This week, George Hirsch and Amby Burfoot talk with Jenny Simpson, miler turned marathoner--well, almost, as Simpson hasn't finished a marathon yet. But she'll be toeing the start line in Hopkinton on April 15, and she sounds absolutely determined to make it to the Copley-Square finish line. Simpson explains in this conversation that she never intended for the Olympic Marathon Trials in February to be her first marathon start, but life had other ideas, so that's how things developed. She dropped out of the Trials at about 18 miles, and now thinks she overtrained and overstressed about the 26.2-mile distance. For a decade, Simpson had been the best USA 1500 meter/miler. She excelled at the global level, winning an Olympic bronze along with a gold and two silvers at the World Championships. She also won the Fifth Ave Mile 8 times. Even during her track career, Simpson explains, she did a long run almost every weekend. She also attended many marathons with her husband, Jason, a 2:18 runner, and found herself inspired by the tens of thousands of amateur runners who challenged themselves with the marathon distance. Before speaking with Jenny, George and Amby discussed the biggest recent running news. Amby got a chuckle over his Google News aggregator, which brought him an April Fool's Day story from LetsRun.com. It claimed that Taylor Switft was now dating shot put great, Ryan Crouser, all 6' '7" and 320 pound of him. Take that Travis Kelce! But Amby turned serious when noting that the BAA/Boston Marathon was putting out press releases listing "5 Reasons for a Clear Course" while a Black running club rejoindered with "5 Reasons for a Cheer Course." Last year there was tension at the Marathon's 21st mile when club members allegedly ran onto the course. George was impressed by the always strong performances at the World Cross-Country Championships. This year in Serbia, the Kenyan senior women swept the top 5 places--an unprecedented team achievement. Individual champions Beatrice Chebet (Kenya) and Jacob Kiplimo (Uganda) repeated their victories of 2 years ago. The next World Cross meet will be held in January, 2026, in Tallahassee, FL. Reviewing their conversation with Simpson, Amby said that he appreciated her conviction that a woman athlete could be both a fierce competitor and a good sport at the same time. George liked her fearlessness in stepping up from the mile to the marathon. You can keep up with Jenny Simpson by following her on Instagram. “For the longest time, I thought sub-2:08 was 4:50/mile pace just because that's what coach Eyestone said one day but he mistyped it in his text message. It's 4:53 pace, which actually makes me feel a lot more confident in sub-2:08 because this whole time I've been thinking sub-4:50 per mile not even thinking that I should check his math out on my own. I think sub-2:08 is reasonable. I know my strengths are and I know where I'm good.” Two-time NCAA cross country champion Conner Mantz is getting ready to make his marathon debut this weekend at the Chicago Marathon. In the past 12 months, he earned national titles in the half marathon and 20K. He's got a 1 :00:55 second personal best for the half marathon, which puts him at No. 9 on the all-time U.S. list so there's plenty of excitement over his potential in the marathon. We talked all about that, his expectations for the race, how much he wants to focus on track or cross country in the future and much more. Plus, we get some NCAA cross country predictions from him. This is a famous workout created by legendary Australian distance runner Steve Moneghetti. Zola Budd Pieterse has every reason in the world to hate the sport of track and field, but she doesn't. Instead, she gives back to it in ways that will help today's young stars experience it in a much more positive way than she did. It has not, however, been an easy journey. Zola grew up on a farm in South Africa before suddenly being thrust on the world stage at the age of 17 when she ran a world record time in the 5000m. That time would not be ratified by the IAAF because it did not recognize competitions in her home country due to apartheid policies there. Thus to compete internationally, she was sent to Great Britain to claim UK citizenship since her grandfather was British. This move was met with great controversy as many meet organizers and fans protested her naturalization, making life difficult for Zola upon her arrival. In spite of the less-than-warm welcome, Zola still ran extremely well, claiming the official 5000m world record and earning a spot in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. In the final in LA, she was involved in a collision with Mary Decker Slaney that sent Mary to the ground and left Zola reeling from the boos that then filled the Olympic stadium, directed toward her even though the contact was incidental. Even with this disappointment, Zola went on to claim more European records, win the World Cross Country Championship in back to back years, and make another Olympic team in 1992. In this episode, Zola joins Shanna and Kara to talk about it all including growing up as a running prodigy, how she dealt with the intensity of the negative spotlight often on her, and why she competed barefoot and always clean in the steroid era of the 1980s and EPO era of the early 1990s. Zola then shares how she reclaimed her love for the sport as her own while also coaching the next generation of runners in her current home city of Conway, South Carolina. Zola is an absolute legend in our sport, and we are so honored to share her story.

Lisa Weightman has had an incredible lengthy career in distance running to date with a lot more championship racing and personal bests to add to the already crowded running CV. Lisa has competed at multiple World Cross, World Champs, Commonwealth and Olympic Games and is currently looking fairly secure in making her 4th consecutive Olympic Marathon in Tokyo next August. Lisa like all distance runners has had to endure not only the physical trauma of running marathons but also the emotional rollercoaster that is inevitable not only when racing but when the body is unable to cooperate in training. Lisa has juggled representing her country for decades now with working full time and for the past 6 years, being a Mum. Lisa has recently just commenced the next marathon training block in preparation for a potential Olympic Games qualifying marathon next April in Australia with the aim to run a personal best and cement her spot on the Australian marathon team for Tokyo, a great listen. Today on The Aid Station I have the privilege to meet Lornah kiplagat at the world famous High Altitude Training Centre in Iten, Kenya. With a career that includes participating in three Olympics, winning four World Road Running Championship titles a World Cross Country title and breaking 16 world records you may expect the conversation to be mostly about training and racing but it goes way beyond. Listen to the entrepreneurial insights of how an idea 20 years ago has become a magnet for both elite and recreational runners from around the world to train and be part of a community at 2,400m above sea level. Hear what motivated her to launch her African inspired sports brand 'Lornah'. "My Dad told me 'if you make your own decision you don't have to be pushed, do your own way and make sure you prefect it' ". It seems that Lornah has succeeded in perfecting many things. Another theme that comes through is a passion for helping others. Hear of the challenges of helping runners stranded in Iten as a result of COVID-19 to get home and of getting back to Iten herself from her home in Holland. Lornah had only landed back in Nairobi a few days before we spoke earlier this week. Watch my talk with Lornah here https://youtu.be/gomYZY0PS_E Thanks Jan Schuttert for the introduction
Jeff Hunt is one of Australia's greatest distance runners competing at World Cross, World Champs, Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Jeff began his career in the steeplechase and like most elites progressed through the distances to the Marathon where he ran a 2:11:00 on debut in Japan in 2010 that still remains the fastest Australian Marathon debut time in history. I take Jeff on a journey through his lengthy and successful career where he shares with us insights into his fine performances. A very comprehensive chat, Enjoy! In what was heralded as a ground breaking move for the discipline, the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships were staged in the grounds of a museum in the Danish town of Aarhus.
