This week, Da7e and Neil are time-hopping through the origins of John Stewart and his complicated path toward Green Lantern candidacy. In The Calm [04:58], they assess the show's levels of wokeness. And with the help of numerous emails from listeners, they continue to theorize about the Lanterns rings and the "imperfect system" of choosing candidates. Then in The Storm [52:20], they attempt to predict how the rest of the season will be paced and whether there is a classic Damon Lindelof show narrative pivot right around the corner.Next week, Lanterns returns with a fourth episode that gets back to the conversation with Hal and Sinestro and maybe, just maybe, brings in some big action beats. To interact with the show, send your comments and questions to stormofspoilers@gmail.com, and follow us on Twitter/X and Bluesky @Da7eandNeil.You can also support Da7e and Neil and get all kinds of bonus content (from the Game of Thrones era to the LOST rewatch to our Twin Peaks rewatch project to our current Adventure Pod and Dark watch project) by subscribing to our Patreon here: patreon.com/Da7eandNeil

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Wolf Week continues as Sidey, Dan and new dad Jamie sink their teeth into Martin Scorsese's riotous financial crime epic The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau and Joanna Lumley. With Reegs absent and therefore no proper intro to keep things vaguely professional, the dads begin by catching up on what they've been watching. Dan has largely swapped screen time for Cold War spy histories while his wife is away in the Czech Republic for the summer, Jamie has returned to the comforting embrace of Blue Bloods, No Offence and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and Sidey has endured Jason Statham's Mutiny, a revenge-on-a-boat action thriller with suspiciously Die Hard-adjacent poster energy. The Top 5 this week is Wolves, which naturally sends the conversation roaming all over the cultural wilderness. There's Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction, Moro from Princess Mononoke, Teen Wolf and the obvious sporting advantage of being Michael J. Fox with werewolf powers, plus Shrek's Big Bad Wolf and a detour through wolf-related music from Warren Zevon, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Duran Duran, Howlin' Wolf, Steppenwolf, Los Lobos, Wolfmother and Wolf Alice. Liam Neeson's miserable survival odds in The Grey get a mention, as do Bad Wolf and Rose Tyler from Doctor Who, Jack Nicholson in Wolf, Remus Lupin, Dances with Wolves, Portia Crystal from Sing 2, Lupine Howl, the direwolves from Game of Thrones, How Wolves Change Rivers, Rainier Wolfcastle and Oz from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Then it's on to The Wolf of Wall Street, a film the dads note is arriving neatly alongside Jersey's current Martin Scorsese cinema season. They follow Jordan Belfort from his first day as Wall Street pond scum through Matthew McConaughey's career-rescuing lunch scene of coke, booze,chest-thumping and “rookie numbers”, before Black Monday promptly ends any chance of a respectable finance career. From there it's penny stocks, Spike Jonze, 50% commissions and the arrival of Donnie Azoff, whose cousin-wife logic, blinding white teeth and crack-pipe networking help turn Stratton Oakmont into a full-blown fraud machine. Along the way, the dads dig into the film's most notorious moments: the “sell me this pen” lesson, motivational speeches, middle fingers to clients, dwarf tossing, strippers, head shaving, Rob Reiner as Belfort's furious father, Margot Robbie's Naomi making her entrance, Donnie's appalling first impression, the famous 11-second romance, Vegas excess, penicillin shots and a superyacht wedding present. They also cover Kyle Chandler's FBI agent Patrick Denham closing in, Jon Favreau's lawyer trying desperately to make Jordan stop, the Steve Madden IPO, hidden stock ownership, Joanna Lumley's Aunt Emma and the Swiss bank account, plus Jordan's spectacularly arrogant attempt to bribe the FBI with lobster, prostitutes and absolutely no self-awareness. The review also takes in the yacht storm and Italian rescue, the infamous Lemmon Quaaludes sequence with crawling, ham-choking and the destroyed Lamborghini reveal, Jordan wearing a wire while warning Donnie not to incriminate himself, and the ugly final collapse as Naomi demands a divorce, Jordan turns violent and everything finally crashes. By the end, the dads are left wrestling with prison, sales seminars and the uncomfortable question of whether the film really works as a cautionary tale, or whether it is simply too entertaining for its own good. Verdicts are strong across the board. Sidey recommends it, while still insisting it is far too long. Dan also gives it a strong recommend, particularly for the endlessly quotable scenes, and Jamie calls it a must-watch — although preferably consumed as three one-hour chunks rather than one enormous sitting. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. We'll break down the immediate aftermath of Season 2's climax, the current strategies of Team Black and Team Green, and what to expect from the rest of the season. Gustav Danielsson, FSF got the job by text message. "Do you wanna shoot a sequel to Game of Thrones?" arrived from director Owen Harris, who had made San Junipero with him, and it landed while Danielsson was at home rewatching the original series with his kids and buying them the board games. He cut short a show in Sweden to take it. The result, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is HBO's return to Westeros at a fraction of the usual scale, and it earned him a 2026 Emmy nomination for cinematography. He and host Jared Levy work through how you make a two-hander feel as large as a war on a budget that rules out burning cities. Night scenes pushed into the half hour of real dusk, the same trick he used on San Junipero because South African nights go completely black. An Alexa Mini LF shot at 3:2 and squeezed to 2:1 on Panavision Ultra Panatars, whose 1.3x squeeze fills almost the whole sensor, with faster Panavision VA spherical primes held back for the scenes a single double-wick candle had to carry on its own. Every flashback on one de-tuned Panavision T Series lens built for Super 35 and run on a larger sensor, so the image falls apart at the edges on purpose. Firelight from a bank of up to 48 photo flood bulbs that gaffer Seamus Lynch built and named the Dalek, programmed against video of a real fire. And the afternoon an oven on set caught fire for real, which Danielsson spent a few seconds trying to dim.CREDITSGustav Danielsson, FSFInstagram · Website · IMDbJared Levy, hostInstagram · Website · IMDbDavid Kruta, producerInstagram · Website · IMDbTopher Hammond, producerInstagramMUSICOriginal music by One Wave.THE SALONEpisode page and full gallery: https://cinematographysalon.com/podcast/gustav-danielsson-fsf-a-knight-of-the-seven-kingdomsNewsletter and events: cinematographysalon.comInstagram: @cinematographysalonPRESENTING SPONSORThis episode is made possible by Fujifilm — home of GFX ETERNA 55, the large format, IMAX®-Certified digital camera, and FUJINON cinema lenses. https://fujifilm-x.comSUPPORT THE SALONThe podcast, the writing, and both Resources tools are free. This week, Da7e and Neil have been pulled out of Westeros in a green bubble and asked whether they are afraid of a new Damon Lindelof show. The answer? Absolutely not.In The Calm [05:10], they break down the pilot episode of Lanterns and highlight its many influences, from True Detective vibes to Fargo vibes to a promise of cosmic shenanigans. They also check in on some familiar tropes like Bad Dads, Time-hopping Mysteries, and Mythology Deconstructions. Then in The Storm [48:04], your faithful hosts use their knowledge of the comics, the "Weeks Ahead" trailer, and lack of screener access to lay down some theories about where this story will go, including the very important questions around why the show is specifically and simply called "Lanterns" (with no color-based qualifier).Next week, the Lanterns journey continues with episode two of eight. Will there be aliens? Probably. But more importantly, there will be more Garrett Dillahunt.

He reveals the secrets of his working relationship with Mark, and we join them as they travel to their place of work, a film studio in Belgium, where they discuss which character they are going to murder that day - and how the crime will be committed. Clue: it involves a box of chocolates. When it comes to murder mysteries, Mark has form. He is the co-creator of the hit TV series Sherlock, where he plays Holmes' brother Mycroft. He has also starred in Game of Thrones, Dr Who and cult comedy series The League of Gentlemen, which he also co-wrote. House of the Dragon Season 3 Review | An EPIC But Flawed Season

    Super Hero Homies!

House of the Dragon Season 3 has come to an end! After an uneven second season, did Season 3 bring the Dance of the Dragons back to its former glory? In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we give our full spoiler-filled House of the Dragon Season 3 review, breaking down the second half of the season, the epic finale, Battle of Tumbleton, Rhaenyra's transformation, Sheepstealer, Rhaena, Ormund Hightower, and our biggest theories for House of the Dragon Season 4. But first, we've got a 20-minute cold open! COLD OPEN: FIRST 20 MINUTES We begin with a debate about comic book movie adaptations and how closely movies should follow their source material. Why can Spider-Man: Brand New Day drastically differ from its comic book namesake without receiving much criticism, while Supergirl was heavily criticized for changing elements of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow? Is faithfulness to the source material actually important, or does it depend on expectations? Nobody necessarily expected Spider-Man: Brand New Day to directly adapt the comics, while Supergirl was marketed as an adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow. We discuss whether expectations, rather than comic book accuracy itself, are what ultimately shape fan reactions. ICE CREAM MAN MOVIE We then discuss Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man horror movie... and we're already worried without even seeing it. We're big fans of the Ice Cream Man comics and praise their creativity, disturbing horror, mystery, thought-provoking storytelling, and incredibly unique premise. Unfortunately, we think the movie appears to be stripping away much of what makes the comic special in favor of something far more generic. We discuss why the adaptation feels disconnected from its source material and why we're skeptical of Eli Roth's approach. HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SEASON 3 After the cold open, we return to Westeros for our full discussion of House of the Dragon Season 3 Episodes 5-8. We previously reviewed Episodes 1-4, and now it's time to determine whether Season 3 stuck the landing. FULL HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SPOILERS! We discuss: • The Battle of Tumbleton and the finale's incredible action • Rhaenyra's increasingly dark transformation • Rhaena and Sheepstealer • Ormund Hightower emerging as a wonderfully conniving villain • The Dance of the Dragons • The season's biggest twists and surprises • Character motivations and development • The uneven pacing • Underdeveloped supporting characters • Our favorite and least favorite moments • Where the story goes in Season 4 • Who survives the coming war The action throughout Season 3 is spectacular, and the Battle of Tumbleton gives us some of the epic dragon warfare we've been waiting to see. We also loved watching Rhaenyra's heel turn continue as the war changes her, while characters such as Ormund Hightower brought some much-needed personality and scheming to the conflict. But we have one MAJOR problem with the series: Who are we supposed to root for? We love morally complex characters. Game of Thrones built its reputation on complicated, flawed people. But morally gray doesn't have to mean emotionally distant. At this point, we're struggling to find a main character we genuinely want to rally behind. The spectacle is incredible, but without characters we're emotionally invested in, some of the biggest moments don't hit as hard as they should. Despite those criticisms, we still enjoyed House of the Dragon Season 3 and believe it's an improvement over Season 2. Now we're looking ahead and hoping the series can bring the Dance of the Dragons to a satisfying conclusion. JOIN THE DISCUSSION Did you enjoy House of the Dragon Season 3? Was the Battle of Tumbleton worth the wait? What do you think of Rhaenyra's transformation? And most importantly: Who are YOU rooting for? Let us know in the comments! Episode 624 is here, and Brian Beckner and Ed Daly are covering an absolutely unhinged collection of stories from sports, entertainment, celebrity culture, and the internet. The guys open with a look back at the history of The Baller Lifestyle and the show's long-running inside joke behind the name before immediately getting into some truly bizarre territory. IN THIS EPISODE: The World's Smallest Penis Gets a Growth Spurt The man who claims to have the world's smallest penis has an enhancement procedure scheduled, funded in part by a surprisingly successful GoFundMe. Brian and Ed discuss the economics of internet sympathy, cosmetic procedures, and why people will apparently donate thousands of dollars to almost anything. The Silent iTunes Song Hack A brilliant old-school solution to the problem of your car automatically playing the first song in your iTunes library: a song consisting almost entirely of silence. The guys discuss the strange genius of solving technological annoyances with an even stranger technological workaround. ️ RIP: Vincent Pastore The guys remember the actor best known as Big Pussy Bonpensiero from The Sopranos and revisit one of the show's most memorable storylines. RIP: Don Nelson A look at the legendary NBA player and coach, including his championship career, his time with the Warriors and Mavericks, and his disastrous stint coaching the Knicks. RIP: Ben Jones / Cooter from The Dukes of Hazzard Brian and Ed discuss the actor behind one of television's most recognizable Southern characters. RIP: Glen Hansard The guys talk about the acclaimed Irish musician and his connection to The Commitments, along with the dangers of motorcycles. RIP: Tom Chadbon A brief tribute to the actor whose credits included Game of Thrones and Casino Royale. RIP: William Orbit The legendary producer's passing leads into a discussion of his work with Madonna, Blur, and other major artists. RIP: Robbie Albarado The guys remember the two-time Preakness-winning jockey and discuss the brutal physical demands of professional horse racing. Influencers, bizarre deaths & the internet Brian and Ed continue their unofficial investigation into the increasingly strange world of influencers, including a discussion of dangerous stunts and mysterious deaths. SPORTS Former NFL Receiver Arrested at a Bowling Alley Former NFL wide receiver Stedman Bailey is arrested after police allegedly find him engaged in sexual activity at a Florida mall bowling and arcade venue. Brian and Ed attempt to understand the decision-making involved in having sex in a public place surrounded by people who are literally there to bowl. The $800,000 Sports Betting Dispute A bettor claims he won nearly $800,000, only for Caesars to void the tickets over alleged violations of betting rules. Brian and Ed debate the fine print, sportsbooks, and whether casinos should be allowed to find technicalities when they don't want to pay a massive winning ticket. The Shohei Ohtani / Ippei Mizuhara Gambling Saga The conversation turns to gambling addiction, bookies, and the enormous amount of money reportedly lost in the Ohtani gambling scandal. Alleged NFL Player Investment Scam The guys discuss Mohamed Koulibaly, who was accused of running an e-commerce/investment scheme involving former NFL players before being found dead in a New Jersey swimming pool. Zach Hample Is Still Catching Everything The infamous baseball home-run ball hawk is back in the conversation after nearly catching another historic baseball. Brian and Ed discuss Hample's ability to predict where baseballs are going — and whether being a professional home-run ball collector is one of the world's most annoying hobbies. The Mookie Betts Foul Ball That Got Away Brian revisits the time Mookie Betts hit a foul ball directly toward him and he failed to make the catch, despite being perfectly positioned. Former Cal State Bakersfield Coach Gets Prison Time An update on the former Cal State Bakersfield basketball coach who was convicted in connection with a prostitution operation. VOICEMAILS & LISTENER MAIL Lala LSU Calls In The voicemail segment returns with Lala LSU, including a reminder of his signature sign-off and his now-infamous song. Should The Baller Lifestyle Do 75 Hard? Brian considers taking on another round of 75 Hard, potentially involving listeners and an additional daily guitar-practice requirement. The guys discuss discipline, habit formation, goal setting, and whether committing to a structured challenge through Thanksgiving could provide some much-needed motivation. Hash Browns vs. Home Fries A listener wants to settle one of the most important debates in breakfast history. Brian and Ed pick sides — while acknowledging that certain Irish-style breakfast potatoes may deserve consideration. Cocaine Wars: Tim Raines vs. Doc Gooden The Baller Lifestyle's unofficial Cocaine Wars returns. This time the competitors are two MLB legends: Tim "Rock" Raines Dwight "Doc" Gooden The guys discuss the notorious cocaine use of both players, including Raines' infamous habit of carrying cocaine in his uniform pocket and Gooden's struggles with addiction during his spectacular but troubled career. And, of course, the show gets another custom AI-generated Cocaine Wars theme song. The "Rot" Has Set In A listener submits a bizarre take on Mets rookie pitcher Jeffrey Yan celebrating after a strikeout, leading Brian and Ed into a discussion about player celebrations, individuality, ego, and the increasingly dramatic policing of professional athletes' behavior. How Often Do You Check Your Fly? A listener asks the guys how frequently they make sure their zipper is actually zipped. This leads to an unfortunately detailed discussion of zipper-related injuries and Brian's history of unfortunate encounters with his own pants. The Technology Problem Brian and Ed discuss the strange reality of modern technology, convenience, smartphones, and the idea that we're increasingly tethered to the machines in our pockets. The conversation eventually reaches Ted Kaczynski, The Terminator, data centers, and the uncomfortable possibility that some of the concerns about technology were not entirely insane — even if the methods were. PATREON / BONUS CONTENT The regular episode wraps up with a reminder that the show continues exclusively for Patreon subscribers. Brian and Ed then dive into even more bizarre stories, including: ️ The Influencer Who Allegedly Had Relationships With 50–75 Prisoners An internet personality allegedly maintained relationships with dozens of incarcerated men, leaving Brian and Ed with one major unanswered question: How exactly was she getting access to all these inmates? Death's Door A young couple disappears while kayaking near Wisconsin's infamous Death's Door, a dangerous stretch of water with a long history of shipwrecks. The story leads to a discussion about questionable vacation activities, kayaking, and whether any place called Death's Door should ever be on your travel itinerary. Yellowstone, Landman & Billy Bob Thornton Brian and Ed discuss the strange world of modern television, including Yellowstone, Landman, Billy Bob Thornton's unlikely commercial career, and the increasingly surreal nature of celebrity advertising. Robert Carradine / Revenge of the Nerds The guys discuss the tragic death of Robert Carradine and the lawsuit filed by his family against UCLA, while talking about mental illness, institutional responsibility, and the difficult circumstances surrounding his death. ️ Washington, D.C. Relationship Drama The episode closes with a particularly messy Washington political relationship story involving Eric Swalwell, Stephen Miller's former wife, Steve Bannon, and Elon Musk. Brian and Ed examine the strange intersection of politics, celebrity, sex, power, and Washington's seemingly endless relationship drama. Jason Momoa was the FIRST one to audition for GAME OF THRONES and the LAST one cast a year later. His cousin's impact on his life helped him make a strong choice that ultimately landed him the role. But it took him a few years and a couple of classes to trust his instinctive strong choices and learn how to "audition." BAYWATCH discovered him in his native home of Hawaii among a 1,300-person cattle call. Jason responded to a radio call announcing the audition that would pay him more than the daily rate of folding T-shirts at the family-owned surf shop. Jason's unique look has always made him a different choice, but also made opportunities few and far between. So Jason, with many of his close friends, formed the production company Pride of Gypsies, which has made Jason into an all-around filmmaker — writing, producing, directing and acting. Forever remembered for his unforgettable role as Drogo in Game of Thrones, Jason has since become a global star as Aquaman in the DC universe, Duncan Idaho in Dune, and the lead in Apple TV+'s See. He's also stepped further behind the camera, creating and starring in his passion project Chief of War, and appeared in A Minecraft Movie, The Fall Guy, and his travel/design series On the Roam. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Jason Momoa right here. House of the Dragon Season 3 ended with Sunfyre back from the dead and Rhaenyra executing the High Septon inside his own sept, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day gave the MCU its darkest Jean Grey yet. Frank, Thomas, and Jonathan break down both, plus the Marvel Hall H panel from San Diego Comic-Con and why Ghost Rider got announced with nothing behind it. On the House of the Dragon side: the Episode 7 resurrection that flipped the board, Helaena's tapestry and what it was quietly spoiling all along, where the show splits from Fire and Blood on her death, why Rhaenyra was never built to sit on a throne in the first place, and a final score for the season from each of them. Then a full spoiler conversation on Spider-Man: Brand New Day covering Sadie Sink's Jean Grey and the road to Dark Phoenix, the Hulk and the Punisher as mirrors for where Peter Parker could end up, the ending that made a handshake hit harder than a kiss, and whether Marvel has its footing back going into Doomsday, Secret Wars, and X-Men. Network news and picks of the week close it out. 00:00 Intro: Three Weeks Off, Alaska, and Missing Comic-Con 03:11 San Diego Comic-Con and the Marvel Hall H Fallout 05:53 Project Hail Mary Is the Movie of the Year 07:02 House of the Dragon Season 3: Rhaenyra's Turn and the Finale 18:53 Sunfyre, Helaena's Tapestry, and Book vs Show Changes 25:02 Season 3 Final Thoughts and Scores 28:00 Spider-Man: Brand New Day Spoiler Talk 33:00 Sadie Sink's Jean Grey and the Road to Dark Phoenix 41:02 What It Means for the MCU: Doomsday, Secret Wars, and X-Men 50:16 Network News and Picks of the Week All news discussed comes from GeekFreaksPodcast.com. Send it in. We read listener questions and topic suggestions on air. Key Takeaways Rhaenyra spent three seasons trying to be her father and the finale is the moment she stops. Frank frames it as her Anakin-to-Vader turn, right down to killing the realm's holy man and walking back out to claim she is the savior. Episode 7 and the return of Sunfyre lands as the season's biggest swing. Jonathan calls it a genuine plot twist with no setup, and it resets who is actually holding power going into Season 4. Helaena's knitting was spoiling the show in plain sight. Her tapestry lays out everything she has seen, and nobody in the story looks at it until it is too late. Both Frank and Jonathan score Season 3 an eight, with the caveat that Episodes 4 through 6 drag badly. Thomas, who bailed on the season early, gets talked into going back and finishing it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day works as a character study more than a clean three-act movie. The guys argue it is structurally strange on purpose, closer to picking up a random issue mid-run than a typical MCU installment. Jean Grey's power set is used in a much more specific and much darker way than expected, which the guys read as deliberate setup for Professor X's mental blocks and the eventual Dark Phoenix story. Quotes "She's now in her Darth Vader era." (Frank) "She was never meant to actually sit on the Iron Throne. She was always meant to capture it." (Frank) "The dragon fire ripping through a city is going to kill the good and the bad alike. It's not justice. It's just suffering." (Jonathan) "So many parts of this shouldn't work. But it does." (Thomas, on Spider-Man: Brand New Day) "I can't believe how much relief I suddenly felt from a damn handshake." Stephen Moss, Part Two: Moss explores the Raven, a bird of deep mythology and intelligence, appearing in Norselegends as Odin's messengers and in modern culture like Game of Thrones. Though often seen as harbingers of doom in works by Shakespeare and Poe, Ravens are highly adaptable and have successfully recolonized urban areas. The narrative shifts to the Cormorant, whose guano fueled a 19th-century fertilizer boom that enriched businessmen while exploiting Chinese indentured laborers. This led to synthetic fertilizers, which Moss argues have caused a decline in farmland birds like the Gray Partridge and Skylark. A tragic highlight is Mao Zedong's campaign against the Tree Sparrow, which triggered a massive insect population boom and a famine killing up to 50 million people. Moss also recounts the "Emu War," where the Emu successfully evaded the Australian army's machine guns. The Snowy Egret's near-extinction due to the fashion industry's demand for plumes is credited with sparking the founding of the Audubon Society by women activists. Finally, the Emperor Penguin is presented as a modern "miner's canary," signaling the urgent threat of the climate crisis to global biodiversity. (2)

It's a very upsetting time for us all having to revisited Space Jam 2. I mean sure it stars four times champion NBA superstar LeBron James plus the Looney Tunes plus every IP Warner Brothers has ever had their sweaty hands on (Game of Thrones, The Matrix, Gremlins, Harry Potter, Clockwork Orange, IT, Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, The Joker, Rick & Morty, Mad Max etc). The result is a more Ready Player One than Roger Rabbit which some people might like but I don't like that.
