Poni mentions that the Pirates never have a hard time finding a good closer. However, that was usually the case when Huntington was the GM. The Pirates traded Joe Musgrove to the Padres for a guy that recently retired from baseball, among two others that were not good. They also got Endy Rodriguez from the Mets in that deal. A caller says he likes Rafael Flores more because he plays first base as well as catcher. Another caller says that the Bednar trade made him buy Phillies hats for him and his wife and become a Phillies fan. Philip Rivers became a grandfather today.

Pirates saved roughly $20 million with the Bednar and Hayes trades. Jeff Passan loves the Bednar trade for the Pirates. Donny Football said on Twitter that it's incredible how bad Ben Cherington is at his job. Mullsy thinks the deal was below average for Ben Cherington. Poni says that one of the pros of the trade is that Flores has been productive in the minors. The Bednar trade does not measure up when compared to other deals. A caller calls for Ben Cherington to be fired now. An insider on Twitter said that the Bednar return was light in terms of the reliever market. We still don't have a Tommy Pham or IKF trade with 100 minutes until the trade deadline. A caller says that the Pirates won't reinvest the money they freed up. Poni and Mullsy both tweeted out polls asking if fans liked the Bednar trade, and both polls resulted in about 85% no. A caller is happy that Bednar got traded because he wants him to go win a World Series. Poni mentions that the Pirates never have a hard time finding a good closer. However, that was usually the case when Huntington was the GM. The Pirates traded Joe Musgrove to the Padres for a guy that recently retired from baseball, among two others that were not good. Nattering E Trades #6: Trades Involving Draft Picks Part 1 Eli & Philip

What up world it's your boy E coming at you from the Nattering With E studios. After a brief break to battle off a bout with laryngitis, we are back with our next NFL chapter of Nattering E Trades! Earlier this week, the NBA not the NFL had one of the most intriguing trades we'll probably go back and look at in a couple of years from now. No active players were traded between the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz, only draft picks. The Jazz traded three first-round draft picks this year, the 2027 and 2029 drafts for Phoenix's unprotected 2031 first-round pick. The deal wasn't unprecedented but signaled to the rest of the league that the Suns are probably looking to pull off a bigger deal later. So you might wonder, what does this have to do with the NFL? Well, I'm glad you asked, as today in part 1 of a 6 part series we'll be looking at the three best trades to involve draft picks in the NFL. In three weeks we'll be looking at the three worst draft pick-related trades in NFL History. TOP 3 TRADES Involving Draft Picks The Best: Number 3 Eli for Philip 3. The year is 2004 and after having bad seasons in 2003, the New York Giants and San Diego Chargers pull off a trade that essentially allows each to acquire picks that'll eventually turn out to be two hall of fame caliber quarterbacks. The San Diego Chargers had the first overall pick in the 2004 draft and took Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning the younger brother of Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos great Peyton Manning. Going into the draft it was well known that Eli had no intention of playing in San Diego, despite them owning the first overall draft choice. Enter the New York Giants. Finishing with the fourth worst record in the NFL in 2003 and thus the fourth overall selection in 2004, the Giants took NC State quarterback Philip Rivers fourth overall. They then would broker a deal with the Chargers, to send the aforementioned Rivers along with a third round selection in 2004 and first and fifth round picks in 2005 to the Chargers for the disgruntled Eli Manning. While the trade is mostly seen as a success for the Giants, who received Manning who would lead them to two Super Bowls and win two MVP awards, the Chargers did pretty well themselves. Rivers is also considered a hall-of-fame quarterback despite never making it to the Super Bowl, he often led the league in passing yards and touchdowns. The Chargers also were able to draft kicker Nate Kaeding with the third-round selection in 2004, and the first-round pick in 2005 got them linebacker Shawne Merriman to bolster the Chargers defense for most of his six seasons. He also led the league in quarterback sacks in his first three seasons with 39.5 and was the defensive rookie of the year.

#TITANS #TITANUP #CHARGERS #TITANS #TITANUP #CHARGERS #lachargers INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- — The combination of steady play by Justin Herbert and a strong defense has given the Los Angeles Chargers their best start in six years. Herbert threw for a touchdown and ran for one, and the Chargers had seven sacks in their third straight victory, 27-17 over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The Chargers are 6-3 — their best start since going 7-2 in 2018 — and have won four of five to surpass last season's victory total. “A complete, total team win. When you look at the offense, the drives that we put together ... tough, gritty type of conversions on third down and fourth down,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “They're playing lights out on the defensive side. And then special teams, another big return by our punt return unit.” Herbert completed 14 of 18 passes for 164 yards and had 32 yards rushing. He is the seventh quarterback since the NFL-AFL merger, and the first since Philip Rivers in 2018, to have a passer rating of at least 90 in each of the first nine games of the season. The defense — which is allowing a league-low 13.1 points per game — is the fourth since 1990 and the first since the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs to allow 20 or fewer points in each of its first nine games. “Rush and coverage. We have some of the best rushers in the league and that allows us to make plays,” safety Derwin James said. The Titans (2-7) came in with the NFL's top-ranked defense overall and against the pass but forced Los Angeles to go three-and-out only twice in nine possessions. Calvin Ridley scored both of Tennessee's touchdowns and had five catches for 84 yards. Will Levis, who missed the last three games with a shoulder injury, was 18 of 23 for 175 yards, but the sacks limited his effectiveness. “It was a nice start. It was cool to get the ball downfield and get that shot dialed up, something we've been waiting on," Levis said. "Second half, I think for me personally, a couple situations where I could have just got the ball out of my hands earlier, help the line with pressure." Herbert gave the Chargers a 13-7 lead with 1:55 remaining in the first half on a 4-yard run off right tackle out of the shotgun formation on fourth-and-1. “I thought we did a great job from start to the end being able to move the ball, run the ball, pass the ball however we needed to move it,” Herbert said. “I thought the guys up front did an incredible job and to be able to put that together against a very good opponent, it means a lot to me.” The game turned with 21 seconds remaining in the first half. The Titans appeared to tie it at 13 when Roger McCreary ran back Herbert's fumble 20 yards into the end zone. After a replay review, the call was changed to an incomplete pass because officials determined Herbert's arm was going forward, leaving Titans coach Brian Callahan incensed. Callahan said officials initially told him the call was going to stand before they and the replay center in New York took another look. “I'll let you guys decide what you think the call should have been, but I don't want to lose any money,” he said. Harbaugh and Herbert said the reversal was huge. “To be able to go to halftime with the lead and to avoid a play like that is big time,” Herbert said. And then the Chargers took control in the second half. Herbert extended the lead to 20-10 with three minutes to go in the third quarter on a 16-yard pass to Quentin Johnston in the right corner of the end zone. Hassan Haskins, who spent two seasons with Tennessee, extended the advantage to 17 points with a 1-yard dive up the middle. That capped an 11-play, 95-yard drive that ate up seven minutes. “It was just steady. It's like death by a thousand paper cuts when you play that way, and we kind of gave up just enough yards every time on a 95-yard drive to allow them to go punch it in for seven when we had them backed up on the 5,” Callahan said. The Eli Manning Hall of Fame debate is about to achieve critical mass as Peyton's little brother headlines the latest class of Canton hopefuls. Manning is one of the most beloved players in Giants history after leading Big Blue to two Super Bowl titles, both against Tom Brady and the Patriots. However, Eli wasn't drafted by the Giants. Instead he was taken - against his wishes - by the San Diego Chargers and traded to the Giants for Philip Rivers and a pick. But what would've happened had Manning agreed to play for the Chargers? Would he have led the long-suffering Chargers to the promised land? Who would the Giants have taken instead with the fourth pick? Where would Rivers have ended up playing? And why does this all affect [Joaquin] Phoenix? Find out on Alternate Routes.Listen to Alternate Routes on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts.
