PHIL A very good morning to you all! You're listening to Colourful Radio and I'm Phil Woodford in London introducing our weekly news review show, Five in the Eye. It's where we look back at everything that's gone over the past seven days, pick the stuff that interests us and give it a once-over. This is episode 0449, which will excite my co-host, as it's a PRIME number. MICHAEL Yes, indeed! This is an excited Michael Ohajuru joining Phil via Zoom for this prime number show and revealing we have a very special guest joining us. He's an old friend from my home city of Liverpool. It's Mr Mark Dalgliesh. Welcome to Five in the Eye, Mark! MARK Thanks, Michael. Hello, Phil. It's great to be here on the show. So what's our top story going to be today? Well, the talk at the recent security summit in Germany was of a ‘lose-lose' scenario in international relations. Former Labour Minister David Miliband described the meeting as ‘the conference of a disordered world'. How worried should we be? PHIL What's story number two? Well, it's Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. He's in hot water over his supposedly woke inclinations. Not only did he rename London Overground lines with monikers such as Windrush and Suffragette, but he's shortlisting what some claim are ‘anti-British' sculptures for the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. MICHAEL We love something controversial on Five in the Eye, so why not the claim that men and women's brains are different? Boffins at Stanford University in the USA say they've found evidence that some of us are sugar and spice and all things nice, while others are made of snips and snails and puppy-dog tails! That's story number three. MARK For our fourth story, cathedrals are under fire for allowing events such as silent discos to raise funds. Is nothing sacred any more? PHIL And finally, to wrap up the show, it's the Olympic showjumper who was horsing around recently, wearing just a ‘mankini' at an event near Sydney, Australia. MICHAEL We're all here in our mankinis today, so I don't see what this gentleman has done wrong! And that's this week's Five in the Eye! ++++

In episode 203 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with firefighter Dean Corney. Dean is also the co-founder of Walk & Talk 999, which is a men's walking group in the in the UK for any man in the emergency services to walk and talk about their mental health, if they want to, and be met with empathy, trust and understanding. The group was setup in 2018 by four women and two men, including Dean, who realised there weren't any support groups for firefighters specifically to talk about their mental health. On 21st September 2021, the group did their first ever walk round a local park near their station and 11 brave men turned up. Since then, the group has grown exponentially, with 13 walking groups now setup across the UK. Because of its success, Dean operates the group full-time such is the level of expansion that's taken place. The groups have now expanded to include any man from an emergency services background who can attend and they have had letters of praise from HRH Prince William, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and had support from celebrities like Dr Alex George and Joe Wickes. In this episode we discuss his journey into firefighting, the stress and strain that the job puts on men like him as well as the purpose it gives him when he has to save lives and the camaraderie amongst his fellow firefighters. We also discuss how, contrary to popular belief how the lionisation of firefighters from well-meaning friends, family or members of the public can actually put more pressure on men like him when it comes to disclosing when they are struggling with their mental health. For Dean's mental health, 11 years ago he struggled with depression which developed into an eating disorder and he lost a huge amount of weight in a short period of time. We discuss the stigma he faced in the job and outside the job which prevented him from addressing it, seeking support and recovering, the progress he has made since then and the role he holds in helping other men like him. Join 5x15 to hear Karen Armstrong on her powerful new book Sacred Nature - an urgent manifesto and a practical guide on how to rekindle our spiritual bond with nature, drawing on the wisdom of the world's religious traditions. She'll be in conversation with 5x15 co-founder Rosie Boycott. Armstrong is one of the world's leading commentators on religious affairs. She spent seven years as a Roman Catholic nun before going on to become an acclaimed writer and broadcaster. In Sacred Nature, Armstrong argues that if we want to avert environmental catastrophe, it is not enough to change our behaviour: we need to learn to think and feel differently about the natural world - to rekindle our spiritual bond with nature. For most of human history, and in almost all the world's cultures, nature was believed to be sacred, and our God or gods to be present everywhere in the natural world. When people in the West began to separate God and nature in modern times, it was not just a profound breach with thousands of years of accumulated wisdom: it also set in train the destruction of the natural world. Taking themes that have been central to the world's religious traditions - from gratitude and compassion to sacrifice and non-violence - Armstrong offers practical steps to help us develop a new mindset to reconnect with nature and rekindle our sense of the sacred. Sacred Nature reveals the most profound connections between humans and the natural world. It speaks to anyone interested in our relationship with nature, worried about the destruction of our environment, and searching for new ways of thinking to shape the action needed to save our planet. Karen Armstrong is one of the world's leading commentators on religious affairs. She spent seven years as a Roman Catholic nun but left her teaching order in 1969 to read English at St Anne's College, Oxford. In 1982, she became a full-time writer and broadcaster. She is the author of sixteen books and has been awarded with honours and prizes across the globe, including the British Academy's inaugural Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize for improving transcultural understanding in 2013. Rosie Boycott is a member of the House of Lords and has a long and distinguished career as a journalist, publisher and author, including having been the editor of several national newspapers in the UK. In 2008 she was appointed as Chair of the London Food Board to advise the Mayor of London on sustainable food policy implementation in the capital. In October 2016, the new Mayor of London Sadiq Khan asked Rosie to lead the development of a new London Food Strategy to help the food system to work better to meet the needs of everyone who lives and works in London. In 2018 Rosie became a member of the House of Lords after leaving the London Food board and she continues to write regularly and speak all over the world about the role of cities, and the importance of food in combating hunger and food insecurity, improving health, tackling childhood obesity and helping to reduce carbon emissions contributing to climate change. The hypocrisy is so incredibly prevalent today and the fact that people continue blindly following without recognizing how things have changed in just the last few weeks is stunning. As people demand NATO gets involved in Ukraine and people drape themselves in UN flags, it is clear that the modus operandi of the elite is to simply get people to support the "current thing." Uber Technologies Inc is a technology company that offers ride-hailing services to its platform users. The company uses its algorithms to connect passengers to their pool of registered Uber drivers to use their transportation services in exchange for payment. Today, Uber counts over 14 million trips each day in more than 60 countries. Uber have now also expanded to boat travel and Uber Eats food delivery services. One of the questions which has been posed over the years is whether drivers are self-employed or employees. The Supreme Court held that drivers must be treated as employees with holiday pay and minimum wage. This is important for anyone bringing a claim against Uber drivers, who would look to a claim against Uber as being vicariously liable for the actions of their drivers rather that pursuing claims against drivers directly. In London, Uber secured its right to continue operating after a Judge upheld its appeal against TfL. TfL had rejected Uber's application to be granted a new licence over safety concerns in 2017. One of the main concerns raised by TfL was a flaw in Uber's system that allowed unauthorised people to upload their photographs to legitimate drivers' accounts, which then allowed them to pick up passengers. This ‘flaw in the system' allowed Naveed Iqbal to use his brother's Uber login details to use the app as a driver. He was alleged to have sexually assaulted two women in Leeds in 2015. Both women have recently reached a five figure settlements with Uber, after Uber were found liable for the incidents as it had a duty of care to protect passengers. Iqbal lost an appeal in 2017 to keep his own private-hire licence when a crown court heard no charges had been brought, but a judge said he had carried out the attacks “on the balance of probabilities”. In 2018, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said TfL was "absolutely right" not to renew Uber licence but acknowledged the company had "made improvements". Alarmingly, that same year, more than 3,000 Uber passengers and drivers reported sexual assaults. The ‘improvements' in Uber's way of handling the widespread problem may have been triggered by the accusation Uber faced in the US, trying to force women who say they were sexually assaulted by drivers to resolve their claims behind closed doors through arbitration rather than in courts. Similarly, Uber was fined $59m (£43m) for refusing to disclose details of more than 1,200 alleged victims of sexual assault involving its drivers in California between 2017 and 2019, justifying it would be a ‘shocking violation of privacy' for victims. The California Public Utility Commission (CPUC), which imposed the fine, said it did not require a public disclosure of the information, and the details of individual cases would have been kept private. In July 2021, Uber has agreed to pay a reduced fine of $9 million to the California Public Utilities Commission. Uber will now provide anonymised data about the assaults to the Commission. With the aim of ‘standing with survivors', Uber voluntarily published the US Safety report that discusses safety issues. They claim they understand that business leaders such as Uber have a unique opportunity to address the widespread problem of sexual assault and harassment, not only by acknowledging and assessing the issue but also by responding appropriately when incidents occur. “Uber has emerged as a leading partner in standing against sexual assault – not just through accountability and transparency, but also by supporting survivors, eliminating barriers to reporting, and taking steps to prevent violence and harassment. We call on other companies to follow Uber's lead by partnering with anti-violence organizations and releasing their own reports.” - Cindy Southworth, Executive Director, National Network to End Domestic Violence The safety team at Uber has tripled since 2017 and there are more than 300 professionals now dedicated to safety. Uber has been testing different features and reports various improvements: Allowing riders to verify their driver with secure PIN code Enabling for a text message to directly be sent to 911 operators (in the US) and report safety incidents to Uber before the trip is even over. Improvement of drivers' background checks and screenings Feature ‘share my trip'/ ‘follow my ride Sexual assault claims have not just been limited to Uber. Lyft was also sued by 19 women in December 2019. The platform has been accused as not doing enough to prevent sexual assaults by drivers on the platform, and not investigating complaints properly. Since March, the two ride-hailing firms agreed they will put aside competition and partner to share data on drivers who have been banned from their platforms in the US for serious safety incidents, including sexual assault and physical assaults resulting in a fatality. However, the lack of comprehensive background checks coupled with inadequate investigation of customer complaints involving sexually inappropriate behaviour by drivers still puts thousands of men and women at risk. Only in June 2021, did a video surfaced of a woman in Australia who filmed her uber driver relentlessly pestering her for sex. Statistics obtained by The Sun revealed Uber drivers were accused of 32 rapes and sex attacks on London passengers over the past year, this is equal to one every 11 days. The figures represent more than a fifth of all claims against taxi and car-hire drivers filed to 14 UK police forces last year, which totalled at 154 allegations including attacks in minicabs and chauffeur vehicles As many of the cases brought forward have been settled behind closed doors, many consumers continue to use such services with no knowledge of the potential dangers. We would expect as the consumer that these individuals have been through an extensive vetting process. We encourage anyone who has concerns about sexual abuse to get in touch. Ross Phillips from the not-for-profit group the Cross River Partnership discusses the new ULEZ expansion in the city, how it works, why it's needed, and how Londoners can live with it. The city's pollution charge zone officially became 18 times bigger on Monday, in a bid to improve air quality across the capital. The Ultra-Low-Emission-Zone, also called ‘ULEZ', now extends out to the North and South circular roads. It means a charge of £12.50 a day for travelling through the zone, which affects drivers whose cars or vans don't meet the minimum emissions standards. The mayor of London Sadiq Khan says it will cut the amount of carbon being emitted by more than 100 tonnes - equivalent to about 60,000 vehicles being taken off the roads. London will return to a strict lockdown this week, after coronavirus cases soared in the British capital, UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said Monday.Hancock said London will be moved from England's Tier 2 "high alert" local restrictions to the "very high" Tier 3 on Wednesday morning at 12:00 a.m., along with nearby areas in south and west Essex, and south Hertfordshire.Under the highest restriction level, all hospitality venues including pubs, cafes and restaurants will close except for takeout and delivery.People should avoid travelling outside their area and reduce the number of journeys they make wherever possible."Over the last three weeks we've seen very sharp exponential rises in the virus across London, Kent, parts of Essex and Hertfordshire," said the health secretary. In response to surging cases in London, the UK government is taking drastic action to contain the spread of the virus.Residents in London are already unable to meet people from other households indoors, and will now not be able to meet in private gardens or at most outdoor venues. They may meet up to six people outside at parks, public gardens or sports facilities. Retailers will be able to stay open."We do not know the extent to which this is because of the new variant, but no matter its cause, we have to take swift and decisive action, which unfortunately, is absolutely essential to control this deadly disease while the vaccines roll out," Hancock said Monday. He said that in some areas, the doubling time for cases is now around every seven days, and that rates were rising not just among schoolchildren, "but in all age groups including the over 60s."Hospitals in London, Essex and Kent are already under pressure and could quickly be "overwhelmed" without action, he added.Hancock said taking early actions that are "not necessarily easy, but are effective" was vital to prevent longer lasting damage, adding that community testing would also be extended."I know the steps are hard, but we must not waver as we enter the final stretch, so that when we look back on this time of crisis, we can all say that we played our part," he added.London joins regions including much of northern and central England, Kent in the southeast, and Bristol in the southwest in Tier 3.However, people living in the UK will be allowed to form a "Christmas bubble" of up to three households between December 23 and 27. Households can only be in one bubble and may not switch.Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the decision was "incredibly disappointing for businesses, who have suffered so much already," but said it was "clear that the virus is accelerating" and lives were at risk."It would be such a tragedy to lose even more people to this disease when the vaccine is now being rolled out across our city," he said."We know from bitter experience that when cases start to rise quickly, it's much better to act early, rather than too late. This is how we can avoid even tougher restrictions, for longer, further down the road."Hancock also said that a new variant of Covid-19 had been identified in the southeast of England. The UK's Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty, said Monday it was unclear whether the new variant had contributed to the surge in cases. Experts in the genetics of viruses said it not unexpected that mutation would arise and noted many had already been seen and had not significantly affected the spread or effects of the virus on people."I must stress at this point that there is currently nothing to suggest that this variant is more likely to cause serious disease, and the latest clinical advice is that it's highly unlikely that this mutation would fail to respond to a vaccine," Hancock said Monday.Whitty, speaking later at a joint news conference, also stressed that there was no evidence that the new variant was more dangerous than the previous one. He also said that coronavirus tests had proven effective against the variant. The British health secretary...

A review is happening right now to see whether the UK should start urging the public to wear face masks. Some countries have already changed their guidance - in America, it's recommended people wear cloth face masks when outside their homes. And the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has called for people to wear non-medical face masks or coverings like scarves or bandanas when travelling. The battle plan stops short of predicting how many people would be infected in an epidemic in the UK. Worst case scenario modelling suggests 80% of people can become infected when there is a new virus like this. But officials believe it will not be this high. # bbc news uk-51718917 #Coronavirus The evidence suggests just over half of people infected develop symptoms and 1% of those infected could die. The elderly and those with existing health conditions are the most at risk. If there is a widespread transmission - which seems highly likely at this stage - it could take two or three months to peak. The peak would last two or three weeks and about 50% of people who become infected could become infected in those peak weeks. There would then be a period of two or three months of declining cases, although the battle plan acknowledges there could be multiple waves. The government is likely to use its most drastic measures at its disposal just ahead of the peak in an attempt to flatten it. Meanwhile, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has ordered Treasury officials to work up plans to support the public health response, businesses and the economy in his Budget on 11 March. Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth has said Labour will seek to work "constructively" with the government on the issue of coronavirus. However, he has called for emergency legislation to ensure those working in the gig economy are guaranteed sick pay, and for the government to provide emergency funding to support the NHS through the outbreak. Mr Hancock told MPs that people who needed to self-isolate to protect others were entitled to sick pay. He added that resources had been increased to the NHS, but did not rule out the government taking such action if needed. In other developments: European markets have climbed for a second day after fears over coronavirus affected shares, and Bank of England governor Mark Carney said policymakers stand ready to support the British economy Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said there were currently no plans to postpone the London Marathon nor to restrict public transport England's Six Nations game against Wales on Saturday and Scotland's against France on Sunday will go ahead, however England prop Mako Vunipola has gone into self-isolation as a coronavirus precaution and will not join the squad G7 finance ministers have said they will use "all appropriate policy tools" to tackle the economic impact of the virus The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games could be postponed to the end of the year, according to the country's Olympic minister As of Tuesday morning, the Department of Health said 13,911 people had been tested in the UK, of which 13,860 were negative. The outbreak originated in China's Hubei province in December before spreading globally. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan unveils a statue commemorating Millicent Fawcett's courage in Parliament Square.  This is the first time a woman is honoured in the square, while 11 other men in bronze already stand there. We met with London’s Deputy Mayor for Culture Justine Simons to ask if the commemoration was too little, too late. Interview in English.  More info www.culturealt.com

The James Comey Pratfall. In his highly-anticipated Congressional testimony, the fired FBI Director dashes the hopes of Trump critics while managing to out himself as a "leaker." A truly impressive display of Deep State malfeasance. We study the various self-serving games played by Comey and marvel at his "sour grapes" persona. And we ask: Where is Comey's leaked memo right now? Where is Daniel Richman? They both seem to have gone missing. Meanwhile, John McCain embarrasses himself with his doddering, confused questions from the Senate panel, then goes on to defend embattled Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. Senescence? It seems President Trump keeps on mowing through the Deep Staters, one by one, in spite of their best efforts to remove him from office. Surprisingly, by firing Comey, Trump has created some unforeseen, uncomfortable exposures in the Beltway. The second of four episodes in our series about Patrik Schumacher, Director of Zaha Hadid Architects. Tim and Joe review and critique the media responses to Patrik’s controversial presentation about housing at the World Architecture Festival in November 2016. Two of these articles, by the Guardian’s Oliver Wainwright and architectural writer Phineas Harper, are presented for extended criticism. We had a little too much fun with this one. Topics include: Responses from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Zaha Hadid Architects, protestors, and supporters (sort of) Extended critique of Oliver Wainwright’s article in The Guardian: Did Zaha Hadid “dismiss” Patrik’s theoretical work in parametricism? Gurgaon – a mostly private city in India Are “thought experiments” valid and meaningful? The housing crisis can be explained in three words: Great Crested Newts Noam Chomsky on anarcho-capitalism A new off-Broadway play, “Syndicalism in One Act” Extended critique of Phineas Harper’s article in Dezeen: What social justice warriors and the alt-right have in common Government solutions are the simple solutions. Market solutions require more complex thinking. Child labor Poverty and welfare Neoliberalism, Thatcherism, and Hayek-ianism Adam Smith was NOT the godfather of the free market. More like the weird uncle. The intern architect who predicted the 2008 financial crisis View full show notes at anarchitecturepodcast.com/ana010.----more---- Intro Media Maelstrom Discussion How have Patrik’s libertarian ideas been perceived and communicated in the mainstream media? Arch Daily chose not to cover the speech because of boos. Boo-hoo. London Evening Standard – response from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan Did Patrik say anything about diversity? Is evicting tenants at the end of a lease term “social cleansing?” City center affordability through new forms of co-housing Replace social housing subsidies with cash handouts Building more housing with minimum space standards does not create more affordable housing. Zaha Hadid Architects press release Irrelevant virtue signaling Was this a smart response? Press release was not approved by directors Protestors  – The fascist (who wants to get rid of government) Supportive articles – guarded responses “Zaha Hadid’s successor: scrap art schools, privatise cities and bin social housing” by Oliver Wainwright in The Guardian, November 24, 2016 Comprehensive article, but not unbiased journalism Parametric tuxedo The Trump of architecture – says who? Facebook rants A conspiracy theorist Patrik’s political views are separate from the practice Patrik has only “unleashed” his views following Zaha Hadid’s death – a despicable argument Patrik has published articles expressing these views since 2012. Did Zaha Hadid “dismiss” Patrik’s theoretical work in parametricism? W magazine article – history of busting his chops “Parametricism” has been part of the branding and messaging of Zaha Hadid Architects. The Guardian’s Architecture and Design Critic has used “parametric” to describe Zaha Hadid’s work. The well has been poisoned, time to march out the libertarians Tom Woods, Peter Schiff, David Stockman Three claps for mentioning libertarians Fundamental faith in the market – oversimplification Anarcho-capitalism can not solve everything The nirvana fallacy Private solutions – Pocket living, The Collective, eliminating space standards, AirBnb, Liberland, free private cities Gurgaon – a mostly private city in India Gurgaon has not solved inequality in India. Fail. Inequality is not the best metric to use. Look at economic progress for the poor instead. Environmental damage Sewage treatment was supposed to be provided by a local governmental agency and they failed to provide it. Merely “thought experiments” Valid hypotheses about possible future opportunities Zaha Hadid was a “paper architect” for years before a building commission. Were these designs “merely” thought experiments? Is Patrik uncertain of what he’s saying? “Post-truth” – is Patrik appealing to emotion? 600,000 plots of land with planning permission. Land-banking Is this a symptom of a property bubble? The housing crisis can be explained in three words: Great Crested Newts Permitted housing land is worth 300x the value of agricultural land. “Getting planning permission isn’t the issue” – really? Builders hoarding land to keep home prices high – really? Housing supply is up 52% over three years. “Implementable planning consent” and “conditions” Shortages of labor and material Pre-commencement conditions Planning permission is not implementable planning consent Examples of pre-commencement conditions holding up construction of “permitted” housing units: Playground details Services by other vendors Documentation not under purview of planning department Full details of solar panels, utility boxes, windows and doors, electric car charging ports Locations of public art Bat boxes Great Crested Newts Number of permits granted is not evidence of a simple permitting process Permitting process can take 5 years Small homebuilders in UK have decreased from 9000 to 3000 Large foreign builders don’t have necessary local connections to enter market If Oliver Wainwright wants buildable land to get cheaper, he should want MORE land speculators to flood the market with land they’ve permitted Noam Chomsky on anarcho-capitalism Syndicalism in One Act Employers advance wages to employees ahead of revenues Two people contracting for employment is a “sick joke” – really? Are negotiations between unequal parties invalid? Chomsky agrees with anarcho-capitalists on a whole range of issues Chomsky: “The burden of proof is always on those who argue that authority and domination are necessary.” “It is time to stop listening to Patrik Schumacher” by Phineas Harper, published in Dezeen, November 28, 2016 Tolerance is bad – really? Herbert Marcuse – “Repressive Tolerance” What do social justice warriors and the alt-right have in common? Shutting down discussion may be justifiable, but is not productive “Total faith in the market to solve all conceivable problems” – Nirvana fallacy Hayekian economics distorted to grotesque absurdity – ignores 150 year school of thought Hayek – a dog-whistle to anti-capitalists Margaret Thatcher – some good and some bad If you want nuance, give him more time to talk Patrik is not responsible for Joe’s ignorance Katie Hopkins If you’re not talking about government solutions, you’re not talking about solutions at all. Child labor The best time to start working is when you’re a teenager A fantasy that complex problems have simple solutions. Government solutions are the simple solutions. Market solutions require more complex thinking. Poverty and welfare Redistributive welfare payments have not solved poverty Grit A freer market would create more opportunities for everyone Charity can be voluntary Government gives people a false sense of charity Markets make things cheaper (like Walmart) Neoliberalism Associated with Thatcherism Associated with government interventions supporting businesses. This is not libertarianism. “A fawning architectural press” – really? I mean, really?! Press has attacked Zaha Hadid Architects in the past. Phineas Harper on Ben Clark on Adam Smith Appeal to authority – Ben Clark’s “Light Bulb” award Appeal to authority inside an appeal to authority Adam Smith was NOT the godfather of the free market Murray Rothbard’s critique of Adam Smith Perhaps Ben Clark is economically illiterate Owen Hatherly on unconstrained developers Appeal to authority A self-professed communist. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Retail parks, car parks, and shopping malls aren’t public spaces? What’s wrong with a prepackaged, spoon-fed suburban lifestyle? Many developments do incorporate green space and public amenities “Given nearly unlimited space” not a realistic scenario Markets can never make mistakes? Not true. Markets have natural feedback mechanisms to correct mistakes Widespread market failure is usually due to governmental interference in self-correcting markets 2008 financial crisis resulted from governmental policies instigating, exacerbating, and prolonging market imbalances The intern architect who predicted the 2008 financial crisis Schumacher is ADAMANT! …yet uncertain? We all share the same end goal of providing housing for everyone, but disagree on the means of achieving that end. LEAKED: Extraordinary Schumacher email reveals ZHA fracture by Richard Waite in Architect’s Journal, January 5, 2017. Patrik’s leaked email stating that the ZHA letter was not approved by the firm’s directors. Dezeen Reader Comments, November 22, 2016. Somewhat supportive articles: Patrik Schumacher has provided a necessary challenge to housing by Paul Finch in the Architect’s Journal, November 22, 2016. Balanced critique. We need more Schumachers prepared to shake up consensus thinking by Austin Williams in Dezeen, December 1, 2016. Argues against censoring Patrik. Patrik Schumacher is right to oppose regulations, says architect-turned-developer Roger Zogolovitch by Amy Frearson in Dezeen, November 29, 2016. Sympathizes with suggestions to reform planning standards. How Patrik Schumacher Will Keep Zaha Hadid’s Name On Top by Fred A. Bernstein in W magazine, November 3, 2016. Excellent article, published a month before Patrik’s WAF housing presentation, about Patrik’s history with Zaha Hadid and vision for Zaha Hadid Architects under his leadership. Referenced by Oliver Wainwright to suggest Zaha “dismissed” Patrik’s work in architectural theory, specifically parametricism. Zaha Hadid did not dismiss parametricism, according to… Oliver Wainwright: Zaha Hadid: creator of ambitious wonders – and a fair share of blundersby Oliver Wainwright in the Guardian, March 31, 2016. Describes Zaha as “Creator of an entire “parametric” universe beyond buildings” Zaha Hadid beyond buildings: architect launches new design gallery by Oliver Wainwright in the Guardian, May 23, 2013. Describes gallery exhibits as parametric: “Everything is taut and rippling, squeezed and clenched, like it’s spent too long working out in the parametric gym.” Zaha Hadid Architects 2014 promotional video – Uses the term “parametricism” to describe ZHA’s work and argues for it’s relevance to contemporary society, consistent with Patrik’s theoretical work. Land Banking: Revealed: housebuilders sitting on 600,000 plots of land by Graham Ruddick in the Guardian, December 30, 2015. Britain has enough land to solve the housing crisis – it’s just being hoarded by Oliver Wainwright in The Guardian, January 31, 2017 Land banking: what’s the story? (part 1) by Pete Jefferys at Shelter.org, December 14, 2016. Includes a reader comment by planner Helen Howie noting 5 years to achieve implementable planning consent. New home planning ‘permissions’ up – but system remains a constraint by the Home Builders Federation, January 3, 2017 Pre-Commencement Conditions – White paper by the Home Builders Federation Remove barriers and SMEs could deliver 25k more homes a year by the Home Builders Federation, January 15, 2017. Analyzes decline of small and medium home builders (80% decline over the past 25 years) Noam Chomsky on Anarcho-Capitalism Herbert Marcuse, the godfather of modern identity politics at Fee.org. Note, Marcuse’s relationship to Nazi propagandist Martin Heidegger should not be construed to imply that Marcuse (who was Jewish), was a Nazi sympathizer. But the collectivism of modern identity politics, whether in the form of social justice or the alt-right, shares a common root with the collectivist dogma that was central to Nazism. Marcuse was influential in propagating this collectivist thought into its modern form. Wolfson Economics Prize 2017; Topic: WHO WILL BUILD THE ROADS???
