This July, Ryan and David are diving into the premiere of Ironheart—critics gave it a 77%, audiences gave it a 47%, but what did we think? Then we go cosmic with a deep dive into Fantastic Four: First Steps! We explore the film's comic book roots, the all-star cast (hello Pedro Pascal, Julia Garner, and Galactus!), and how this new take sets the stage for the MCU's future. We also break down Kevin Feige's flurry of interviews pre-SDCC no-show, including big shake-ups for Disney+, news on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, updates on Blade, X-Men, and Black Panther 3, and some major behind-the-scenes shifts—like Marvel stepping away from Kang before Quantumania even hit theaters. Finally, we preview the upcoming animated series Iron Man and His Awesome Friends (yes, that theme song is by Mark Hoppus). The Appalachian Mountains, long veiled in mystery and folklore, have once again delivered a chilling bounty of unexplained encounters. From the deep hollers of Kentucky to the misty ridges of North Georgia and the wilds of Western North Carolina, these recent and historical eyewitness reports stitch together a patchwork of terror, primal awe, and ancient whispers. Locals and long-time residents—many of whom are deeply rooted in the region for generations—are speaking out about what they've seen, felt, and feared.Among the reports are chilling descriptions of upright, wolf-like beings, pale gray humanoids with unnatural cadence and behavior, and massive white-furred creatures resembling a cryptid Sasquatch. In multiple accounts, glowing yellow eyes pierce the darkness, and the sounds of babies crying—or guttural human-like screams—lure the unsuspecting into dangerous territory. These aren't just isolated tales. Multiple witnesses, sometimes years apart, describe nearly identical experiences, suggesting a persistent, possibly interdimensional presence. One story centers around a family picnic interrupted by a bipedal white-furred creature seen hurling tree limbs in frustration. Another follows a retired teacher who repeatedly encountered a massive black panther accompanied by a kitten—creatures denied by wildlife officials but steeped in Native lore. Other reports involve vanishing cattle, strange power-draining zones, and areas so heavy with dread that seasoned hunters and outdoorsmen refuse to return. These aren't the tales of thrill-seeking adventurers or out-of-towners spooked by backcountry sounds. These are the confessions of rural families, local government officials, hunters, and children who have grown up side by side with the forest. And many of them now believe they've glimpsed a side of Appalachia that's not only ancient, but otherworldly.

Erlesene Auswahl; geht besser: Die New York Times hat die 100 BESTEN FILME DES 21. JAHRHUNDERTS ermitteln lassen. We asked you if a burrito was a sandwich, and you said 'no'. We asked you if ravioli was a sandwich and you said 'heck no'. We asked you if an ice cream sandwich was a sandwich and things...started to get a little murky. This isn't just a sandwich problem: you can also have similar arguments about what counts as a cup, a bird, a fish, furniture, art, and more! So wait...does any word mean anything anymore? Have we just broken language?? It's okay, linguistics has a solution! In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about why deciding what's in and what's out of the definition of a word is so dang tricky, why people love to argue about it, and how prototype theory solves all the "is X a Y" arguments once and for all. Note that this episode originally aired as Bonus 9: Is X a sandwich? Solving the word-meaning argument once and for all. We've added an updated announcements section to the top and a few new things about prototypes and meaning to the end. The production design of the film Fantastic Four: First Steps is an homage to the early ‘60s comics created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. While Kirby is best known for his bold, fist-popping drawing style, he was also a great storyteller who redefined what comic books could be. He was appreciated by hardcore fans at the time, but he never got the same media attention as Stan Lee and wasn't compensated for the fortunes his characters made. I talk with Kirby experts Charles Hatfield, Mark Evanier, Randolph Hoppe, and Arlen Schumer about where we can see Jack Kirby's influence on comics like The Fantastic Four, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America and Black Panther. And I explore Kirby's childhood at the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side, where every day was “clobberin' time,”and he first learned how to use a garbage can lid as a shield. When a major Hollywood studio released Five Fingers of Death to thrill-seeking Times Square moviegoers on March 21, 1973, only a handful of Black and Asian American audience members knew the difference between an Iron Fist and an Eagle's Claw. That changed overnight as kung fu movies kicked off a craze that would earn millions at the box office, send TV ratings soaring, sell hundreds of thousands of video tapes, influence the birth of hip hop, reshape the style of action we see in movies today, and introduce America to some of the biggest non-white stars to ever hit motion picture screens. This lavishly illustrated book tells the bone-blasting, spine-shattering story of how these films of fury ― spawned in anti-colonial protests on the streets of Hong Kong ― came to America and raised hell for 15 years before greed, infomercials, and racist fearmongering shut them down. You'll meet Japanese judo coaches battling American wrestlers in backwoods MMA bouts at county fairs, black teenagers with razor sharp kung fu skills heading to Hong Kong to star in movies shot super fast so they can make it back to the States in time to start 10th grade, and Puerto Rican karate coaches making their way in this world with nothing but their own two fists. It's about an 11-year-old boy who not only created the first fan edit but somehow turned it into a worldwide moneymaker, CIA agents secretly funding a karate movie, the New York Times fabricating a fear campaign about black "karate gangs" out to kill white people, the history of black martial arts in America ("Why does judo or karate suddenly get so ominous because black men study it?," wondered Malcolm X), the death of Bruce Lee and the onslaught of imitators that followed, and how a fight that started in Japanese internment camps during World War II ended in a ninja movie some 40 years later. It's a battle for recognition and respect that started a long, long time ago and continues today in movies like The Matrix, Kill Bill, and Black Panther and here, for the first time, is the full uncensored story.2025's revised and expanded hardcover edition features new material on superstars like Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, and Donnie Yen, plus spotlights on unsung performers, movie poster artists, low-rent film distributors, 1980s video companies, and more!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Son of director and producer Bob Rafelson & production designer Toby Carr, Peter spent this episode really digging deep and getting into some intense as well as humorous stuff about growing up the son of an easy rider. Or is that a member of The Monkees? No matter. We get into it all and then some on this episode. Fans of the sixties and seventies counterculture will know the work of Bob Rafelson for his associations with very specific touchstones of American film and television thar forever changed the course of the entertainment industry. From The Monkees to Easy Rider, from Five Easy Pieces to The Last Picture Show, Bob Rafelson along with partners Bert Schneider & Steve Blauner ushered in a new wave of independent film in Hollywood that smashed convention as well as the studio system. Along with writer, star and co-hort Jack Nicholson, Bob Rafelson directed films like The King of Marvin Gardens, Stay Hungry, The Postman Always Rings Twice and many more. Bob Rafelson was in the epicenter of films that brought an independent streak to a staid industry and never looked back. Our conversation with Peter centered around the growing up too fast where he learned about drugs, revolution and the FBI is one for the ages. Along the way we talk about Madonna, Abbie Hoffman, The Black Panthers, Dennis Hopper, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sally Field, how he ended up with the Monkees instruments in his bedroom and the death of his sister under troubling circumstances. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you part one of the latest episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast with guest, Peter Rafelson. Take a listen.

On today's episode I talk with geographer, artist, photographer, and activist Linda Quiquivix about her new book: Palestine 1492: A Report Back. Combining her work learning and working alongside the Zapatistas and Palestinians, and incorporating anti-fascist politics from the Black Panthers, Quiquivix reaches back to the 15th century to see the beginnings of the Western project to carve the surface of the planet into spaces to be both shared and wrestled over by those Above.  Instead, Linda asks us to walk side by side with those Below. She writes, “what might it look like what might it feel like, to walk with the Below? To place yourself under fire with the Below, so that the need to shake off fascism becomes a shared necessity for you, too?  I do not know, but I hope we will find out together because there's no blueprint. From the Zapatistas I learn to ask questions as we walk.  From Aida Camp I learn sometimes we must ask questions as we jump. May we learn the answers together.”Dr. Linda Quiquivix is a geographer, illustrator, and popular educator of Maya-Mam roots, raised by Palestinians, Zapatistas, Panthers, and jaguars. Her work centers on decolonial land struggles that  challenge us to share the world with all our difference, a world “where all worlds fit.” She is author of Palestine 1492: A Report Back (Wild Ox Books, 2024), a visual and literary exploration that weaves Palestine into global struggles across 500 years. Quiquivix is also a co-editor of “The Fourth World War: Zapatista Writings on Global Capital 1997-2023” (Paliacate Press, 2024). Learn more about her work at quiqui.org

It's just Kevin and Lauren this week and they manage to keep it pretty tight with some Squid Game talk, Call me Izzy, Smoke, Baby Girl, and Ironheart. They open the show by discussing the first half of the new season, as Lauren has watched 4 of the episodes and Kevin has only watched 3. The review is definitely favorable and the two make their predictions about the finale, both with differing ides about where it could end up! Next up, Lauren takes us to Broadway with Call Me Izzy. It's a one owman show starring the always incredible Jean Smart. It tackles the tough topic of abuse and is delivered wonderfully in a way that only Jean Smart can do. If you're in the New York area and aren't looking for the most uplifting story, this one is worth catching. Kevin takes us back to the small screen with Smoke, the new series on Apple TV+. It follows 2 arson investigators, played by Taron Eggerton and Jurnee Smollett. They are tracking 2 separate arsonists while dealing with their own issues on the home front. Only the tow episodes have aired so far but it seems to be an excellent investigative series and has a great twist at the end of the second episode.  Continuing the recent trend of "we watched it so you don't have to," Lauren watched Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman. It's the tale of a highly successful business woman seduced by a younger man and the messiness that ensues. All in all, it doesn't do much to reinvent the wheel and leaves a lot to be desired, even in the genre of steamy romance. Kevin closes out the show with a review of the first 3 episodes of Ironheart on Disney+. The story of Riri Williams is carried over after Black Panther 2 and is surprisingly very solid so far. This is a character that Kevin did not enjoy in her previous appearance, but he's been impressed with the work done in this outing and he's enjoying it so far, even going as far as calling it one of the better Marvel shows.  As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture

This week we’re joined by Mary Frances Phillips, a scholar-activist, public intellectual, and Associate Professor of African American Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her interdisciplinary research agenda focuses on race and gender in post-1945 social movements and the carceral state. Her scholarly interests include the Modern Black Freedom Struggle, Black Feminism, and Black Power Studies. Her first book Black Panther Woman chronicles the life and spiritual practices of Ericka Huggins, a founding member of the Black Panther Party and the first woman to hold a leadership role within the movement. Unpacking her unlawful arrest, latent queerness, and journey from resistance warrior to revolutionary; Dr. Phillips helps close the gap on how some of the movement philosophy of the past has made its way into the current day.
