Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has appointed a veteran aide Hussein al-Sheikh as vice president. The move came a week after the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan outlawed the Muslim Brotherhood, which it says threatened its regime. Dr. Ronnie Shaked, Dr. Ronnie Shaked, an expert on Palestinian Affairs at the Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said that Al-Sheikh was just as corrupt and despised as Abbas and would not likely succeed him. He told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan, that the move by Jordan’s King Abdullah the Second to outlaw the Muslim Brotherhood was a move to bolster Jordanian identity and likely a temporary ban. The fascinating, true account of the quest for one of the Old Testament's most infamous cities. Like many modern-day Christians, Dr. Steven Collins struggled with what seemed to be a clash between his belief in the Bible and the research regarding ancient history - a crisis of faith that inspired him to put both his education and the Bible to the test by embarking on an expedition that has led to one of the most exciting finds in recent archaeology. Recounting Dr. Collins's quest for Sodom in absorbing detail, this adventure-cum-memoir reflects the tensions that define Biblical archaeology as it narrates a tale of discovery. The audiobook follows Dr. Collins as he tracks down Biblical, archaeological, and geological clues to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, narrowing down the list of possible sites as he weighs evidence and battles skeptics. Finally, he arrives at a single location that looms as the only option: a massive site called Tall el-Hammam in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Challenging the assumptions of academics around the world, Discovering the City of Sodom may well inspire a revision of the history books. Dr. Collins has become a new voice in the controversy over using the Bible as a credible source of understanding the past - and opened a new chapter in the struggle over the soul of Biblical archaeology.Steven Collins, PhD, is among the world's foremost biblical archaeologists. He is Director of theSchool of Archaeology at Veritas International University and serves as Consulting ResearchProfessor in the College of Archaeology, Trinity Southwest University. He is Director and ChiefArchaeologist of the Tall el-Hammam excavations in Jordan, completing 16 seasons. Prior to Tallel-Hammam, Dr. Collins excavated at other sites in Israel and Palestine.A prolific writer, he has produced articles in professional journals and magazines (including BiblicalArchaeology Review) and many books, including Discovering the City of Sodom (Simon & Schuster2013) and the Harvest Handbook of Bible Lands (a Gold Medallion finalist; Harvest HousePublishers, 2019) for which he is co-editor and a principal author. A professional member of ASORand a board member of NEAS, Dr Collins is a much sought-after conference speaker/teacher and is featured in numerous documentary films by the National Geographic Society, the Discovery, History, and Travel Channels, as well as independent films.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/earth-ancients--2790919/support.

For decades, American policymakers have come to view the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan as an indispensable ally in the Middle East, committing billions of taxpayer dollars to support Jordan's budget, economy, and military. Indeed, Jordan's Peace Treaty with Israel; its strategic position between Israel, Iraq, Syria, and Saudi Arabia; and its pro-American military and intelligence services remain critical to U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. And yet, challenges inside this relationship are reaching alarming levels. From harboring one of the FBI's most wanted terrorists and inciting violence against Israel, to a member of its parliament facing charges for trafficking guns and gold into Israel, Jordan's recent behavior has U.S. policymakers considering their options. Filling in for host Cliff May is Rich Goldberg, senior advisor at FDD. To discuss U.S.-Jordan relations, he's joined by FDD Senior Vice President for Research Jonathan Schanzer and Joe Truzman, research analyst at FDD's Long War Journal.

But the Hashemite Kingdom has to contend with a Palestinian majority, cells of Jihadi groups, a vocal opposition to the economic policies of King Abdullah II, and security problems in nearby southern Syria. Israel has excellent working relations between its military and intelligence agencies and their Jordanian ones, and it has done its share to alleviate the chronic water problem from which arid Jordan suffers, but there is constant fear west of the river that the Hashemite dynasty is just one bullet away from being toppled - leaving Israel vulnerable along its backbone. Can Israel bank on the East Bank to remain quiet? Panel: - Jonathan Hessen, Host. - Amir Oren, Editor at Large, Host of Watchmen Talk and Powers in Play. - Dr. Joshua Krasna, Lecturer on intelligence and Mideast security at NYU and Research Fellow at Moshe Dayan Center of Tel Aviv University. - Col. (Res.) Reuven Ben-Shalom, TV7 Powers-in-Play Panelist, Cross-Cultural Strategist and Associate at ICT, Reichman University. Israel has two major maritime fronts, as well as secondary-ones (such as) the Sea of Galilee - which used to border Syria- and the Dead Sea, which Israel shares with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. However, the two main bodies of water of concern to Israel are of course the Mediterranean and the Red Sea and its southern approaches, all the way to Bab-el-Mandeb and beyond. Ben Caspit speaks this week with former ambassador Dr. Haim Koren. The former envoy to Egypt and South Sudan says that all Israeli governments, including the new government under the leadership of Naftali Bennett, have been and are interested in preserving and developing strategic relations with Jordan. "I expect that doubling the quantity of water [annually sold by Israel to Jordan] would be the first step in strengthening these relations." Koren adds the Palestinian issue is important for improving relations with the Hashemite Kingdom, and that King Abdullah intends to raise the issue in his upcoming meeting with President Joe Biden on July 19. Koren notes that even before the Abraham Accords, the Arab world was signaling to Israel that any advancement on the 2003 Saudi/Arab Peace Initiative should facilitate advancing other regional issues. The alleged coup attempt in Jordan last month briefly placed the Hashemite Kingdom at the forefront of the news. The crisis passed but it raised a host of questions about a country that usually attracts little attention: How vital is the monarchy to the country’s stability? How vital is Jordan’s stability to the region? After the Abraham Accords, what is Jordan’s role in diplomacy? What happens to Jordan if Israel diminishes its role in Jerusalem?

For the second time in Israel's seemingly interminable election cycle, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has deployed the possibility of Jordan Valley annexation as way to rally support — even if Israel's security and relationship with the neighboring Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan suffer because of it. All the while, the United States appears more deferential on annexation than ever before. Will Bibi really exploit this so-called "historic opportunity?" How will the Jordanians and Palestinians react? And will the Trump administration give the Israelis the coveted green light on formally absorbing the Jordan Valley? Hosts Evan Gottesman and Margaux Nijkerk explore these questions with Ofer Zalzberg, senior analyst in the International Crisis Group's Arab-Israel Project.Support the show (http://support.israelpolicyforum.org/donate)
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which is almost landlocked and has a demographic majority of citizens of Palestinian origin, has traditionally being considered one of the more fragile of the Arab countries, yet in recent years, it has been surprisingly resilient while its neighbors succumbed to domestic and regional turmoil. It is important to note that the security and stability of Jordan is closely linked to peace with its Western neighbor, the State of Israel. Nestled in the heart of the Middle East, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has played a pivotal role in the struggle for peace in the region. While neighboring Syria, Israel, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia have attracted an array of headlines—from sectarian disputes to proxy wars and social media revolutions—Jordan has not gone unscathed from the tensions surrounding it. Terrorist networks, the bordering Israel-Palestine conflict, and the Syrian civil war have burdened the country's borders, resources, and security. Notably, it has become central to hosting Syrian refugees, with the Zaatari camp now Jordan's fourth largest city. Yet, despite nearby turmoil, the Hashemite Kingdom continues to engage in strategic partnerships with adjoining countries and maintain strong relations with the United States. Jordanian journalist Rana F. Sweis portrays the intricacies and complexities of life in Jordan and the Middle East.
During the course of our journey through the royal Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan we recorded the likes of Petra, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Wadi Rum. We saw ancient Roman cities and citadels. But nothing confounded us as much as the ancient riddle, “What’s a souk?”

Dr Katie A. Paul discusses work by the Antiquities Coalition to bring together the international community to protect heritage. Work completed so far includes policy recommendations, information tools, conferences, and the building of a Task Force. Since the 2011 Arab Spring, throughout the Middle East and North Africa, heritage is increasingly being used as terrorist financing tool and weapon of war. Some of the world’s most iconic ancient sites and masterpieces have now been lost to armed conflict, targeted destruction, and organized plunder. While the crisis seems overwhelming, the world is fighting back. This September in Amman, 17 MENA nations will come together at the Second Annual #CultureUnderThreat Conference, hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. This ministerial summit is part of a continuing global initiative launched by the Antiquities Coalition, a nongovernmental organization based in Washington, DC. Since its creation in 2014, the Antiquities Coalition has worked to build the political will needed to fight cultural racketeering, while supporting actions by policymakers, governments, and art market players working to achieve this same goal. This presentation will review the Antiquities Coalition’s #CultureUnderThreat programs, including its ministerial summits in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as an international experts’ task force to develop solutions to the ongoing crisis, and efforts to raise awareness of cultural racketeering in the region and beyond

Curt and Face2Face host David Peck talk about Syrians as newcomers to Canada, mentorship, giving back and about Syrians helping Syrians. For more information about QuestScope go here. Biography Curt Rhodes has spent over 30 years working with, and on behalf of, marginalized communities and young people across the Middle East. As the recipient of the 2014 Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award, Dr. Rhodes was recognized by Tufts University for his demonstrated compassion and tenacity in creating a highly effective and determined organization dedicated to the survival and nurturing of the most vulnerable and disenfranchised. In recognition of his work through Questscope with marginalized youth in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and in the region, Dr. Rhodes was awarded 2011 Social Entrepreneur of the Year for the Middle East and North Africa by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. Dr. Rhodes began his career in the Middle East in the early Eighties, as Assistant Dean in the School of Public Health at the American University of Beirut. During the 1982 invasion of (west) Beirut, he volunteered in a community-based clinic alongside students and friends, doing around-the-clock triage for wounded and ill civilians. That was when the seed idea for Questscope began to take shape. Living and working with people in great suffering compelled him to find a way that he and others in the Middle East could assist the most vulnerable: participating with the voiceless ones in invisible communities. In 1988, Questscope was founded with the goal of putting the last, first. From the beginning, Questscope worked closely with local communities, identifying their aspirations and together addressing their greatest needs. ---------- For more information about my podcasting, writing and public speaking please visit my site here. The Annual Harrell-Bond Lecture, given by Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal on 5 November 2014 at the University of Oxford Examination Schools. The communities comprising the modern Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have a long history as refugee hosts. Currently, 20 per cent of the residents of Jordan are refugees and asylum seekers from all over the world. Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal examines the ways in which earlier refugee communities' experience of displacement itself contributed to their integration within the developing Jordanian state. Princess Basma discusses the ways in which Jordan's Circassian, Chechen and Armenian communities have negotiated different aspects of their specific identities and integrated in Jordan, considering the role of forced migration itself in creating identities. Jordan's own experience demonstrates how policies that engage and include refugee communities can have positive outcomes for both sides, creating peaceful and productive coexistence.

In his presentation, Amb. Dore Gold discusses the three main undercurrents of the fight for Jerusalem. The first is the positive undercurrent of Israel's legal rights to Jerusalem, specifically after the War of Independence in 1948 and the Six Day War in 1967. The first war liberated Jerusalem from the hostilities that were occurring from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Six Day War recaptured the Old City and unified Jerusalem. In terms of international rights, Amb. Gold discusses Resolution 242 which does not call for full Israeli withdrawal or restoration of the pre-war situation. The international community recognized that returning to a pre-war Jerusalem was not ideal as Jerusalem had been illegally seized by Jordan and there was a lack of religious freedom.
