Shoot us a Text.We are rounding down a week of east coast travel here on the last day of the NAMAD Annual Membership Meeting. Today we are looking at Ford's recently announced change in their EV plans and how EVs may not be slowing down as much as some sources may say.Show Notes with links:Ford is adjusting its electrification plans, canceling its long-planned three-row electric crossovers and delaying the next-generation full-size electric pickup by 18 months. The automaker will now focus on a family of hybrid three-row crossovers.Ford's changes could result in up to $1.9 billion in costs, including a $400 million noncash charge related to the cancellation of the crossover.CFO John Lawler: "We looked where the segment was evolving, the amount of competition, the customer needs, and then, the size of the battery that needs to go in a pure EV, the cost structure, the pricing, We could not put together a vehicle that met our requirements to be profitable in the first 12 months of launch."The next-gen full-size electric pickup's launch has been pushed to late 2027.Moving forward, Lawler said EVs would represent roughly 30 percent of Ford's capital expenditure, down from a planned 40 percent.Despite talks of an EV slowdown, the U.S. market saw record-breaking sales in Q2 2024, with 18 electric models surpassing 5,000 units sold. Tesla, Ford, and Hyundai lead, but newcomers are gaining ground.EV sales hit a record 320,463 units in Q2, up 11% from last year and 23% from Q1.The 18 models that sold 5K units: Tesla Model Y, Model 3, Model X and Cybertruck; Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning; Hyundai IONIQ 5; Toyota bZ4X; Rivian R1S; Cadillac Lyriq; BMW i4; Kia EV6, EV9, and Niro; Chevrolet Blazer EV; Volkswagen ID.4; Mercedes EQE; and Nissan Ariya. As we previously reported, Tesla's market share dipped below 50% for the first time, now at 49.7%, and Hyundai Motor Group (including Kia and Genesis) claimed 10% of the U.S. EV market, outperforming Ford (7.4%) and GM (6.3%)Stephanie Valdez Streaty, Cox Automotive Industry Insights Director said: “Automakers that deliver the right product at the right price and offer an excellent consumer experience will lead the way in EV adoption.”Chick-Fil-A is stepping into the entertainment arena with plans to launch its own streaming service, focusing on family-friendly content. The fast-food giant is partnering with top production companies to create original shows, marking a bold move into the media landscape.Chick-Fil-A is developing original content for a new streaming platform. The focus will be on family-friendly shows, particularly in the unscripted genre.Collaborations include production companies behind popular series like NBC's The Wall and Netflix's 13 Reasons Why.A 10-episode family-friendly game show has already been greenlit.Budgets for these projects are reported Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Just another EV Monday! The weekend was a bit light for automotive news, but GM is bringing back the Blazer EV, Rivian handed out Steve Jobs style surprises, and Marques Brownlee threw shade on the Ocean.General Motors reignites the electric vehicle (EV) market by resuming Chevrolet Blazer EV sales at reduced prices, addressing past software glitches with significant updates and improvements.GM halted Chevrolet Blazer EV sales in December due to infotainment and fast charging issues, but now confidently resumes with software enhancements and a price cut.The updates include new features like customizable ambient lighting and a battery percentage display, with existing owners needing dealership visits for software upgrades.Despite not pinpointing a singular fault, GM emphasizes improved quality testing and software processes to avoid future issues.Price reductions across various Blazer EV trims aim to boost sales, alongside eligibility for a $7,500 federal tax credit.EV startup Fisker faces backlash after a failed attempt to mitigate criticism from tech reviewer Marques Brownlee, exposing deeper financial woes.Marques Brownlee's scathing review of Fisker's Ocean SUV has gone viral, amassing over 4.3 million views for highlighting numerous design and software issues.Brownlee originally asked Fisker for a vehicle, but they kept delaying, resulting in the Youtuber borrowing a vehicle from J&S Mitsubishi. The EV maker asked Brownlee to wait until the car could receive the 2.0 software update, but he declined."It's not really in my policy to wait on promised future software updates,'" Brownlee said in the YouTube video. "I'm going to review the car that's out now, that real buyers are actually living with." The title of the video is “This is the Worst Car I've Ever Reviewed.”A supposed senior Fisker engineer's call to the dealership loaning Brownlee the car backfired, with a recording by the dealership revealing software problems persist post-update, attracting 3.6+ million views on TikTok.Amidst the PR disaster, Fisker announces financial instability, casting doubt on the company's future viability.Channeling their inner Steve Jobs, Rivian had “one more thing” during its R2 reveal event. The EV maker introduced the R3 and R3X, a sportier and slightly shorter electric SUV than the R2, catching the audience by surprise. Rivian's approach to the R3 showcases a strategic expansion of its electric vehicle lineup, emphasizing design, performance, and affordability. The R3 aims to offer a more compact package than the R2, targeting a lower price point than the $45K R2, though specifics were not immediately disclosed. With a sleek design featuring sloping rear ends, the R3 and R3X promise over 300 miles of range and rapid acceleration, positioning them as direct competitors to Korean EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
Tom and guest host Paul Herrold of the Sons of Speed covered a number of topics this week. First, the hosts addressed the surprise Rivian reveal of not one, but two, small crossovers last week, both of which are scheduled to be built at the maker's existing Illinois facility. Both will be much more affordable than Rivian's current offerings. Also, the Chevrolet Blazer EV is back in production, this after a stop-sale was ordered by the brand as a result of software issues. Listen for details regarding the Blazer's return to production, and significant price cuts. Still in the first segment, Paul shared the scoop on a pair of excellent Sons of Speed-produced “The Lap” videos, one featuring a collectible Dodge Challenger, the other a rather rare—and high-performance—Mercedes-AMG product. In the second segment, the hosts welcome Randy Dale of Nissan to the program. Randy walked Tom and Paul through the updates to the 2024 Nissan Sentra, which Tom feels has become a far better vehicle—and a great value. In the last segment Paul is subjected to Tom's “Who Made More” quiz, which Tom expected Paul to fail. Did he? The hosts wrapped up the show covering a number of subjects, including the impressive interiors of Hyundai and Genesis cars and crossovers.

The 2024 Blazer EV is the first Chevrolet vehicle on General Motors' new Ultium electric platform, which is shared by the Honda Prologue EV and Cadillac Lyriq. We offer our first impressions of the new Blazer, including its driving dynamics, build quality, and why GM ordered dealers to stop selling it. This week, the Unnamed Automotive Podcast welcomes guest Chad Kirchner from EVPulse, which means a great and fun discussion of electric vehicles. Our guest arrives following his test drive of the highly anticipated 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV. Available with three different drive configurations (front-, rear, or all-wheel-drive) but no Android Auto or Apple CarPlay support, the Blazer has a lot of questions to answer, and Chad has the answers ready. Then Benjamin reviews the 2024 Buick Envista, a budget friendly, premium crossover that has surprised many critics. Is he among the converts? What makes this small car draw so many headlines, and will it help reverse the brand image associated with Buick? Benjamin has a lot to say on the matter! Then the guys discuss Chad's recent Great Lakes Challenge, before going off on a tangent about junk food. Be sure to hear the whole discussion and then send us your feedback at our website or socials. Thanks for listening!
The Tesla Cybertruck is here! In Podcast 314, Jessica Ray subs in as host and leads the MotorWeek crew in some lively discussion about Tesla's first foray into the pickup truck world. Honda has just pulled the wraps off its first dedicated battery-electric crossover SUV, and we'll have all the details about it. Our special guest this week is Jonathan Rivers, who is manager of product information at American Honda. Host Jack Nerad had the chance to sit with him for a behind-the-scenes briefing at a secret location in Southern California. Honda is basing its first all-electric SUV on a General Motors platform the Prologue shares with the upcoming Chevrolet Blazer EV. But the Prologue presents itself as a Honda through and through. A long look at a pre-production version of the crossover makes it clear that Honda designers and engineers worked hard to make it their own. The 2024 Prologue will offer the choice of front-drive or all-wheel-drive. The single-motor EX and Touring trims will be front-drive, while the dual-motor EX, Touring, and Elite models are all-wheel-drive. The two-motor all-wheel-drive models will deliver 288 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. Honda hasn't revealed the horsepower and torque ratings of the front-drive models. All Prologues will be fitted with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that will offer up to 300 miles on a charge. Using GM's Ultium batteries, the Prologue can use DC fast charging at rates up to 155 kW. Honda hasn't announced charge times but it says the Prologue's battery pack can add 65 miles of range in about 10 minutes using a DC fast charger. The interior is pure Honda, including the brand's newest Google-based infotainment system. Two hot but affordable sports models take center stage in our road test segment. Co-Host Chris Teague puts the 2024 Acura Integra Type S through its paces in the challenging conditions of rural Maine. Host Jack Nerad did the same with the Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary Premium Edition in the urban jungle of Southern California. In this week's news, the fuel economy rules proposed by the Biden Administration could add $3,000 to the price of the average car by 2032, according to information just released by a growing list of carmakers fighting against the new rules. We'll have the details along with our take on the situation. About half of electric vehicle owners say they will buy a particular type of vehicle the next time they buy one. Their answers could surprise you. We'll tell you what they plan to buy in this episode. Here's another good question we'll talk about this week: Do self-driving cars pose a danger to pedestrians? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration seems to think so, and we'll tell you more about their recent investigations. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Welcome to the best month on the calendar as we give a spirited UAW strike update, peruse the list of new vehicles over the next 18 months, and review the very first show at the site of the NADA Show opening party at the Las Vegas Sphere.Weekend tensions were rising between the UAW and the Detroit 3 as 7000 additional workers went on strike. Ford CEO Jim Farley alleges the union is holding automakers "hostage" with unreasonable demands, stating, "A bad deal would threaten midsize or expensive larger vehicles." and that if the goal was a historic contract, that was already on the table. UAW President Shawn Fain countered by accusing Farley of "lying about the state of negotiations." Fain emphasized, "Bargaining's always a two-way street," and criticized the companies for frequently shifting their stance. The dispute has now engaged approximately 25,000 workers. Nyle Maxwell, owner of four Stellantis stores and chairman of the Stellantis National Dealer Council, voiced concerns about the ongoing strike's impact on inventory and the supply chain. He's been stockpiling fast moving parts and highlighted the potential crunch on Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator inventory. Maxwell emphasized, "any additional strike targets are just going to cripple the entire supply chain." He urges "more strategic thinking and less bluster."Flashback to 2017: Automotive News released its first annual Future Product Pipeline listing all plug-in vehicles headed to market. The Chevrolet Bolt was a fresh face and Elon Musk was touted as a champion of a progressive audience as he announced his ambitious promise of a $35,000 Tesla Model 3 made headlines. Today the Model 3 is the number one selling EV on the market even though it never met that price point, and the Gen 1 Bolt is about to be history. We also share our thoughts on the future direction of the automotive landscape, with the lack of concept cars at this year's show, and the polarization between big trucks and performance vehicles in contrast with the continuing electrification of the industry. The all-new Chevrolet Blazer EV is rolling out. It will be a 2024 model year. And it's come a long, long way. First hitting the market in 1969, to say the nameplate has come a long way is an understatement. ⇒ Martin Chevy is an iDriveSoCal Official Chevrolet Dealer Because that Blazer was a short-wheelbase truck with a factory cab - more or less. But a little more than five decades later and Blazer has experienced a transformation. The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer electric vehicle is a super-stylish, zero-tailpipe emission, midsize SUV people hauler. And it's capable of doing some serious hauling. Clocking a zero to 60 mph time in under 4 seconds. As estimated by Chevy. 2024 Chevrolet Blazer SS EV @ LA Auto Show Overview - What We Know So Far Aside from being quick and super-stylish, Chevy's let a lot of info out. While there's on the way. Here's what we've got to date. For the first time that we're aware of, an EV is being released with any drive configuration. Including front-wheel, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive options! GM is estimating up to 320 miles of range on a full charge. Plus nearly 30 inches of digital display across the cockpit. Chevrolet is offering a trim for every price range and associated feature set. Providing ample customization of your Chevy Blazer EV. Including push-button-free auto start. Plus automatic lift gate access. One-pedal and Super Cruise hands-free driving. Worth noting, but not available to the public, is the Police Pursuit Vehicle. That's taking the top-level SS trim to a civic-duty level. Trims And Pricing - All-New Chevrolet Blazer EV Updates on reservations for the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV are available now HERE. More details on each specific trim availability date are available through Southern California Chevy Dealers. Like iDriveSoCal's partner, Martin Chevrolet. 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV - Trims & starting MSRPs: 1LT $44,995 2LT $47,595 RS $59,995 SS $65,995 PPV - law enforcement only Each trim has a slightly different rollout plan. So it's best to connect with a dealer. And that's to identify and order your Blazer EV. As well as determine exactly when it will be ready. Electric Motor, Power, And Performance While not all the stats are being reported by Chevy for each of the trims. The bow tie brand is releasing some impressive numbers for the 2024 Blazer EV. The top trim SS, Super Sport, trim delivers 557 horsepower with 648 pound-feet of torque. And that's with AWD. Additionally, it's the SS trim that times 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Braking from that acceleration is just as important. So the SS Chevy Blazer EV adds Brembo performance brakes in the front. Drivetrains Here's one of the truly interesting areas of Blazer EV. Power can come from anywhere. It's being based on trim. 1LT - FWD only. 2LT - FWD standard, AWD optional RS - FWD or RWD standard, AWD optional. SS - AWD only. The all-new Chevrolet Blazer EV also offers Regen Braking. And that converts kinetic energy from the vehicle's forward momentum into electricity. Helping to maximize range. While also allowing one-pedal driving. Whereas, when engaged, Blazer EV can come to a complete stop by fully releasing the accelerator pedal. Up to 320 miles of range Range and Charging - 2024 Chevy Blazer EV Your driving distance on a single charge varies by trim. For example, that 320-mile range comes with the RS trim. While the higher-performing SS trim delivers 290 miles on a full charge. Then the 1LT and 2LT trims provide 247 and 293 miles of range respectively. So all this range comes from different levels of charging. There is 11.5 kW level 2 charging and up to 190 kW public DC fast charging. Blazer EVs have the capability to fast charge through DC high-speed units. Adding 78 miles of range in just 10 minutes. A cool feature that caught our attention is a Blazer EV charging feature....
The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV promises to be one of the most exciting vehicles to hit the road next year. In SS trim it will offer 557 horsepower and 648 lb-ft of torque. That's exciting enough, but it will also be offered in a number of much more accessible versions, leveraging the General Motors Ultium platform, in a vehicle that could challenge the Tesla Model Y. To learn more about this amazing new model we went behind the scenes to interview one of the key members of the Chevy Blazer EV team, Our special guest is Bret Dick, the lead development engineer for the innovative vehicle. He'll reveal how the Ultium platform enabled Chevrolet to offer so many intriguing versions of the vehicle. There is sad news to report as well. A legendary American brand is saying goodbye to a pair of its signature models, and we'll give you the details in this episode of America on the Road. The brand is Dodge, and its executives have just announced that it will cease producing the Dodge Charger and the Dodge Challenger at the conclusion of the 2023 model year. In the meantime, Dodge plans to celebrate (mourn?) the passing of the two iconic performance cars by offering a plethora of special editions. We'll tell you about them. Also in the news, recently enacted federal legislation signed by the White House ends the longstanding $7,500 tax credit for the purchase of an electric vehicle. In its place is a much more complicated series of credits and incentives for consumers and global automakers. The big question is will it hurt the sales of electric vehicles? We'll try to sort it out for you coming up. This week Co-Host Chris Teague is back with us after a home disaster that prevented him from being on the show last week. The good news is he got plenty of additional time to drive the exciting 2022 Hyundai Elantra N. He'll let us know whether the road test vehicle is the match for his recently purchased Volkswagen Golf GTI. Also in the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad traveled across the country to Asheville, North Carolina, to drive the significantly revised 2023 Hyundai Palisade. The Palisade has the daunting task of competing against stalwart vehicles like the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot and Jeep Grand Cherokee. We'll tell you how we think it measures up. I got the chance to drive the significantly revised 2023 Hyundai Palisade at a driving event in Asheville, North Carolina. So we'll tell you all about that. All that and more coming up in this episode of America on the Road.
