This week we have the @bvkpodcast on as guests to talk about Near Dark. A neo-western 80's vampire horror movie that literally none of us had seen. Felicia and Brad bring some trivia about the making of this movie including how Katheryn Bigelow stole some actors from the set of Aliens. Tangents include: what makes a movie a western, scary movie covers that are seared into our memories, and how much cocaine Bill Paxton had to be on while shooting this movie. Greetings, Script Apart listeners. Your mission today, should you choose to accept it – listen to the one and only David Koepp regale us with fascinating stories and insights from an astonishing three-decade career in Hollywood. Having written movies totalling over $9bn at the box office, David is a giant of the screenwriting world. Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Carlito's Way, Panic Room and War of the Worlds are just a few of the iconic films that David has penned over the years, making the decision of which movie of his to cover today a tricky one. We threw the question over to him to decide, and his pick of the bunch was 1996's masterful Mission: Impossible – a Tom Cruise espionage epic that spawned five blockbuster sequels, with two more now on the way.David's Mission: Impossible was markedly different to the most recent instalments in the series. His adaptation of the 1960s TV series was a lean, patient spy slow-burn that had action and excitement, but thrived on tension and paranoia. It followed Ethan Hunt, a secret agent framed for the murder of his friends and colleagues following a botched mission in Prague. It's full of the sort of storytelling smarts that is commonplace in David's work, evident in everything from his 1989 debut Apartment Zero to last year's collaboration with Steven Soderbergh, the Covid thriller KIMI. In this wide-ranging conversation, David tells me about the chaos that submerged Mission: Impossible at multiple points in its development, the explosive prison break scene that was cut from his screenplay for budgetary reasons, the artful exposition that's a regular feature in his storytelling (seriously, study the Mr. DNA sequence in Jurassic Park if you don't believe me) and how he approaches screenwriting versus his work as a novelist. Last month, he released Aurora, his second novel, about a solar flare that knocks the Earth's electrical grid out and sends society into disarray. It's soon to be made into a movie, with Katheryn Bigelow. This episode will not self-destruct in five seconds – but you should still hurry to listen to it, because you don't want to miss David's incredible stories and advice for emerging writers. This was a one fun. Enjoy.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico...it very well may be your last! Our latest look at crime cinema has us trudging through the muck of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, director Sam Peckinpah's unforgiving neo-western from 1974. But before we descend into oblivion, we load up a Blue Plate Special where we discuss Kathryn Bigelow's appropriately titled Strange Days, parse the latest David Cronenberg release Crimes of the future, and celebrate the dearly departed character acting legend Phillip Baker Hall. Upon eventually taking the off-ramp to Hell, we consider the game changing filmography of Peckinpah, the beauty of Warren Oates, and weigh what exactly today's film in question adds to the genre complexion of New Hollywood's cynicism. The spotlight is on guest Patrick Harney who began his acting career performing in musicals and then studied acting while attending Michigan State University, becoming involved in student films. During that time, he was nominated for a "Pulsar Award" in the category of "Best Lead Actor in a Musical" for his role as "Eddie Birdlace" in the musical, "Dogfight." In 2016, he landed the supporting role of "Vince" in the MSU feature film called, "Sorta Late," which premiered at the "Traverse City Film Festival." Patrick later had the opportunity to have background work in Michael McCallum's short film, "Eskimo Brothers" and Katheryn Bigelow's, "Detroit" and also have a role in the pilot for a sci-fi series called, "Electron Blade" as "Sindricus." In 2018, Patrick had the lead role of "Matt" in the film, "Scapegoat" and appear in the music video for "Torn Apart" by the metal band "Of Virtue." His voice was utilized by SiN Studios to produce the video game "Tuebor," as well as a short film called, "Letters." In 2019, Patrick teamed up with Jeff Kapp, the director of "Scapegoat" to produce and star in Vigilant Entertainment's feature film, "Locker 42." In addition to recent projects, he had also taken his study further at the "Goteri Creative Arts Studio." Patrick also said vacation and hard work can take us places and that we can never give up on our dreams, which he emphasized. "What we have…we can really make a difference. So, keep pursuing those things. Don't stop. Listen to the internal voice that you have and continue to just develop those things and skills, and your own uniqueness. Don't make yourself a blueprint of everybody else." Not only will you be entertained by this episode, but you will also gain great insight and inspiration, along with what's up and coming from him, such as he "will be acting and producing on a movie set to start filming fall of 2020… so be on the lookout! On this edition of Parallax Views, the new hit Marvel Studios movie The Eternals has garnered criticism for its treatment of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima/Nagasaki during WWII. Additionally, it has raised the specter of the relationship Marvel Studios with the Pentagon and whether said relationship is ethical or unethical. In truth, its not just Marvel Studios though. Hollywood has a long relationship with the Pentagon dating back to the WWII era. David Saviliev, a contributor to Responsible State, the official publication of the Quincy Institute, joins me on this edition of the program to discuss the often underreported relationship between Hollywood and the military. We also manage to discuss the story of Marvel comics attempting to team up with the arms manufacture Northrupp Grumman and the relationship between Hollywood and the CIA when it came to the (arguably pro-torture) Katheryn Bigelow movie Zero Dark Thirty. Movies mentioned in this episode that were either supported or rejected by the Pentagon include Iron Man, Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down, Captain Marvel, Independence Day: Resurgence, Michael Bay's Transformers movies, The Avengers, Clint Eastwood's Heartbreak Ridge, and Top Gun. We also discuss the China/Hollywood relationship, military involvement in Hollywood and recruitment agendas, the Pentagon's apparent dislike for movies where Will Smith dates a stripper, the Pentagon's definition of "accurate portrayals" of itself in films including anything that is critical or negative being "inaccurate", Captain Marvel and the Air Force's recruitment campaign, taxpayer dollars and the Hollywood/Pentagon relationship, how Pentagon involvement with Hollywood cuts down on movie production costs, Pentagon approval of screenplays, David Robb's Operation Hollywood (a notable book spotlighting Hollywood's military ties), and more! Amy Williams is a producer/director responsible for raising financing for multi-million-dollar films, putting together award-winning packaging with creative name casting and department heads as well as securing sales and distribution for feature films. Over the past 5 years she has produced 5 feature films: The Last Treasure Hunt (2016), Mothers and Daughters (2016) with Courtney Cox and Sharon Stone, Rock, Paper, Scissors (2017), A Dark Foe (2019) and the multi-award winning Hunter’s Moon (2020) that will be coming out this September. Her next film, Jacir, starring Lorraine Bracco, will shoot in Memphis this fall. Jacir was written and will be directed by Waheed AlQawasmi, a former creative director at Fox Television. Williams was born in Memphis but grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. At the time, the neighborhood was notorious for drugs and crime, but was still home to many young parents and their children. This included Amy’s parents (Jean and Joelle), Amy, and her 5 siblings. Her father, Jean, had a Ph.D. in German literature, and was a college professor. But he had a wide range of gifts and interests that he was determined to pass on to his children. He was a poet, a writer, and a photographer. He had a keen eye for films and movie making. Williams mother, Joelle Morrison, also a wonderful writer and copy editor for many trades and newspapers over the years. In 1970, when Jean was writing a critical expose on Franz Kafka, he was severely injured and unable to cognitively function as the “genius father” Amy had always known him to be. It changed the course of the family as a whole, and Amy, fueled by her heartbreak and passion, recalls this memory in her first film, The Morrison Project, which won Best Documentary and the Golden Starfish Award at The Hamptons Film Festival in 2003. Simultaneously, Amy has been working as a producer and director. Her short film Respire garnered her the award for Best Director at California Women’s Film Festival and Best Narrative Short at California International Shorts Festival. She also directed A Night in Jail starring Michael Madsen and Max Madsen, a short based on true events dealing with mental illness and drugs. This film has screened as an official selection at the Oscar qualifying HollyShorts and LA Shorts Williams counts Martin Scorsese, Lee Daniels, Quentin Tarantino, Katheryn Bigelow, and the Coen Brothers as some of her biggest influences.

064 - This has got to be our most requested movie, and I'm not sure why it took us this long to get to it. I guess our request system is flawed? In any case - we've gone and done it - and finally cracked out first Keanu joint. So go prepare yourself a snack and join us as we dive deep into the year that was 1991 and the cultural artefact that is Point Break, with all the detail you have come to expect, and the big questions that need to be asked - like, is this a bad movie, a good-bad movie, a good-good movie, or somehow magically all of the above?
The spotlight is on guest Patrick Harney who began his acting career performing in musicals and then studied acting while attending Michigan State University, becoming involved in student films. During that time, he was nominated for a “Pulsar Award” in the category of "Best Lead Actor in a Musical" for his role as “Eddie Birdlace” in the musical, “Dogfight.” In 2016, he landed the supporting role of “Vince” in the MSU feature film called, “Sorta Late,” which premiered at the “Traverse City Film Festival.” Patrick later had the opportunity to have background work in Michael McCallum's short film, “Eskimo Brothers” and Katheryn Bigelow's, “Detroit” and also have a role in the pilot for a sci-fi series called, “Electron Blade” as “Sindricus.” In 2018, Patrick had the lead role of “Matt” in the film, “Scapegoat” and appear in the music video for "Torn Apart" by the metal band “Of Virtue.” His voice was utilized by SiN Studios to produce the video game “Tuebor,” as well as a short film called, “Letters.” In 2019, Patrick teamed up with Jeff Kapp, the director of “Scapegoat” to produce and star in Vigilant Entertainment's feature film, “Locker 42.” In addition to recent projects, he had also taken his study further at the “Goteri Creative Arts Studio.” During this episode, Patrick shared how his passion for entertainment started and continued to develop into a thriving career, with a delightful telling of tales along the way. By listening carefully, not only will you hear how successful he has been, you will gain some of his insight about things that are really important, such as how crucial having a support system is. Patrick also said vacation and hard work can take us places and that we can never give up on our dreams, which he emphasized. “What we have…we can really make a difference. So, keep pursuing those things. Don't stop. Listen to the internal voice that you have and continue to just develop those things and skills, and your own uniqueness. Don't make yourself a blueprint of everybody else.” Not only will you be entertained by this episode, but you will also gain great insight and inspiration, along with what’s up and coming from him, such as he “will be acting and producing on a movie set to start filming fall of 2020… so be on the lookout! https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6018841/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 https://www.facebook.com/OfficialPHarney Instagram and Twitter: @PHarns194
In 1995, Katheryn Bigelow and James Cameron tested the boundaries of reality with Strange Days. Starring Ralf Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis and Tom Sizemore, this film noir, sci-fi flick follows Lenny as he prepares for a new millennium as an “experience dealer”, selling pieces of people’s lives that can be viewed and experienced using SQUID technology. In the meantime, some LA cops kill a famous singer in cold blood, and that experience is captured via SQUID, and the tape ends up with Lenny…sort of. With the help of Mace, his friendly neighbourhood bodyguard limo driver, and Max, the whispy haired private detective turns bodyguard, they try to prevent a riot and save their own skins while the bad coppers try to save their own skins. Made for $42M, Strange Days was a commercial failure, bringing in only $8M at the box office. But since then, it has found a cult following and is now remembered slightly more fondly than when it was first released. But does it hold up? Listen as Jon, Colin and Brent slap some squids on their heads and see if they share a favourable experience filled with sex, drugs, and fun, or if this dark flick brings up only bad memories of the new millennium filled with foggy remembrances and forgettable characters.
When we were recording this it was Labor Day, and it was Keanu’s 55th birthday, so we decided that we couldn’t celebrate the end of summer and Keanu’s special day any better way than by talking about premiere action movie director Katheryn Bigelow’s 1991 masterpiece POINT BREAK. This one went long, because a lot of it is just us quoting all of the moments we love from the movie, but there’s also a lot of substance in here, dammit, so stick with us. Vaya con dios.

On this edition of Radio Free Acton, Bruce Edward Walker speaks with Ismael Hernandez of the Freedom and Virtue Institute about "Detroit," the new film from Katheryn Bigelow about the Algiers Motel incident during the 1967 Detroit riots, particularly discussing how this film does or does not reinforce harmful narratives within the black community in the United States. We follow that up with a conversation between assistant producer Caroline Roberts and Jacqueline Isaacs about her contribution to the book "Called to Freedom: Why you can be Christian and Libertarian." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Let's take a trip back to 1967, Detroit Michigan, Shahir and Matt were merely twinkles in their respective dad's eyes and the Algiers hotel was about to become the scene of a horrific hostage crisis. Kathryn Bigelow's "Detroit" may not be the summer escapism you're looking for, but it makes for a fascinating discussion point about the cultural ownership of tragedy and who gets to retell stories of the past. We're also going to participate in the NYC One Film event, so please go to www.nyc.gov/onefilm to cast your vote for the one film to rule them all. Please email us your thoughts and comments at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or hit us up on Twitter (www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod). While you're there, try out #filmfood... it's delicious! Error and Omission: Shahir incorrectly cites Katheryn Bigelow's "Near Dark" as featuring Christopher Lambert. Near Dark in fact stars Adrian Pasdar.

Our buddies over at the Nattercast, lead by fearless hosts Jason and Sion decided to commission an action movie classic, 1991's Point Break. Starring Keanu Reaves, Gary Busey, and Patrick Swayze, and directed by Katheryn Bigelow, Point Break offers up an uncompromising look into the savage beating heart that is the suburban surfer gangster, brought into sharp relief against the rural football FBI agent, its natural foe. We thrill to the spectacular work capturing the thrilling surf and sky stunts, laugh at the acting and dialog, and are stunned at the effectiveness of a rubber Ronald Reagan mask when deployed for mayhem. With skin more volatile than kerosine mixed with flash paper, the vampires of Katheryn Bigelow's Near Dark redline their existence into the daylight hours (often). Vampire Weekends continues with our penultimate offering this week on The Cult of Matt and Mark. A Western-genre modern-horror mashup, Near Dark is stylistically polished with gritty murderous characters that eventually gets what's coming to them, and deliciously so. However, for a horror film, it really fails to terrify.Download: 219 Near Dark
Remember X-MEN: APOCALYPSE? You might not, but the fast food chain White Castle certainly does. In a bit of odd timing, they just recently unveiled their special "X-Menu," in honor of the film's home video and digital release. Throwing all concerns for our safety aside, on this episode we do a live taste test of all four (well, three and a half) items from the special menu. So prepare to pray for your fearless hosts as they try the Ghost Pepper Cheese Slider, the X-Treme Ghost Pepper Cheese Slider, the Apocalyptic Waffle Slider, and Mutant Loaded Fries. Warning: If the sounds of people eating are not your bag, this might be as scary for you to listen to as it was for us to actually attempt. Besides the taste test experiment, we also try to figure out some of the other facets of White Castle's X-Men promotion, such as the offer of an "X-Diploma" and a contest to receive an "X-Men make-over." Plus, discussion of X-Men action figures and our own personal X-Men collectible collections, as well the lost potential of Katheryn Bigelow and Robert Rodriguez directed X-Men films, the AGENTS OF SHIELD season premiere, and more.
