Originally uploaded March 28th, re-edited April 16th. Jeffrey Mosher welcomed back LEO Director Susan Corbin with Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Recently , The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) joined local business and community leaders in Lansing to discuss how Gov. Whitmer's proposed FY26 budget will strengthen job training. Can you speak to expand apprenticeships and removed barriers to employment? Can you share more about the roundtable's highlights? [the direct impact these investments will have on Michigan workers and employers—including $19 million for Registered Apprenticeships, $40.4 million to support students with disabilities and $7.5 million to help workers overcome employment barriers.] Please share about Michigan's first-ever Statewide Workforce Plan? [ a strategy to fuel economic growth and create more opportunities for job seekers across the state.] If there's any more, discuss how these workforce initiatives align with the state's broader strategy to building a stronger middle class and help businesses grow? What would the real impact of these programs in action be? State officials and Lansing area leaders discuss how Gov. Whitmer's proposed FY26 budget will strengthen job training, apprenticeship programs and employment services. LANSING, Mich.— The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) joined local community members, business leaders and stakeholders to discuss Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's FY26 budget recommendations. The roundtable event, which was held Thursday at Capital Area Michigan Works!, focused on Registered Apprenticeships, Pre-Employment Transition Services and Barrier Removal and Employment Success – all programs aligned with the goals of Michigan's first-ever Statewide Workforce Plan to expand career opportunities, strengthen Michigan's workforce, and support employers. “Successful businesses and good-paying jobs strengthen our families and local communities,” said LEO Director Susan Corbin. “Governor Whitmer and LEO are investing in employment and training to equip workers with in-demand skills and businesses with the talent they need to thrive, creating more opportunities for Michiganders and a stronger economy.” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently released her seventh executive budget recommendation that will lower costs, power economic development, and build a brighter future to ensure any person or business can “Make It” in Michigan. The proposed budget includes $19 million to expand access to Registered Apprenticeships, $40.4 million (including a $8.4 million general fund investment to secure $32 million in matching federal funds) for Pre-Employment Transition Support and other vocational rehabilitation services for students with disabilities, and $7.5 million to remove barriers to work. "The stories shared by our local partners and employers highlight the real impact of these investments," said Stephanie Beckhorn, Director of LEO's Office of Employment and Training. "Governor Whitmer's budget recommendations will strengthen workforce development efforts across the state, expanding access to training, Registered Apprenticeships and employment services that empower Michiganders to secure good-paying jobs and build successful careers." Michigan provides employment services to more participants than any other state in the Midwest, is ranked #3 in the nation for helping adults get employed and is #4 in the nation for the number of active Registered Apprentices. LEO's Employment and Training programs are building a stronger Michigan by connecting job seekers to careers and helping businesses grow with the skilled talent they need. Through innovative programs, partnerships and targeted support services, LEO empowers individuals to gain in-demand skills while breaking down barriers to employment. These efforts fuel economic opportunity, ensuring Michigan's workforce is ready for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

And not just the Senate as a whole -- on Senate Democrats. The U.S. House approved a Continuing Resolution to keep the government funded past Friday. But will the Senate concur? Republicans in the Senate have quickly framed the messaging: it's up to Democrats to vote in support of the budget... or force a government shutdown.    Dept. of Education lays off nearly half their staff  Roughly half of the staff working at the U.S. Department of Education are in the process of being laid off today as President Trump continues his push for a complete elimination of the agency. The new Secretary of Education says the workforce reductions are the first step in the dismantling of the department. Inside Sources discusses the latest updates on the future of the DOE.    Immigration app to be replace by “self-deportation” app  During the Biden administration, migrants coming to the US could schedule appointments at points of entry through an app called CBP One. When President Trump took over, he quickly got rid of that feature. Now, the administration is set to release a new app – not for immigration, but for deportation. The new CBP Home app will launch with a new "self-deportation" feature.    Which executive orders do Utahns like the most?  Since re-entering office on January 20th, President Trump has signed 83 executive orders. Between that and hundreds of other executive actions, many in the country have voiced concerns about the executive branch doing too much. In Utah however, new polling shows that voters are more supportive of the President's actions than the rest of the country. What executive orders do Utahns like the most?    Box Elder County public officials facing charges of sexual exploitation of minors  On Inside Sources, we discuss the biggest political stories of the day. Sometimes, that means we discuss legal stories too. And sometimes, it means talking about some rather uncomfortable situations. One of the biggest stories in Utah right now deals with allegations and charges of sexual exploitation of minors and child pornography usage and dissemination between a judge in Box Elder County and the now former Tremonton Fire Chief. With KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas co-hosting today's show, Inside Sources talks through some of the more technical aspects of the cases.    On the Hill 2025: How are Utahns feeling about nuclear power?  One of the hot topics during this year's legislative general session was energy -- how can the state expand energy production? One method discussed was nuclear power. House Bill 249 set a kind of stage to explore the ins and outs of nuclear. The Inside Sources hosts dig into new polling data that shows just how Utahns feel about this potential energy source.    Fmr. Congresswoman Mia Love shares her “living wish” for America  Former Congresswoman Mia Love's battle with brain cancer is coming to an end; she's stopped responding to treatment. Now, she's writing her "living wish" -- what she hopes the country will do in the future. Yesterday, she penned an opinion piece in the Deseret News highlighting her finals hopes for America. Inside Sources discusses a few of the principles she focused on.    Local city councilman joins national committee to represent Utah  Utah is the 30th most populated state in the country. We're not the biggest, but our impact is pretty dang large. It's an exciting thing whenever our leaders take on larger roles in national politics, representing Utah to the rest of the country. Recently, Riverton City Councilman Andy Pierucci announced his appointment to the Community Leaders of America National Steering Committee.  He joins us today to chat about the group and what his presence on the committee means for Utah.

Rabbi Diana Gerson joins Dr. Sandie Morgan as the two discuss how faith-based communities can play a critical role in protecting children online and building a network of trusted community leaders. Rabbi Diana Gerson Rabbi Diana Gerson is the Associate Executive Vice President of the New York Board of Rabbis. She represents the organization at the United Nations and leads interfaith initiatives focused on child welfare, community resilience, and violence prevention. She is a member of the Child Dignity in a Digital World initiative and serves as Senior Advisor for Partnerships and External Relationships at the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities. She co-founded the Global Advocacy Hub for Children and Families and is the USA Country Coordinator for the Global Network of Religions for Children. In 2024, she was appointed to the UNHCR Multi-Religious Council of Leaders. Key Points Faith-based communities play a crucial but often overlooked role in child protection. Religious institutions, such as houses of worship and community centers, function as youth-serving organizations and must take responsibility for safeguarding children. Digital literacy is a fundamental skill for both children and adults. Many older generations struggle with technology, yet children are highly adept at navigating digital spaces, often without understanding the risks. Free apps are not truly free—when users don't pay with money, they pay with their personal data. Parents and faith leaders must educate themselves on the risks of digital platforms and the terms and conditions that affect privacy and safety. Child protection policies in faith-based institutions should match those of public schools, including background checks, training, and accountability measures for both staff and volunteers. There is no single "safe" place for children—every organization must have observable and interruptible spaces to ensure child safety. Parents must take an active role in monitoring these environments. Online exploitation is a growing crisis, fueled by the ease of image sharing on digital platforms. Faith-based organizations must recognize their responsibility in digital safety education and safeguarding measures. Many faith-based organizations lack proper protocols for reporting abuse. Instead of conducting internal investigations first, they must follow legal reporting requirements and ensure transparency. Faith leaders can be powerful advocates for online safety and child protection by integrating these issues into sermons and community discussions. These conversations should not be relegated to separate, optional trainings but rather be normalized as part of faith-based teaching. Partnering with faith-based organizations in digital literacy efforts is essential. Trainings should start with executive-level leaders and then expand to parents, staff, and youth members. Involving trusted religious leaders in digital safety initiatives can help overcome parental resistance. When faith leaders co-facilitate trainings, parents are more likely to trust and engage with the material. Normalizing discussions about technology and online risks is as crucial as past societal shifts in addressing domestic violence, child abuse, and public health issues like cancer. Faith leaders must lead by example in these conversations. Young people must be seen as part of the solution, not just future stakeholders. Engaging them in leadership roles and advocacy efforts empowers them to protect themselves and their peers.
