As women age and close in on menopause, they start to feel off, so they go to the doctor (like we've been taught to do). What does the doctor tell us? “That's totally normal for your age.” News flash - it isn't! This week's guest is Esther Blum - integrative dietician, author, mom, and lover of exercise (that can be done in 20 minutes or less). Meet Esther Blum Esther Blum is an Integrative Dietitian and Menopause Expert. In the past 27 years, she has helped thousands of women master menopause through nutrition, hormones, and self-advocacy. Esther is the bestselling author of See ya later, Ovulator, Cavewomen Don't Get Fat, Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous, Secrets of Gorgeous, and The Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous Project. Known as Gwyneth Paltrow's menopause mentor and by Forbes for helping women thrive through menopause, Esther was also voted Best Nutritionist by Manhattan Magazine. She has appeared on the Today Show, ABC-TV, and Good Day NY and is frequently quoted in goop, Well + Good, Forbes, Time Magazine, The New York Post, The Los Angeles Times, In Style, Bazaar, Self, Fitness, Marie Claire, and Cosmo. What Is Menopause? Ah, the ‘big pause'...as some might call it. As a female moving into the next phase of perimenopause, I've been rather disappointed with the lack of information shared during routine ob-gyn visits and decided to do some in-depth research. This brought me to Esther's healing work with thousands of women in and out of menopause. So, we dove all into menopause — what it is, ways to treat it, and feel better than ever. Put on your seatbelt, my friend, there's a lot of ground to cover, and as always, take what you like and leave the rest. Menopause is a hormone deficiency that happens naturally for women as they start making fewer reproductive hormones. Both menstruation and fertility declines typically with women in their early to late 40s. What Are Menopause Symptoms? Symptoms can, of course, vary from woman to woman. The good news is that 80% of the solution for menopausal symptoms can be changed and altered with lifestyle. Here's a listing of typical symptoms many women face: periods can worsen, meno-rage (what Esther refers to as excess anger and rage), insomnia and sleep issues, anxiety, depression, irregular heartbeat, breast tenderness, brain fog, vaginal dryness, lowered libido and lighter or missed periods. If you're feeling something is off, Esther urges you to trust yourself. You know your body and honor your own inner intuition! How To Embrace and Overcome Menopause One of the biggest factors in managing and even overcoming menopausal symptoms is due to lifestyle habits like the foods you're eating, the exercise you're doing, and the sleep you're getting. Esther's book goes into much greater detail; however, I'm going to break this down into those three categories to help give you an overview and more clarity. Nutrition You're going to need way more protein than ever before. Esther recommends 150 grams of protein each day. A good place to start is with 30 grams of protein at each meal (which is about 4 - 6 oz/meal). You want to keep your blood sugar stable, which protein and a small amount of carbohydrates can do. Contrary to what you might have thought, eating carbs at dinner is a good idea (for example, 1 - 1 ½ cups of rice or quinoa), which will help bump up your insulin and tamper your cortisol. Exercise Contrary to the exercise many of us do in our 20s and 30s, you'll want to switch up your exercise routine to help support your adrenals. This means less ‘HIIT' (high-intensity interval training) method training and more walks. Walking outside can help reset your circadian rhythm and give you a great dose of vitamin D. Using weights, with enough rest in between sets, will also help with bone density loss. Sleep It takes 8 weeks to reshape your nervous system. Engaging in deep breathing, meditation, or yoga nidra before bed is an excellent way to rewire your fight or flight system. This takes time, so don't give up if you don't notice results right away with your sleep. What Are The Options? Esther shares research in greater depth in her book; however, we did discuss healthy options to help with symptoms and support your body during these hormonal changes. All of these suggestions are FDA-approved and considered bio-identical hormones, which are most like your own hormones. A great way to test your hormone levels, in addition to a hormone blood test, is to take what's called the DUTCH (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) test. Esther and other functional medical professionals can guide you so you're not going through perimenopause and menopause alone. You can get a list of Esther's ‘Happy Hormone Cocktail List' that she mentioned here: https://estherblum.com/cocktail/ref/5 Menopause Redefined In Asian cultures, it's also known as ‘The Second Spring.' I love this definition because of the focus on a second chance to bloom into your most true self. Perhaps this is the time in your life when you lose your filter, own your voice, and end an era of ‘people pleasing'. You've not tethered to rules around your cycle anymore, and perhaps it's a time to embrace taking exquisite care of yourself. Some empowering questions to ask yourself might be: ‘What do I really want?', ‘Who do I want to surround myself with?' and ‘How do I want to feel?'. This is a time to cut out all the B.S. and honor your ‘You-est You'! Looking To Help Others Know Who They Are and Design Their Best Life? In today's episode we talk with Ariel Johnston, Registered Dietitian, who is nearing completion of requirements for the CEDS credential (Certified Eating Disorders Specialist). Ariel shares her learning path with us from undergrad to now, and highlights how choosing the right supervisor is important, knowing what our blind spots are, and how to be humble. We talk about teachers, treatment programs, insurance woes, PCOS, HAES and a lot about our supervision and our past and present supervisors. Listen in to hear how Ariel navigates a common topic, how to help the client with their relationship to food, and what to do when your patient is 'doing everything the doctor says' (including starving themselves) but still isn't 'cured'. Bio: Ariel Johnston is a registered dietitian, cooking instructor, and owner of her own private practice in Kansas City, The Tasty Balance. She was voted to be Winner of Best Nutritionist in The Pitch's Best of Kansas City 2020. Ariel's own experience as a collegiate athlete lead her to a career in nutrition. She completed her undergraduate at the Kansas State University and an internship through Iowa State University. She went on to focus in eating disorders and has worked at EDCare in Kansas City and the outpatient level. Her vision is to create a space both in practice and blog that provides a safe space for clients to learn how to trust themselves around food; to see it as a gift, not a necessary evil and to learn how to love and appreciate their bodies and themselves. In 2020 Ariel expanded her practice to include other dietitians practicing from a Health at Every Size lens. In her spare time, you'll likely find her on the trails around Kansas City with her dog or biking and enjoying time outside. With your host Beth Harrell Follow Beth on Instagram

In her book Feed Your Soul, Carly Pollack combines practical guidance on what to eat with timeless wisdom. Being a conscious leader requires focus, clarity, and energy. In this episode, Carly Pollack and Free Your Inner Guru host Laura Tucker explore why many people experience wellness as a battle between two voices - our compassionate Higher Self and our obsessive, punishing lower self - and why our relationship with food is a mirror for where we are on our spiritual path. Carly Pollack is the founder of Nutritional Wisdom, a thriving private practice based in Austin, Texas. A Certified Clinical Nutritionist with a master’s degree in holistic nutrition, Carly has been awarded Best Nutritionist in Austin five years running and has helped over 10,000 people achieve their health and happiness goals. “Instead of someone outside of you - or a book or a person…Feed Your Soul is really a book about teaching you how to find your own boundaries. It’s not ‘Hey, I’ve never met you in my whole life, but I’m going to write a book telling you how I think you need to eat.’ It’s different for everyone, and different at different seasons of their life.” - Carly Pollack Conversation highlights -Carly shares her experience of being at war with her body, a constant chaotic battle with 2 sides. -The role of awareness in guiding your health. Why focussing on the food and the movement is ineffective. -When you feel like your emotional wellness is easily being tripped up by external triggers, you need to look at your spiritual practice and strengthen it. -The difference between judgment and holding yourself to a high standard -Where Carly stands on the two opposing camps in woman’s wellness -Simple but impactful guidance on what to eat: foods that rot. -Why the white potato is a victim of dogma. -How to apply the 80/20 rule to nutrition. -What it was like to approach publishers with a book that contains no hook or quick fix. Carly Pollack’s Memorable Quotes “Obsessiveness and awareness cannot coexist.” “I can’t influence myself if I’m judging myself.” “I don’t want to take the life out of food, I want to take the power out of food.” “To demonize the banana, we are missing the point. We are doing this a lot to distract ourselves from the bigger picture of doing the deeper work.” Mentioned in this episode Carly Pollack's book - Feed Your Soul -Nutritional Wisdom to Lose Weight Permanently and Live Fulfilled Website - carlypollack.com Support the #FYIGPodcast and join the Free Your Inner Guru listener forum at support.freeyourinnerguru.com

A Hunger To Change The Conversation About Health Growing up, Carly Pollack struggled with a buffet of issues: anxiety, autoimmune disorder, a never-ending battle with her weight. As Pollack puts it, “I was the queen of impeccable weekday eating and the impressive weekend binge.” So, it’s only natural then, that she’d go on to earn a Master’s Degree in Holistic Nutrition and be voted ‘Best Nutritionist’ in Austin for four years running. Right? Well, that’s not exactly the most obvious line of logic but Carly believes, “we often teach what we need to learn most.” That mantra bleeds through to every corner of her work. Pollack caries an impressive resume, having lectured all over the country for incredible companies like: Facebook, Whole Foods, Lulu Lemon and the Livestrong Foundation. And yet, she’s equally at home giving a small talk at the Sustainable Food Center or mentoring an aspiring entrepreneur at the Young Women’s Alliance. Her No-BS approach to creating lasting change is both uncommon and refreshing. You are in for a real treat with this interview. In this episode of Voices of Impact, Carly and I discuss the importance of asking high-quality questions. We talk about celebrating ‘small wins,’ as a means to combat ‘next-level syndrome.’ We tackle the subjects of behavior modification, emotional eating and spirituality. And Carly shares why traditional diets have such a high failure rate and what she and her team are doing to coach their clients back to health and happiness.
I'm excited to introduce today's featured guest, Katherine Tallmadge. Katherine is a licensed and registered dietician. She founded Personalized Nutrition in 1984, which designs nutrition, weight loss and wellness programs for individuals, corporations, and restaurants. She's also the author of Diet Simple and an award-winning journalist, regularly contributing to The Washington Post, US News and World Report, Politico, and others. You may have also seen her on TV as she's been featured on CNN, many of the major network news programs, PBS, and The Daily Show. Given Katherine's unique professional qualifications — she has a B.S in Dietetics and Nutrition, an M.A. degree in Behavioral Sciences, and a second M.A. degree in Journalism and Public Affairs — it's not surprising that The Washington Post and Harper's Bazaar have named her the "Best Nutritionist". Her appearance on the show today couldn't be more timely. The holidays are here and in addition to friends, family, and fun, it can also mean more stress and more food. Katherine is going to share some tips to help us maintain our sanity and ensure that we still fit into our jeans at the end of the year.
Carly Pollack is the founder of Nutritional Wisdom, a thriving private practice based in Austin, Texas. She is a certified Clinical Nutritionist specializing in holistic nutrition and wellness. Carly has been awarded Best Nutritionist in Austin three years running and has helped over 10,000 people achieve their health and happiness goals. Growing up, Carly struggled with anxiety, autoimmune issues and an ongoing battle with her weight. Through trial and error (mostly error), Carly was able to figure out why so many of us fail to achieve the health we so badly desire. Through years of study and self-healing, she found the key to creating permanent change. Carly beautifully marries the science of the body to the wisdom of our intuition. Raised as a quick-witted New Yorker, she was raised without the ability to sugarcoat the truth. You won’t find any nonsense here--just clear and honest information—and some tough love if you need it. Her teachings empower you to shift your thought patterning, change your physical body, eliminate stress and live your best life.
