Dr. Erkeda DeRouen talks to Dr. Susan Baumgaertel, an internal medicine physician with 30 years of experience and founder of MenopauseMenu and myMDadvocate. They discuss menopause lessons for medical students, things everybody should know about menopause, and why men need to know about menopause too.   [00:00] Introduction [02:20] Menopause - The Forgotten Branch of Medicine [02:51] How Students Can Learn to Work with Women in Menopause [06:27] The Benefits of Listening to Your Patients [07:10] How to Educate Patients About the Different Stages of Menopause [09:16] Ways to Ask For More Time From Your Doctor [11:36] Dr. Baumgaertel's Book - The Menopause Menu [16:14] Men Need to Know About Menopause Too [19:39] What Dr. Baumgaertel Would Change About US Healthcare [22:10] Parting Thoughts  Menopause is More Than Hot Flashes Dr. Baumgaertel emphasizes that menopause is often seen through a narrow lens, focusing solely on hot flashes. However, she challenges this narrative, urging us to recognize the multifaceted aspects of menopause that impact every woman uniquely. From this conversation, it's very clear that understanding menopause goes beyond just one medical discipline. It involves everything from primary care, OB/GYN, cardiology, dermatology, rheumatology, neurology, and more.  Dr. Baumgaertel stresses the importance of a multifactorial approach when caring for menopausal patients. Each woman's experience is unique, and healthcare professionals must be receptive and attentive to their patients' needs. Yes, commonalities exist, but not every woman experiences menopause in the same way. In fact, some women don't experience menopausal symptoms at all.  Advocating for Yourself: Sending Agendas Dr. Baumgaertel encourages women to advocate for themselves by setting the agenda during medical appointments. Sometimes an hour-long doctor's appointment is not enough, and it's okay to ask your doctor for more time. By addressing specific concerns and communicating them ahead of time, patients can ensure that their healthcare providers allocate the necessary time to discuss crucial aspects of menopause. Menopause is a stressful time and you need all the support you can get.  The Menopause Menu Book: A Resource for All Dr. Susan introduces her book, "The Menopause Menu: From Hot Flashes to Delicious Dishes, A Symptom-Driven Nourishing Guide to Mastering Menopause." Combining practical advice with a visually engaging format, the book is designed to reach a broad audience, including men seeking to support their partners. According to Dr. Baumgaertel, women in their late 30s to early 60s need accurate information on the entire menopausal journey. The Menopause Menu provides helpful, science-based advice, presented with a unique blend of personal narrative and holistic support. The chapters are easy to read and are paired with 16 simple recipes. As we celebrate MLK Day across the U.S., it's a great day for reflection. Today, I've been thinking about our legacy after we're gone. Most of us would be happy if people remembered us for one thing. What that thing is, differs for everyone. But what if your life changes and what you thought you'd be known for also changes? Or what if that one thing becomes two or three? All Dr. King wanted to be was a preacher. And with one meeting, that changed... When Ginny Hughes's oldest daughter, Mallory, was born, she  knew something was terribly wrong. Ginny started talking to doctors, they told her she was having "the mommy worry syndrome."  But Ginny was a nurse and knew to trust her instincts. Eventually Ginny took Mallory to see Dr. Celia Ores, a pediatrician in New York. All Dr. Ores had to do was kiss Mallory and taste her salty skin, and she knew -- Mallory had cystic fibrosis. After a more formal "sweat" test, the diagnosis was confirmed, and Ginny then devoted the rest of her life to caring for Mallory and her sister, getting them the best treatment, teaching other caregivers their care regimens, traveling to New York City every three months for appointments. When Mallory was diagnosed, the life expectancy for cystic fibrosis patients was in the teens or early 20s.  She's now 36. Ginny Hughes  lives in Greenwich, Connecticut and helps Mallory with her own kids. “My health is so good because of her care," Mallory says of her mom. "She taught me how to take care of myself, she got me this far, and now medications are out that make cystic fibrosis a side dish to my life." Doing it All: Dr. Ronak Mehta Discusses Mixing Entrepreneurship and a Medical Career   Dr. Ronak Mehta found life as a practicing family physician and a clinical assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin both rewarding and challenging. Then a few years ago, she decided to pursue another longtime goal: founding a toy company to help educate and inspire people to learn more about their health. The physician and CEO sits down with Women on the Move host Sam Saperstein to discuss how she launched her company, navigating work-life balance, and what she sees in her future   Creating a toy company from scratch Nerdbugs is a line of plush toys in the shape of human organs, which are intended to inform and educate children in science and healthy lifestyles. Ronak founded the company in 2018—but the idea had been germinating in her for about 10 years by then. She was in medical school when the concept first came to her. “One of the things that I noticed was how neat would it be if we had these plush toys that could not only be used to educate people about ‘Hey, you have asthma, this is what your lungs actually look like, and this is how asthma works,’” she says. “And the second thing was, it would be a really neat get well gift for someone that was hospitalized post-surgery or was undergoing dialysis or chemotherapy or something like that.” Early in her medical career, Ronak also published a children’s book about health. While the book didn’t take off, it provided the inspiration for her idea about plush toys. It still took nearly 10 years to get up the nerve to actually pursue launching the toy company. Part of the reason for her resistance, she says, was self-doubt. “I sort of told myself, I have this formal career in health sciences and in medicine and I have no formal education in business, and I have no idea where to start and who am I to try to figure this out?” she says.   Adopting a “Why Not” Mentality Once she finally took the first step of interviewing toy manufacturers to make prototypes of her design, Ronak says, she didn’t look back. When she first launched Nerdbugs, she was doing nearly everything herself. But once she realized the inefficiency in that model, she began hiring freelancers to cover areas like web development, social media, customer service, and photography. And she learned that taking the time to select the right partners as freelancers, and to nurture and support them, helped the company grow. “I wanted to help build these relationships within Nerdbugs, where it wasn't just a short-term person that I was looking for, but someone that really believed in the mission and wanted to grow as we grew,” she says. Along the way, Ronak recalls, she adopted a “Why not?” mentality around Nerdbugs and taking chances on business contests. As she explains: “So I would apply for these things that I felt like maybe I'm not qualified for, but why not me? Why wouldn't they pick me?”   Work-life balance and what’s next As she’s successfully juggled her medical career with her business venture, Ronak says she’s continuing to refine her work-life balance. “When I first started, you know, you have this fire inside you where you're like, okay, I'm just going to make it happen,” she says. “So you wake up at ungodly hours, go to work, come home and work.” Now, she says, she’s setting more boundaries, like not working after 6 p.m., or taking the whole weekend off. As far as the future, Ronak has big plans. She’s in the process of revising her children’s book that originally inspired Nerdbugs. She wants to include more Nerdbugs as characters in the book. And she’s exploring video and creating animated shorts based on the characters.

How and what our bodies experience in fight or flight mode, how we as humans avoid confrontation or conflict, and how we process the energy of 2020. In this episode of the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, John interviews Dr. Norman Uphoff, who was the director of the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development from 1990 to 2005, and is currently Professor Emeritus of Government and International Agriculture at Cornell University. In this episode, Dr. Uphoff relates how he learned about the System of Rice Intensification in 1993 when he was sent to Madagascar as part of an initiative led by Cornell University to develop a program to increase rice yields and help rural development. There Dr. Uphoff learned about the System of Rice Intensification, a method of growing rice that was claimed to increase yields dramatically that had been developed by a French Jesuit priest named Father Henri de Laulanié. Dr. Uphoff was skeptical that the full extent of the reported yields was true but thought the method merited further investigation and developed a plan for the Cornell program to run trials. The System of Rice Intensification focuses on providing plants with oxygen, photosynthesis, and soil biology, involving methods that were not the norm in the growing practices used in rice production, but that consistently increased yields from 50 to 200%. Farmers using this system saw many more tillers, greater root growth, and plants that stayed green longer. The plants intercepted more sun, gave higher yields, and were more resistant to pests and diseases. They didn’t bend over in storms as easily and could withstand water stress and drought conditions. Dr. Uphoff describes how he trialed the method, demonstrating it on the ground in Madagascar and then expanding it to other countries. Dr. Uphoff describes the practices used in the SRI method for growing rice and then shows how those same methods, renamed to System of Crop Intensification (SCI), can work for other crops. One key characteristic of SRI and SCI is the use of compost instead of commercial fertilizers. Dr. Uphoff describes the situations in which compost shows the same efficacy as commercial fertilizer. This episode is a gem from one of the pioneers who achieved wide promotion of regenerative growing practices in an era when those practices were much less popular than they are today. Resources: Photo mentioned in the episode: (Note from Dr. Uphoff: "The two rice plants in Cuba are the same variety (VN 2081) and the same age (52 days after seeding in nursery). SRI plant on right was transplanted from the nursery at 13 days into SRI growing conditions, while the plant on left was removed from nursery at 52 days for transplanting at usual time in Cuba. 43 tillers vs. 5 tillers; as important are the differences in size and color(!) between the two plants. The size of the SRI roots says to me that the soil into which Luis Romero planted this seedling was really well-endowed with beneficial microorganisms that stimulated this root growth.")
