Organics recycling and Senate Bill 1383 (SB1383) have been discussed on the podcast before, but the food waste recycling program has now officially begun! After months of preparation, equipment purchases, and legal requirements, the Solid Waste Division is ready to receive food scraps and other organic materials in your green bins.In today's episode, we bring back Paul Clemens, Public Works Deputy Director of Public Works, to discuss how and why the community needs to start recycling their food scraps. Besides being a state law and requirement, it's good for the environment and keeps heavy and wet materials out of our landfills.Like any big change, residential and commercial solid waste customers are going to have to adjust to a new way of doing things, but the end result is well worth the effort. Plus, it might be possible to save a little money on your solid waste bill!Tune in here for the high-level information you need to start recycling organics now and check out the two older podcast episodes linked in the show notes for more detailed information on SB1383 and food recycling in general. Description: In this episode, I am speaking with my buddy Thom Singer. I have known Thom for 15 or more years. I met with Thom when I was in Austin in May 2023, and he told me that he had recorded a TEDx talk called I Did That. One of the key points in his TEDx talk is it is alright to ask for help especially as it relates to mental health issues. This discussion about mental health is one of the most consequential discussions I have had on this podcast. Please listen to all of it. When I was in Austin in May of 2023, I had a coffee or beer with 10 individuals and 6 of them discussed some form of mental health issues that they were having or someone close to them was having. One of those was Thom. Thom's speaking business completely collapsed during the pandemic. I had Thom on the podcast during that time to track what he was doing to recover. The last time I had Thom on the podcast was in episode #255 in January of 2022 called Learning How to Adapt and Get Scrappy with Your Career with Thom Singer. Thom did a lot of different stuff to keep his career going. It took its toll on him in so many ways. What I want you to get from this episode is there are a lot of people out there suffering from various forms of mental health issues. It might be someone you care about or it might be you. It is okay to ask for help. I have sought out help at various times in my life with my own mental health issues and Thom did the same. This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot. I love getting scrappy. Even if I have the means, I purposefully work with as many limitations as I can so that if forces me to think about things and approach challenges with as creatively as possible. And that's what being scrappy is: it's engaging your creativity in the face of impossible odds. You have the capability to solve all the problems you encounter, but you can only do it if you're willing to think beyond how you've thought. The more you engage your creativity, the more you get scrappy, the better you'll be at facing the difficulties and challenges that you'll inevitably face. And eventually limitations no longer are limitations but become just another thing to figure out. =============Join our Facebook communityhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/redefinecommunityFREE!!! On today's episode I am talking about how it's time to get scrappy. Many of us are waiting around to take action on doing something that means a lot to us because we aren't sure how to go about doing it or how long it will take or what is the path to get there. I'm here to encourage you to just get going!! Just start! There is no one, right way, so just go! Nothing great happens from sitting on the sidelines and waiting. Nothing little happens either! You just gotta get down to business and get a little scrappy. Sometimes you'll feel like you are all over the place and bouncing in every direction. I am right here with you! I throw spaghetti at the wall to see if it sticks all the time. Sometimes I win and sometimes I learn. Honestly, I learn a lot more than I win, but I know to keep going! What will you do TODAY to get a little scrappy? Will you start micro-adjusting your diet, movement, personal care products, parenting style, cleaning products… What can you do right now to be just 1% better? Remember the 80/20 rule? I share it in the episode because there is no such thing as perfect!!

Description: This week I am bringing back Thom Singer to the podcast. I have known Thom for well over a decade and I first had him on back in 2017 to discuss his pivot from business development for law firms to becoming a full time public speaker and master of ceremonies primarily for associations. When the pandemic started Thom's business completely shut down and I had him on in episode 185 to discuss how he was coping. I later brought him back for episode 213 in July of 2021 to get an update. Thom recorded an end-of-year episode for his own podcast called What I Learned the Last Two Years. I was so impressed with that episode I wanted to bring Thom back on to discuss what he has had to do to adapt his business and more importantly what he has done to maintain his own mental health and happiness. Before we go any further let me mention I have a new sponsor MagicMind. Magic Mind is the world's first productivity drink. It is not an energy or coffee-based drink but a drink that will help you stay focused. I have been using it for several months it has made a real difference but more on this later in the show. You can get a 20% discount by going to Magicmind.co/repurpose and using the discount code repurpose20. For the full show notes click here.
Leaders of remote teams need both hard and soft skills but demonstrating those soft skills must be very intentional given the absence of body cues and language we rely in the physical workplace. In this episode, Dr. Kathy Ritchie in the School of Business at Northcentral University is joined by Kim Shepherd, former CEO of Decision Toolbox, and board member of Working Wardrobes and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, CA. She is the author of three books; Remote Work (2021)' Get Scrappy - business insights to make your company more agile (2015); The Bite Me School of Management - taking a bite out of conventional thinking (2010). Kim and Kathy discuss practical strategies to develop and demonstrate soft skills to successfully lead a virtual team.

"The value of an editor cannot be understated. The editor is the proxy for the audience." As the Chief Content Officer of MarketingProfs and the best-selling author of Everybody Writes and Content Rules, Ann Handley knows a thing or two about writing and editing. Most marketers have staffed up for content creation but what about editing? How do you know if you're creating what's best for your audience and brand. We discussed all of this with Ann on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Ann Handley Ann Handley is a Wall Street Journal best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the world’s first Chief Content Officer. Ann speaks and writes about how you can rethink the way your business markets. Cited in Forbes as the most influential woman in Social Media and recognized by ForbesWoman as one of the top 20 women bloggers, Ann Handley is the Chief Content Officer of MarketingProfs, a training and education company with the largest community of marketers in its category. She was a long time monthly columnist for Entrepreneur magazine, is a member of the LinkedIn Influencer program , and the co-author of the best-selling book on content marketing, Content Rules: How to Create Killer Blogs, Podcasts, Videos, Ebooks, Webinars (and More) That Engage Customers and Ignite Your Business (Wiley, originally published 2011. Paperback 2012.) The book has been translated into nine languages, including Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Portuguese. Her most recent book, Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content (Wiley, 2014) is a Wall Street Journal bestseller. She currently has more than 350,000 followers on Twitter and writes about content, marketing, and life at the highly entertaining AnnHandley.com. A pioneer in digital marketing, Ann is the co-founder of ClickZ.com, which was one of the first sources of interactive marketing news and commentary. She started her career as a business journalist and editor. Episode Highlights "Most writers are not great editors." Many of us have staffed up for content creation but what kind of quality control do we have in place? "The value of the editor cannot be understated. The editor is the proxy for the audience." How can brands up their editing game? "Peer editing is a great start. There's also the Hemingway app and Grammarly." What about your brand's tone of voice? Branding is often squishy to many. Brand voice is something that's harder still for businesses to get their arms around. But a deeper focus on brand voice can yield stronger content. "I always ask, if your logo or label was masked, would your customers' know it's your content and not your competition's?" Looking for a great example of a brand style guide? Ann points to UberFlip. The best part? Their online style guide is public! Everyone can be involved. Ann also reminded us that a good style guide should be like "bumpers on a bowling alley." It should help you stay in the lanes. In praise of slow marketing. At Content Marketing World, Ann spoke about slow marketing. "Today we want more funnel, more pipeline, more credit. Conventional wisdom tells you that if you slow down you're road kill." In many cases "you have to slow down before you can speed up." What brand has made Ann smile recently? Freaker USA. The beverage insulation category is decidedly unsexy but not for her friends at Freaker. Ann loves getting their fun emails. To learn more, follow Ann on Twitter, check out MarketingProfs, and her website. As We Wrap … Before we go, I want to flip the microphone around to our community … Recently Anna Yunker who gave us both a shout out Twitter with copies of both Get Scrappy and Everybody Writes in her reading stack. Charlotte Hawkes is our local Queen of Scrap Quilts. A quilter for 10 years, Charlotte's very first quilt was scrappy and she never looked back. In this episode, I interview Charlotte about her system for cutting and saving scraps, choosing quilts, and keeping track of all the projects she's got going on at once. I got a lot of great ideas from her, and I'm sure you will too! I haven't been able to dig up a picture of the blue and white quilt she made that I referenced in the episode yet, but here is one of Charlotte with one of her more recent scrap projects. Also in this episode: Sandy Update, Listener Comments, and many, many thanks!
I really want to get better at using my scraps, so I decided to do some research on scraps and scrap quilts. I found so much, though, that I'm having to use two episodes to cover it! So, in this first episode, after doing some catching up with listener comments and contributions, I share with you my experience, my research, and some listener suggestions, as we talk about a glossary of scrap-related terms, a little history of scrap quilting, how to collect scraps, getting yourself used to doing scrap quilts, what the best sizes are to cut your scraps into, and a little bit about storing and organizing scraps. (In episode 8, I'll share ideas for using your scraps!)
