Narcissists are masters at creating a perception of perfection to the outside world so no one believes the victims. Dana Diaz was a victim who often felt hopeless during her childhood and as an adult. It made Dana feel stuck. And she felt dead inside as well. When she became physically ill as a result of the chronic stress of abuse, she felt a responsibility to create awareness about the effects of abuse on the mind and body. Educated in journalism and psychology from DePaul University, Dana Diaz's lifelong experience with abuse makes her an expert in the mental and physical struggles of victims and survivors alike. In her interview, she exposes the raw truth of emotional, psychological, and physical trauma and a bold testament of survival: INTERVIEW: Click here to buy Some cycles are hard to break. Forced out of an unhappy home at a young age, Dana S. Diaz swears to make it on her own and never fall victim to the same abuse she witnessed growing up. But that's before she falls for Darren. It doesn't take long, however, for Dana to meet the darker version of Darren—a narcissist who seeks to control Dana in every way. Despite her best efforts, she is caught in the cycle of trauma once again. But how can she free herself from Darren's stranglehold? In Gasping for Air, Dana invites readers along on her odyssey of healing and empowerment as she breaks free from the grasp of her 25-year-long abusive relationship. She fearlessly delves into old wounds to reveal the truth behind a lifetime of lies and stitches them closed as a new and resilient woman. An inspiring true story filled with strife and revelation, Gasping for Air exposes the raw truth of emotional, psychological, and physical trauma, and is a bold testament of survival.
In this weeks episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we are joined by Dana S Diaz as we dive deep into the topic of narcissism in the workplace, unpacking how it manifests, how to recognise it, and the strategies we can use to manage its impact. We start by discussing what narcissism looks like in a professional environment and what makes someone narcissistic. Often characterised by self-importance, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy, working with narcissistic leaders can be a challenge. Dana shares ways we can navigate the challenges of working with a narcissistic leader without being controlled by their demands, along with practical strategies for safeguarding and protecting yourself in a narcissistic work environment. Dana has experienced a lot of trauma and abuse in her life by narcissists. From a young age she dealt with it from her mother and step father and even later in life at the hands of her ex-husband. She spent so much time struggling with this form of physical, verbal, and psychological abuse that it made her question the reality she was living in. As she explains in her work, narcissistic abusers create so much confusion and conflict in the mind of the abused. She's struggled with this for much of her life and that is why her value of finding the truth is so important to her. Dana was super open to share her experiences and really examine them in an earnest way. We spent time trying to make sense of what leads someone to abuse someone in this way, how she grappled with her own self doubt, and even if she could/should have empathy for her abusers. Some of these questions are really hard to ask and even harder to answer. But if we want to understand the ugliness in our world, we need to examine it. I can't thank her enough for engaging in this type of discussion so that others can better understand their own situation. A more complete bio from Dana is below: Dana S.
