On this episode, we talk to Jessica G. She's a woman on a mission. With an established career as a successful entrepreneur, she combines her talents of brand management and persuasive speaking to be a beacon of light, creating momentum for change. Her natural ability to raise the vibration of any room is felt through her illuminating sparkle, tenacity, and desire to create hope for so many. We discuss loving life, protecting your energy, and leaving a legacy. This episode contains discussions about suicide. While suicide is often associated with feelings of loneliness and isolation, it is a shared and far-reaching public health problem. As the tenth leading cause of death in the United States in 2019, suicide affects all ages and types of people. But thanks to an increase in awareness and resources, prevention efforts have become more common and effective.Despite outdated misperceptions, suicide is neither a personal failure nor the evidence of mental illness, but rather a common human response to difficult environmental factors and emotional pain. Improving life circumstances, enhancing social connections, and reducing emotional pain are the most effective ways to reduce the frequency and intensity of suicidal thoughts and feelings.Mental health organizations around the country recognize National Suicide Prevention Week and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month during the month of September each year. However, working together to develop our collective understanding and awareness of suicide in order to prevent it is something we need to be doing every day. Talking to a counselor about any questions you have about how to help support others or how to get help for yourself is a great place to start. 988 is the new three-digit dialing code that routes callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This week I'm diving into three key beauty stories that have basically annoyed a lot of us, or, if not you, me! The three stories I'm focusing on are a shady aesthetician who Photoshopped an actress from Stranger Things to look 'prettier', the toxic beauty standards that Tyra Banks and her America's Next Top Model team fed to us back in the 2000s and the Bali Body self-tanner that's allowing white women to change their race while never having to deal with racism or stereotypes. I'd love to know your thoughts on this episode, so feel free to get in touch @beautymepodcast on Instagram or Twitter and be sure to follow me on TikTok @charissekenion to see some video content on this toxic topic and more. Berlin-based beauty creator Jessica G adores makeup for so many reasons and has grown up during the rise of social media. As such she has complex views on being both an influencer (approaching 30K on Instagram) and being influenced by what she sees. In this episode Jessica reminisces about her mum giving her chamomile tea hair rinses as a child and remembers how she felt when she first encountered acne as a teenager. She shares how she first started playing with makeup and how YouTube was a major part of that, and why she often feels tempted by lip fillers and other tweakments that she sees on other influencers and celebrities. We also touch on burnout and overwhelm, two things I'm definitely going to be focusing on over the next few episodes. Hosted by Thomas K. Varghese Jr., MD, MS, the “Beyond the Abstract” program explores the “whys” behind articles in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and discusses next steps with authors and thought leaders. In the latest episode, Mara B. Antonoff, MD, Jessica G.Y. Luc, MD, and Jason J. Han, MD, join Dr. Varghese to examine how social media has become an “inescapable” part of academic life and its role in the academic publishing process. While social media engagements may seem fleeting, the authors agreed that durable scholarly impact of social media exists. Also discussed in this episode is how the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a gap between the worlds of science and communication; so it is more important than ever to consider social media to help create pathways, form collaborations, grab attention, and explain the science. Jessica G is a 34 year old stroke survivor. She suffered from unexplainable and hardly treatable migraines for years before experiencing a stroke. Along the way- her professional life and persuits have been hijacked and everything in general has been flipped upside-down. Yet on the otherside of the stroke, Jessica finds more ease, contentedness and gratitude in her emotional life than she ever had pre-stroke AND she no longer has migraines. Her drive to survive is strong and not without the support of loved ones. This story and interview is recorded only 6 months after the entirely debilitating stroke and her improvements are heartwarming. Jessica is a woman who has pulled herself out of trenches time and time again, primarily through accessing self sourced inner strength and understanding and practicing the therapeutic art of macrame.
