It was a very busy day at Halas Hall. The Bears honored both Rome Odunze and T.J. Edwards the winners of this years Brian Piccolo award. Both Edwards and Odunze talked with the media. Ryan Poles and Assistant GM Ian Cunningham also spoke with the media ahead of the draft. Cunningham was very honest about his job search. Poles believes Thursday could be “wild.” Adam Hoge and Mark Carman were at Halas Hall. They are two wild and crazy guys who host the CHGO Bears Podcast.
Send us a Text Message. How in the world do we explain this episode? Today we have a conversation with my friend Brian Piccolo, who sounds like Bruce Springsteen and has spent his life "living like a boss" (forgive the Dad joke, but it had to be done). From high school wrestling beginner to college wrestling punch bag to finally All American overcomer and Olympic hopeful. And when that was done, on to Judo on a whim...and one questionable call away from the Olympics. The best way to describe this conversation is just to drop in some of the juicy one liners that peppered this pod and kept us coming back for more...and more...and more. And now, in no particular order, some nuggets for you...Judo, it's like wrestling in pajamas. You know, all the illegal stuff from wrestling? You can do it in judo! Are you on the path? Look how far you've come. When you get through this, you'll be better on the other side. And last, but not least...Would the “you” of today SMASH the “you” of 6 months ago?Prime Health Associates
In the episode titled "Love" from the "Extreme Makeover - Relationships Edition" series, Pastor Terry shares a powerful story from over 50 years ago about the relationship between two football players, Gayle Sayers and Brian Piccolo. Despite racial challenges in the 1967 sports world, the two formed a close friendship, and even a movie, "Brian's Song," was made about their bond. Brian's life was tragically cut short by cancer, leaving Gayle devastated. Pastor Terry highlights two key principles for great relationships: love and forgiveness. Drawing inspiration from Jesus' example, he references the moment before the Passover when Jesus expressed love for his disciples by washing their feet. Jesus then commands his followers to love one another as he has loved them. The message emphasizes the transformative power of actions over opinions and encourages the practice of expressing love, particularly within life groups. Pastor Terry stresses the importance of being willing to pay the price for love, drawing parallels to a story about the founder of World Vision. The conclusion brings a hopeful vision of a diverse and united crowd standing before the throne in Revelation 7:9-12, proclaiming salvation from God and the Lamb. The episode underscores the significance of learning from Jesus' example, expressing love, and being willing to sacrifice for the sake of building meaningful relationships.

Who's going to bookend the offensive line at the tackle positions? And why haven't the Bears locked up linebacker Roquan Smith on a long-term contract? To help answer those questions, Arkush welcomed on longtime Sun-Times reporter Mark Potash. Arkush ended the hour by reflecting on the Bears honoring the late, great Brian Piccolo at practice Thursday.

Brian's Song is a 1971 ABC Movie of the Week that recounts the details of the life of Brian Piccolo (played by James Caan), a Chicago Bears football player stricken with terminal cancer after turning pro in 1965, told through his friendship with Bears teammate Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams). Piccolo's and Sayers' sharply differing temperaments and racial backgrounds made them unlikely to become as close friends as they did, including becoming the first interracial roommates in the history of the National Football League, and the film chronicles the evolution of their friendship, ending with Piccolo's death in 1970.[2] The production was such a success on ABC that it was later shown in theaters by Columbia Pictures,[3] with a major premiere in Chicago; however, it was soon withdrawn for lack of business.[1] Critics have called the movie one of the finest telefilms ever made.[1][4] A 2005 readers poll taken by Entertainment Weekly ranked Brian's Song seventh in its list of the top "guy-cry" films ever made. The movie is based on Sayers's account of his friendship with Piccolo and coping with Piccolo's illness in Sayers's 1970 autobiography, I Am Third.[5] The film was written by veteran screenwriter William Blinn,[6] whose script one Dallas television critic called "highly restrained, steering clear of any overt sentimentality [yet conveying] the genuine affection the two men felt so deeply for each other."[4] Although based on a true story, the film does include some fictional scenes. For example, the head coach, George Halas (played by Jack Warden), tells Sayers that he wants to bench Piccolo when he suspects that there may be a problem affecting his performance. He later learns of Brian's cancer. In reality, Jim Dooley was the head coach at that time, as Halas had retired from the position following the 1967 season.
Shelley Fabares began her career tap dancing and modeling from the age three years old. She appeared on such TV shows as Captain Midnight (1954) and Annie Oakley (1954) and at the age 12, she made her professional film debut in the Rock Hudson/Cornell Borchers tearjerker Never Say Goodbye (1956) as Hudson's daughter, and went on to play kid sister roles in the rock 'n' roll-themed Rock, Pretty Baby! (1956) and its sequel Summer Love (1957) both starring John Saxon. Early TV appearances included the Producers' Showcase adaptation of Our Town starring Frank Sinatra and Paul Newman. She was Young Cathy in a Matinee Theatre adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Teen-idol status came with her coming-of-age role as the ever-wholesome daughter "Mary Stone" on The Donna Reed Show (1958). She had a #1 Billboard hit with the song "Johnny Angel." After which, she co-starred with Elvis Presley in the movies Girl Happy (1965), Spinout (1966) and Clambake (1967). Shelley is Golden Globe nominated for her role as the altruistic wife of a dying footballer "Brian Piccolo" in Brian's Song (1971), where she starred opposite James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. She co-starred in the series The Brian Keith Show (1972), The Practice (1976), Highcliffe Manor (1979), the late-night soap spoof Forever Fernwood (1977) and marvelously played the villian opposite Bonnie Franklin in the hit sitcom One Day at a Time (1975). On television, she will forever be associated with her character Christine Armstrong, Craig T. Nelson's resourceful mate on hit series Coach (1989), where she earned two Emmy nominations. Shelley is married to actor Mike Farrell of M*A*S*H (1972). Together, they supplied the voices for Ma and Pa Kent on the Superman: The Animated Series (1996). Shelley and Mike joined us on the podcast to talk about their love story, working with Elvis Presley and Donna Reed, starring on the hit show Coach, her hit song Johnny Angel and so much more.

As Christ-followers we are to follow Christ! The Apostle Paul understood this when he wrote, “Follow my example as I follow Christ” (1 Cor 11:1). In our text today we see a characteristic of Jesus we should follow; the compassionate healing of the deaf and mute man. Do you lean more toward compassion or indifference? A simple way to discern this is with your answers to these 3 questions: 1. Did you cry when Bambi’s mom died? 2. Did you cry when Brian Piccolo died? 3. Do you cry during Hallmark shows?

"Brian's Song," the 1971 made-for-TV movie that tells the true story of football legend Gayle Sayers and his teammate Brian Piccolo, is considered one of the top "Guy Cry" films of all time. But just what is it about this story of football, friendship, life and death that touches the hearts of even the manliest men? The Chicago Bears made news in the 1960s when they had Sayers, a black man, and Piccolo, a white man, room together on road trips. Fifty years later, what can we learn from this film's depiction of racial tension in America at that time? What if you're not a guy or a football fan? Can you still enjoy this movie and get something out of it? We think so.

How Gayle Sayers gave me GOY (pronounced JOY) “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”― C.S. Lewis My question for you is, "How would you have handled it?" if you had been Brian Piccolo or Gayle Sayers?

After an extended break, Broomstackers is back! Chelsea is back on the show after overwhelming demand from our listeners. Of course, this meant that we spent a lot of our time making bad CSI-related puns and discussing who would make the Gryffindor curling team. We also talked about what curling-related things we were thankful for, why Chelsea finds the name "Schenectady" just a little bit hilarious, and a whole lot of topics that have little-to-nothing to do with curling. It's a good time all around! As a heads up, the next episode will be released in about two weeks, after Ed and his team return from GNCC Club Playdowns in Schenectady (where we'll probably be recording plenty of podcast material). Wish us luck! SHOW NOTES Brian's Song was a 1971 TV movie that told the story of Brian Piccolo (played by James Cann in the film), a football player who was diagnosed with terminal cancer after joining the Chicago Bears. After a last minute comeback by the Stampeders, the Ottawa Redblacks managed to defeat Calagary 39-33 in overtime in the Grey Cup, capping a huge upset victory. Never seen a haka? This is a haka! Of course, it predates sports: it is a traditional war cry of the Maori. Yes, the New Zealand national basketball team really is known as the Tall Blacks. On the other hand, while it is widely believed that the All Blacks name started with a typo, it seems as though there's no way to confirm whether this is how the name gained popularity.
