This week on the podcast, Lynne and Rachel chat with one of our digital heroes - Rebecca Lowrey Boyd. Rebecca is the digital managing editor of Better Homes and Gardens, Australia's leading homes website. She also founded Wee Birdy in 2007, a London-based blog devoted to London shopping and design, an innovative site in the heyday of blogging that we both loved. Rebecca talks about working on the digital side of a large media brand and the move towards omnimedia channels of print, digital and TV - and how the print and digital teams now work together. She talks about her love of digital strategy and how working inhouse helps her to be at the forefront of the big projects. We loved hearing about how analytics informs the type of content these sites include and how SEO and EDMs still play a big part in driving organic traffic to the Better Homes website. Rebecca talks about some of the tools she uses and how that helps to keep the site top of mind - and on the front page of Google. It's a far-ranging and thoughtful discussion on the future of digital media. Projekta noslēguma koncertā "Vasaras muzikālais tilts Rīga – Rostoka – Grāca" 30. jūlijā skanēs trīs virtuozi instrumentālie koncerti: Johana Nepomuka Hummeļa Koncerts trompetei Mibemolmažorā (solists - Kristofs Propsts (Austrija)), Kamila Sensānsa Pirmais koncerts čellam miminorā (soliste - Paula Prudlo (Vācija)) un Sergeja Prokofjeva Pirmais koncerts klavierēm Rebemolmažorā (solists - Daniils Mickevičs (Latvija)).

Marianne Halpern of Three Rivers Manufacturing (TRM) joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" on episode 240 of The Knife Junkie Podcast. TRM's parent company, Halpern Titanium, Inc. began selling supplies to custom knife makers from the Marianne's and Les' kitchen in 1997. Halpern Titanium bought a CNC in 1999 to machine knife scales for knife factories worldwide; 23 years later, Halpern has grown into a fully-fledged knife manufacturer. Three Rivers Manufacturing manufactures TRM and private label knives with waterjets, wire EDMs, Swiss lathes and numerous CNC machines and grinders of all types. Almost all TRM knives are constructed for easy changeability of handle scales. The company manufactures and sells scales in a multitude of colors and materials for most models. TRM's latest model called Shadow, is a larger locking version of their Nerd model and is built around their River-Lok, their take on the Axis Lock. Due to the more complex construction of the Shadow, changing scales is not as easy, so TRM offers changeable filler tabs for off-side milled clip pockets. You can find TRM online at www.threeriversmfg.com, on Instagram and on their private Facebook group. What are the basic steps to running a marketing campaign? In this podcast, we'll be going over the "8 Pillars of Successful Marketing Campaigns". These pillars have been identified across all of our case studies, and when put into practice, your gamification campaign is sure to be set up for success. As you know, every marketing campaign is unique- with different KPIs and objectives, and not all 8 pillars may be necessary for a campaign to be successful. That being said, studies have shown that incorporating these pillars ensures your campaign to be a win! Let's begin.1) Set goals beforehand/Have a Clear ObjectiveIs your branded advergame designed to educate customers on a new product or service? Is it meant to create hype around the brand? Is your goal to sell more units of a product or simply create awareness? Having clear, set goals helps give the campaign the direction that it needs.2) Know what success looks like through setting KPIsKPIs or Key Performance Indicators should be set before any marketing campaign to ensure that everyone will know what success looks like. Do you have set KPIs? Is it to get 5,000+ plays or 1 million? Is it to get social shares and go “viral” and if so how much? Are you aiming for customers to earn and redeem vouchers on a product? Having a realistic target to aim for helps you and your team focus all efforts on hitting your campaign goals.3) Confirm Promotional BudgetKnowing how much advertising spend you're willing to put into the promotional aspect of a Marketing Campaign is an important factor to consider. First, look at your organic reach across all social media channels and EDMS. Is your audience regularly engaged? Do they react to your posts, read and share your blogs? If so, you probably won't need to spend too much on promoting your game through ads, but we do recommend reserving 30% of the campaign budget for promotional content.4) Know your target audienceAge, gender, interests and location all matter when choosing an appropriate game. Some games have a user percentage that can be 85% male, while others are 70% female. Knowing who your audience is, allows for you to allocate the right kind of game in order to reach that demographic.5) Determine Incentives and Rewards6) Promotion across relevant mediums/Create relevant content7) In-store Gamification/EDMs8) Campaign Duration and Long-Term Sales effortsDid you like this podcast? Tell us what you think (good or bad). I'm pretty keen on getting better and hearing about what you want to hear about - Alex
I know most of you are more familiar with popular EDMs, such as David Guetta and Calvin Harris.I am uploading this to introduce to some funky house music.
While you might think your clients are hanging onto your every word on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, newsletters are a far superior way to stay in touch (and bring you more offers of work). In this episode, we touch on why newsletters work, platforms to create your newsletter on, lead magnets and more.
Sodick reduces setups for precision machinist. Berkshire-based Duckworth & Kent (Reading) Ltd has invested in its first Sodick wire erosion machine, a VL600Q model supplied by Sodi-Tech EDM. The new machine was purchased to advance wire erosion capabilities, reduce the number of set-ups, improve quality and repeatability and introduce unmanned overnight operations. With 52 years’ experience, Reading based Duckworth & Kent Ltd undertake everything from prototype and development projects through to small batch and full production machining. Sales Director Stuart Gleeson is the son of original co-founder David, who retired in 2000, his brother Terry, is the current Managing Director. Stuart says “Our speciality is low-volume, high-quality precision components, often manufactured from a variety of difficult materials with complex shapes that few others want to attempt.” The 15-employee business has relied on wire EDM for many years, particularly for the extremely high accuracy cutting of precision parts. However, when one of their three-wire EDMs recently required replacement, the company decided to evaluate a range of potential suppliers. Reviewing three-wire EDM machines, Stuart Gleeson and his team quickly settled on the Sodick VL600Q, which seemed ‘a natural fit with the type of work’ undertaken at the company. He says “Unlike other machines, the generator on the Sodick model featured state-of-the-art technology. In addition, we liked the rotary-axis, which would help with complex parts. We did some capability trials and promptly ordered the machine.” The Sodick VL600Q offers travel in the X, Y and Z axis of 600 x 400 x 270mm respectively, with 90 x 90mm U/V-axis travel. Stuart says “We’ve been putting the rotary axis to good use, for instance, it’s making light work of a lifting rod for the defence industry that is made from toughened steel. The rod features a series of diameters and squares that have to be concentric and straight to one another. There is also a thread and a yoke at the top for lifting. The rod is about 150mm long and we recently produced a batch of 58 in a single set-up. Previously, this part would have required two EDM operations, or one EDM operation followed by milling and/or grinding. Saving a set-up probably equates to a cycle time reduction of one hour per part. So that’s 58 hours saved on one job alone, plus the quality is better as we avoid picking up the component and re-setting.” Stuart Gleeson, who joined the business in 2001, knows a thing or two about the defence industry having been apprentice-trained with the MoD as a precision fitter. Another defence-related job at Duckworth & Kent involves the wire eroding of discs from exotic plate materials such as vanadium, tantalum and molybdenum. Measuring 50mm in diameter and 2mm thick, the plates are used as test samples. Stuart says “Such is the versatility of the Sodick machine that we have also used it to cut through assemblies intended for special-purpose machinery. These assemblies comprise a hard steel part featuring a titanium nitride coating, magnets and conductive adhesive. The Sodick cuts through the lot, wire finishing the entire face in one set-up. In fact, using the rotary axis allows us to hit more faces in one go, preventing inaccuracy through re-setting. Prior to installing the Sodick machine, this work required several set-ups per assembly.” Quality is clearly paramount at this forward-thinking engineering business, where tolerances are typically in the realm of 20-25 micrometres. The company is accredited to AS9100 and ISO 9001 (2008), as well the ISO 14001 (2004) environmental management standard. Other sectors served by the business include aerospace, motorsport, medical, personal care and food. Stuart says “For us, investing in the Sodick machine was not about saving time, it was about making parts right first time, every time. However, not only have we further improved our quality, accuracy and repeatability, the rotary axis means we now look at components in a different way. This has increased our capability and reduced set-ups. We will certainly look at Sodick again when our other two wire EDMs approach the end of their working life”

Laser Prototypes Europe, or LPE is a specialist in rapid prototyping and manufacturing. It has just purchased a V600QH from Sodi-Tech EDM to support the 3D printing of metal parts at the company. This new acquisition is already performing its tasks 50% faster than an existing Sodick machine that was installed in 2017. Belfast based Laser Prototypes Europe undertakes DMLS or direct metal laser sintering to print complex components in short cycle times to provide a huge competitve advantage for LPE and its customers. The DMLS process requires a lot of heat and energy to sinter the powder, which creates in-built stresses that can lead to distortion of the part. To counter this effect, heatsinks and anchors must be added to the component. After 3D printing, wire EDM is used as a finishing process to remove the heatsinks and anchors and achieve final tolerances. It is for this very process the company invested in the V600QH from Sodi-Tech EDM. LPE was established in 1991 by its current Managing Director Tom Walls. It was the first UK company to install an EOS rapid prototyping system and it has continued to invest in the latest technologies and materials. This enables the company to provide a complete metal sintering service, in-house metallurgy, stress relieving, wire EDM, bead blasting and five-axis machining. “Additive Manufacturing presents a unique problem for EDM: the density and shape of the support structure makes DMLS parts very difficult to wire without continuous wire breakages. In addition, there are lattice type structures within the parts, and sometimes powder can be found in pockets, all of which add to the challenge. Unfortunately, wire breakages occur fairly frequently. Tom Walls says "For this reason, we need wire EDM machines with quick re-threading and re-positioning, which is why we use Sodick.” LPE installed its first Sodick wire EDM in 2017, an AQ537L model. While this machine has performed well, such has been the company’s growth trajectory that wire EDM became a bottleneck. Tom Walls says “We also thought it was a risk to continue running with just one wire EDM. The machine hasn’t missed a beat, but if anything, unforeseen was to happen, it would have a major impact on lead times. So, to both increase capacity and mitigate risk, we decided to invest in a second Sodick. The reliability of our first machine has been such that there was never any chance we would look elsewhere.” The high resolution (down to 0.015mm) and production standard resolution (0.06mm) can be offered to cater for different customer demands and due to LPE’s focus on quality. All DMLS parts are subjected to stress relieving before making their way to the Sodick wire EDMs. Referring to the latest addition, Tom Walls says: “The way the wire is driven has been improved, delivering better control if it thinks it might break. Also, if the wire does break, it is much faster at re-threading and getting back to its cut position, which contributes to higher productivity. Performing wire EDM on a row of 20 DMLS parts would previously take around 4 hours, but we can complete them in half that time using the V600QH. Both the machine interface and software are also better.” Installed in late July 2019, the Sodick VL600QH wire EDM with linear motor technology has the capability to accommodate tall workpieces thanks to 500mm of travel in the Z axis. LPE, which is both ISO:9001 and ISO:13485 registered, estimates it will grow by a further 10-15% this year as demand for metal additive manufacturing continues to ramp up. Tom Walls concludes by saying “There are many factors that set us apart from our competitors. For instance, all customers receive a rapid quote, a dedicated project team and ongoing support and advice from a designated sales contact. Moreover, our knowledge is second to none, which is why we are continuing our research with universities and industry, and currently support four PhD students and four post-doctoral students with their research in advanced process control and powder development for metal laser sintering.”
Did you know there’s a secret sauce that you must apply if you want your marketing efforts to help your business shine like the diamond she is?
