What are we not hearing? A microphone is a passport to get into places we normally can't get into. And, above all, to hear what happens in places under the weight of a great silence. In January, we grabbed microphones and recorders and entered Zaballa prison, in Álava (Spain). We had one question: how to tell outside what happens inside.

This week we welcome Grammy award-winning country star, John Berry! GRAMMY Award-winning country star John Berry celebrates 42 years as a Country music performer. In 2020 Grammy award-winning country star, John Berry took advantage of being off the road. Highlights include partnering with Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt for his weekly series, "Songs and Stories For Kids," which charted multiple times on the Pollstar Live Stream Chart. He released a new video and re-recorded a new single for "The Graduation Song," started his new podcast, Faith Family & Friends and is ending the year with his 24th annual Songs and Stories with John Berry Christmas. In 2019 John Berry celebrated the 28th anniversary since signing his first record deal with his most recent single “The Richest Man” from the new album Thomas Road. In 2019, Berry was diagnosed with throat cancer, requiring 35 treatments combined of radiation and chemotherapy. In 2018 charted at #30 on the Music Row Breakout Charts with the single, “Beautifully Broken,” which is featured in the soundtrack for the movie of the same name. The singer-songwriter rose to stardom on the country charts of the 1990s with such mega hits as Your Love Amazes Me, Standing on the Edge of Goodbye and She’s Taken a Shine. His annual Christmas tours brighten the holidays for thousands, as does his electrifying rendition of O’ Holy Night. During the 90’s and early 2000’s, John placed 20 singles on the country charts, 6 of which went Top 5, with Your Love Amazes Me, scoring a #1 on the Billboard and Radio & Records Country Chart as well as Standing on the Edge of Goodbye and She’s Taken a Shine earning the #1 slot in Radio & Records. He has earned multiple Gold and Platinum records over the years. John was nominated for the ACM Top New Male Vocalist in 1994, won a Grammy Award in 1996 for his participation in Amazing Grace: A Country Salute to Gospel Vol. 1, was nominated for another Grammy in 1995 for his smash hit Your Love Amazes Me and was nominated for the CMA Horizon Award and Top Male Vocalist Award in 1995. In 1997 he was nominated for Vocal Event of the Year (for Long Haired Country Boy with Charlie Daniels and Hal Ketchum) and in 2013 John was nominated for the Mainstream Country Male Artist by the ICM Awards. And thanks to the miracles of modern technology, he even sang a duet with the late, great Patsy Cline. “I love what I do, with a passion not seen in quite some time. I’m hopeful and excited about the future. I love singing and always will. I have a bus, an incredible stage presentation, a great band, hands-on management team and I’m always all dressed up and ready to go.” John’s enduringly powerful performances draw on a lifetime of making music and living life. Born in South Carolina and raised in Georgia, he began playing guitar at 13, performing shows at age 14 and making records at age 19. “By the time I was 17, I knew that music was what I wanted to do with my life”; and he has done it well ever since. Between 1979 and 1990 he recorded and marketed six albums on his own labels. The Graduation Song, which he wrote during his senior year in high school, became a perennial favorite at graduation ceremonies. It appeared on two of his early collections. Those early discs and John’s strong regional popularity attracted attention on Music Row. Capitol Records signed him to his first major label contract in 1992. Berry’s co-written hits A Mind of Her Own and Kiss Me in the Car introduced him to radio audiences in 1993. Then Your Love Amazes Me, What’s in it for Me and You and Only You thrust him to stardom in 1994. Standing on the Edge of Goodbye, I Think About it all the Time, and If I Had Any Pride Left at All were all major hits the following year, with Standing on the Edge of Goodbye earning John the coveted 1995 Grammy nomination. But it was his stunning performance of the title track of the 1995 CD O’ Holy Night that led to his most enduring legacy to date. John began doing special Christmas tours that year and 2016 marks his 20th anniversary holiday concert tour. He has big plans to celebrate and involve the fans like never before for this anniversary celebration. He has also issued three more Christmas-music collections. If O’ Holy Night is all that anyone remembers of me, that’s fine with me,” he comments about his perennial Christmas popularity. “It is a truly inspired piece of music.” Happily, there were more successes to come. The hit Change My Mind earned John a Top-5 spot on the Country music charts in 1996. She’s Taken a Shine became an even bigger hit in 1997. Both fans and the media took note again when There He Goes was released as a 1999 duet with Patsy Cline. In 2002, Berry returned to making records for his own company, Clear Sky Records. Songs and Stories, a double CD was issued that year. In 2003, John Berry released his I Give My Heart collection and its critically applauded wedding anthem Will You Marry Me. The disc also contained his versions of such classic love songs as Time in a Bottle, If, Love Look What You’ve Done to Me, Faithfully, Lady and Let’s Stay Together. I Give My Heart inspired still another popular concert series, The Love Tour. In 2008, Those Were the Days, was released, marking John’s return to mainstream country music. He created his first Christian-music CD in 2011. In 2012, John published the combination book and CD, again titled Songs and Stories. Over the years he has continued to tour steadily. “We just have a great group of fans who welcome us every year. They are always there.” In late 2015 John launched a crowd funded Kickstarter project that proved very successful. Overwhelmed by the fan response, John assembled an all-star studio team and cut both a Country album entitled What I Love the Most and a new album simply titled Christmas and released both in late 2016. Blessed with the ability to make the music he wanted to make (and not what a label dictated) allowed John the time to write and create what many music critics who have heard bits & pieces are saying could be his best, most complete project yet. “I'm excited to have been able to release this new music and bring it to the fans through a new distribution agreement with Sony RED. It’s a new time in the music business and technology allows me to be closer to my fans and interact in new ways. You know, God just keeps blessing me. There are new opportunities coming at every turn.” “With time, I’ve learned that the road to fulfillment is doing what I was called to do, love to do, and then doing it the best I can, regardless of the circumstances. And for me, that is making music and singing for people." 2017 found John touring in several configurations (acoustic solo, acoustic trio and full band) with plans to release another new album followed by the continuation of his legendary Christmas Tour. He and his family moved back to Music City after several years in Georgia, and 2017 saw John pursuing a touring and personal appearance schedule that is more active than ever. Given his wide range of music and number of releases, John is fortunate in that he can book a solo show with just himself and guitar, a small-band acoustic show or a full-band engagement and has more than enough hit material to captivate a crowd and deliver an evening full of musical memories. Also, in August of 2017 John launched a new, weekly internationally syndicated television show entitled Songs and Stories with John Berry that explored the songs and stories that changed the lives of his weekly guest. Superstar guests in Season 1 of the show included Billy Ray Cyrus, Billy Dean, Mo Pitney, Neal McCoy, Suzy Bogguss, Collin Raye, Craig Morgan, Mark Wills, Delbert McClinton, Clay Walker and Lee Roy Parnell. 2018 John celebrated his 25t h anniversary since signing his major label deal, Season 2 of Songs and Stories with John Berry aired multiple times weekly to over 105 million homes across the United States as well as the UK and New Zealand on great networks like Heartland Television, The Family Channel, The Country Channel, Phil Mack’s Keep it Country (UK), Country TV (New Zealand) and AMGTV. In 2018 charted at #30 on the Music Row Breakout Charts with the single, “Beautifully Broken,” which is featured in the soundtrack for the movie of the same name. John also toured the country in all performance sectors, releasing several new projects and a few surprises. 2019 continued to celebrate the 26th anniversary since signing his first record deal with his most recent single “The Richest Man” from the new album Thomas Road.
In January 2019 , Berry was diagnosed with throat cancer, requiring 35 treatments combined of radiation and chemotherapy. A benefit concert was held with performers such as Garth Brooks, The Oak Ridge Boys, Vince Gill and over 24 other high profile entertainers from Country, Americana and Rock, raising funds to offset his out of pocket medical expenses, while also donating a significant portion of the proceeds earned to others in the music community in need via Music Health Alliance. 2020 has many as of yet undisclosed plans which will include his annual John Berry Songs and Stories Christmas Tour, marking its 24th year. Five years before economy could return to pre-Covid levels, says Absa’s Gable

It will, most likely, take half a decade before the South African economy returns to the level it was at the end of 2019, says Absa chief economist Jeff Gable. “And 2019 was a miserable year for South Africa – the economy grew barely 0.5%. On top of that we weren’t doing great in the previous years either. So the baseline of 2019 is very undemanding.” In January, Absa’s forecast for economic growth was between 1% and 1.5%, with the expectation that at the end of 2021 the size of the economy, adjusted for inflation, would be roughly 3.5% bigger than it was at the end of 2019. Then, however, Covid-19 happened. Now Gable expects that the domestic economy will still be 4.5% weaker at the end of 2021 than at the end of 2019, with “the end of 2019 far from a promising position for South Africa”. “It will be late 2024, 2025, before South Africa can get back to where we were at the end of 2019. “The impact of Covid-19 is very substantial. It is going to be very long-lasting.” Industries in South Africa that will show a greater than 20% contraction this year will be catering/accommodation (greater than 60%), construction and the motor trade, says Gable. The manufacturing, mining and transport sectors are likely to contract by between 10% and 20%, with the real estate, electricity, personal services and retail sectors to shrink by between 5% and 10%. The only two sectors to show growth will be telecoms and agriculture, with telecoms benefitting from the increased use of IT services during Covid-19, and the agriculture sector reaping the benefits of a good rainy season. With the Covid-19 global economic shock bigger than the great depression in the early 1930s, it is expected that South Africa will continue to shed jobs, adds Gable. With an estimated million jobs already lost in the formal sector, “I have a strong expectation that it will get worse before it gets better”. If the forecast is that South Africa will take a half a decade to return to where it was in 2019, it means that businesses will, in the meantime, most likely be smaller than in 2019 – which means that their ability to hang on to excess staff will “probably be pretty modest”, says Gable. The one-million jobs already lost will add to South Africa Inc’s smaller wallet, with between R80-billion and R300-billion in consumer spend disappearing. Government’s drive to decrease the public sector wage bill is expected to further add to the drop in consumer spending.

President Cyril Ramaphosa used the platform of the third South Africa Investment Conference to underline the country’s potential to act a gateway to the African market, as he sought to reignite investor interest in an economy that has been underperforming for more than a decade and has been severely damaged since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2018, Ramaphosa set a five-year target of securing R1.2-trillion in new investment and in 2018 and 2019 combined investment pledges worth R664-billion across 102 projects had been made by domestic and foreign investors. To date, R172-billion of the committed amount had actually been invested. The investment outlook had been severely hurt by the pandemic and Ramaphosa reported that 21 projects, representing about 10% of the total commitments, had been delayed or placed on hold as a result. In an address designed to highlight the efforts under way, including the implementation of reforms in the areas of energy and the digital economy, to improve the investment climate, Ramaphosa argued that the African continent stood “on the cusp of a new era in its economic development”. “In January next year, the African Continental Free Trade Area will take effect, establishing a continental market of some 1.3-billion people with a combined gross domestic product (GDP) in the region of $2.3-trillion dollars,” he said, describing it as one of the largest free trade areas globally. “With its advanced infrastructure, diverse economy, sophisticated capital markets and developed manufacturing capacity, South Africa is the ideal location for any company wanting to reach the continental market with greater effectiveness from a cost and logistical point of view,” the President said. The recently launched Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan also included the further integration of the Africa market as a key priority, alongside the other priorities of implementing a large-scale infrastructure roll-out, bolstering energy security and undertaking initiatives to stimulate job creation and localisation. “The private sector is vital to the achievement of these priorities and shifting the economic trajectory of our country. This is particularly true of our infrastructure programme, which relies on private investment in new infrastructure projects to create efficient, world-class network infrastructure and boost aggregate demand.” Ramaphosa added that the newly activated Infrastructure Fund would direct public funds in a way that could leverage private investment at a larger scale. Government has committed R100-billion for the fund for the coming ten years. The President also used the occasion to showcase the Operation Vulindlela initiative set up jointly by the Presidency and the National Treasury to oversee the reforms required to improve the business and investment climate. “Operation Vulindlela will ‘open the way’ for high-impact economic reforms in network industries such as energy, water, telecommunications and transport, as well as in attracting critical skills and streamlining the visa regime,” Ramaphosa said, adding that the team reported implementation progress directly to him. “We will focus on a number of priority reforms with clear timeframes and make sure they are effectively and swiftly executed.”

Big, high walls can be troublesome. Ask Humpty Dumpty. However, for a real-life, epic story about wall troubles, ponder the trials and tribulations of our very own president. He can’t seem to get his one, “big beautiful wall” funded or even taken seriously, much less built. Trump has continuously demanded that Congress shell out more than 10 billion of our taxpayers’ dollars to erect a monster of a wall across some 2,000 miles of the US border with Mexico, ranting that his magnificent edifice would keep “aliens” from entering the US from the south. But even when his own party controlled both houses of Congress, his grand scheme went unloved, unfunded, and unbuilt. Still, he persists. In January, he directed officials to put up a demonstration section of his 30-foot-tall wall to show the world how effective the Trump bulwark would be. But the thing blew over! Not from a hurricane-force storm, but from moderate winds topping out at only 37 miles an hour. Embarrassing. More embarrassing was a personal visit Trump made to San Diego last September for a media event hailing a new supertech model of wall that he declared would be “virtually impossible” for violators to climb, signing his name on the structure. “I tell you this strongly,” Humpity-Trumpity said, “No more people can come in.” But a climbing group in Kentucky built a replica of that wall and held an up-and-over competition – winning time was 13.1 seconds! Dozens of competitors easily topped it, including an eight-year-old girl and a guy who climbed it one-handed while juggling various items with his other hand. Trump has, however, proven that one thing truly is impenetrable – his head. Absolutely no embarrassment, logic, or factual evidence can enter his locked mind and show him how silly this extravagant folly is.

Hello to you. My name is Michael Santos and on behalf of everyone on our team, I welcome you. Our websites include PrisonProfessors.com and ComplianceMitigation.com.   We offer services to help people and businesses with risk mitigation and avoiding government investigations.   For those who have been targeted for prosecution, we create mitigation strategies. We help with sentencing and preparations for the journey ahead.   Visit us at either Prison Professors dot com or compliance mitigation dot com. Call or text 949-205-6056.   Episode: 153: Why Every Business Should Invest in Compliance Training   If we ask any group to give us their impression of successful technology companies, we’re likely to hear the following names: • Apple, • Google, • Facebook, • Amazon, and • Microsoft. Many of us would consider the above-mentioned companies as models of excellence. They’re famous for creating trillions of dollars in value, creating millions of jobs, generating billions of dollars in tax revenues, and providing enormous value to consumers. Besides being success stories, the companies share something else in common. Each of the above-mentioned companies has been the subject of a government investigation. Our team at Compliance Mitigation does not make a judgment call with regard to the reasons behind the investigation, or the usefulness that the investigation would serve. Rather, we want more entrepreneurs, business leaders, and team members to understand how government investigations can threaten businesses and careers. The more a person knows, the more equipped a person becomes to make better decisions—hopefully to avoid being brought in as a witness, a subject, or a target of a government investigation. From our perspective: • Business leaders define success by solving problems for customers, bringing value to shareholders, and creating jobs that contribute to vibrant communities. • When investigators begin their task, they define success by obstructing business operations, or complicating the lives of business leaders and the entire teams that they target. Big-government leaders do not limit their attacks to the most successful companies. Elected officials create many government agencies that investigate business operations, business leaders, and people who have decision-making power in businesses. That means even small companies—and leaders of those companies that have decision-making power—are also vulnerable to government investigations and to charges for white collar crimes. For that reason, it makes sense for business leaders to learn about government investigations. That insight can help people involved in businesses both save and make money. You might ask, “How can investing in compliance help a company or people make more money?”  • Compliance is all about transparency. It’s about documenting processes and following best-practice approaches to business. The more we train people how to follow such procedures, the more effective we become at messaging. If we communicate well, we’re more successful at showing the value proposition we offer. How does investing in compliance help a company or an individual save more money? • Investing time and energy to develop effective compliance systems is like an insurance policy. It can lead to lower business insurance costs, and it can lower the enormous risks that business owners and decision makers have to reserve for litigation expenses. Good compliance systems can also lower the risk levels to corporate fraud. Besides saving or making money, investing in ongoing compliance training represents an excellent insurance policy for the company. No company wants to become the subject of a government investigation. They are costly. In many cases, those costs exceed millions of dollars, both for the business and in many cases, for individuals. Investigations, potentially, can obliterate a business and lead to loss of liberty for some people.   Evaluation: In June 2020, the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division updated its Evaluation of Corporate Compliance Programs. Essentially, the government white paper offered guidelines for prosecutors to consider when they deliberated over offering leniency, non-prosecution agreements, or deferred-prosecution agreements to businesses. According to the guidance, prosecutors must question the business as follows: 1. Is the corporation’s compliance well designed? 2. Is the program being applied earnestly and in good faith? In other words, is the program adequately resourced and empowered to function effectively? 3. Does the corporation’s compliance program work in practice? If we know that prosecutors will ask those questions when assessing a business’s compliance program, then business leaders and team members should ask similar questions. By investing time, energy, and resources to understand the importance of compliance, leaders can design a best-practice approach in the design of their compliance training. Large companies may deploy resources to hire white-glove law firms that specialize in risk management. Those law firms may earn millions of dollars in fees by doing a deep dive to understand a company’s operations. They will perform risk assessments to identify potential problems, assessing the regulatory landscape, the potential clients and the business partners, as well as transactions with foreign governments, payments to foreign officials, use of third parties, political contributions, and so forth. Small to mid-size companies may not have the resources to hire such law firms. Yet if they’re doing business, their lack of resources will not make them any less vulnerable to investigations and potential prosecution. In fact, those small- to medium-sized businesses may be easier targets for government investigators. For this reason, all businesses benefit by helping team members learn more about the real-life consequences that followed for people that lost their liberty as a result of government investigations. Such training spreads awareness on the collateral consequences that follow bad decisions made during the course of business. In making people more aware, our team at Compliance Mitigation can lessen risks for individuals, and for businesses that want to show a commitment to minimizing problems with regulators. Companies that want to minimize risk levels would do well to train their team members. As we say at ComplianceMitigation.com, we did the time so you won’t have to.   Corporate Fraud: Internal corporate fraud is an ever-growing problem. Government prosecutors bring charges against thousands of people every month for white collar crimes. Those charges leave businesses vulnerable to ongoing problems, including massive legal fees, large fines, and potentially, criminal liabilities. Management leaders may not have a clear process on how to prevent fraud, or how to respond if they uncover a fraud. We offer this introductory compliance course to assist companies with the following objectives: (i) Help all team members understand the implications of a government investigation, (ii) Identify best practices within corporate operations, and encourage employee compliance, (iii) Improve messaging and corporate storytelling, (iv) Minimize risk to litigation, (v) Teach businesses how to develop a best-practice approach to respond to a government investigation, (vi) Develop a mitigation strategy in the event of a government investigation. We encourage company leaders to use the modules our team at Compliance Mitigation creates to help more people understand the costs and collateral consequences of a government investigation. Strength comes through proper preparation. Members of our team have worked with numerous entrepreneurs that didn’t know their business practices violated regulations, or how their policies could expose them to the enormous costs of litigation or a government investigation. For example, a small business that advertised debt-relief services accepted advance payments from consumers. The business owner hired scores of telemarketers that sold the service. By accepting advance payments from consumers, the business leaders and decisions makers made themselves vulnerable to government investigations. They didn’t understand the Federal Trade Commission’s prohibitions against collecting advance fees.   Nor did they understand how a government investigation could lead to: • litigation, • an asset freeze, and • forfeitures that would cripple their business. Good compliance training helps leaders make better decisions. By investing time to both learn and teach, leaders can create a culture that minimizes exposure to risks in an era of big government. Larger companies have different complications. People become complacent, expecting that they’re operating without risk to regulation or interference from government. Sadly, many rank-and-file employees get dragged into investigations. Their responses to the investigations can bring them into further problems. Our nation’s prison system confines thousands of people that once worked in large companies. Prosecutors convicted those people of white-collar crimes, even though the people professed to be doing their jobs without any knowledge that they were breaking laws. Other people began working in a company with the best of intentions. Yet something happened during the course of the person’s career. Thinking that they could get away with something, they engaged in behavior without fully understanding the consequences. For example, consider the case of David Smith, who faced charges for crimes he committed while on the job as a manager at Quest Diagnostics. David concocted a reimbursement scheme, creating systems that would lead his employer to reimburse him for fraudulent expenses that ran through a complex web of transactions. Smith created fake companies, invoices, and expense reports for payments he’d supposedly made on Quest’s behalf. An internal investigation revealed that Smith had forged his boss’s signature. The internal investigation uncovered losses totaling more than $1.2 million. Quest referred the case to the FBI. A judge sentenced Smith to five years in prison. Beside the financial loss and Smith’s criminal liability, the distraction undermined confidence in Quest Diagnostic’s management team.   Better compliance training serves companies and individuals by: • Broadening an awareness of the consequences that follow white collar crime, • Helping people think before they compromise their values, • Providing transparency into businesses processes, potentially lessening occurrences of internal corporate fraud.   Fraud Triangle: People like David, in the example above, may not set out to engage in fraudulent behavior. Educators identified a “Fraud Triangle” that, theoretically, created a perfect storm for fraud. The three corners of the triangle include: • Opportunity: A person like David Smith had to be in the position that would allow him to create the scheme. If he were not in a managerial position, he would not have been able to initiate the scam. • Pressure: David Smith’s supervisors may have considered him a competent, trustworthy employee. They may not have known pressures he felt in his personal life. • Rationalization: A person like David Smith may think that the company is so big and profitable that no one would even notice the missing funds.   Although hindsight is 20/20, we can always learn from real case studies: • What if Quest Diagnostics invested more resources in its compliance systems? • What if the training systems included lessons on the high costs of corporate fraud, both for the business and for the people that knowingly engage in white-collar crime? • David Smith may have been in a position to commit the fraud, he may have felt pressure, and he may have been able to rationalize his crime. The question remains: would better training have convinced him to act with more integrity? Consider the example of Walt Pavlo, a person who writes a popular column for Forbes online. In January 2001, a federal judge sentenced Walt Pavlo to 41 months in federal prison. The sentence followed Pavlo’s conviction for white-collar crimes that included money laundering, wire fraud, and obstruction of justice. Walt had worked hard to earn an engineering degree and an MBA. Those credentials led to a leadership position at MCI WorldCom, one of the world’s most valuable companies at the turn of the century. In his role as a finance manager, Walt described pressure he felt to report higher revenues than the company earned. The supervisors that oversaw his department wanted to boost WorldCom’s financial performance, likely with pressure from the top. When Walt saw that other leaders entered fraudulent transactions, he felt justified to create his own fraud to enrich himself. Ordinary people may not expect a multi-billion-dollar, global corporation like WorldCom to engage in fraud. Neither would they expect a family man with a professional education to exploit the fraud he discovered—then create his own scam. Members of our team have met and interacted with thousands of people that served time for white-collar crimes. Despite leading or working with companies that had compliance-training manuals, they did not get the message.   Human Stories of Noncompliance and Fraud: To make compliance a part of any corporate culture, leaders should include regular training that includes real-life stories. Those stories will help all team members appreciate the magnitude of problems that come with a government investigation. When leaders and team members grasp the severity of consequences, fewer people will participate in the type of behavior that can increase risk levels for businesses and organizations. As an added bonus, by investing in compliance training that works, businesses and individuals may qualify for leniency or mitigation in the event that investigators begin asking questions. It’s impossible to predict who might commit fraud within an organization. The vast majority of people that engage in white-collar crime do not have criminal histories. Yet as the theory of the fraud triangle suggests: • those people may be in a position to commit fraud; • they may feel pressure that induces them to participate in fraud; • they may rationalize their behavior for any number of reasons. Good training may lower risk levels for businesses and for individuals. Consider statements that our team at Compliance Mitigation found online:  According to Carnegie Mellon University’s report on Insider Fraud in Financial Services, employees working in accounting, operations, sales, upper management, customer service, purchasing, and finance commit 75% of all corporate fraud.  Employers frequently assume that people always act with integrity, even after being hired. Since businesses incentivize managers to focus on meeting targets and goals rather than detecting fraud, commitment to ongoing compliance training frequently suffers.  In a report that Intel published, Grand Theft Data, inside sources cause 42% of all company security breaches. Those security breaches can lead to government investigations and litigation, exposing businesses and individuals to enormous levels of stress.  Corporate fraud represents one of the government’s highest criminal priorities. The FBI estimates that white-collar crime costs Americans more than $300 billion annually. Those crimes run the gamut, from accounting schemes designed to deceive management, investors, auditors, and analysts about the true financial condition of a company, to cases involving fraud on the government and insurers, vendors, and clients.  Government agencies scrutinize telemarketers, brokers, crypto currency businesses, cannabis, financial services, and the healthcare field.  The FBI partners with numerous agencies to capitalize on their experience in specific areas such as securities, taxes, pensions, energy, and commodities. The Bureau has placed greater emphasis on investigating allegations of these frauds, and FBI agents frequently broaden their reach by partnering with other agencies, such as the:  Securities and Exchange Commission  Commodity Futures Trading Commission  Federal Trade Commission  Internal Revenue Service  Department of Labor  Federal Energy Regulatory Commission,  US Postal Service  Secret Service.  The Department of Homeland Security has its own independent mandate to criminally pursue fraud, financial crimes involving blackmail, contract fraud, grant fraud, money laundering, bribery, immigration fraud and program theft.   Government investigations are likely to increase as a result of COVID-19. The CARES Act, subjects companies to additional scrutiny by establishing three new oversight bodies:  (i) the Office of the Special Inspector General for Pandemic Recovery within the Treasury Department;  (ii) the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, consisting of the IGs for Departments of Defense, Education, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Justice, Labor and the Treasury, among others; and  (iii) the Congressional Oversight Commission.  In fact, dozens of cases have already been brought in connection with abuse of the Payroll Protection Program (PPP). The Value Proposition Building a compliance program will protect businesses, shareholders, communities, and individuals. On the surface, the investment may feel like a wasteful expense and hassle. Yet effective compliance programs represent an opportunity to both increase revenues and decrease risk for debilitating costs. They provide an excellent return with peace-of-mind. As an aside, they may pay for themselves in a variety of ways, including: • Eliminating fraud, waste, and theft of company assets • Creating a more inspiring corporate culture with transparency • Opening opportunities for increased efficiencies An effective program will improve internal communications and messaging with prospective customers. Good compliance metrics may also put a company in a good position for a deferred prosecution agreement (DPA), which may avoid total disruption. In these cases, the government brings an action but realizes it needs the assistance of the company itself in order to prove wrongdoing by the individuals involved. For example, federal prosecutors entered into Deferred Prosecution Agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries in 2019. The company agreed to settle matters by paying a fine and cooperating in with the government’s investigation of bribery. The DPA likely saved millions of dollars for shareholders and may have spared some people from going to prison. Maintaining compliance equips employees to do their jobs well, reach career goals, and keep customers happy. To paraphrase Warren Buffet: • It takes five years to grow a reputation, and five minutes to ruin it.   An integrated compliance program becomes a valuable corporate asset. Leverage the compliance training so that people can empower themselves to reach their highest potential. By showing everyone to act in accordance with corporate values, leaders protect the enterprise, the team members, and shareholder value.

THE NARRATIVE is an issues-oriented show that discusses, debates and at times exposes controversies and hot issues of the day. Today on THE NARRATIVE we talk to author of a new book, The Price of Panic: How the Tyranny of Experts Turned a Pandemic into a Catastrophe.Dr Jay Richards, along with biologist Douglas Axe and statistician William Briggs made a comprehensive assessment of the worst panic-induced disaster in history and concluded that the human cost of the emergency response to COVID-19 far outweigh the benefits. For the first time in history, the world shut itself down—by choice—all for fear of a virus, COVID-19. Government mandated closure of schools and tens of thousands of small businesses, cancelled Churches services and many other restrictions were imposed overnight.Dr Richards explains how the authors took a deep dive into the crucial questions to consider : What will be the total cost in lives, dollars, and livelihoods of this response from governments, relying on advice from Science? What role have national and global health organizations such as WHO played in this? To whom are they accountable? What evidence do they have for sounding the alarm? How did science bureaucrats, relying on murky data and speculative computer models, gain the power to shut down the global economy? How did politicians, who know nothing of the science, decide whom to trust? Relentlessly focused on what we know and don’t know about the coronavirus, the authors reveal what real experts can contribute when a pandemic strikes; what we need to know; what and how it happened, and how to keep it from ever happening again.Dr Jay Richards is the author of many books including the New York Times bestsellers Infiltrated (2013) and Indivisible (2012). He is also the author of Money, Greed, and God, winner of a 2010 Templeton Enterprise Award. Dr Richards is a Research Assistant Professor in the Busch School of Business at The Catholic University of America and a Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute. Dr Richards’ articles and essays have been published in The Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Washington Post, Forbes and a wide variety of other publications. His topics range from culture, economics, and public policy to natural science, technology, and the environment. He is also creator and executive producer of several documentaries and is an experienced lecturer and public speaker, appearing on several hundred radio and television programs, including Larry King Live (CNN), Huckabee, Dayside, Fox and Friends, Studio B with Shepard Smith (Fox News), Glenn Beck TV and many others. In January of 2020, research determined that individuals who follow the Mediterranean diet, intermittent fasting, or the Paleo diet will lose weight fairly quickly, “and reap profound health benefits – particularly ones pertaining to cellular vascular health.”It appears that of the three food intake patterns, the Mediterranean diet proved to be the most sustainable. Researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealandnote that the best diet is, “one that includes healthy foods and suits the individual.”New Zealand investigators followed 250 participants over twelve months, who either chose intermittent fasting (54%), Mediterranean diet (27%), or the Paleo diet (18%) to lose weight. It was determined that participants, who fasted, lost a little more than eight and a half pounds on average. Participants, who followed the Mediterranean diet, lost a little more than six and half pounds on average, while the median amount lost for those participants, who adhered to the Paleo diet, was just under four pounds.Of the three weight loss modes, the Paleo diet was the only diet that did not confer, “sizeable reductions in blood pressure and blood sugar levels.”The Mediterranean diet participants incorporated fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread and cereal, legumes, nuts, seeds, and olive oil – with reduced amounts of fish, chicken, eggs, and dairy. Red meat was limited to once a week or less. Paleo followers excluded dairy, grains, and legumes. However, the version of the diet employed in the study permitted one daily serving of legumes and one daily serving of grain-based foods. Other than those two modifications, participants were advised to consume plenty of fruits and vegetables, animal proteins, nuts, coconut products, and extra-virgin olive oil.As for intermittent fasting group, the female followers consumed no more than 500 calories on two selected days per week, while men were permitted to limit their calorie intake to 600 calories, alongside the same time period, as the female participants. At the study conclusion, “fifty-seven percent of participants kept on with the Mediterranean diet after 12 months, 54% continued to fast, and 35% remained on the Paleo diet.”Once again, the research demonstrates the powerful health-promoting benefits associated with the Mediterranean diet, especially the pescatarian or pesco-Mediterranean variation, with fish – salmon, anchovies, sardines and trout - as the principle meat source.

In January 2020 she started a new job at Splunk and was diagnosed with cancer a couple of weeks into her initial training. She spent much of the year in chemotherapy and recovering from the after effects of her treatment. Her bosses were totally supportive and gave her the time and space to recover. Brilliant bosses. Carolaine had other ideas. Nothing was going to stop her. Part time she has crushed her quota. 10 months into the year she is at 300% and to quote her, "The year isn't over". With all the usual pressures of life, and high rest requirement she only has about 2 hours per day of being at full energy levels. We explore how she has managed to come out of the starting gate and maintain her relentless pace with only 20-25% of the time available to healthy account executives. Her use of time blocking, prioritisation, her charm encourages massive discretionary effort from others, her massively high EQ and compassion, coordinating resources and drawing on Splunk's team have left her with a huge objective for next year ... 3x this year's quota. This episode of Flashback Friday was originally published on: May 1, 2012  Jason Hartman is joined on this episode by Greg Farrell, author of Crash of the Titans: Greed, Hubris, The Fall of Merrill Lynch, and the Near Collapse of Bank of America, for a discussion of the economic crash and the resulting bailouts, as well as some of the inside dealings with some of the major banks, such as the buyouts by Bank of America. Greg explains how these banks that participated in the buyouts grossly underestimated the depth of problems in their own banks and in those they acquired. Greg relates his research on Merrill Lynch’s attempt in the 1980s to become more like Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street banks, which was to their detriment because they lacked the expertise for such business practices, and became involved in and in the middle of many of the scandals of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Like CitiGroup, they were in over their head. Jason and Greg discuss Wall Street in general and then specific financial groups regarding the recklessness and risky businesses, funds, etc, that they entertained to give the impression of higher rates of returns. As the plot unfolded, large bonuses to CEOs and high-producing brokers came into play, which encouraged an all or nothing attitude toward the company and fostered a “me” attitude versus long-term stability of the company. Greg also talks about what he calls the “Charlotte Mafia,” the clash of company cultures. Greg Farrell is a correspondent for the Financial Times. In January 2009, he broke the news that Merrill Lynch had paid out its 2008 bonuses a month ahead of schedule, in December, even though Merrill was in the process of losing $28 billion for the year, and Bank of America needed an extra $20 billion in taxpayer funds to complete its acquisition of the firm. That story sparked an investigation by New York attorney general Andrew Cuomo. Greg is a past winner of the American Business Press’s Jesse Neal Award for investigative reporting and a recipient of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship for business journalism. He earned a BA from Harvard University and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University.

Once she reached her highest weight after having her son, she followed Weight Watchers with friends at work. With counting points, the weight came off easily, but was extremely difficult to maintain. By the winter of 2018, Maryanne shares, "I knew I needed to do something when I saw myself in our family's holiday 2018 pictures, but knew it had to be something different." She no longer desired to count points nor buy expensive diet food. In January of 2019, Maryanne found intermittent fasting from a friend who had lost weight by living an IF lifestyle. She told Maryanne about Delay, Don't Deny, and the DDD Facebook group. After some IF research, she began with 16:8, quickly moving to 20:4. Maryanne has gone from 153 pounds to 126 pounds. Her sinus inflammation and cystic acne are both gone. She sleeps better and is "loaded with energy." For her, the best thing about IF is the energy and freedom from having to decide to what to eat all day.The advice she'd give to new IFers: "Stick to clean fasting. Don't be afraid to test yourself to do longer fasts. Find a great network of people who support you."Get Gin’s books, including her latest New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. This has been an extraordinary year for the history books.  In January, President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial began. In China, a strange, new virus was spreading. By April, the coronavirus had infected more than 3 million people worldwide, schools had closed and New York City was using refrigerated trucks as morgues.  Then, on Memorial Day, George Floyd’s killing at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer ignited a summer of demonstrations for racial justice.  The months that followed saw wildfires, the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and an election like no other, with 60 million Americans voting early as COVID-19 cases surged yet again.   On Tuesday at 9 a.m., MPR News host Kerri Miller spoke to two historians about how 2020 will be remembered and how it compares to other tumultuous years in American history.  Guests: Leah Wright Rigueur is the Harry S. In January, Reynhard Sinaga was convicted of 159 sexual offences against 48 different men over the course of four trials. But according to police, there’s evidence he abused more than 200 men whilst living as a student in Manchester. He preyed on vulnerable young men, drugged them until they were unconscious and raped them while recording most of his abuse on his phone. Most of his victims woke up with no memory of what had been done to them - oblivious until the police turned up at their doors to explain the horrific truth. As police renew their efforts to identify more of Sinaga's victims, File on 4 has been given exclusive access to those at the centre of the police investigation and hears from many of those who knew him and who have never spoken before. The programme hears how how the softly spoken and highly intelligent student played Good Samaritan to lure victims to his flat in central Manchester - then plied them with drinks laced with the date rape drug GHB. How one man fought off Sinaga and called police, triggering the biggest rape inquiry in British history. The programme also hears about the moment the police realised they were dealing with a monster when they accessed his phone and discovered a catalogue of videos he'd made of himself abusing his unconscious victims. Police then painstakingly trawled through hours and hours of video and numerous trophies found in Sinaga's flat to help identify his victims. Having never shown any remorse for his crimes, the Court of Appeal is now reviewing Sinaga's sentence. So will he become the UK’s first non-homicide criminal to die behind bars? To create change in our lives we need to burn the boats and change 19 habits at once, right? Well, this may work for some —but for most of us, it's wishful thinking and leads to stress, complication and paralysis analysis. Enter Tiny Habits —using the simplest possible actions to create long-term enduring change. For example: Doing two push-ups instead of 40 Flossing one tooth instead of all of them Writing for 5 minutes instead of 45 minutes Strumming three chords instead of 5 songs And oddly enough —by implementing Tiny Habits, we actually create long term results that were previously unavailable with our prior model. Kim Sutton is a marketing and business automation mentor who focuses on helping small business owners get away from their businesses and back to the people and activities they love. She is also a mother of five kids, and someone who has worked to create a productive life through learning the power of knowing what to say Yes and No to. And it isn't easy. With major struggles from saying Yes too many times to everyone but herself, including in a marriage where she was marginalized and mistreated. Through those hardships, Kim has set course on a better path, which she shares openly and honestly in this episode. Key Points from the Episode with Kim Sutton: Kim is a mother of 5, including a set of twins Over the last 7 years, she’s had to figure out how to own her space and make room for both the personal and professional sides of her life This struggle has included some very dark lows and some great highs, which helps her help others create this balance and sustainability For Kim, she was overwhelmed by anxiety to the point of being constantly exhausted because she couldn’t sleep Despite being so tired, her anxiety just amped up further, making the problem worse and worse Kim does a lot of work with websites and online marketing, and she shared a good piece of advice Don’t focus on the numbers people tell you because numbers can be faked. You can tell what stories are real, so focus on the stories where you feel they’re right and real. Kim grew up with a strong sense of not being good enough, with one of her parents’ sides having means and the other not, so she saw the disparity and judgment She got her first job at 11, and always had a drive to have a job, support herself, and succeed Her mother threatened her not to attend her college graduation if Kim hadn’t secured a job before graduating Kim also felt the pressure from her first boyfriend, who she dated through college, and insisted on knowing where she was all the time, and made her move to New York after graduation She knew she needed to break up with him when she found out she was pregnant, so they got married and stayed together for 8 years They had moved to Ohio in that period, and she left him with two sons and no job or money The situation with the marriage was so bad before she left, with her husband taking her car keys and forcing Kim to walk their older son to school in the middle of Winter with sub-zero wind chill Kim took her kids, and got a job at Chipotle to make ends meet It was nothing like the kinds of jobs she had before, but she realized you have to suck it up and do what you have to do sometimes, regardless of what your pride or past tells you about it In that period, she met her current husband They continued to struggle as her husband lost his job, so Kim started a side business as a virtual assistant (VA) to help support the family This kicked off Kim’s struggle with how to say “No” to anyone she met or any request that came through Some people take advantage of this, when they know you’ll never turn them down, and others don’t realize you’re agreeing to things you don’t have the space to take on That struggle drove Kim’s anxiety but also is the teacher for what she’s gained in her self-understanding and realizing how to value herself She said, clearly, she does not want to “Oh well” life Kim had started lots of projects, but never finished any of them as she kept jumping to the next idea or request This is something she calls Chronic Idea Disorder, and is the basis of the book she’s working on Kim has had more than one struggle with extreme anxiety The first battle started with her first business in 2005 (which ended in 2010) She had a full time job at the time, and had to wake up at 5:30 each morning to work her 9-hour-a-day day-job, and then got home and worked on her online business until 3am She had a thyroid issue at the time, too, so the lack of sleep and stress made this worse In 2008, she checked herself into a mental health hospital, who never really dug into her sleep issues and just gave her medication In January 2015, she had her twins, and spent the next 18 months going 20-22 hours a day, non-stop It wasn’t just about the twins as her husband was very involved in their care, but largely driven by her work and her chasing of everything – the Facebook groups, the opportunities, etc And yet, there wasn’t enough money to make ends meet despite that hustle Rewinding a few years, her step-brother died, with it being an open investigation, but appearing to be suicide As an entrepreneur, he was stressed and overloaded and felt he couldn’t turn to anyone, and Kim feels that no one should be in this position So in 2016, finding herself in a similar place, she told her husband, who listened and was there for her to find help She was praying at one point, seeing monsters filling her mind, then seeing a bright white light and an angel wing appear, clearing the monsters out, and she had the best night’s sleep she could remember The next morning, she found something one of her kid’s made for her with an angel wing on her desk despite it being put away somewhere else That was such a clear sign to Kim from God that she had to say no, clear things away and sleep rather than continuing to break up or de-prioritize her sleep for everything else This is where her change came from, starting with sleep, and making more space by saying no to things like texting her clients over the weekend She realized over the course of a year, she only ate dinner with her family 10 times, including the 6 other birthdays in the house, which was a real wake up for her If we have needs, we need to let people know what we expect. This is our personal responsibility, or we should not expect to have what we want or need in life She mentioned a pivotal book in her life, Worthy, by Nancy Levin One thing she realized is that she felt she wasn’t worthy to spend money if she wasn’t the money maker in the family, which she says a lot of women feel in their marriage Kim reapplied many can also feel that when serving someone else in a client relationship, which leads to devaluing yourself There are so many ways we can give back to our community without giving away our 1-on-1 time She asked how long do we give ourselves to beat ourselves up after we’ve messed up? Or how long do we get down? What’s healthy here? It’s about taking responsibility for your life, making promises to yourself, but then keeping them This process has taught Kim personal responsibility and accountability Links: Website: TheKimSutton.com Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Pinterest YouTube Subscribe to The Do a Day Podcast Keep Growing with Do a Day Get Bryan's best-selling first book,Do a Day, which is the inspiration for this show and can help you overcome your greatest challenges and achieve in life. Ep 310 - The First Female Recession Guest: Chabeli Carrazana     More than 11 million women lost their jobs in North America between February and May 2020. Chabeli Carrazana explains, “The losses erased decades of job gains by women in the labour force.” She goes on to say, “About eight per cent of the women who lost their jobs stand zero chance of being called back to work.”   Heidi Shierholz, a senior economist and director of policy at the Economic Policy Institute, agrees. “There is a real possibility many jobs lost by women will never come back.”  It is a shocking loss of employment and representation of women in the labour market.    According to Carrazana, “In January, when unemployment in the US was just 3.6 percent – among the lowest recorded rates in the last 60 years – women were the majority of the workforce and within weeks, that all changed.” Carrazana reports, “In 1958, women made up less than a third of the labour force. It took 30 years to reach 45 percent, a pace of growth that ushered in the most significant change in labour markets in the past century.”    The job losses cross all sectors – less so in management but even there, women were more likely to cut back or lose their job. Carrazana says,  “The realities of the lopsided division of care inside homes has been on full display since the pandemic hit. Women in 2020 still take on the overwhelming majority of child care responsibilities.” And then child care facilities started to close – a double-hit. One in four women in child care lost their jobs and without child care, more women either had no choice or opted to stay at home to look after their children.   I invited Chabeli Carrazans of the 19th to join me for a Conversation That Matters about the devastating impact of COVID-19 on women and the employment realities that are crippling them professionally and financially today and for decades to come.   Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. His mother was a Jamaican preschool teacher and his father was a politician and welder. His father left the family when he was two years old. He attended the ‘Queen of All Saints Middle School’ where he excelled in English, won many awards,  and was given the nickname ‘Big.’ because of his weight, around the age of 10 (1982).  He started dealing drugs as early as 12 while his mother went out for work, and she says he adapted a ‘smart-ass’ attitude, while attending high school, but he was still a good student. He dropped out of school at 17 (1989) and gradually got involved in criminal activities. Shortly after dropping out, he was arrested on weapon charges and was sentenced for probation of five years. He was again arrested in 1990 for violating his probation and again a year later for drug dealing in North Carolina. He stayed in jail for nine months.   55.    Career: As a teen, he began exploring music and performed with local groups, such as ‘Techniques’ and ‘Old Gold Brothers.’ He made a casual demo tape titled ‘Microphone Murder’ under the name ‘Biggie Smalls.’ The name was inspired from his own stature as well as from a character of a 1975 film ‘Let’s Do it Again.’ The tape was promoted by Mister Cee, a New York based DJ and was heard by the editor of ‘The Source.’ In March 1992 (@19), he was featured in the ‘Unsigned Hype’ column of ‘The Source,’ magazine. Shortly thereafter, he was signed by ‘Uptown Records’. In 1993, when Sean 'Puffy' Combs, a producer/A&R with ‘Uptown Records’ was fired, Biggie Smalls signed with Combs’ ‘Bad Boy Records.’ In August, 1993 (@21), he had his first child T’yanna.  To financially support his daughter, he continued to deal drugs. Also in 1993, he worked on the remix of Mary J. Blige’s ‘Real Love.’ While working for ‘Real Love,’ he used the pseudonym ‘The Notorious B.I.G.,’ the name he used for the rest of his career. He followed up with another remix of Blige's ‘What’s the 411’. He debuted as a solo artist in the 1993 film ‘Who’s the Man?’ with the single ‘Party and Bullshit.’   56.    As a solo artist he hit the pop chart in August 1994 (@22) with ‘Juicy/Unbelievable.’ His debut album ‘Ready to Die’ was released in September, 1994, peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and was subject to critical acclaim and soon a commercial success. Three singles were released from the album: "Juicy", "Big Poppa", "One More Chance". "Big Poppa" was a hit on multiple charts, peaking at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and also being nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards.  At a time when West Coast hip hop was dominating the mainstream, this album became a huge success, making him a prominent figure in the East Coast hip hop scene. [Side Note: 2 months later in November, Tupac was shot five times in a NYC recording studio].  In July 1995 (@23), the cover of ‘The Source’ magazine featured him along with the caption ‘The King of New York Takes Over.’   57.    Recording of his second album, ‘Life After Death,’  began in September 1995 but was interrupted due to injuries, hip hop disputes, and legal squabbles (much like his friend Tupac). He was in a car accident which hospitalized him for three months. He had to complete rehabilitation and was confined to a wheelchair for a period. The car accident had shattered his left leg and made him dependent on a cane. He was arrested outside a nightclub in Manhattan in March, 1996 (24), for manhandling and threatening to kill two of his fans who were seeking autographs, and again in the middle of the year, he was arrested from his home at Teaneck, New Jersey, for possessing weapons and drugs. On September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur was shot in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he died six days later. Rumors of Biggie Smalls’ involvement in Shakur’s murder were doing the rounds and were reported immediately. In January 1997, he faced an order to pay 41k for a dispute that occurred in May 1995 where a concert promoter’s friend accused him and his entourage of beating him up.   58.    Death: In February 1997, he went to Los Angeles to promote his upcoming album ‘Life After Death’ which was scheduled for March 25th release. On March 7, 1997, he attended the 1997 ‘Soul Train Music Awards’ and presented an award to Toni Braxton. On March 8, he attended the after party at ‘Peterson Automotive Museum,’ hosted by ‘Quest Records’ and ‘Vibe’ magazine. While leaving the party, his truck stopped at a red light, and a black Chevy Impala pulled up alongside it. The Impala's driver, an unidentified African-American man dressed in a blue suit and bow tie, rolled down his window, drew a 9 mm blue-steel pistol, and fired at Wallace's car. Four bullets hit Wallace, and his entourage subsequently rushed him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where doctors performed emergency procedures, but he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. He was 24 years old.   59.    16 days after his murder, his double disc album ‘Life After Death’ was released. The album peaked at No. 1 spot on the U.S. charts, ultimately went 11× Platinum, was nominated for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Solo Performance for its first single "Hypnotize", and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for its second single "Mo Money Mo Problems" at the 1998 Grammy Awards. In 2012, the album was ranked at No. 476 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Biggie has been described as ‘the savior of East Coast hip hop’ by some and ‘greatest rapper of all time’ by others.   60.    Tupac and Biggie Best Frenemies: Biggie's first single, “Party and Bulls**t” came out in 1993. By that year, Tupac was already a platinum-selling artist, so Biggie asked a drug dealer to introduce him to Tupac at a Los Angeles party, according to the book 'Original Gangstas...' by Ben Westhoff. An intern who worked with Biggie recalled the meeting. “'Pac walks into the kitchen and starts cooking for us. He's in the kitchen cooking some steaks,”.  “We were drinking and smoking and all of a sudden ‘Pac was like, ‘Yo, come get it.’ And we go into the kitchen and he had steaks, and French fries, and bread, and Kool Aid and we just sittin’ there eating and drinking and laughing...that's truly where Big and ‘Pac’s friendship started.” There was mutual respect between the two and Biggie would crash on Tupac’s couch when he was in California and Tupac would always stop by Biggie’s neighborhood when he was in New York. In essence, they were like any other pair of friends and both of them respected the other's talent. At the 1993 Budweiser Superfest at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, they freestyled together. Biggie often turned to Tupac for advice in the business, and even asked him to manage his career. But Tupac advised him to, "stay with Puff. He will make you a star.”   61.    The first big fallout happened when they were scheduled to work on a project together for another rapper, Little Shawn. Tupac arrived at Times Square’s Quad Recording Studios on November 30, 1994, and was getting ready to head upstairs to where Biggie and Combs were. But instead, Tupac was gunned down in the lobby and shot five times. Tupac reportedly believed that Biggie had prior knowledge of the attack and that he also knew who was behind it. "He really thought when he got shot the first time, not that Big set it up or anything, just Big didn't tell him who did it," Tupac's friend and Naughty by Nature frontman Treach told MTV News in June 2010. "In his heart, he was like, 'The homie knows who did it.' Biggie might have wanted to just stay out of it, like, 'I don't know nothing.' [Tupac] was like, 'Yo, man, just put your ear to the street. Let me know who hit me up.'" Despite Tupac's claims, Biggie remained adamant that he had been loyal to his friend. "Honestly, I didn't have no problem with [Tupac]," Biggie previously said. "I saw situations and how sh*t was going, and I tried to school [Tupac]. I was there when he bought his first Rolex, but I wasn't in the position to be rolling like that. I think Tupac felt more comfortable with the dudes he was hanging with because they had just as much money as him."   62.    Still, Tupac's suspicions were only heightened when Biggie released "Who Shot Ya?" a month after Tupac's attack. Biggie claimed that he wrote the song "way before Tupac got shot," but the rapper took it as Biggie's confession. "Even if that song ain't about it, you should be, like, 'I'm not putting it out, 'cause he might think it's about him,'" Tupac said in an interview with Vibe while incarcerated for an unrelated charge.   63.    When Tupac joined Death Row Records, the East Coast-West Coast rivalry was cemented. While Tupac was incarcerated for another incident, he came to believe Biggie knew about the attack ahead of time. The west coast rapper reached out to Suge Knight, who offered him a place on his Death Row Records roster. Tupac accepted, cementing the rivalry between Knight's label and Combs’ Bad Boy Records. “Any artist out there that wanna be an artist, stay a star, and won’t have to worry about the executive producer trying to be all in the videos, all on the records, dancing—come to Death Row!” Knight proclaimed at that 1995 Source awards show.   64.    There was never proof that Biggie or Combs knew about the incident. But a couple of months later, Biggie’s B-side single was a track called “Who Shot Ya?” which led to Tupac’s response with the song, “Hit ‘Em Up.” In it, Tupac claimed he slept with Biggie’s wife, Faith Evans. According to Vibe, Evans denied the claim, saying, “That ain’t how I do business.”   65.    Open Comments:   66.    Question: What Notable deaths hit you pretty hard? Her father spent a considerable period in jail, vanished altogether in 1975, and only returned twenty years later. Her mother, a much respected actress in the local theatre, raised the children with the help  of her own mother and her mother-in-law. Erica spent a lot of time with these ladies while her mother was busy on the stage. Erica was born the eldest of 3. Although they were comparatively poor Erica never realized that because everything was neat and clean. Despite the absence of her father, she had a very happy childhood, surrounded by uncles, aunts, grandmothers and cousins. Her mother imbibed in her daughters a love for music, playing the songs of Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder to them. Erica inherited her mother’s artistic traits and a desire to perform. She would often sing in front of the mirror pretending that she was a background singer for Chaka Khan. She would also make her grandmother sit up and watch her while she sang, danced and acted. In 1975, Erica first appeared on stage, performing with her mother at Dallas Theatre Centre and by seven, she started learning to play the piano. Her favorite song was ‘The Greatest Love of All’. Another important aspect of her character was that from her childhood she loved to be in control of the situation around her. Therefore, when it was time for elementary schooling, she refused to continue her education there, mainly because she found that in school she was no longer in control. She began her formal education at a grade school, where her talent was quickly recognized. In her First Grade, she appeared in ‘Annie’, skipping and singing the song ‘Somebody Snitched On Me.’ During the summer vacations, she sang at the choir of the First Baptist Church, honing her choral skills.Along with acting and singing, little Erica also began to expand her cultural horizon, attending different festivals, especially Harambee Festival in South Dallas, slowly developing an interest in African culture and dress. The tall headgear she would wear one day originated from these visits.   113.    In 1980, she was enrolled in a dancing troupe. Later she also learned formal ballet. By 1982, she had also started rapping. When it was time to attend high school, she chose Dallas' Booker T. Washington High School, an arts-oriented magnet school. While studying there she rejected what she considered to be a slave name, changing the spelling of Erica to Erykah and replacing Wright with Badu. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at the Grambling State University, a historically black institution in Grambling, Louisiana, studying theatre until 1993. Thereafter, she returned to Dallas without completing her degree, mainly to concentrate on music.   114.    Career: In 1993, Erykah Badu started her career as a music teacher in Dallas. For a time, she also taught drama and dance at South Dallas Cultural Centre. To augment her income, she also served as waitress. She also formed a hip-hop duo with her cousin Robert Free Bradford, calling it ‘Erykah Free’. Very soon, they started going on musical tours and earning local opening slots. Her big chance came when in 1994 (@23), Erykah opened a show for D’Angelo. Through him, she caught the attention of Kedar Massenburg, an American record producer and founder of Kedar Entertainment. Impressed, he set her up to record a duet, ‘Your Precious Love' with D'Angelo. In 1995, she signed a contract with Kedar Entertainment and moved to Brooklyn. In January 1996, she made her debut with ‘On & On’, which remained at the number-one position on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for two weeks. In 1996, Erykah also recorded her debut album, ‘Baduizm’. Released on February 11, 1997 by Kedar Records, The Grammy award-winning album received universal acclaim from critics, who not only praised the musical style of the album, but also her ‘artistic vision’, establishing her position as the torchbearer of soul music. Her next album, ‘Live’ was a live album released on November 18, 1997, barely a month after the release of its lead single, ‘Tyrone’. It was also a huge hit and reached number four on the US Billboard 200 and number one on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. While ‘Live’ was being recorded Badu was pregnant with her first child. After its release, she took some time off to raise her child, not returning until 1999.   115.    Open Comments:   116.    Question: What is neo-soul and why don’t I like it?   117.    Movie Scene:Eve’s Bayou, Written and directed by Kasi Lemmons; produced by Caldecot Chubb and Samuel L. Jackson - Starring: Samuel L. Jackson (Louis Batiste), Jurnee Smollett (Eve Batiste), Lynn Whitfield (Roz Batiste), Debbi Morgan (Mozelle Batiste Delacroix), Vondie Curtis Hall (Julian Grayraven), Meagan Good (Cisely Batiste) and Diahann Carroll (Elzora).   118.    Review #1: “...As these images unfold, we are drawn into the same process Eve has gone through: We, too, are trying to understand what happened in that summer of 1962, when Eve's handsome, dashing father--a doctor and womanizer--took one chance too many. And we want to understand what happened late one night between the father and Eve's older sister, in a moment that was over before it began.   119.    We want to know because the film makes it perfectly possible that there is more than one explanation; "Eve's Bayou" studies the way that dangerous emotions can build up until something happens that no one is responsible for and that can never be taken back.   120.    All of these moments unfold in a film of astonishing maturity and confidence; "Eve's Bayou," one of the very best films of the year, is the debut of its writer and director, Kasi Lemmons. She sets her story in Southern Gothic country, in the bayous and old Louisiana traditions that Tennessee Williams might have been familiar with, but in tone and style she earns comparison with the family dramas of Ingmar Bergman. That Lemmons can make a film this good on the first try is like a rebuke to established filmmakers..."Eve's Bayou" resonates in the memory. It called me back for a second and third viewing. If it is not nominated for Academy Awards, then the academy is not paying attention. For the viewer, it is a reminder that sometimes films can venture into the realms of poetry and dreams. - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times   121.    Review #2: Kasi Lemmons’ fluid, feminine, African-American, Southern-gothic narrative covers a tremendous amount of emotional territory with the most graceful of steps. Young Jurnee Smollett plays 10-year-old Eve, struggling to understand the womanizing of her adored daddy (Samuel L. Jackson in easy, sexy command) and the passions of her big sister; Debbi Morgan, in a blazing performance, plays Eve’s vibrant aunt, infused with good-witch spiritual powers. The film’s dream-state visual elegance is matched by a great soundtrack. Grade, A-. -  Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly   122.    Review #3: First and best, it's got a rip-roaring story. It sweeps you along, borne effortlessly by believable if flawed characters, as it flows toward the inevitable tragedy. But it's also got a heart: It watches as a child harsh of judgment learns that judgment is too easy a posture for the world, and it's best to love with compassion. - Stephen Hunter, Washington Post   123.    Review #4: “You don't have to believe in magic to be gripped by the psychic forces that the characters' sorcery unleashes. Sibling rivalry, sexual jealousy and anxiety are all feelings that, when heated to the boiling point, have incendiary, semi magical powers. And as the psychosexual forces that bind but also threaten the Batiste family heat up, you can feel the lid about to blow. Every element of the film -- from the turbulent, stormy performances to the rich cinematography (which includes black-and-white computer-enhanced dream sequences) to the setting itself, in which the thick layers of hanging moss over muddy water seem to drip with sexual intrigue and secrecy -- merges to create an atmosphere of extraordinary erotic tension and anxiety.   124.    At the center of it all, exuding a dangerous magnetism, is Jackson's Louis, a swashbuckling, flashing-eyed, slightly oily lightning rod of a charmer whose charisma conveys a warning electric buzz. Jackson has never played a character quite this avid. And in a performance that requires him to infuse the role of perfect father and dream lover with a demonic charge, Jackson makes Louis at once irresistibly lovable and slightly terrifying. - Stephen Holden, New York Times   125.    Open Comments:   126.    Question: Are our family dynamics still suffering, internally, from the legacy of slavery or we closer to moving past it.   127.    TV Scene: “Miss Evers’ Boys”: Powerful, haunting and artfully mounted, “Miss Evers’ Boys” is a docudrama of uncommon quality and clarity. The acting is exceptional, the characters vivid, the presentation balanced. Original films for television rarely aim so high as does this HBO NYC production...And cinematographically, it is a revelation, with director of photography Donald M. Morgan lending the production a strikingly dingy, washed-out look that blends perfectly with the piece’s bleak sensibility. The story as told here centers on nurse Eunice Evers (a dynamic, layered performance from Alfre Woodard). Evers went to work at Alabama’s Tuskegee Hospital in 1932 to assist a certain Dr. Brodus (brilliant work from Joe Morton) in caring for poor black men (sharecroppers mostly) who have been stricken with syphilis. Enter Dr. Douglas (Craig Sheffer), a white doctor who brings with him a fully funded program to treat syphilis at the hospital, offering free treatment to any man who tests positive for the disease. A few months pass before Brodus travels to Washington to meet with Douglas and a government panel of doctors who tell him the funding for treatment has dried up. However, money is available for a study of the syphilitic African-American men. The catch: They can receive no medical treatment initially as a way to establish whether syphilis affects blacks and whites differently. Brodus initially is outraged, but acquiesces in the belief the study will disprove the racist notion of physiological inferiority in blacks. Evers also reluctantly follows along, lying to the men while giving them only vitamins, tonics and liniment rubs. But as the months turn into years, it becomes clear that the afflicted men will never receive treatment. Only with their deaths is the study of how the disease runs its course made complete and viable….[the movie] switches gears during its second hour to become an examination of Evers’ gut-wrenching moral ambiguity in sticking around to help perpetrate this ghastly fraud over 40 years. Woodard movingly conveys the conflict weighing down Evers’ guilt-riddled soul, giving a profound resonance to the disturbing ethical questions raised by her dedication in the name of lending the men comfort and a form of loving (if deliberately ineffectual) care….the overall tone and tenor of “Miss Evers’ Boys” is one of subtle brilliance, bolstered by an exquisitely detailed period sheen that screams excellence. After it’s over, you sit disbelieving that such an inhumane, insidious experiment designed to reduce black men to the level of laboratory animals could ever have been conducted in the United States of America — much less gone undetected until 25 years ago. It went far beyond mere institutional racism. It was pure evil. — Ray Richmond Vanity Fair   128.    Open Comments:   129.    Vote: Best/most important/favorite pop culture item from 1997?

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT JOHN HOPPIN: What's the Matter With Me? What's up? You are tuned into the What's the Matter With Me? Podcast. It's the real deal. This is it. I'm inside. I'm in the house. This is a new jam pumping. I made this, and put it on SoundCloud. It's called Run in the Wild. I can't run anywhere. I don't really have a business making a running song, but I did it anyway. And it's kind of pointless and meandering, but I made it to relieve stress. That's how I make this music, and it's kind of stressed out music. sound of a shopping mall Anyway, let's go into a shopping mall. Man, good to get out of that stressful music scene, and into the shopping mall. Remember going to the shopping mall? We can't do that, I guess, or we don't, or maybe people are going, who knows? I'm not going to the shopping mall, I'll tell you that, even though my doctor said I could maybe survive Coronavirus. Fundamentally, he's like, "You aren't at greater risk for hospitalization. In other words, maybe you'll survive." It's the season. Let's get spooky. Let's get spooky. spooky music plays Yeah. All right. Well, it's that time. In our family, no one's giving candy, really. It's a bummer. Halloween is a bummer for the kids, for sure. moaning ghoul Man, that guy was bummed. All those people, they're bummed out. Anyway, I have good and bad news. That's what this episode is all about. Things are good and bad. It's spooky, but it's good and bad. It's a mixed bag. A spooky mixed bag. Okay, so I've been trying to update this podcast and record a new episode every week. I just want to record more, but the reason why I couldn't record an episode is I have had a relapse of trigeminal neuralgia, again. They've performed surgery on me. They've been inside my cranium with micro machines, doing things twice now, and it came back again. In January is when I had my surgery, or February, my second surgery. And at that time, one of the hardest things was not being personally crushed during the relapse of trigeminal neuralgia, because of how much work I've put in to get away from it. And it's still here, shocking me. Thor's lightning bolt is shocking me in the face. spooky sounds Ooh, spooky, bad. I couldn't talk. I couldn't eat. I've eaten a liquid dinner for the last three nights. And then before that I couldn't eat anything. I didn't brush my teeth that night. Come on, I want to brush my teeth. Personally crushing. I got in touch with my doctor. I had a doctor's appointment yesterday, and the doctor said, "Hey, why don't you switch your medication? You're on the second line medication, really for no reason." So I did that. And the last time I felt any pain was five in the morning, this morning. And it was very slight, it was just a little, which is still a lot. It still hurt like these people. I felt like them. demonic laughter. I mean, that guy's laughing about it. I didn't feel like laughing about it. But anyhow, I went to the doctor, switched the medication, and that seems like it's doing the trick. And it's not the same as it was before the operation. It's lower. It's a three or a two, if before it was a 10. So the pain is different, but it's still just very intense. And it was crushing to have it come back, right? So that is the bad, but it is on a good foot. It's going somewhere. I ate oatmeal for breakfast. Last night, they had split pea soup. I wanted to have polenta and mushrooms. I think I could take down some polenta and mushrooms. My mom made shepherd's pie. And I ate it and it hurt pretty Bad, but it wasn't awful. And it tasted very good. Okay. So that is the bad stuff,
