Dawn Porter was reluctant to call herself a Director, even after her movie premiered at Sundance and got picked up by HBO. Today her award-winning documentaries (John Lewis: Good Trouble, The Way I See It) are an invaluable addition to the historical record, but her humility keeps her from calling herself an activist. In this episode, we're using Dawn's expertise – she was once a practicing attorney – to renegotiate the contracts that keep women from assuming titles we don't think we're qualified for, even when we have more than enough on our resumes. Dawn takes us through her incredible journey from comfortable DC lawyer to celebrated documentarian, covering topics such as: The importance of advocating for yourself with as much passion as you advocate for others How to free yourself from the traps of structure and comfort to take on your next, great adventure How to use mistakes as stepping stones to your next success Learning how to get comfortable with discomfort Stepping into your power and your title as a woman in charge Acknowledging the danger of “if it ain't broke, don't fix it,” because sometimes breaking things is the first step to your next great adventure. In Dawn's case, it led her to flying on with Oprah in her private jet to meet Harry (yes, that Harry)OUR GUEST: Dawn Porter is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Her latest film, The Lady Bird Diaries - about first lady Lady Bird Johnson, just premiered at SXSW. She has had a busy decade - she made a great ESPN documentary series 37 Words about Title IX, the civil rights legislation that gave women the equal opportunity to play sports, and her mental health series The Me You Can't See, which she made with Oprah and Prince Harry, premiered on Apple TV. You may also have seen her films John Lewis: Good Trouble about the legendary Congressman and Civil Rights leader or The Way I See It, about photojournalist Pete Souza, who served as Chief Official White House photographer for President Barack Obama.Make sure to watch Dawn's latest film The Lady Bird Diaries, when it airs on Paramount Plus and Showtime this fall. This episode of our What If Series asks; what if we looked inward to discover what makes us tick, who are the voices shaping us, and why are we choosing them? We also consider the question; who's the most important person in your life? The answers most people give are what you'd expect, but our guest this week proposes that we dig deeper to find a different answer that will ultimately change how we approach life.  Our guest, Dr. Corey Yeager, is a psychotherapist for the Detroit Pistons, a life coach, and an author. He appeared in the documentary, The Me You Can't See, by Oprah and Prince Harry, and recently released a book that poses 40 questions we should be asking ourselves as we create a roadmap to discover our purpose and explore who we want to become.   In this episode Dr. Corey and Jen discuss: Becoming a psychotherapist for NBA players How self talk affects our outlook Why asking intentional big questions can reframe our life How the timing is now for a love affair with yourself The most important conversation you can have is the one with yourself. Dr. Corey gives us the guidance and encouragement to do just that. Join Jen and Dr. Corey in an insightful discussion of self love, self talk, and staying curious.    * * * Thank you to our sponsors! They would tell you, ‘I'm not a genius. I'm not a genius.' But if someone says, ‘No. Be still. Think through this. Yes, you do have a genius. What is it?' If you had to sit with that and play with that and grind with that, it would produce ... And actually not just the answer. The answer is not the key. The process towards the answer. The things that you play with, that you work through, that you cried through, that you laugh about. That is what we want more of." - Dr. Corey Yeager “I believe that at about nine, 10, 11, up into the 12, 13 year old range, we are handed a set of values. Our people around us, my grandparents, my mom, dad, my brother, they handed me a set of values. I didn't really get much say in it. They handed them to me and I agreed with it because I love my people. So then after I'm 12, 13, 14 years old, I move into the world holding those values, moving through the world with those values and never really re-engaging or checking in with myself to say, does that still work for me?.” - Dr. Corey Yeager “Discomfort should be an indicator that I'm growing into something that is quite important. So I think this indicator is something that will give us a signal.” - Dr. Corey Yeager “I submit that it is time for us to have a love affair with ourselves. I need to love me. And I'm glad my wife loves me and I'm glad my mama loves me and my kids love me. I'm glad, Jen, that they love me. But the most important love that I'm going to have is mine. If you don't know yourself, it's very hard to love yourself.” - Dr. Corey Yeager “So instead of using jealousy and just letting it sit, how about if we looked at those jealous moments, understood it as desire, and allowed that to become a GPS that told us where we wanted to head.” - Dr. Corey Yeager “We all hold the answers to everything we need. Everything that happens in my life today, I am fully equipped for. Anything that occurs, I'm fully equipped for, for this moment. And if we trust that, if we understand our lives as such, then we can move with confidence.” - Dr. Corey Yeager Guest's LinksDr. Corey Yeager Website Dr. Corey's Facebook Dr. Corey's Twitter Dr. Corey's Instagram   Resources Mentioned in This Episode How Am I Doing: 40 Conversations to Have with Yourself The Me You Can't See   Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 7 We'll have episodes out for the next two weeks and will be off December 24th and 31st for the holiday. My dog has been doing great at the dog park. We've both been watching Wednesday and love it. Chandra's mom got covid but she's on the mend. Royals: Minutes 7:00 to 35 Will and Kate got booed at the Celtics game when they were shown on the Jumbotron. A Black reverend mentioned the legacy of colonialism and racism at one of their events, which the British tabloids saw as an attack on Will and Kate.  Before this tour we had so many lead-up stories hyping what a big deal it would be and how it was William's Super Bowl moment. We wonder why they made this comparison, which makes no sense. Chandra thinks it's because Harry went to the Super Bowl. We also heard that the Earthshot Awards would be better than the Ripple of Hope awards, which are honoring the Sussexes. The NY Times quoted a Boston University historian who said that the Waleses need to “maintain a sense of relevance” and “justify their existence.” Meghan did a speech in Indianapolis at a fundraising dinner for the Women's Fund of Central Indiana. It had a media blackout so all we got was a photo and some eyewitness accounts. She also helped serve Thanksgiving lunch for the Downtown Women's Center in LA and donated 500 purses to her British charity, Smart Works. We got a teaser for Harry and Meghan's Netflix docuseries. It looks amazing and we're glad it's just called Harry and Meghan. We got new photos of them in the trailer and some brief statements. It looks like it has the same energy as Harry's Apple series, The Me You Can't See. We remember some of the scary things that have happened to Meghan when she was in the UK. The biggest story this week is about an activist named Ngozi Fulani who was invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace held by Camilla. Fulani founded Sistah Space, which supports African and Caribbean heritage women affected by domestic violence. While at the event, Fulani was accosted by one of Camilla's aides named Lady Susan Hussey, who touched her hair, repeatedly asked her where she was from as if she didn't belong, and wouldn't accept her answer that she was a British national. Hussey resigned after this and Camilla's office issued a statement calling this “unacceptable and deeply regrettable” and claiming they reached out to Fulani, but that was not true. Fulani has said in interviews that we shouldn't vilify Hussey and that she's an elder, but that's not an excuse for racism. She also said the palace is taking the easy way out by letting Hussey resign. Fulani would be happy to hold diversity training for the palace. Hussey is Prince William's godmother and said to have been Queen Elizabeth's favorite lady-in-waiting. She's 83 years old and Charles personally asked her to stay on after the Queen passed. She's also quoted by Tom Bower in his Revenge book saying that the Sussexes would “end in tears.” The royal family knows who she is and gave her a platform. At least two other women were with Fulani when this happened. One was Mandu Reid, Leader of The British Women's Equality Party. She did an interview where she described what happened. Reid said that this shows how the royal family needs to acknowledge institutional racism and commit to changing the culture. I play a segment from her interview where she explained how this corroborates Harry and Meghan's account. On one hand it's funny to see the royals expose themselves yet again, but on the other we feel terribly for Fulani and others who have had to deal with this racism. We're excited for Harry and Meghan's docuseries and Harry's memoir. Comments of the Week: Minutes 35:00 to end My comment of the week is from SideEye on the post about Camilla's staffer being racist. Chandra talks about people questioning where she's from. Chandra's comment of the week is from ElleV on the post about the White House Christmas decorations. Thanks for listening bitches!

As per a new biography by British broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, the queen wanted Meghan to 'feel welcome' in the royal family. She also said that Meghan could 'carry on being an actress' if she liked. However, Queen Elizabeth II was 'more concerned for Harry's well-being' than their 'television nonsense' including the couple's interview with Oprah Winfrey. As quoted by Daily Mail, an excerpt of the upcoming biography said the queen's comment on Harry, being 'a little over-in-love', 'was as far as she came – to my knowledge at least - to ever uttering a word against the new Duchess of Sussex'. When Prince Harry announced he was marrying Meghan, the late British monarch was 'really happy', according to the book, Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, that will be published in December. In this episode, I have a deeply powerful and inspiring conversation with Dr. Joanne Cacciatore (@grief_doctor), a grief educator, bereaved mother, tenured professor, best-selling author, and more. Dr. Jo started the first therapeutic carefarm in the world (@selah_carefarm) for traumatic grief which was recently featured on Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry's Apple TV docuseries, "The Me You Can't See."   Dr. Jo and I talk about both the subtle and more obvious ways American culture often marginalizes, invalidates, and oversimplifies grief and human suffering. We share our perspectives on what it means to live with and learn to carry grief in different seasons of life, and how we can responsibly work together to truly honor and hold space for the depth, breadth, and complexity of grief. Dr. Jo highlights some of her research findings that emphasize the unique role that animals can play in helping us navigate grief, and how we can learn from the quality of presence they offer. We also talk candidly about what it means to decolonize grief and trauma work. We also discuss how turning away from any kind suffering is not only unhelpful, but it also enables and perpetuates injustice. When we allow ourselves to feel the pain of another being, it offers an opportunity for deeper connection and an appreciation of our interconnectedness, without the kind of blaming and othering that hurts us all.   About Dr. Jo: Dr Jo is tenured research professor at Arizona State University, where she runs the graduate Certificate in Trauma and Bereavement, and also founded the MISS Foundation. Since 1996, she has worked with and counseled those affected by traumatic death, most often the deaths of a children. She started Selah Carefarm, based on a framework for incorporating 40 domestic and farm animals rescued from abuse, torture, neglect, and homelessness. Her best selling book, Bearing the Unbearable: Love, Loss, and the Heartbreaking Path of Grief, won the Indies Book of the Year Award and her most recent book of meditations, Grieving is Loving, was released in December of 2020. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 3:30 We were off last week due to technical issues. We'll have episodes out for the next two weeks and will be off August 28th. Due to the awards shows in September we may have less episodes next month.   Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez: Minutes 3:30 tp 9:30 When we were off Ben Affleck rubbed Jennifer Lopez's butt on a yacht just like on the Jenny From The Block video! Chandra was hoping for that and it happened I can't believe it. She has more parts of the video she wants replicated. Chandra loves this story and wants other people to enjoy it too.   Ben and Jen have been in Capri and they look like they're posing for an ad in some of the paparazzi photos. They look totally in love and happy. Jennifer is scheduled to appear at the Met Gala and we hope she brings Ben as her date! Ben has lost weight and he looks like he's dressing better. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about them. We hope Ben and J.Lo walk red carpets together. Ben looks happier because he doesn't have any responsibilities like he did with Jennifer Garner.   Royals: Minutes 9:30 to 19:45 Here's a link to the mailing list signup where you can get the top 8 stories about Prince Harry's upcoming memoir. We wonder how much dirt Harry will dish. Chandra says some of The Me You Can't See shocked her, particularly when Harry said there were parallels between his mother's experience and his. Meghan and Harry have called out the firm and we expect Harry to do that in his book too.   Duchess Meghan just had her 40th birthday on Wednesday and to celebrate she posted a cute video with Melissa McCarthy and posted a letter to the Archewell site encouraging people to devote 40 minutes to service. She emphasized that a lot of women have lost jobs due to the pandemic and encouraged people to look into mentoring. So many people offered their services and used her hashtag #40×40. Princess Eugenie, Adele, Amanda Gorman, Hillary Clinton and others have joined this initiative. We wonder if that's the office where Meghan works or if she was just filming there. We loved her setup including the little dog bed.   While the Cambridges have been on vacation the press has been going after Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Eugenie's husband, Jack Brooksbank, is a brand ambassador for Casamigos Tequila and he was seen on a yacht in Capri, Italy with other women. It looks like a work thing, but it also was bad optics for Jack. The woman who went topless gave an interview and she's hilarious. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Beatrice's husband, was seen walking in NY with his ex, Dara Huang. Dara and Edo have a five year-old son together so it could have been perfectly innocent, but some of their other circumstances are shady. They still work together and share an office building. We think the press is going after them because they're bored, but it also might be The Cambridges and/or Prince Charles giving the go-ahead. Chanrles has been trying to cut out the Yorks and both of his brothers' families. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about this.   Matt Damon: Minutes 19:45 to 23:30 Matt Damon is promoting the movie Stillwater. He told a story revealing that he realized just a few months ago that he should not use the anti-gay F word. In the first version he told a joke with the f-slur from his movie Stuck on You (2003) to his daughter. He tried to tell her it was funny but his daughter wrote him a treatise on not using it. In Damon's apology, he changed his story about telling the joke to his daughter and tried to claim he was educating her about it.   Comments of the week: Minutes 23:30 to end My comment of the week is from Ninks on the post about Destry Spielberg claiming she didn't benefit from nepotism.   Kaiser's comment of the week is from Tiffany on the post about Princess Charlene staying in South Africa until the end of October.   Thanks for listening bitches! Text us or leave us a voicemail at 434-218-3219.

There's a fierce search out there to get yourself, to know who you are and how you impact others. It's why assessments like the Myers-Briggs and the Enneagram are so popular. And how their language can become very personal and special to someone who uses it regularly. So, when I listened in on the first two episodes of "The Me You Can't See" , a new documentary on mental illness, produced by Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry, I thought about this search for ourselves. Prince Harry pointed out that with so many who've carried silent emotional pain for many years, the question isn't, "What's wrong with you, the question is -  what happened to you?” So today on SelfWork, sponsored by Athletic Greens, we're going to be talking about the frightening fact that perhaps you cannot see me – as the title of their extraordinary program reflects – but also about the fact that so many of us struggle to see ourselves. Because this is true:  You cannot see me, but perhaps neither can I. The listener email today is a very painful one from a young woman who was sexually abused in her past which was perpetrated by a family member, but who also found out that the same family member sexually abused her daughter. Her mother doesn't know – and she doesn't know whether to tell her or not. What would you say? Here are the questions I suggested she ask herself with a therapist: What do you hope to gain from telling your mother? Do you have any preconceptions about how your mother will respond? Are you counting on some kind of apology from your mom? How would you handle it if she says you and your daughter are lying? How will you handle your other family members knowing if your mother tells them and they “pick sides”? Do you think you're telling your mom as a substitute for being able to confront your dad? Did you think your mom knew? Does she have the capacity to admit that if she indeed did? Would you believe her answer? And the most important dynamic is: Don't revictimize yourself if you choose to confront. Or in any way. Introduction and Mare of Easttown (relatively spoiler free): Minutes 0 to 10:45 We'll have episodes for the next two weeks and will be off two weeks, on June 27th and the 4th of July. We both watched Mare of Easttown. I was surprised how much I like it since I don't normally like crime dramas. Chandra thought Kate did a great job but found her accent work inconsistent. We talk about our accents. I play a segment from Zoom where Ameerah, Lisa and Ashley talk about Mare of Easttown. We're glad that this series wasn't based on a book because the audience all experienced it together. This series reminded Chandra of The Killing except the showrunner screwed it up. Royals: Minutes 10:45 to 34:30 We found The Me You Can't See powerful and liked how informative and realistic it was. It helped me confront some of my prejudices against people with mental illness. Chandra mentions the man at the end of the series who benefitted from LSD therapy. We talk about the formerly homeless woman Oprah mentored. We give Oprah credit for leaving that part in the show. The royal commentators are using Harry's vulnerability to attack him. If Harry wasn't involved with this show not as many people would have watched it. Camila Tominey, who works for the Daily Telegraph, called Harry “smug” and “self pitying” and claimed his “spiteful rhetoric” was similar to Princess Diana's Bashir interview. Chandra says that the royal reporters are just going through the motions and that their reactions are rote. We heard sourced reactions from Prince Charles, who is “boiling with anger” and “torturted by Harry's digs” supposedly. Prince William is “disappointed and greatly concerned” about Harry, and The Queen is “absolutely gobsmacked” and “deeply upset.” Harry reportedly “lied” to The Queen about the subject of the show and told her it would be about veterans. It's possible he didn't update her when the focus changed. I play a segment from Zoom where Karen and Alnaaze talk about this. Chandra says that the British press didn't focus on Harry's quotes which were most damaging to the monarchy and press. Kate and William also went on a royal tour in Scotland. They did a lot of fun activities like go-karting, visiting their alma mater and watching Cruella. Will looked miserable while Kate was doing all the emotional work of trying to look happy and engaged. The reason they went to Scotland is to discourage Scottish Independence from the UK, which could be up for vote in 2022. William had a secret meeting with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Edinburgh. The tour's purpose was obvious and the Scottish press blasted them. We also got a bunch of embiggening pieces about Will and Kate. Katie Nichol called Kate “the “greatest asset” of the Royal family. Kate's uncle Gary Goldsmith told Closer magazine that Kate is a “brilliant arbiter.” I didn't realize that Kate's uncle thinks The Queen should step down so that William and Kate can rule, skipping Charles. William's PR is about how he's the future king doing it alone. We wonder why their messaging is so different. We talked in episode 82 about how The Queen has the ability to vet bills before they're passed. It's called “The Queen's Consent.” She used this to hide her wealth from the British public. Prince Charles abused this power to make it renters on his Duchy of Cornwall estate don't have the right to purchase their homes. Buckingham Palace used this law to be exempt from the Equality Act, which prohibits discrimination in employment. The Palace refused to allow the government to certify the law before they were exempt from it, essentially holding it hostage. Buckingham Palace had explicit racist hiring tendencies up until the late 60s at the least. The Palace issued a statement claiming they comply with the Equality Act, however the fact that they worked to not be subject it shows otherwise. We wonder what happened with the “investigation” into Meghan allegedly bullying staffers. Chandra remembers the palace denying they were racist by claiming they asked the Queen's equerry, a Black man, to mentor Meghan. I mention when William denied he was racist by having his Black friend vouch for him. Comments of the Week: Minutes 34:30 to end My comment of the week is from Gabby on Twitter on the story about how waking up earlier prevents depression. Chandra's comment of the week is from Merricat on the post about Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez going to dinner. We hope Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck go to the Met Gala in September together. I remember the failed Love Don't Cost a Thing challenge that Jennifer tried to start. Thanks for listening bitches!

Harry and Meghan's announcement of the arrival of their daughter Lilibet surprised royal watchers and sent the world's media scrambling to react.Much of the focus has been on the name: Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.The name is the Queen's family nickname and hit the headlines again recently in the wake of Prince Philip's death, when it was revealed that he referred to her by the nickname throughout their long marriage. After their wedding, the Duke of Edinburgh wrote the Queen Mother: "Lilibet is the only 'thing' in the world which is absolutely real to me."Her Majesty even signed off with the moniker on the handwritten note she placed on the Duke of Edinburgh's coffin. The nickname was coined when then-Princess Elizabeth was just a toddler and struggling to pronounce her own name. Her grandfather King George V then affectionately started calling her "Lilibet" in an imitation of her attempts.Lili's middle name, Diana, pays tribute to Harry's mother.Diana has loomed large over Harry's life since the 12-year old Prince was robbed of his mother in 1997 when she died in a car crash. When Harry and Meghan first announced that she was pregnant with their second child, they made the announcement on the 37th anniversary of Diana's announcement that she was pregnant with Harry.Diana's dedication to charity has informed Harry and Meghan's own charitable works, exemplified by a quote shared by the couple on social media in 2019.The quote reads: "Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you."Harry has been raising his son Archie with stories of his late mother. In his recent AppleTV+ series, The Me You Can't See, he revealed that one of his son's first words was "grandma".While the announcement of Lili's name was a surprise for most, the signs have been there that the couple have been considering it for some time. While bookies were considering Diana and even Philippa as potential first names for the royal, a chance encounter with a group of young girls in Birkenhead, England, showed that their minds might have been elsewhere. At the 2019 school visit, undertaken while Meghan was pregnant with Archie, Harry asked a mother how she spelled her daughter Lily's name.Harry and American actor Meghan Markle married at Windsor Castle in May 2018. Their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born a year later. In early 2020, Meghan and Harry announced they were quitting royal duties and moving to North America, citing what they said were the unbearable intrusions and racist attitudes of the British media. They live in Montecito, a posh area near Santa Barbara, California. The birth comes after Harry and Meghan's explosive TV interview with Oprah Winfrey in March. The couple described painful discussions about the colour of their first child's skin, losing royal protection and the intense pressures that led her to contemplate suicide.Buckingham Palace said the allegations of racism made by the couple were "concerning" and would be addressed privately.Last year, Meghan revealed that she had a miscarriage in July 2020, giving a personal account of the traumatic experience in hope of helping others.Despite leaving royal duties, Harry's place in the order of succession to the throne remains. The first seven places remain unchanged: Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Prince Harry, and his son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.Lilibet's birth moves Prince Andrew, who was born second in line in 1960, down to ninth place.- Additional reporting, AP

May is Mental Health Awareness month, and here at the Broadway Husbands Podcast, we want to share our own mental health journeys with you- to do our small part to stop the stigma once and for all! In this episode, we shed light on our struggles with addition, depression, and attention deficit disorder. Since sobriety is a bond we both share- and the thing that allowed us to meet in the first place- we've always felt comfort in being honest and transparent with one another about our emotions. And since mental health issues shift over our lifetimes, when you are married, you often have a glimpse into your partner's childhood and adolescence and see things they hide from the rest of the world. We have become each other's biggest cheerleaders in our quest for mental well-being. Developing a safe space for big feelings at home has been key for us. In addition to therapy (which we HIGHLY recommend!) we also reconnect with our bodies by taking deep breaths, reading, and doing one small thing every day- like making your bed- to look back on as an accomplishment. And there are so many resources to help if you're ever in need. We love the Actors Fund (theactorsfund.org) and all the ways they help performers in all walks of life. We've been watching The Me You Can't See on Apple+ and have been loving it! Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry discuss mental health issues as a whole, and share their personal journeys with wellness. This workout was inspired by Oprah and Harry's new series, "The Me You Can't See." The title, "Pain That Doesn't Transform Gets Transmitted," sorta pushed us into assessing just how this socially transmitted disease (pain) might be effecting us. An initial thought that comes to mind is the concept of an individual being special. And-because one is often referred to as special, one’ll often run into another that feels that they have a greater design for the use of the one's specialty. However, what’s true is because one is special, one also has the responsibility of being who and what one wants (based on one's own design). Perplexing?

The Evening Standard's Royal Editor Robert Jobson tells us about the reaction inside Buckingham Palace following a report that found Princess Diana's 1995 Panorama interview was obtained through “deceit”.He explains why it was Prince William who recorded the royal family's statement on the Dyson inquiry, and not his father Prince Charles. But Robert also tells us he disagrees with William over the “legitimacy” of the interview, arguing Princess Diana knew what she was saying and banning it from ever being shown again would “silence her”.The report found Journalist Martin Bashir, who carried out the interview, was in “serious breach” of the BBC's producer guidelines by obtaining faked bank statements and showing them to Earl Spencer, Diana's brother, to gain access to the princess.Mr Bashir has apologised for faking the documents and said it was “an action I deeply regret”, but maintains it had “no bearing whatsoever on the personal choice by Princess Diana to take part in the interview”.Also, Lizzie Edmonds looks at Prince Harry's new documentary series with Oprah Winfrey, The Me You Can't See. He's using it to highlight mental health issues, but he's making more revelations about life as a royal. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
