What comes to mind when we think about toxicity in everyday life? It could be toxic relationships or masculinity – through to consumption, waste, governance and environmental harm. Alice Mah joins Uncommon Sense to discuss toxic expertise, waste colonialism and more. The author of “Petrochemical Planet: Multiscalar Battles of Industrial Transformation” and “Plastic Unlimited: How Corporations are Fuelling the Ecological Crisis and What We Can Do About It”, Alice reflects on what the petrochemical industry has to do with sociology. From the impact on marginalised communities often having no choice but to live in a toxic environment through to the concept of “waste colonialism”.She also introduces us to the work of Dr Max Liboiron and their work CLEAR (Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research) – an interdisciplinary plastic pollution laboratory whose methods foreground humility and good land relations. Alice explains how the work of CLEAR has impacted her and made her think a little differently when approaching her own work.Guest: Alice MahHosts: Rosie Hancock, Alexis Hieu TruongSeries Executive Producer: Alice BlochEpisode Guest Producer: Emma HoultonSound Engineer: David CracklesMusic: Joe GardnerArtwork: Erin AnikerFind more about Uncommon SenseEpisode ResourcesBy Alice MahPetrochemical PlanetPlastic UnlimitedToxic ExpertiseFrom the Sociological Review FoundationDeep Time, Intergenerational Knowledge, and Socio-Ecological Futures – The Sociological Review Annual Lecture 2024 by Alice MahInto the abyss: Monsters, minerals and deep-sea mining in Norway's blue economy – Jennifer E. Totalenergies fête son 100e anniversaire.

Our Sacred Universe - Guided Journeys and Meditations Podcast
Today, we're going to do something different. This guided meditation has been requested by a beautiful soul, and it was just such a warm request that I felt compelled to create an experience for you. I know a lot of you care deeply about the fate of our beautiful planet, Mother Earth. Some of you have been asking me what you can do energetically to help Gaia adjust, cleanse itself, remove some of the byproducts of human cruelty and indifference, such as pollution, deforestation, extinction of certain animal species. I figured I'd create a journey for you today where you can energetically participate in the healing of our beautiful planet, and that is what we're going to do today. #gaia #planetarywork #spirituality #guidedmeditation To support my work, donate here https://bit.ly/thisismariya_donation - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -BOOKS I PUBLISHED:- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -72 Keys to Manifestation https://amzn.to/3nGAFg3The Rose Codes: Book of Initiations https://amzn.to/3Qt9WTA - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -MY WORKSHOPS:- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Healing the Witch Wound: https://bit.ly/healing-the-witch-wound-1Etheric Wings Activation: https://bit.ly/etheric-wings-activationSpeaking and Living Your Truth: https://bit.ly/speaking-and-leaving-your-truth

Ann Rohmer looks at King and Country - As King Charles prepares to have his title formalized at the May 6 coronation – expected to be a toned-down affair as Charles “is very aware of the struggles felt by modern Britons” – many in Canada wonder if it's time to split from the monarchy. New data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds half (52%) of Canadians do not want their country to continue as a constitutional monarchy for generations to come, nearly all (88%) of whom believe it's worth opening the constitutional can of worms to sever the country's royal roots. Ann Rohmer continues – Residents of Aurora and Newmarket are encouraged to dust off their fascinators for Coronation Day as MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy hosts a community event in honour of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in the wee hours of Saturday, May 6. Coinciding with the start of the Coronation procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, MPP Gallagher Murphy invites all community members to view the ceremony on the big screen starting at 6 a.m. at the Aurora branch of the Royal Canadian Legion (105 Industrial Parkway North). Tina Cortese investigates the 8 DAY WORK WEEK. The average small business owner works 54 hours a week, the equivalent of an eight-day workweek for most salaried workers, finds a new report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). Kevin Frankish introduces us to the PLASTIC POLLUTION KID, a 10year old Markham girl fighting plastic pollution. Jim Lang speaks with Paul Rosen, who in this brutally honest account of his life, talks about all of the adversity he faced, including losing his leg. He overcame all of that to become one of the greatest goalies in Paralympic Games history, winning multiple world championship titles with Team Canada and a gold medal at the Olympics. He later also became a noted public speaker and broadcaster after his playing career ended. Shaliza Bacchus looks at “Life Happens”, a book by previous COVID-19 patient Arthur Sercan and wife Jenny Spanos recalling Arthur's time in the Intensive Care Unit. In this episode, we discuss innovative solutions to fight air pollution with Peter Sänger, CEO and Co-Founder of Green City Solutions, an European startup that researches solutions to reduce air pollution in urban areas. Green City Solutions was born due to a general lack of focus on achieving a reduction in air pollution levels in urban and non-urban areas. As the name suggests, the startup makes use of the essence of nature and uses its qualities to improve air quality. During their studies, team members found out that moss is a natural ally in fighting air pollution thanks to its properties and its adaptability, and so it should be used together with human technology. Green City Solutions has indeed a solution to global warming. They developed an innovative product which is a moss module, which can be imagined as a green carpet of moss included in a box, which helps to provide the moss with all its need to keep it healthy. The system itself enhances the moss capacity to filter the air 10 times more than normal filtering systems, and the irrigation system implemented in it allows the moss to be taken and installed anywhere regardless of climate conditions. Moss would be a great resource in our cities. Human beings inhale particles that are invisible to naked eyes, and they are dangerous to our health. By using the product developed by the startup, those particles would be absorbed and transformed in clean air, thus drastically improving health

"In this video, we speak with Chris Mallon, General Manager Recycling Operations at ACM Parts, about the importance of automotive recycling and how end-of-life vehicles are processed for reuse and sustainability. Mallon explains that when a vehicle reaches the end of its usable life or is damaged in an accident beyond repair, it is brought to an auto recycling facility. There, the vehicle is fully deconstructed and all parts that can still function are harvested for resale and reuse. Parts that cannot be reused are recycled into raw materials. This comprehensive process helps maximize the total usable life of all components of a vehicle. According to Mallon, auto recycling plays an essential role in reducing waste and pollution. By reusing or recycling as much of a vehicle as possible, fewer raw materials and less energy are needed to manufacture new parts and vehicles. Auto recycling also helps lower costs for vehicle owners, as the used parts made available for resale are often more affordable than new components. Mallon emphasizes that the goal of any reputable auto recycling facility should be achieving maximum sustainability. ACM Parts aims to reuse or recycle over 95% of materials from every vehicle they process. Through efficient recycling and remanufacturing, auto recyclers can help ensure that even at the end of a vehicle's life, the environmental impact is minimized and cost-savings for consumers are maximized." Chris talks about battery recycling, airbag recycling and recycling tyres and wheels.

Greta Thunberg continues her crusade to fight climate change by blasting the United States, while remaining eerily silent on far more egregious polluters like China and India. Why? Also, it appears the floundering campaign of Terry McAuliffe, Democrat candidate for Virginia governor, has hit a new low - as his staffers appear to be outed on social media for staging political theater as five white nationalists supporting Republican Glenn Youngkin.

There is a problem brewing in the world that has festered for too long. It’s time we all spoke out against this evil that hurts us every day. Of course, we’re talking about hand dryers in the bathroom. What else would we be talking about? The fact is, hand dryers are less sanitary than paper towels - but this isn’t the Disease Guys Podcast, so why do we care? It’s because hand dryers damage our hearing. It’s a fact, and it was proven by a 13 year old scientist with a decibel meter. Twenty-two out of 23 hand dryers tested produced more noise than health officials recommend. For those even shorter, like children, it’s even worse. We have all that and a few more surprises along the way in this episode of the SoundGuys podcast! SoundGuys is: Chris Thomas - @CThomasTech Lily Katz - @KatzGame Adam Molina - @AdamLukas17 Produced by: Adam Doud - @DeadTechnology Make sure to subscribe to the SoundGuys Podcast on iTunes and visit www.soundguys.com and YouTube for reviews, news, and everything you ever wanted to know about sound and audio equipment.

Pollution that you expose yourself to on a regular basis is an attack on your future; of particular concern are chemicals known, or suspected to be carcinogenic. Even "green" alternatives can contain harmful ingredients. It is unfortunate, but the terms “green” and “natural” are really nothing more than marketing terms, and they do not automatically equate to safety. Vancouver Aquarium researchers believe it's the micro plastics in our oceans that present the highest risk to animals and ourselves. They are working hard to understand our dependence on plastics and their impact on life. The Vancouver Aquarium founded the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up program, and is working even harder to educate citizens about the environmental impacts of our lifestyle choices.

The Obama administration undermines the EPA's efforts to clean up deadly smog. Earthjustice President Trip Van Noppen comments.
Wildlife is the biggest contributor to water pollution.
James Howard Kunstler says one reason why American cities are so dirty is because we do not have a firm agreement about how to treat the public realm in this country. He believes that people will literally trash a place that they don't like or respect. And a lot of American space is difficult to respect. While suburbia contains meticulously groomed private yards, the public highways are often lined with impressive amounts of trash on the shoulder. On a larger scale, many corporations treat the American landscape with a similar disregard. While Kunstler believes that large scale pollution from mega corporations may taper off with the cheap oil supply, he thinks local manufacturing in the future might reintroduce forms of pollution that haven't been seen in the U.S. for a while.
