Send us a textA profound shift is happening. After a decade of leading Hike Like a Woman, I'm transforming this platform into something deeply personal yet universally resonant. During a coffee conversation with a young military friend facing trauma, her question struck me to my core: "How do I move forward after something horrific?" While hiking solo through Moab's desert trails, the answer crystallized—my experiences with breast cancer, military service, and rebuilding life after trauma could serve others in ways my hiking content alone never could. The statistics are alarming. One in eight American women will face breast cancer, but for female veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, that risk skyrockets to one in four or five. My generation of veterans stands at the precipice of a potential reproductive cancer epidemic, yet these stories often remain untold. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro became my north star after cancer treatment—a tangible goal that helped me reclaim my body and spirit when everything familiar had been stripped away. That journey taught me lessons too valuable to keep to myself.Starting next week, this podcast transforms into The Rebecca Walsh Show, dedicated to cancer recovery, life after trauma, and finding purpose through life's most challenging terrains. I'll continue posting audio episodes every Tuesday, complemented by video content where I'll share stories from the forest. For those still seeking hiking and adventure content, Hike Like a Woman continues as a separate platform. If you've connected with my story, I invite you to join the community I'm building—whether through this podcast, my new YouTube channel, or the Kilimanjaro coaching Patreon. Alison Mariella Désir is an athlete, mother, activist, public speaker, community builder, and now a hiker and mountain climber. Désir is well known for her groundbreaking book Running While Black: Finding Freedom in a Sport that Wasn't Built for Us and for her work making space for and creating communities that center and welcome BIPOC athletes into the running and outdoor worlds. Désir was first featured on WRS in October 2022, when her book was released. That episode told the story of Désir's running life to that point. In this episode, Désir shares the story of how and why she summited Africa's tallest peak, Kilimanjaro (19,341 ft), with an all Black group of women who she'd previously never met. Before this trip, hiking wasn't an activity that had held much interest for Désir. Today, she's searching for what mountain she'd like to summit next. This is the story of discovering a new source of joy, empowerment, and rewarding challenge. As transformative as this journey has been, however, when Désir returned to the US, she was faced once again with the reality of most running, trail, and outdoor communities in this country, especially those with the greatest access to power and change: how they center and favor white athletes. Highlighting this reality, in particular, was an article in the popular trail and ultra publication I Run Far, "Women in Trail Running and Ultrarunning: Perspectives on the Challenges and Progression Toward Equity." The equity discussed, however, focused only on white women: written by two white women, all the sources for the story were also all white women (a deliberate editorial choice). Reflecting on the ongoing need for change, the need to get serious about inclusion, Désir's story ends with a call to action, a call for much needed conversations. “When you stop using the word can't and start using the word can, you'll soon realise that the person you thought you were is no match for the one that you really are.” In this episode of Tales to Inspire, Steve Hill shares his incredible journey from teaching to tackling some of the world's toughest challenges. Born and raised in Oldham, Steve has spent 28 years teaching, believing it to be the greatest privilege to inspire young minds. Steve's path changed after an unsatisfying stint as a quantity surveyor. His mother's advice to take action led him to try teaching, where he discovered his passion for guiding students through growth and teamwork. A moment of introspection 15 years ago led Steve to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, showing his students that he lived by the inspirational quotes in his classroom. This adventure was the first of many, including Mount Blanc, the Sahara Desert, the Arctic, and the Amazon jungle ultra-marathon. Each year, his students followed his journeys, learning about resilience and determination. Steve's challenges also supported various charities, nominated by his students. A memorable experience in Uganda, where a young boy shared his ice cream with Steve during a marathon, inspired him to establish the Team Hill Charitable Trust. The charity supports schools and clinics in Uganda and children and families in northwest England. During the lockdown, Steve wrote a book about his adventures, which captivated his students and further solidified his role as an inspirational figure. As he transitions from teaching, Steve aims to inspire thousands more through his charity, showing children that with hard work and big dreams, they can overcome any obstacle. Tune in to hear Steve Hill's journey, filled with adventure and the belief that when you start using the word “can,” you'll discover a new version of yourself. However, a new part of me was born. A part of me to achieve great things in life that my son Brian would no longer have the chance to do. My son, Kevin, has felt much the same way as me since his brother died. We have spoken extensively about wanting to challenge ourselves physically and mentally. Furthermore, I wanted to do something beyond my everyday life as a neurosurgeon. We were searching for a challenge that seemed impossible to us. Climbing the nearly 20,000 feet below-freezing, snow-covered peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro was what we landed on.Then, I met Daniel Frazier. Here is someone who survived a really high fall from a roof. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and a spine injury. For the last 2 years, while recovering from his injuries, Daniel has dreamed about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. A goal to challenge himself mentally and physically post injury. She offers a few digital courses and an online- zoom coaching course featuring her book. Prior to her work as a coach, she operated as owner and founder a personal training gym for sixteen years, so she knows what it takes to help people achieve big goals. She lives by example. In 2017, she traveled alone in Thailand and Vietnam and undertook her biggest challenge, climbing Kilimanjaro at the age of 61. Coaching others to step out of fear and into bigger versions of themselves is my passion. She is the mother of two grown sons and an active grandmother to four beautiful grandchildren. She is an avid hiker, biker, skier, yogi and pickleball player. She is passionate about my five-year-old Australian Labradoodle, Bliss. Crush your limiting beliefs and live you most authentic life. Set healthy boundaries and set yourself free. Shadow work-what is it and why does it matter? There is always a discrepancy between what we say we want and what we are experiencing. The answer lies in the disempowering beliefs and unconscious commitments hidden deep within our subconscious. Our subconscious beliefs continue to rule our operating system and get in the way of living our most joyful life. We tend to attract or be drawn to people that reflect back to us the things we believe about ourselves. Our inner critic guides us through the lens of “not enoughness”. To have the life we desire, we need to do the inner work of excavating those beliefs fro our childhood and replace them with new, empowering beliefs that reflect our adult goals and visions. Questions: What are shadow beliefs and how are they formed? How do our shadow beliefs keep us playing small? How do we uncover our beliefs? How do we use fear as a driving force for change? How to our shadow beliefs keep us from setting healthy boundaries. Renowned adventure photographer Laura Grier  has a knack for manifesting extraordinary opportunities. When she was presented with leading an all women's climb to the top of the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, she knew this would be one of her greatest physical and mental challenges of her life.  If the eight days and fifty one hours of climbing through blizzards and down pours was not difficult enough, Laura and her fearless crew of ladies became a fashion pit crew stopping each day for a photo shoot.  Each lady on the climb had a chance express themselves and mark this monumental adventure with a goddess portrait in something that looked right out of fashion magazine.  When you see the stunning images Laura captured (check the Travel With Meaning Instagram) of her goddess crew in the different landscapes that make up the climb wearing traditional African fabric purchased at a local market and in jewelry from the Maasai tribe it's hard to remember these women have been climbing for days with no showers. As a passionate advocate of local artisan, Laura is also co-founder of Andeana Hats made in Peru and Guatemala, she wanted these photo shoot images to also pay homage to local African artisans.  Small spoiler alert, all the women did summit and had an incredible adventure.  When we asked Laura what her biggest takeaway was from the trip she said this adventure really pushed her to practice being present and be in the moment.  As Laura said she realized many of her travels have involved her own search for being in the moment, staying present and this is a practice she has brought home with her.    To learn more about Laura and her incredible travel stories and background listen to episode seven of the TWM podcast - click here.   Enjoy this episode and make sure to check out the Travel With Meaning Instagram for the amazing goddess photo shoot images from the Kilimanjaro climb!

Mike Rhodes climbed Mount Kilimanjaro a few years ago with his friend, Scott. Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the highest peak in Africa and the world's tallest free-standing mountain. It's also the world's tallest walkable mountain—and what a walk it is. To reach the summit, one must pass through five distinct climate zones ranging from rainforest to alpine desert and eventually glacial Arctic. Although it is possible to climb Mount Kilimanjaro without any specific mountaineering training or equipment, summiting the Roof of Africa is not an easy task. Approximately 25,000 people attempt to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro annually. Approximately two-thirds are successful. Altitude-related problems is the most common reason climbers turn back.
