Fares Abraham is a Palestinian Christian and Daniel Klein is a Jewish Christian. Both Fares and Daniel grew up minutes from each other in the West Bank, and yet they were worlds apart—Fares lived in occupied Palestine and Daniel live in an Israeli settlement. Both of them share about their very different journies, which end up in similar places, culminating in a friendship, which offers a glimpse of what peace between Israelis and Palestinians could look like: not through politics or slogans, but through the reconciling power of Christ, honest truth-telling, mutual dignity, and a shared commitment to justice, mutual flourishing, and peace for all who call the Holy Land home. As the gases slowly leak from Trump's orifices and IV holes, the bright flame of his inspiration to MAGA Christians is fading. Did he drain the swamp? Prosecute the pedophiles? Save the Holy Land? Lower gas prices? Give all the grill dads better health care? What was all the speaking in tongues for? JD Vance has an answer for the MAGA faithful: another memoir, another rebrand that turns to the device that made Hillbilly Elegy a smash hit, and the worst book ever: the gall to turn his personal and familial despair into the diagnosis of an entire culture, in Appalachia.  With Communion: Finding my Way back to Faith, Vance plays the same narcissistic trick: turning his lifelong journey through rightwing American Chrisitianity—with a short and shameful detour into New Atheism—to land in the Catholic faith of Leonard Leo, sketching out a redemption plan for every bro seeking their way home.  Show Notes Rerum Novarum (1891) — Pope Leo XIII Elizabeth Catte, What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia Appalachian Reckoning — Anthony Harkins and Meredith McCarroll, eds. Want to reach out to us? Want to leave a comment or review? Want to give us a suggestion or berate Anthony? Send us a text by clicking this link!“Can we please be normal?” That's the line we start from, because the Israel conversation rarely stays normal for long. We take a careful look at Michael Knowles' comments and the broader conservative Catholic media instinct to treat the modern State of Israel as a purely political alliance, detached from theology. We don't buy that split. When people invoke Scripture, prophecy, covenant language, or “God's promises,” they are already doing theology, even if they call it foreign policy. We're joined by Catholic State (Justin) and American Reform to sort out the terms that constantly get blurred: Israel as a people, Israel as a land, and Israel as a modern nation-state. From there we dig into Romans 9–11, what Saint Paul actually means by “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable,” and why Catholic fulfillment theology doesn't fit comfortably with Christian Zionism or dispensationalism. We also discuss Vatican II language that's often cited in online debates, plus earlier Catholic sources that shape how many traditional Catholics think about covenant, promise, and continuity. The conversation turns to a newer pro-Israel Catholic advocacy effort asking the Pope to clarify whether the founding and endurance of the State of Israel should be read as a sign of providence. We explain why that question isn't neutral, why “right to exist” can smuggle in theology, and how Catholics can reject sensationalism while still refusing a forced, two-option script. If you want a more precise, historically grounded way to think about Catholic teaching on Israel, the Holy Land, and political theology, this one will challenge you.Subscribe for more long-form Catholic conversations, share this with a friend who argues about Israel online, and leave a review with your biggest unresolved question after listening.Support the showGet 10% off an amazing Black Monk Rosary by going to https://www.blackmonkrosaries.com/?ref=AVOIDINGBABYLON and using code AVOIDINGBABYLON at checkout!Check out our sponsor, Nic Nac, at www.nicnac.com and use code "AB25%" for 25% off of your first order! Please subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKsxnv80ByFV4OGvt_kImjQ?sub_confirmation=1https://www.avoidingbabylon.comMerchandise: https://avoiding-babylon-shop.fourthwall.comLocals Community: https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comFull Premium/Locals Shows on Audio Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1987412/subscribeRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rss

In this episode of Live the Bible, we're exploring both. I can't wait to share the surprisingly simple application with you. Support the show

Rock, Paper, Swords! — Episode: The Crusader Storm with Nicholas Morton Released 12th June 2026Matthew Harffy and Justin Hill are joined by historian Nicholas Morton, associate professor at Nottingham Trent University and author of the new book The Crusader Storm: A Global History of the Wars for the Middle East (out 4th June 2026).The Crusades are one of history's most argued-over subjects — and Nicholas Morton thinks most people have got them wrong. In this wide-ranging conversation, he makes the case that the wars for the Holy Land were never a simple clash between Christianity and Islam, but a messy, many-sided contest between rival empires, dynasties and cultures.Along the way we talk about the extraordinary cast of individuals who populate his book — from a remarkably long-lived Arab nobleman who witnessed nearly the entire era, to Syriac Christians playing the long game between warring powers. We explore how Muslim Bedouin groups allied with the Crusaders, why Islamic medicine was flowing back to Western Europe, and how the demands of supplying the Crusader States drove a dramatic leap forward in medieval shipbuilding. We also get into the evolution of Crusader castles, the trade routes that made the Middle East the most strategically valuable region on earth, and what — if anything — the medieval period can tell us about the modern one.Plus: how do you write popular history without guessing? Can AI translate ancient Syriac? Have a question or comment for Pastor Plek or one of his guests. Send it here.A gospel booklet shows up in the mail behind the Iron Curtain and it changes a teenager's life forever. Sergei grew up in Belarus under the USSR, where the aftershock of World War II, state propaganda, and restricted Christianity shaped everything from what people believed to what they feared. We talk through what “freedom” looks like when the government can track believers, disrupt services, and fine families for worship. Then the story jumps forward to Israel. Sergei moved in 2021, started building life as a tour guide, and soon found himself living through October 7 and the long months of alarms that followed. He explains Iron Dome in everyday language, what safe rooms and community shelters are actually like, and why Israelis keep working, parenting, and praying even when sirens become part of the weekly routine. We also get into the human side of it: meeting neighbors in a shelter, watching kids serve in the IDF, and learning the difference between fear and caution. We zoom out on the headlines too, including Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, and why phrases like “from the river to the sea” can hide a much deeper rejection of Israel's right to exist. Sergei shares history from the 1947 partition plan, describes how propaganda spreads, and offers a Bible-shaped way to pray for Israel and for hearts to recognize Yeshua as Messiah. Holocaust education is required by law in dozens of American states — but the tools to teach it haven't kept pace with the students who need to receive it. Rabbi Michael Beyo and Dr. Simon Young founded Six Million Voices to close that gap. Using museum-grade photorealistic 360-degree reconstructions — no VR headset, no app, just a browser — they take students inside Auschwitz, the Warsaw Ghetto, the synagogues burned on Kristallnacht, and the streets of a Jewish world that no longer exists. More than 350,000 people have been reached. Over 70,000 are high school students.Laurie Cardoza-Moore sat down with both men at NRB 2026 for a conversation that goes deeper than technology. The story of the Jewish people does not begin with the Holocaust and it does not end there. It begins with Abraham. And for Christians, understanding that story — honestly, fully, without flinching — is not optional. It is biblical. June is here and so is a very special guest — Karla Woggon, retired Episcopal priest, spiritual director, and pilgrimage leader. Amy and Karla just returned from walking the Camino de Santiago in Portugal, and this month they are unpacking all of it — the walking, the transformation, the unexpected, and the mess in between. In this first episode, Karla shares what a pilgrimage actually is, why you don't have to be religious to go on one, and how taking or leading dozen pilgrimages across the world — from the John Muir Trail to the Holy Land to the coast of Portugal — changed the way she sees everything. Spoiler: she now sees all of life as a pilgrimage, and after this episode, you might too. Amy also opens up about why she signed up a year before she left, what she was running from, and what she was quietly hoping to find. If you've ever felt like life has been dragging you through something you didn't sign up for, this episode will reframe that in a way that might just change everything.   Want to go on a pilgrimage of your own? We discuss the challenges facing Palestinian Christians, the growing threat of settler violence, and the importance of preserving the Christian presence in the Holy Land. Father Bashar shares how the people of Taybeh remain rooted in faith despite immense hardship and why the world should stand in solidarity with these ancient Christian communities.

We open every episode with the St. Michael prayer. You know the words by heart. But do you actually know who you are talking to?James chats with Fr. Frederick Schmidt, a Norbertine priest and sacristan at St. Michael's Abbey in Southern California, to go deep on one of the most powerful and misunderstood figures in all of Scripture and Church history. Fr. Frederick and his fellow Norbertine Fr. Peregrine just released a children's book, "St. Michael the Archangel Through the Ages," and what comes out of this conversation is anything but child's play. You will hear about the bishop who delayed consecrating a shrine St. Michael told him to build...so St. Michael just did it himself, left an altar, lit candles, and pressed his footprint into the stone. You will hear about another bishop who ignored St. Michael twice, so the archangel reached down and poked a hole in his skull...a hole still visible to this day. You will hear about the nine choirs of angels, what each one actually does, and where St. Michael fits in the hierarchy. You will hear the real story behind Pope Leo XIII's vision — Satan asking God for a hundred years to destroy the Church, God saying yes — and how the St. Michael prayer was born from that moment. And you will hear about seven ancient shrines built at different times across different centuries that form a perfectly straight line from Ireland to the Holy Land.

Saint Constantine was born in 272, the son of Constantius Chlorus, ruler of the western part of the Roman Empire, and St Helen. When his father died in 306 he was proclaimed successor to the throne. The empire was ruled at that time by several Caesars, each with his own territory. When Constantine learned that the Caesars Maxentius and Maximinus had joined against him, he marched on Italy. It was there that, on the eve of a decisive battle outside Rome, he saw in the sky a radiant Cross with the words "In this sign conquer." He ordered that a battle-standard be made bearing the image of a cross and inscribed with the Name of Jesus Christ. The following day he and his forces attacked and won a spectacular victory. He entered Rome in triumph and in 312 was proclaimed "Emperor of the West" by the Senate. (His brother-in-law Licinius ruled in the East.) Soon thereafter he issued his "Edict of Milan," whereby Christianity was officially tolerated for the first time, and persecution of Christians ceased. (Many believe, mistakenly, that the Edict made Christianity the only legal religion; in fact, it proclaimed freedom of religion throughout the Empire).   Licinius, though he pretended to accept the Edict, soon began persecuting Christians in his domain. In response, Constantine fought and defeated him in 324, becoming sole Emperor of the entire Roman Empire. In 324 he laid the foundations of a new capital in the town of Byzantium; in 330 he inaugurated the new capital city, naming it "New Rome" and "Constantinople." In 325 he called the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea, attending its sessions himself. Shortly before his repose in 337, he received Holy Baptism; he died on Holy Pentecost, at the age of sixty-five, and was interred in the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.   St Constantine's holy mother Helen, in her role as "Augusta" of the Empire, founded countless churches. She traveled to Jerusalem and found the True Cross on which the Lord was crucified. In the Holy Land she established churches at the sites of Christ's Nativity and burial, which still stand today in much-modified form. She died at about eighty years of age.

Most men treat Easter like a finish line. The candles go out, the celebration ends, and life goes back to normal without any change. But the Resurrection isn't a closing chapter. It's a starting gun. And if you walked away from Easter Sunday the same man you were before, this episode is for you.Fr. Dominic breaks open the readings from the 4th Sunday of Easter (Good Shepherd Sunday) and delivers something every Catholic man needs to hear. It's a call to action rooted in the power of the Resurrection.Peter stands up before the Sanhedrin and speaks with such force that the crowd isn't just moved emotionally. They're cut to the heart. They don't ask, "What should we think?" They ask, "What should we do?" That's what the Holy Spirit produces in a man. Fr. Dominic also tackles suffering head-on. Christian suffering isn't something to avoid but something to expect and embrace. If you're living your faith out loud in the world today, the resistance will come. That's not a sign you're doing something wrong. That's a sign you're doing something right. And then there's the Good Shepherd. Fr. Dominic shares a story from his time in the Holy Land. What it reveals about us is convicting. Here's the challenge: Too many baptized, confirmed Catholic men are fully initiated and completely disengaged. You have everything you need and you're sitting on the sideline. That's not the life you were made for. The Resurrection happened for you. Stop leaving it at the church doors.

Maoz Inon lost his parents on October 7th. They were in their safe room, 200 meters from the Gaza border wall, when Hamas came. Aziz Abu Sarah lost his brother — the person who raised him — after he was tortured in an Israeli prison during the First Intifada. Two days after October 7th, Aziz wrote Maoz a letter. Maoz wrote back. That exchange became a friendship, a journey across the Holy Land, and now a New York Times bestselling book: "The Future Is Peace." This is not a polemic. It is not a policy paper. It is an invitation — to sit with grief that belongs to both sides, to doubt the narratives handed to you, and to imagine that the conflict will end. Because, as Maoz says, it will. The only question is when and how many more lives are lost before it does.
