Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened down 57-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 23,422 on turnover of 7.5-billion N-T. The market rose last Friday after recovering, as the bellwether electronics sector - led by artificial intelligence-related stocks - regained its footing, pushing the main board to close at the day's high. Market watchers say investors appear to have moved away from U-S President Donald Trump's tariff actions, and are now instead focusing on economic fundamentals. Luermen spring festival draws over 700,000 in Tainan Organizers of the annual Lunar New Year event at Tainan's Lu-Er-Men Matsu Temple say an estimated 700,000 people attended the event this past weekend despite the cold weather. The event marks the 'spring ox' ritual and was celebrated with a huge two-hour long firework show, a drone light show featuring 500 drones forming images of dragons, snakes, and the Goddess Matsu, a parade and musical performances. Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che was the guest of honor at the opening ceremony at the temple in the city's Annan District. He was accompanied by the four Japanese mayors from Fukushima Prefecture. The Lu-Er-Men Spring Festival dates back to 1725 - and symbolized prosperity for the coming year. A large paper-mache ox is tossed into the crowd as part of the festival and attendees (參加者) tear off pieces for good luck. NKorea Kim Vows to Bolster Nuclear Program North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said an elevated U.S. security partnership with South Korea and Japan poses a grave (嚴重) threat to his country. In a speech marking the 77th founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army, Kim said the U.S.-Japan-South Korea trilateral security partnership established under a U.S. plot to form a NATO-like regional military bloc is inviting military imbalance on the Korean Peninsula. Kim vowed to further bolster the north's nuclear weapons program. He has previously made similar warnings, but his latest statement implies again that he won't likely embrace US President Donald Trump's overture to meet him and revive diplomacy anytime soon. US Alaska Crash Remains Recovered Return to Table of contents US authorities say the remains of all 10 people killed in Alaska plane crash have been recovered (重新找到). AP correspondent Julie Walker reports. Russia Island on Alert After Chinese Ship Stranding Part of Russia's Pacific island region of Sakhalin is on high alert after a Chinese cargo ship ran aground off its southwest coast. Local officials say there is no fuel spillage and no danger to the crew of the An Yang 2, which is carrying coal and heavy fuel oil. Russia's emergencies ministry said 20 crew were aboard. Preparations are underway to pump fuel out of the damaged vessel, which is stranded (擱淺) in shallow waters off the region's coast. Earlier this year, hundreds of volunteers in southwestern Russia spent weeks trying to contain a massive oil spill from two storm-stricken tankers in the Kerch Strait near Crimea. Edition No70 | 27-12-2024 - It's a tragedy that politicians can't seem to act on warnings alone, and the public can't be moved to outrage, passion or action by an impending disaster or crime. Last week we had a case in point where it's the images of thick, viscous oil washing up on the Black Sea coast. ---------- SILICON CURTAIN FILM FUNDRAISER A project to make a documentary film in Ukraine, to raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle and in supporting a team running aid convoys to Ukraine's frontline towns. https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras ---------- Stricken oil tankers show the risks of Russia's ageing 'shadow fleet', which it uses to bypass sanctions. Although the vessel that split apart was covered by Russian insurer VSK, it's doubtful whether the costs of the cleanup operations will be covered. The full scale of the various incidents, as well as their long-term impact on the environment are so far unknown. One crew member was killed after the Volgoneft 212 split in half, with 12 rescued, while authorities said all 14 crew aboard the Volgoneft 239, which ran aground 80 metres from the shore near the port of Taman, were also rescued. Russian authorities sought to limit the damage from oil spilled into the Kerch Strait by two ageing tankers that were damaged during a heavy weekend storm – though part of the campaign was informational, seeking to deny the seriousness, and not only focused on the physical clean-up. The ships are on average more than 50-year-old, and were carrying some 9,200 metric tons (62,000 barrels) of oil products in total. Volgoneft 212 was constructed in 1969 and Volgoneft 239 in 1973. The spill is likely to become one of the largest environmental disasters to affect the region in recent years. The Kerch Strait, which separates mainland Russia from the Moscow-annexed Crimea region, is a key route for exports of its grain and fuel products. ---------- NEWS SOURCES: https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-polytics/3939182-estonian-pm-names-two-options-facing-russian-shadow-fleet-vessels-caught-without-insurance.html https://www.ft.com/content/8a485a6b-477e-4087-83f4-eca357082d71 https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russian-tankers-damaged-kerch-strait-were-carrying-62000-barrels-oil-products-2024-12-16/ https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/16/ukraine-calls-for-sanctions-against-russia-oil-tankers-over-black-sea-spill https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/12/16/russian-tankers-caught-in-storm-may-have-leaked-3k-tons-of-oil-products-state-media-a87359 https://kyivindependent.com/sinking-of-two-russian-oil-tankers-may-cause-significant-environmental-impacts-greenpeace-warns/ https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-shadow-dark-oil-tankers-sanctions-navy-warships-escort-2024-12 ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted March 5 at 7 a.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump are poised to have the biggest day of the primary campaign move them to the brink of winning their party’s presidential nominations and set up a historic rematch that many voters would rather not endure. Super Tuesday elections are being held in 16 states and one territory. Hundreds of delegates are at stake, the biggest haul for either party on a single day. In a dramatic departure from competitive Super Tuesdays of the past, the contests are effectively sealed this year. Both Biden and Trump have easily repelled challengers despite polls showing voters don’t want this year’s general election to be identical to 2020’s. CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A fire raging at a building that supplies novelties, phone accessories and other merchandise to discount stores has caused multiple explosions that injured at least two people and rocked suburban Detroit. The Clinton Township Police Department said on Facebook that debris was sent into the air and came down as far as a mile away. Exploding projectile canisters damaged a fire vehicle and a police vehicle. The explosions started about 8:50 p.m. Monday at a business called Select Distributors. The Select Distributors website advertised glass products and nitrous oxide among its supplies. The business did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Police in Nashville say that five people have died after a small plane crashed near an interstate highway, shutting down multiple lanes. The Metro Nashville Police Department says the single-engine plane crashed Monday night just off of Interstate 40 in the western part of the city. Police posted a photo of charred wreckage of the small plane in the grass along the interstate. Transportation officials say the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 have been closed. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority says the crash happened 3 miles south of John C. Tune Airport. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Heavily armed gangs have tried to seize control of Haiti’s main international airport as they exchanged gunfire with police and soldiers trying to repel them. The Toussaint Louverture International Airport was closed when the attack occurred Monday, with no planes operating and no passengers on site. It is the biggest attack on the airport in Haiti’s history. It occurred just hours after authorities ordered a nighttime curfew following an explosion of violence in which armed gang members overran the two biggest prisons and freed thousands of inmates over the weekend. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine claims it has sunk another Russian warship in the Black Sea using high-tech sea drones as Kyiv’s forces continue to take aim at targets deep behind the war’s front line. Russian authorities did not confirm the claim on Tuesday. The Ukrainian military intelligence agency said a special operations unit destroyed the large patrol ship Sergey Kotov overnight with Magura V5 uncrewed vessels. They are designed and built in Ukraine and laden with explosives. The patrol ship, which Ukraine said was hit near the Kerch Strait, reportedly can carry cruise missiles and around 60 crew. The Ukrainian claim could not immediately be independently verified. Federal regulators say they have found multiple instances in which Boeing and its key supplier lack adequate measures to control for quality in the manufacturing of jetliners. The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that it found problems with parts handling and storage, and other areas. The FAA says it has given Boeing and supplier Spirit AeroSystems a summary of findings from a six-week audit. But the agency isn't immediately making details of its findings public. The FAA has stepped up its scrutiny of Boeing since Jan. 5, when a panel blew off a Boeing 737 Max 9 over Oregon. NEW YORK (AP) — The Biden administration is moving to cap credit card late fees at $8. It's the latest effort in the White House push to end what it has called “junk fees” and is a move that regulators say will save Americans up to $10 billion a year. The average credit card late fee is around $32, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. President Joe Biden plans to highlight the proposal along with other efforts to reduce costs to Americans at a meeting of his competition council on Tuesday. Biden is forming a new “strike force” to crack down on unfair pricing on things like groceries and prescription drugs. In other headlines: Supreme Court restores Trump to ballot, rejecting state attempts to ban him over Capitol attack. Settlement in Wisconsin fake elector case offers new details on the strategy by Trump lawyers. Former Trump CFO Allen Weisselberg admits to perjury and will not have to testify in hush-money trial. Pentagon leaker Jack Teixeira pleads guilty under a deal that calls for at least 11 years in prison. Russell Wilson will soon be sent packing by the Broncos, Jason Kelce retires after an illustrious 13-year career with the Eagles, the Bucks come back to beat the Clippers, Duke wins at North Carolina State and the Panthers beat the Rangers in New York. First over-the-counter birth control pill in US begins shipping to stores. American Airlines to buy 260 new planes from Boeing, Airbus and Embraer to meet growing demand. Apple fined nearly $2 billion by the European Union over music streaming competition. Girl Scouts were told to stop bracelet-making fundraiser for kids in Gaza. ORN Matthew Ehret show notes 10/10/22 90% of the land in Canada is owned by the British Crown. 25% of everything that comes in from the Crown Estate goes to King Charles III and family. Crown Agents was established in 1833. They control the energy and healthcare systems of the British Commonwealth, which encompasses 22% of global surface area. Hong Kong still participates in Commonwealth Institutions. Do Klaus Schwab people have control over the Crown? The oligarch's idea of what should be done has been infused into the ideals of morality. Does the WEF want to take over Russia? Dick Cheney wanted to destroy Russia as an entity. Russia is highly heterogenic. Oligarchs want to inflame tribal passions in Russia, leading to internal break up. We're trying to contain Russia and China. Brzezinski wanted to divide Russia into 12 microfederations. Same strategy to break up China. Did Putin just not want NATO on its border? He wanted a buffer to prevent the historical attacks on Russia. NATO missiles in Ukraine are only 7 minutes away from Moscow. Putin wanted to stop that threat. West wants to kill Putin and says it has encircled Russia. But Russia has advanced hypersonics, underwater drones, technology beyond what the west has. Do the oligarchs really want nuclear winter? Kerch Strait bridge was partially destroyed on Saturday. Underwater drone coincided with truck with explosives passing by on bridge. Zelensky calling for preemptive bombing of Russia. Russia realizes the existential threat and need to change strategy. Nazis have a strong presence in Ukraine. Maintained by propaganda over many years. Led to creation of Azof battalion. Putin's speech on 9/30/22 called the west satanic. Realizes the West is morally bankrupt and delusional. The US is failing - can't even overcome Syria. Russia is calling out the West for its uncomfortable history. Opium wars in China, terror in Vietnam. Trying to wipe out entire civilizations. Transhumanism, destroying family structure. Trauma in Korea, Japan, Germany, Iraq from unnecessary bombing. Japan is still a client of the West. As is Germany. Can be a homosexual in Russia. But can't promote it. How about bioweapons in Ukraine? At least 46 labs. Created after Cheney's 2004 Project Bioshield Act which was enacted after fake anthrax attack. Georgia and Ukraine chosen to host facilities. Obama created additional labs. China and Russia know the western banking system is set to blow, and then there will be a set of blows on the west's enemies. Were the scenes of Chinese suddenly collapsing at the start of the pandemic faked? Matthew says no, that something was targeting them. Gazprom said it could stabilize pressure in at least one of the Nordstream lines. Some Brits say they will try to go entire winter without heat because energy is so expensive. What happens if Brazil's Bolsanaro loses to the leftist candidate? Brazil is only 3% of GDP of the BRICS. Has been a supporter of BRICS development bank. Into big infrastructure projects. Is the end goal of the Greens nuclear power? They would prefer it would never have been discovered, nor electricity. But they will coopt and try to use it for themselves and not have it accessible to the masses. Are Russians trying to flee their country so they don't have to fight? More so in Moscow and cosmopolitan cities, but media overstates it. Western colonists still control sectors of banking. Russian media allows some opposition views. It has a population of over 2 million people and its surface area is comparable to that of Belgium at over 10,000 square miles. To the east, it is separated from the Russian Tamar Peninsula by the Kerch Strait. According to a 2014 census carried out by Russia, 59% of Crimeans identify as Russian, compared to just 22% of Ukrainians. The rest of the population belong to the nomadic Turkish-speaking community of Tatar Muslims, who Stalin deported en masse in 1944. What does this mean, and what are the possible implications if escalation continues? Dennis Voznesenski, Grains & Oilseeds analyst, and Michael Every, Global Strategist for Economics and Markets, delve into the details.

Show Notes Ukrainian parliamentary election https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Ukrainian_parliamentary_election Genuinely unprecedented and unique election: - First ever in Ukrainian history since independence to have a majority - 60% of new members of parliament will be first time politicians - major parties took enormous hits across the board (https://www.rferl.org/a/zelenskiy-on-course-for-majority-in-parliament/30069728.html) What's their deal? Zelensky is so new to politics it's hard to box him under any umbrella other than extreme reforms. His party says their ideology is libertarianism and are generally pro strengthening EU ties. Some highlights currently on the table from their manifesto: Replacing their hybrid FPTP and party list system with party lists only (this has actually now happened) A mechanism to recall members of parliament via no-confidence from voters Some currently not well defined direct democracy measures "re-launch relations with Ukraine's closest neighbors in the West" Reform of law enforcement agencies Which seems to be a mix of reducing regulation on financial crimes but also holding police officers to account... and also gun rights? A lot of "audits" into how almost everything works Very new party There are concerns of many of the new party MPs being... well of mixed quality and lacking due diligence in candidate selection. However, the election went well by recent Ukranian standards from a democratic perspective. "votes did not go towards the “lesser evil” as before; voting for rather than against something. This is a rare achievement in the region and an essential shift for the country’s democracy towards maturity." http://neweasterneurope.eu/2019/07/24/the-new-ukrainian-parliament-at-first-glance/ Honourable mention https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_(Ukrainian_political_party) Russian Tensions The security service said it detained the Russian tanker in a Ukrainian port on Wednesday 24th of July. Authorities said the tanker was involved in blocking Ukrainian vessels from sailing through the Kerch Strait in November. Russia alleged the vessels breached its territorial waters. The Ukrainian Security Service, also known as SBU, is still led by an ally of Ukraine’s former president, Petro Poroshenko, The 10-member crew of the Russia’s tanker was allowed to disembark and leave Ukraine since they were not involved in November’s incident, Russian human rights ombudswoman Tatyana Moskalkova said. Russian ships fired on and seized the Ukrainian vessels on Nov. 25 in the Kerch Strait, located between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Ukraine has insisted the vessels were in international waters when Russia intercepted them. https://apnews.com/e212d39680f349a0b8e787d4f45ad250

Key factors leading to this incident were the legal status of Crimea, the Sea of Azov, Russian-Ukrainian maritime interactions in the region, and Russia's attempts to consolidate control over the area. I will also provide some commentary on possible motivations or thoughts (on the parts of both the Russian and Ukrainian leadership) which caused the Russian and Ukrainian ships to confront each other. This week, Russia and Ukraine went at it in the Kerch Strait, which separates the Black Sea from the Sea of Azov. It's the latest salvo in Russia's (not-so-secret) war against Ukraine and its eastern provinces, and it's the latest thing that has the world talking about Vladimir Putin's lawlessness in his back yard. To understand it all, Benjamin Wittes spoke today with Alina Polyakova of the Foreign Policy program at Brookings, and Scott Anderson of Lawfare and the Governance Studies program at Brookings. They talked about what happened this week, the international law implications, and the domestic politics in both Ukraine and Russia.
