After Their Latest Loss, Are the Chiefs Still the AFC Top Dog? | Did the NFL Make the Right Decision in Moving the Patriots/Broncos Game? [Roundtable]

Nick Quaglia, Marv Ezhan, and Mike Molyneaux are back for another week of the CLNS Media Patriots Roundtable following an unplanned week off of football. Entering the 2020 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs were undoubtedly the best team in the AFC. Through the first four weeks, they lived up to expectations, taking down the likes of New England, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Houston. Come Sunday, the reigning Super Bowl Champions didn't look as invincible. The Las Vegas Raiders invaded Arrowhead Stadium and walked away with a 40-32 victory. That begs the question, moving forward are the Chiefs still the AFC favorite? After much discussion, the NFL decided to move the Patriots/Broncos game to Sunday, October 18th, effectively eliminating the Patriots bye week. This verdict was released just prior to Monday evening, the original reschedule date. In contrast, the Kansas City Chiefs were told to play on despite Stephon Gilmore testing positive for COVID-19 just days after their contest with New England. With multiple teams now at risk, is the NFL moving forward in a reasonable manner?

Welcome back to the 64th episode of the Brains, Braun, & Corbin Podcast. This week, we mix things up a little by changing up our usual order. We start by discussing comments from our last episode, and in the process, discover new ways to use Kurtis’ big jar of mayo. We then discuss our movie of the week: Come Sunday, and learn about casting out demons. Next, we introduce our newest segment “Genre Swap!” (or, as Jacob calls it, Movie Transformer!) by discussing how we would change Come Sunday into a horror film. Finally, we reveal the next theme of the month, Musicals, and decide between the two options Corbin brought to the table (begrudgingly).  Disclaimer: Explicit content. Don’t take anything seriously, no offense is intended

Healing was at the center of Jesus’ ministry.  Wherever he went, folks were eager for his touch upon their lives.  And a ministry of healing presumes there are hurting people looking to be restored.  This Sunday in worship, we will consider our own yearnings for wholeness – through the lens of Psalm 42.  And we will be offered the opportunity to share prayers for healing with one another.  Come Sunday – and let God touch your life!    -Pastor Derek

The Season of Waiting? (December 2, 2018) Sunday, December 2nd begins what in the Christian tradition is known as the season of Advent. It is a season of waiting, watchfulness, preparation. The preparation period probably feels appropriate, but how distinct is the waiting and watchfulness -- the quiet, still, attentive quality -- from flurry of Black-Friday-though-Monday, Giving Tuesday, and shop-til-you-drop madness of the next three weeks? Rare, perhaps, but the truth is that you and I need to know how to do advent times in our life. Life is full of them. And religion has found a way to help us be in them and get through them. Come Sunday. You deserve the break. Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister Richard Davis-Lowell, Worship Associate Dr. Mark Sumner, Music Director Alexander Rameses Taite, soloist UC Alumni and Men's and Women's Chorale Wm. Divine Cinema - Progressive Christian Movie Reviews & Analysis

Come Sunday is a film that finally tells the story of the journey into a type of Christianity that Divine Cinema and it’s hosts abide in.  However, is it a good film? Does the filmmaking bring to life the struggle in challenging a tenant of Evangelical theology and all the loss that comes with that, or does it just make you wish hell actually exists?  Listen to find out what Jeff, Dylan and Adam think. And of course to hear where they stand on its theological merits as measured by the tried and true pieces of silver rating system.   Divine Cinema Review of Come Sunday (04:42) Ratings and Redeemed Perspectives (45:54) PLOT SUMMARY After a series of tragic events, Bishop Carlton Pearson begins to question his long standing belief in hell.  Eventually he expresses this doubt in the most public way a pastor could, through a sermon. The sermon has a ripple effect, not just through his congregation, but in his family and American Christianity.  The film follows Bishop Pearsons journey as he is labeled a heretic by many of his congregants, colleagues and even friends. This episode considers the life and spiritual vision of the Rev. Carlton Pearson, subject of a popular This American Life episode as well as the recent Netflix bio-pic Come Sunday. When Rev. Pearson hears God reveal to him a potentially heretical view by way of a special revelation—universal salvation (everyone goes to heaven, and there is no hell)—he risks losing his congregation and jeopardizing his spot as a rising Christian star. How would people know whether God revealed new information by revelation? Along the way we talk about racial division in church, the pros and cons of revelation as a mode of spiritual discourse, and the reasonability of hell.

Welp, here we are again. Come Sunday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies will -- yet again -- be playing for their 2018 lives after dropping their first two games of the National League Division Series in Milwaukee. To get you set for Game 3 at Coors Field, we've got a fiery PDP. It'll start with us yelling to (and with...and at) you about some of the terrible takes regarding this Rockies offense. Colorado's bats have been nonexistent during the playoffs so far. Is that all Nolan Arenado's fault because he said in June that he wanted to play in big games and that's the one thing Denver sports radio has clung to from this season? No. Is it symptomatic of a mediocre offense with long-problematic fault lines that are being exposed on baseball's biggest stage? Yeah, that's probably more accurate. After we yell for a while, we attempt to get down to some facts and rational explanation as to why things could -- and should -- get better starting with Game 3. The Rockies won 36 of their final 50 games at Coors Field this year. They'll be throwing their two best pitchers in Games 3 and 4, and if they win Game 3, that includes their homegrown Denver native ace in Game 4 with a chance to even the series. If you're the Milwaukee Brewers, do you feel good about that matchup if you're unable to close this series out in three? We wouldn't.Finally, we give you some crazy predictions and try to laugh with you and get ourselves a little closer to yet another day watching baseball with our hearts in our stomachs and our stomachs in our throats and whatever else happens when you're watching what feels like the 1,000th elimination game in the last two weeks. It's the 152nd episode of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast. Let's do some more of these in 2018.

Heretics and Devils. Some would say they are not mutually exclusive, some would look closer at who is calling the kettle black. Then there are some who would say, "That's a good idea for a TV show!" That's what were talking about on today's podcast, the result of the latter.  Come Sunday is a docudrama and "Lucifer" is a crime procedural.  "Wait...huh?" you might say, but yes, Lucifer has more in common with Castle than it does with American Horror Story. What if we asked ourselves regularly who really is Jesus? Would this deepen our faith? Would this help us grow? Come Sunday we will explore a passage that shows us who Jesus really is. Welcome everyone to episode 201 of the Everyone’s Agnostic podcast. I’m Cass Midgley. Today, Bob Pondillo and I interview David Burns. David is now 50, but was a lifelong Mormon. He unpacks his passion for Mormonism, how it was his life, his tribe, his identity. He served his two year door to door mission and it was there that his faith in Mormonism experienced its first crack. I fell in love with David during this talk. He's a really sharp and gentle man and it comes through here. He's on the Asburger/Autism spectrum and his tendency to interpret everything literally contributed to his devotion to the whacky foundations of Mormonism AND eventually his departure. We taped this conversation on April 14th, 2018. We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. We think the world is a better place when more people live by sight, not by faith. Credits: "Towering Mountain of Ignorance" intro by Hank Green https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3v3S82TuxU Intro bumper "Never Know" by Jack JohnsonThe segue music on this episode is "Wake Me Up" by Dirty Loops I wonder if the need for human beings to find a tribe isn't a primary motivator behind the formation of and devotion to religions. We need to belong. Loneliness is so scary. And communities are one of the most beautiful things that humans form. There's hardly anything more fulfilling and life-enriching than finding yourself at a party, or in a circle of friends to which you truly belong, are genuinely celebrated, loved, and supported, in your truest form. When you're celebrating a promotion at work, or a new house, or a new baby, or marriage, or a birthday and you have a community of people around you that organize a celebration and/or send you cards in the mail, or bring you gifts, what better feeling is there? As a human being, we are aware of so much that the animal kingdom is not. We know that the universe is big, dark, and impersonal. We know that the world is a difficult place, with it's unpredictable weather and tragic happenstances. Animals don't get overwhelmed. We alone feel alone on this dirt clod hurling through space. We can feel adrift with nothing solid to hold onto. We can even be surrounded by people and feel totally alone. We can live in a city and feel no roots or connection to it. We look to our spouses and our children for some grounding and belonging, but can end up putting too much burden on them to validate and rescue our drowning, bankrupt self-esteem. We ache for friendships. Without them, we can feel lost, that the world is closing in on us, that nobody understands us, we can become disgusted with humanity, and quickly lose any desire to remain on this selfish, exclusionary planet. But when suicide is not an option, we re-enter the world, but in an angry, scared survival mode. We become racked with suspicion and distrust of others, further isolating ourselves. Our default is to blame others for our problems, and then we turn that blame inward spiraling us deeper downward into self-loathing (unconscious of course, nothing about this type of person is conscious). Pretty quick we see ourselves as victims and thus martyrs for our tail-chasing cause. So what do we do? Our tribal instincts kick in and we find other disenfranchised people, lost and lonely. Misery loves company, right? Safety in numbers. We rally with pitchforks to avenge our insulted egos against our enemies and the mere fact that we've formed a common enemy endears us to each other and the next thing you know, we've formed a tribe. But it's not a healthy tribe. It brings out the worst in us. It fosters resentment, contempt, and bitterness. It appeals to and compounds the lower angels of our nature--fearful, insecure, hateful, and our hatred for ourselves gets projected onto our unknowing enemies. On April 24th, Alek Minassian, the 25 year old Canadian man who killed ten and injured 15 as he drove a van down a one-mile stretch of sidewalk in Toronto, was allegedly a part of a tribe called the Incel Rebellion. Incel is short for involuntarily celibate. In other words, men who can't form relationships, or more crudely, can't get laid. And because of the internet, the group is said to be 5,000 members strong. Their common denominator is that they're furious at constantly being rejected by women. In the following conversation with our guest, your going to hear David talk about the strength of the Mormon community and the excruciating pain of detaching himself from his lifelong tribe that was precious to him, especially as one who'd felt excluded all his life. He, like many of us, threw himself headlong into the ministry he loved. It gave him purpose and identity and community. Life was good, and somewhat easy. What on earth would pry us out of those deep loving relationships with our Heavenly Father, our dear friend Jesus, our constant companion the Holy Spirit, and, most of all, our fellow human sojourners? The undeniable eye-opening discovery that its a delusional way of living? The corruption, the under-belly, the greed, the exclusivity? I watched the movie "Come Sunday" about the withering of Carlton Pearson's ministry as he came out as a universalist and began preaching what he called the Gospel of Inclusion. It's on Netflix; it was produced by Ira Glass and the This American Life staff. I recommend it but with a warning. You'll see the excruciating pain of Carlton praying and praying and crying out to God as his life was falling apart, but the heavens were silent. You'll see the tug of war on his heart as his giant ministry dwindled to a handful of people, all because he wouldn't recant or back-peddle from his convictions that no one was in Hell. At times, he can't believe the indignation he witnesses just because he believed Jesus saved everyone. How is this bad news? Brennan Manning, an author I loved when I was a Christian, gave this definition of Phariseeism: when you see love and grow indignant. But, like some of us, he lost everything--his income and career, his friends, even family. And this is why this podcast exists. I believe the power and pull and magnetism of community is at the core of why people unfriend us as soon as they perceive that we're saying something outside the beliefs that the community holds to. In their minds they have to make a choice...between you and the giant construct in which their entire lives are held together (they call it God). I'm sure it breaks their heart, but deciding to ditch us is probably much less difficult a decision than the one we're making. People have no idea...and they SO don't want to have that idea that they scoot us out of their lives as quickly as they can lest they begin to entertain it. The music stops and all the children scramble to plant their ass in a chair so they're not the ones left standing without one. People who gather under the banner of mutual hate get their identity from without. Their actions are reactive. They are hollow.  They are defined by what they hate, not by what they love. They don't even know what they love because they lack the self-awareness and agency to ask themselves, to go within. They are all-around no-sayers. They pout in self-pitiful tantrums that nothing is they way it should be. No to the persons, bodies and psyches in which they find themselves. No to people who are different. No to the harsh realities of existence. No to the abyss of random chaos in which they find themselves. They are ill-equipped to be overcomers, to find true meaning in this meaningless life. They fall under the trance of some fairy tale that keeps them childish.  And they're lazy. Making lemonade is hard work. 0ur proneness to tribalism can be used to elevate ourselves at others expense. We can take so much pride in our community that we move into feeling superior to other communities. We can live our lives fueled by comparing ourselves to others and competing with other tribes for power. Even healthy communities can fall prey to this. Perhaps you've been a part of a book club or a small group house church small group where the members bond and look forward to seeing each other every week or month. Then someone invites a friend and you can feel the elementary school resentment wrinkle it's nose at the invader. Now this isn't entirely evil or immature. I personally reserve the right to pick my friends and close the door on new seekers because the current chemistry is good and might be disrupted by introducing new blood. I think everybody' free to do that without shame. And the point is that relationships and communities are complicated and nuanced and even a bit fragile and have always been that way. The magic is so intense and the dynamics so delicate that friendships and communities that last a lifetime are extremely rare and thus you're very lucky if you pull that off. Even marriages have a much higher chance of losing their luster than remaining vibrant for the long haul.  So here we find ourselves...looking for love, for connectivity, for our tribe, our people. These magical relationships don't just happen. They form because we foster it intentionality. We set out to find friends, schedule get togethers, keep in contact, constantly navigating the feelings. Are they mutual? Do they like me as much as I like them? Am I smothering? Can I be myself and they still like me? Is there a breaking point on the horizon? A deal breaker? And if years go by, with dozens of dinners, engagements, parties under your belt and the intimacy is only deepening, you've won the lottery. You've hit the jackpot. Because 2 or 3 or 7 hominids getting together, enjoying each other for a long period of time is a rare and precious thing.

Dr. Daniels answers the ultimate question while also giving some insight about who we might be on this Earth. This is an episode you do not want to miss.

Whaddup my peoples!! In this episode we discuss Carlton Pearson and the new movie detailing his transition further away from orthodox Christian teaching. For those who aren't familiar with Carlton Pearson, he was a very influential Pentecostal Preacher up until about 2007. Not only did Pearson pastor a megachurch but he was also nationally known for preaching at various conferences and even putting some of today's most notable preachers on the map (i.e. TD Jakes). All of that came to a crashing halt when Pearson came to believe that God told him that there is no hell, Jesus has already saved everyone, and everyone is going to heaven. Pearson was rightly deemed a heretic by the ministerial authorities he was affiliated with and went on to continue preaching his "gospel of inclusion" in forums that would have him. Recently, this aspect of Pearson's story was captured in a Netflix Exclusive movie entitled "Come Sunday". Earlier this week I did a Facebook Live with some initial observations that I'd drawn from the movie. I'd intended to put out a full response to the questions and objections Pearson articulates in the movie, however, unfortunately I'm still getting over a pretty bad cold and was unable to do so. Also, I realized that in order to record an episode this week I would have had to record on the day my wife and I are celebrating our 9th anniversary. Husbandly wisdom leads me to believe that if I want to live to see our 10th anniversary then it would probably be a good idea to not spend this anniversary recording apologetics material rather than hanging out with my wife. LOL Candice don't play that! With that said I've converted that FB live to an audio episode which you'll get to see more of my off the cuff comical side along with theological and philosophical points that I believe will help Christians to work their way through difficult questions while avoiding patterns of thought or behavior that tend toward adopting heretical views of scripture. Next week we'll dig deeper into specific responses to the concerns raised by Carlton Pearson.

I watched the biopic on Bishop Carlton Pearson, “Come Sunday,” over the weekend. Since then, I’ve had an opportunity to digest what I saw, juxtaposing it with what I already knew about the man and the situation, and the firestorm of comments about the man and the movie. Here’s my take. First of all, I do not know Bishop Pearson personally. I cannot speak to his character. I do not claim to know what is on his mind. I only know that he is a gifted preacher, teacher, and singer. I know that he was successful in his calling and served as a model for many up-and-coming preachers. So, I cannot vouch for his character or his personal interactions — neither of which are my business, anyhow. That said, there was something said by the actor who portrayed him: “I heard from God.” There was a time in my life, not too long ago, where hearing these words from someone I considered suspect would cause my spiritual radar to go berserk. I mean, in order to hear from God, you had to be holy. You had to be righteous. You had be well-versed in Scripture and a theological pedigree didn’t hurt. I thought you had to be a special brand of special in order to hear from God. You had to be a Pastor. Or a Prophet. Or an Apostle. Or a Bishop. When I first heard from God (yes I did), I considered myself to be among the evangelical elite. I was a champion among charismatics and a Pentecostal poster-boy. Like many who heard from God, I thought I had arrived! But, when I came down from my high-horse, I realized that hearing from God is something that every believer can expect AND that hearing from God is always an edifying, albeit challenging, experience. I also learned that it was deeply personal. I have five sons. I have a unique relationship with each of them. And they are all different. And while I may give a blanket statement to the whole crew (e.g., “clean your rooms”), I relate to them uniquely according to their individual personalities. So what I say to each of them is different. My personality remains consistent between them but the words I speak are unique to each one. Any good parent knows that there’s no cookie-cutter approach to raising kids. I firmly believe God is a better parent than any of us. If anyone says, “I heard from God,” I process that as the personal experience that it is. And, as long as it doesn’t violate the loving nature revealed in Jesus, I trust that the individual is genuine in his or her testimony. So when I heard the person portraying Bishop Pearson say those words, I trust that He did, indeed hear from God. The big question, then, is did he hear clearly? So many folks are quick to rush to judgment, saying that what Bishop Pearson was saying was inconsistent with the Word of God. Really? Whose interpretation? After all, there are over forty thousand Christian denominations. And within those denominations, there are factions that disagree. Who, then, holds the monopoly on truth? The reality, here, is that Bishop Pearson simply said something that was contrary to an accepted standard. The Body of Christ is a funny creature — it cannot seem to agree on anything except patently visible “sins” (e.g., homosexuality and abortion) and perceived “heresy” (e.g., Inclusionism and Universalism). Bishop Pearson’s chief transgression, then, was that he proffered a theological position that ran contrary to someone’s interpretation of truth. Let me stop here and say, emphatically, I am neither an inclusionst nor a universalist. For the record, I do not believe in the construct of hell as a place of eternal conscious torment. I also believe that there will be far more people in heaven than most in mainstream Christianity suppose. Personally, I have learned to love to the degree that I hope everyone gets to spend eternity in the joyous presence of our Heavenly Father. I believe that, through Jesus, God has made this a present possibility that becomes a reality by our choice.

On The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, Carrington juxtaposes her salute to female artists by paying homage to various male artists who have either influenced her professionally and/or informed her musicality, such as Nick Ashford, George Duke, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross and Bill Withers. “Whenever I do something that celebrates women, I never want it to feel like it’s something that excludes men,” she explains. “On this record, I consciously wanted to celebrate the various relationships women have with men either through original songs of mine or cover songs by male composers and song writers.” The male presence and perspective on The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL is even more realized by Billy Dee Williams, who contributes insightful spoken-word interludes through the disc.

Blogging is a free opportunity available to anyone to communicate the gospel. We take a tongue-in-cheek look at why pastors should avoid starting a blog and then offer practical reasons why they should. To get started, you need your own website. I mentioned our affiliate link Bluehost, but there are others like godaddy.com and hostgator.com to name a few. Once you have your own web address, this is the free download I offered: Step By Step Process For Starting Your Own Blog. If you need some basic information about social media, here is my free eBook.  Transcript of Today's Podcast Welcome to ministers toolbox. Specifically there are 7 reasons pastors should never even think about starting a blog. (Sarcasm included) #1 - It is too difficult. I mean, you have to turn the computer on, open up your WordPress site and push the new post button. If that isn’t bad enough, then you actually have to write something. That is not easy for a pastor. I mean, in your line of work, when do you ever write? Yeah, there are your sermons, but those are for Sunday mornings. Yeah, sermons are constructed like a blog, but it’s not like you could just take former sermons and turn them into blogs. That would take too much time. Besides, a lot of pastors are not comfortable pushing the submit button when they’re finished. #2 - There are too many blogs already. Most don’t even know what the word blog means. It kind of sounds like someone dumped a mixture of mashed potatoes and pea soup on your plate right on top of your salad.  blog! Who reads them anyway? You have better things to with your time, like visiting with Mrs. Smith who wants you to walk her cat when she goes on vacation. #3 - People outside your church might read something you’ve read and decide to come Sunday morning. I mean, at your church you say you want new people, but truthfully, you really don’t. Every time a new person comes to your church you have to learn their name and spend time trying to find out what they need and how you can help. It is much easier to have the same people come to church each week. They come; they tithe; they have coffee and then they leave. What could be better than that? No muss, no fuss. Blogging could mess up your church big time. Before you know it, new people might start sharing new ideas and that can be just annoying. You already know who you are and how you like the church to operate, thank you very much. #4 - You’re not very techy. Yeah, you understand that everyone under thirty has never lived in a world without the Inter web, but technology is not your thing. You’d much rather read a book about Spurgeon than learn about Tweeter or Facebook anyway. Besides, you got an email account a couple of years ago. If anyone wants to get ahold of you, you check it once a week. #5 - Privacy. Blogging means that people might start coming up to you and talking to you about what you wrote. That can be very awkward, especially if you’ve never met them before. One reason you like pastoring is that other than Sunday, people pretty much leave you alone. Blogging might change all that. #6 - Cost. Blogging is expensive. I mean getting a domain name and website has got to cost a fortune. The church budget is tight and wasting money on the Interweb is just foolish. #7 - It could lead to other things. You start blogging and before you know it, you’re writing books. Then you’re meeting new people and going different places to speak. That is just a real pain. Do you realize how many re-runs of CSI you’d miss if you had to be out speaking all the time? Blogging is just not the right fit for pastors. ____________________________ Well, that’ll be enough tongue and cheek for now. Pastors, why aren’t you blogging? Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past two decades, the Internet is the largest fishing pond for reaching people for Christ in history. It has never been easier to get started even if you have no tech skills or training like me. Will you have to learn a few things? Yes. Is it hard to learn? No. Especially since there are loads of people at your fingertips to help you every step of the way. Technology has advanced exponentially. Years ago, the idea of getting a church website involved lots of money and paying someone with technical expertise to run it. Those days are gone. You don’t need to know anything about code, HTML at all. Nearly everything is point and click with incredible free help along the way. What is a blog anyway? Well, a blog is the shortened form of what it used to be called, web log. It is the equivalent digital paper. How many blogs are there? Currently, there are over 200 million with 175K being added every day. I guess it is popular then. Is there a better way to spend your time. I can’t answer that for you, but let me ask you a question. Why do you spend 10-20 hours writing sermons? Come Sunday morning, you deliver that sermon with all the passion in your heart hoping that your congregation will not only hear what you’re saying, but apply it to their lives and grow in Christ, right? Here is something that won’t make you happy. Your congregation retained 10% of what you said, assuming it was a great sermon. If they genuinely grasped one idea and took action that is a home run. If 1 in a 100 did that, you are an effective pastor. Those are pretty poor numbers. What happens on Monday? Start designing another sermon. Sunday’s sermon is like yesterday’s newspaper. After putting in all that work, wouldn’t you like your sermons to have a more lasting effect? Blogging does that. You can put it on the Internet permanently, accessible for many years to come. I said earlier that blogging might bring people to your church and that most churches really don’t want new people. That is quite true. When pastors were asked what the purpose of the church is, 90% said to reach the lost. When church members were asked the same question 90% answered, to meet my needs. We spend money on initiatives, but the reality is that most church members really don’t care if new people come. It requires them to learn names, get in conversations , etc., and most people think their life is too busy already. Spending more time getting to know more people is just too much effort. As a church leader, your job is to lead people where they don’t want to go. If selfishness is permitted to reign, your church will never fulfill God’s purpose for it. Blogging has the potential of connecting you with people you’ve not met and they may come to church because they like what they read. Probably won’t happen overnight, but when you commit to communicating on the web consistently, you start to get known. One of the largest barriers I hear from church leaders is that they are just not very techy. I understand that; neither am I. Back in the day, I served in a church where the leadership was anti-computer. They saw no need to have one or use one. Of course in those days, computers cost $1200 and had monitors with amber screens. As the pastor, I insisted and got my computer with a 40 MB hard drive, which I was told would be enough for a lifetime. Ok then… Back in those days, the only way I knew to learn was to push the f1 button whenever I got stuck. That would bring up options on the screen and as I followed the instructions, I usually figured it out, or rebooted the computer. Knowing a little MS Dos was always a plus. That is ancient technology. Today you can be a tech wiz and know almost nothing about HTML code or any of that stuff. Anything you do on the computer usually has access to an immediate chat with a tech person to get you answers fast. Beyond that, what would you do if God called you to missions? First thing you would do probably is start learning the language and the culture. I think you see where I am going. If you want to reach this generation, learn their culture and their language. It is all Internet based. I doesn’t matter whether you like it or not. If the natives speak Chinese you learn Chinese. If the natives speak tech, learn enough to communicate. Now let’s get down and dirty. The main reason you don’t want to blog or get a website is cost. You think it costs hundreds or thousands of dollars and that you need to hire some geek to show you the way. Completely wrong. First things first. To get blogging you need your own website. Why? A website is your permanent home on the Internet. You control it totally. Like a house, you can determine precisely how you want it to look without having a clue about HTML or any other tech-sounding terminology. The best place to start in my opinion is Bluehost. You’ve heard me mention them before, and you will probably hear me mention them again. To create a website, you need a company to host it. No way around that. Go daddy, Host gator and others each come with step by step instructions to create your own website. You do not need a website builder anymore unless you’re a corporation and need intricate and specialized work. Bluehost is the only host that currently will not host pornographic sites. I personally like that commitment which is why I use them. Bluehost is also inexpensive; about $4/month. Pastor, what makes blogging unique for you is that you’re already doing it every time you put together a sermon. Every sermon you write (assuming  it is good of course!) can be re-purposed into a blog and maybe even a book. With a blog, you just cut and paste your notes into WordPress which is nearly identical to Microsoft Word in feel and function. You do a little editing and away you go. It won’t be perfect the first time or even the second, but the key to blogging and anything in the Internet world is consistency.  Choose your best day for releasing your blog and then stick to it. I started blogging 4 years ago using a free site. I blogged about 3 times in a year. That’s not blogging. In January of this year, I committed myself to every week. That means that on Friday morning at 6:50 a.m., my blog is up and on Facebook, Twitter and Email simultaneously. The same is true for podcasting or whatever you do. It is the same as putting a sign on your shop telling people when you open. Blogging will help your preaching. As you refine your writing skills, it affects how you communicate. You will discover what impacts people and what doesn’t. One of the challenges of Sunday morning preaching as leaders is that we get very little honest feedback. Our sermons can be awful and still everyone tells us how great they are. In blog world, people are a lot more honest. Not necessarily more critical, but honest. They vote by following you. With a blog you can invite discussion and ask for input. It puts you in the marketplace where pastors belong. As leaders, we need to be speaking God’s mind and heart to the web world. Finally, blogging can turn into books very easily. And here is something you might not know. You can write a book this morning and post it on Kindle tonight. They days of begging publishers to accept our books or paying thousands to self-publish are all but over. For virtually no cost, you can get your books on Kindle with their own website address that can be posted in emails, on business cards or wherever you interact. If people buy, you get 70% of the sale. You will not find that with paper books. The cool thing with Kindle as well, is that you can update books effortlessly, add new pictures, new links to your church or products…the sky is the limit. Your blog website then becomes your internet real estate; Your home, where people can find you. Our mission at Minister’s Toolbox as you know is to provide you with tools to be successful in ministry. I think by now you get how passionate I am about using your gifts to reach a larger audience. As a pastor or church leader, I challenge you to take a long hard look at the impact of your ministry. Where will your church be in 10 or twenty years? Are you preparing your church for the future, or clinging to the past? Pastors ought to be on the cutting edge of technology, not to be cool, but to be relevant. You may love the smell of a good book, but in all likelihood the people God wants you to reach love the smell of a new IPhone. New technologies are coming out all the time and each has great potential to advance the gospel of Christ’s kingdom. This show is about blogging, but once you get your feet wet, I hope that I can nudge you towards podcasting as well. There are over 540 million podcast downloads per month. Shouldn’t the church be seizing that opportunity? In any case, I really do appreciate you taking the time to let me rant a bit today. One of your greatest strengths as a church leader is communication. In what other type of employment are you expected to give weekly speeches? Very few. Blogging is such a natural for church leaders and there are no limits of how you can use it. I have put together a free guide outlining some simple steps to take should you decide to start your own blog here. As always we end with a quote: This one most appropriately is from Steve Jobs: “People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
