vehicles has developed a production ready aircraft and as recently establish a basis for certification with European aviation authorities, a critical step toward type certification. The company expects their Airlander 10 vehicle to be service ready by 2025. Sterowce to wynalazek z początków pierwszej połowy ubiegłego wieku. Maszyny te postrzegane były (i są) jako luksusowe i majestatyczne konstrukcje. Znane są ze swojej roli pasażerskiej. Używane były również przez wojsko. Ich charakterystyczna cecha był szkielet wewnętrzny (początkowo drewniany, później duraluminiowy), a sam statek powietrzny był aerostatem (lżejszy od powietrza). Gazem nośnym był łatwopalny wodór. Kierunek lotu i manewrowość realizowana była przez silnik diesla podwieszone w gondolach. Niestety po słynnej katastrofie Hindenburg w roku 1937 era sterowców dobiegła końca. Do niedawna właściwie jedynym funkcjonującym sterowcem był Zeppelin NT. Stworzony przez firmę, która w czasach ich świetności tworzyła jego starszych i większych braci. Konstrukcja nie jest w stanie utrzymać się w powietrzu bez pomocy silników, a gazem nośnym jest szlachetny i niepalny hel. Głównym zastosowaniem statku powietrznego jest promocja i reklama, a nie obsługa ruchu pasażerskiego. Obecnie największym sterowcem jest Airlander 10. Konstrukcja zaczęła swoje życie jako statek wojskowy HAV 304 stworzony przez armię amerykańską w ramach projektu LEMV (Long Endurance Multi-intelligence Vehicle). Po anulowaniu projektu firma odpowiedzialna za wyprodukowanie sterowca-HAV (Hybrid Air Vehicles) odkupiła HAV 304. Firma, bazując na tej konstrukcji, stworzyła jej nowa iteracje jako Airlander 10. Sterowiec, który ma służyć do prowadzenia badań pogodowych oraz do stworzenia nowego projektu — Airlander 50, statku powietrznego mogącego transportować 50-tonowy ładunek. Ostatnio jednak firma HAV wraz z Design Q zaprezentowały koncepcje stylizacyjne pasażerskiej wersji Airlander 10. Ta konfiguracja sterowca ma oferować luksusowe warunki podróżowania podczas trzydniowej wyprawy dla 19 pasażerów. Rozkład pokładu ma oferować kilka możliwości jego dostosowania oraz pomieszczenia jak recepcja czy bar. Co więcej, dostępne będą kabiny z pełnej wielkości łóżkiem. Przede wszystkim na wizualizacjach rzucają się w oczy pełno wysokościowe okna, które zachodzą pod podkład, czy wręcz przeszklona podłoga. Jednym słowem kabina w Airlander odbiega od tego, co, znamy z typowych (wąskokadłubowych) samolotów. Wynika to zarówna z zupełnie innego przekroju pomieszczenia, jak i jego długości (46 m).
