Is it a "good job" or is simply a way to control the workforce? In this episode, I break down the myth of the "good jobs" because what is usually referred to as a good job (family-sustaining wages, retirement benefits, paid leave, etc.) is actually just the bare minimum. I explain what a vesting schedule is and how employers use it to coerce employees into staying in places where they are not valued; give examples of the twisted dynamic that takes place when people are making deeply personal medical and family decisions based on employer-provided benefits; and spell out a brief history of why this is so commonplace. Despite a plea from Abigail Adams to her husband to “Remember the Ladies,” women, especially married women, didn't have many legal rights in the Early Republic. Even so, women used existing legal structures to advocate for themselves and their children, leaning on their dependent status and the obligations of their husbands and the state to provide for them. I'm joined this week by Dr. Jacqueline Beatty, Assistant Professor of History at York College of Pennsylvania, and author of In Dependence: Women and the Patriarchal State in Revolutionary America. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode music is “Chester,” composed by William Billings in 1778, performed by the United States Marine Corps Band in 2014; the recording is in the public domain and is available via Wikimedia Commons. Utah's Senate Bill 113 would restrict animal enterprises and would mean the rollback of a local ban on the carriage horse trade in Salt Lake City. The state bigfooting the locals? It's a unique anti-animal rights strategy grassroots activists are fighting in Utah. It easier than you think to be accused, tried and convicted of a crime you did not commit or one that did not happen. It's harder, much harder, to have that conviction undone. Air Date: Feb 10, 2021 Published: Feb. 11, 2022 In this episode of the Ruth Institute Podcast, we listen to Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse who is interviewed by Erin Kunkle and Sarah Stonestreet on their show, the Strong Women Podcast sponsored by the Colson Center. Dr. Morse explains her upbringing, family history, and what the Ruth Institute is and its mission in the fight against the Sexual Revolution. She describes being the mother of two – one biological, the other by adoption – and having the ability to conduct informal controlled experiments because of this difference. She talks of developmental milestones, such as playing peek-a-boo, that were experienced differently between her two children. All of these interactions taught her firmly that children need their parents. Dr. Morse explains that if a child misses a developmental window, it is a lot of work to go back later and try to fix. A child only has one year to be one year old; only one year to be two years old, etc. Her adopted son missed a lot of developmental interactions in his first two years of life and Dr. Morse tells of some of the things she and her husband did to make up for it. In addition, Dr. Morse comments on the secular culture today that has hollowed out the meaning of important Christian words like equality, freedom, and love, and has replaced them with new meanings. For instance, when St. Paul speaks of freedom he means the ‘ability to do what one ought'. But by far, the most misunderstood word today is love. Far from being a mere feeling that one experiences with someone they like, Dr. Morse teaches that love, as conceived by great minds like St. Thomas Aquinas, is the pursuit of a greater good for the other, which points away from feelings to a concrete objective decision. It is in the will and not the fleeting emotions. And love is very important for the family. Children need their parents to learn what love is. Dr. Morse shares some wise words on St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body, and posits that women are the nurturers of life, and nurturing can take on many forms. She demonstrates this premise by sharing that she loves to cook for others and see them enjoy the food she makes. This does not necessarily entail raising a child, although mothers often cook for their children, but shows the beauty of womanhood and its many various forms of nurturing everyone. Finally, Dr. Morse shares what she considers a profound truth: doing God's will is what makes us happy. She explains that this is in direct contradiction to the ideologue's ideas of equality. How? Listen to find out. Listen to original, un-cut version here: Ep. 32, Do Families Matter?
Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast EPISODE #166 with Chris Gargano, who is now in his sixth year with the New York Jets as vice president, executive producer where he oversees JETS 360, which is responsible for all Jets produced content – including video production, social media and editorial – with a goal of providing football fans an all-access pass to unique, engaging, quality content over a variety of platforms. Chris has also just started his fourth year teaching leading leadership at NYU, which is what led him to this podcast. Watch this interview on YouTube here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM1i-YEAIzA Follow the New York Jets here https://www.newyorkjets.com/video/jets360-live Follow Chris Gargano: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-gargano/ On This Episode You Will Learn: ✔︎ How Chris knew that a career in sports broadcasting was the right path for him, right from childhood. ✔︎ How an injury caused him to pivot towards broadcasting, and then later, pivoted towards lifelong learning again. ✔︎ What led Chris to our podcast for his leadership students at NYU. ✔︎ The characteristics of a championship head coach, and team. ✔︎ How he prioritizes a work/life balance with a busy schedule. ✔︎ The future of leadership--building self-awareness in our future generations. I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies that we can use to improve our own productivity in our schools, our sports, and workplace environments. My vision is to bring the experts to you, share their books, resources, and ideas to help you to implement their proven strategies, whether you are a teacher working in the classroom or online, a student, or in the corporate environment. I first met Chris Gargano just a couple of weeks ago when we connected on LinkedIn and his background immediately caught my attention aside from the fact he works for the New York Jets. I will let Chris tell you his story, with the hopes that it will inspire you to reach new heights and I can tell you that from someone who has led some of the best “teams behind the teams” that he will empower you to take a closer look at how he sees top performers reach those high ranks, and it all begins with the topic of leadership. Let's meet Chris Gargano, and see if we can leverage his life story, to push us closer to where we are all going. Welcome Chris Gargano! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy season that has just begun, and I know there is never a slow time with your work, so thank you for taking the time to be here today. Chris, before I get to the questions I have for you, I mention in the show notes that you run JETS 360 that's responsible for all JETS related content, and as someone who also produces content, without a production team like you have over there, I wonder if you can give us any tips for what you do to catch people's attention with the graphics/videos/content that you create to connect you're your fans? I was sorry to see the results of your game on Sunday but know that mindset is a huge part of the game here, and I know you are going to give us some new ways of looking at life and how you deal with wins/losses through the lens of someone behind the scenes of the top performers you get to work with every day. I'm looking forward to what we can all learn from your experiences. Q1: Chris, can you take us back to where your vision for your career began, when you were a student in the classroom, before your college days, before you had this incredible opportunity to work in broadcasting and media production with teams like the NY Jets and the previous teams you worked with (Oakland Raiders and San Francisco Giants) was there any defining moment that you can recall when you thought “aha” this is what I am meant to do? Q2: What happened to that vision/dream in your college years that led you to your career in Broadcasting/Sports? 2B) I think this is what caught my attention the most when we connected on LinkedIn. What made you decide to go back to school to continue your education with your MA in Leadership Studies? Q3: When we first spoke on the phone, you mentioned that you found our podcast through our episode #68[i] “The Neuroscience of Personal Change with Stephen R. Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” that was the most downloaded episode until I checked and realized it was beat out significantly (with 3x the downloads) earlier this year with a Personal Review of the Fisher Wallace Wearable Medical Device[ii] Can you explain what your vision is for your leadership students you are teaching at NYU, what you liked about that episode? Q4: I have to ask a question about Head Coach Saleh because I think it ties into your story. I mentioned him at the start of this year on EPISODE #103 The Neuroscience of Leadership[iii] when I found an article talking about his powerful story that launched his coaching career when he traded his “cubicle for his coaching dream after his brother's 9/11 close call”[iv] and I am certain that his passion for the sport is the foundation for the success he will experience as a head coach, in addition to the emotional intelligence that he has developed. What have you learned from your interaction with phenomenal HC that you think sets him apart from other coaches you have seen? Q5: Using your experience with the Jets (and other pro level teams/organizations, what do you think is the best mindset for championship teams, that we can take away from your experience and apply towards our own ingredients for success? Q6: Our podcast took a turn towards health and wellness in the past year, so I always want to emphasize the importance of the top health staples (sleep/exercise/nutrition). With an extremely busy work schedule, how do you create the balance that you need for your own mental health and well-being? Q7: What are your final thoughts on the future of leadership, how you see yourself fitting into this vision and how do you want to encourage leaders (like those you are teaching at NYU) to step up, find their passion, true talent, voice, confidence, to attain their own individual and team success? Chris, I want to thank you so very much for connecting with me and first of all for validating the work I am doing here. It really did make me feel good to know that someone at your level was looking at the work that was created months ago, showing me that we can all have a significant impact on the world with whatever it is we want to do and for those listening to hear this example, to not be afraid to put their voice out into the world. Secondly, thank you for adding to this vision, and sharing with our listeners your valuable experience working with some of the best players in the industry. Finally, thank you for all you have shared with us here on the podcast that are all transferable skills that can be used across all industries, not just in sports. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast for episode #146 with Dr. Howard Rankin, the host of the “How Not to Think Podcast” that runs on the premise that "People aren't logical, they're psychological with the emphasis on the psycho," which made me laugh at the same time as it made me think “How are we NOT supposed to think?” and the research on this topic began. Watch the interview on YouTube here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DlnOXE39aQ Learn more about Dr. Howard Rankin here https://hownottothink.com/ See past episodes here https://www.achieveit360.com/episodes/ On this episode, you will learn: ✔︎ What is the problem with our thinking, and why is it illogical? ✔︎ How awareness is important when making any decision. ✔︎ The importance of looking at things from a different perspective. ✔︎ Why "the more we know, the more we realize we know nothing at all." ✔︎ Why new knowledge opens up our world to new possibilities. ✔︎ How to motivate anyone to learn something new. ✔︎ Why reality is an illusion. ✔︎ Common problems that occur with our human thinking process and how to be aware of them. ✔︎ How self-limiting beliefs influence our results. I'm Andrea Samadi, author and educator from Toronto, now in Arizona, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, sports, and the workplace with ideas that we can all use, understand and implement immediately, for improved results. This week's guest, Dr. Rankin, an expert in cognitive neuroscience, recently published his book I Think Therefore I Am Wrong[i] which looks at the many ways we can sabotage our thinking through cognitive biases, binary thinking, false assumptions and numerous other strategies. The How Not To think Podcast[ii] based on his book, examines how this false reasoning manifests itself in many areas of society through myths, and 'conventional wisdom.' On his podcast that I will be a guest on, Howard speaks with leaders in their fields to examine the impact of faulty thinking that occurs in every sphere of life. Dr. Rankin has extensive expertise and knowledge in the areas of psychology, cognitive neuroscience and neurotechnology. He is also an experienced speaker and best-selling and award-winning author. Dr. Rankin has written 12 books in his own name, co-written another 9, and ghostwritten 30 others, all non-fiction. He has also published more than 30 scientific articles and been a consultant to the NIH and WHO (World Health Organization). His work has been featured in many newspapers and magazines and he has appeared on national networks including CNN, ABC, CBS, BBC, and on “The View” and “20/20”. He hosts the podcast How Not To Think and is the author of I Think Therefore I Am Wrong: A Guide to Bias, Political Correctness, Fake News and The Future of Mankind. Let's meet Dr. Rankin and see what we can learn about improving how we think. Welcome Dr. Rankin, thank you for being here today to share your knowledge and insights on your recent book, I Think, Therefore I am Wrong that you say is about Epistemology, what our past speaker, Tom Beakbane, on episode #144 said was the origin of his book How to Understand Everything[iii]. Can we start right away with the most obvious question? Q1: What is the problem with our thinking, how is it illogical, and why are people psychological, with an emphasis on the psycho? Q2: What inspired you to write your book, and launch your podcast on this topic? Q3: I love making connections with past speakers and what I see with your work, I connected with Tom Beakbane's book on How to Understand Everything where he talks a lot about looking at things from a different angle. With all the books you've written, you've got the knack for uncovering ways to tell something from a different angle, in a way that someone might not have heard it in that way. Why is it important to be able to see things from a different perspective? What does this do to our thinking? Q4: I was talking with my good friend Greg Link from Stephen Covey's organization the other day, after one of my last podcasts, and after some discussion I came to the realization that the more I am learning through these interviews, the more I realize I don't know anything at all! Greg told me that quote originated from the American author Warner Ehrhard who was quoting the Greek Stoic Philosopher Epictetus What do you think about this? The more we are learning, why does it take us into a rabbit hole where we realize we have no idea about anything at all? Q5: Chapter 1 of your book is titled “Is Reality an Illusion” and Einstein said this. What does that mean? Q6: What is logic and why do you think it's involved with some of the problems you see with our thinking? Q7: What about our beliefs or more specifically, our self-limiting beliefs? What are they and how do they influence our results? Q8: How does neuroscience or an understanding of how our brain works tie into our thinking and behavior? Q9: What should we all know and understand about “How Not to Think” for educators, or those in the corporate workspace? Thank you very much Dr. Rankin for your time today to share your thoughts, ideas, books and podcast as tools and resources for those who would like to learn more about How Not to Think. Published Feb 5, 2018 With every New Year there comes some marketing changes but this 2018, Facebook has thrown marketers a huge curve ball. In January 2018 Mark Zuckerburg, Founder of Facebook announced, "We built Facebook to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us. That's why we've always put friends and family at the core of the experience. Research shows that strengthening our relationships improves our well-being and happiness. But recently we've gotten feedback from our community that public content -- posts from businesses, brands and media -- is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other." Zuckerburg went on to explain, "As we roll this out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media. And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard -- it should encourage meaningful interactions between people." This has some marketers and businesses who've been leveraging Facebook for content distribution in a panic. There's no need to panic. Watch this episode of MeMedia's Get Fact Up to find out why we think you can still be successful at marketing with Facebook.

Published Feb 18, 2018 “On 18 April 2016, the Board of .au Domain Administration (auDA) approved second level domain name registration in .au, known as direct registration. Direct registration will give Australian users of the Internet the choice of registering a name directly before the dot in .au, for example, yourname.au. The existing 2LDs will continue to operate as dedicated domains for businesses, not for profits, government, education and individuals.” “The opening of a .au domain namespace is the most significant change to the .au DNS structure in 30 years. “ The auDA Board Convened and Published Document in October 17 titled “Implementation of Second Level Domain Name Registrations (Direct Registration)” which covered (1) the development of an implementation policy for direct registration; and (2) policy reform. https://www.auda.org.au/assets/pdf/2017PRP-0310201... REGISTRATION PROCESS Extracts from https://www.auda.org.au/assets/Uploads/PRP-Issues-... Item 15. There are three fundamental principles that underpin the .au domain name registration system: (1) no proprietary rights in a domain name, (2) no hierarchy of rights, and (3) first come, first served. A registrant does not ‘own' a domain name but has a licence to use and dispose of the domain name for a specified period. A trademark owner has no better entitlement to a domain name than a business name owner. A registrant of a domain name in one 2LD has no greater entitlement to the same name in another 2LD than a third party or another 2LD registrant. The first person that applies to register a domain name will be entitled to register the domain name, subject to the availability of the domain name. Extract from: https://www.auda.org.au/assets/pdf/2017PRP-0310201... Item 8. The Panel is considering giving existing registrants across all 2LDs priority to register the exact matching second level domain name; But who gets priority is a little complicated and undecided. Extracts from https://www.auda.org.au/assets/pdf/2017PRP-0310201... Given the uncertainty around the launch date for direct registration, low awareness among the public about direct registration and the passage of more than 18 months since the announcement, it may be more equitable to select a cut-off date sometime in the future. 60. Choosing the 18 April 2016 Board announcement as the cut-off date for determining priority registrant rights will disadvantage registrants that have registered a third level domain name after this date. The NZ and UK cut-off date was between 3- 6 months before the launch date. A later cutoff date may increase the number of conflicted names. HOW WILL COMPETING CLAIMS BE RESOLVED? auDA are considering: Extracts from https://www.auda.org.au/assets/pdf/2017PRP-0310201... Item 61. A longest continuous registrant approach be adopted to resolve competing claims, because the choice of a later cut-off date will have less impact than if the lottery approach is adopted. Item 62. The Panel is working on the assumption registrants of domain names across all 2LDs registered at the cut-off date will be eligible for priority registration. WHO.IS YOUR COMPETITION? Published Feb 1, 2017 IS EMAIL MARKETING DEAD? Once we start having this conversation about any form of marketing (eg. SEO, SMM, Google Advertising) I believe a method of marketing has reached a level of maturity that it's no longer able to be used as a separate strategy to all your marketing activities due to it being overused and abused by marketers. This same conversation happened with SEO approximately 5 years ago and while SEO is still used as a term it has been integrated into marketing activities like what we do here at MeMedia and somewhat re-branded as Content Marketing. But what do the statistics say? According to Hubspot: - Three-quarters of companies agree that email offers "excellent" to "good" ROI. - 86% of consumers would like to receive promotional emails from companies they do business with at least monthly, and 15% would like to get them daily. - Two-thirds of emails are read on either smartphones or tablets. So email marketing isn't dead but the way it's now being used is less about direct marketing and more about nurturing potential customers and communicating with existing customers via email automation. This sentiment is also shared by Blogger Aaron Agius who shared in his article late last year that; EMAILS EFFORTLESSLY NURTURE LEADS. A nurtured lead increases sales 20 percent more than a cold lead. At 33 percent less cost than other lead-generating mechanisms Aaron says that nurturing via email follows a simple strategic formula: - First, raise awareness. (Inform customers about a product.) - Second, stimulate a desire for acquisition. (Tell them where to get it.) - Third, guide the reader toward conversation. (Transform prospects into customers.) - Fourth, create customer retention. (Sell them related products.) So you might be asking. How am I going to do all that with every potential customer I deal with? ENTER: EMAIL AUTOMATION. If you've been keeping a close eye on email marketing software and the proliferation of products to hit the market then you may have noticed that email automation has become an essential feature when choosing your software. AND IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN WATCHING… PC MAG HAS. PC Mag lists a comparison of The Best Email Marketing Software of 2016 When we're looking at this table we find here is that all bar one of these applications have custom auto-responders capability. Which is an indicator that this software might be what we need to help us nurture leads. But many of you may still be asking: WHAT IS AN AUTO-RESPONDER? The first use of an Auto-Responder email is normally when a new email address has been subscribed to an email list. This is when a pre-created email template automatically sends a response to the subscriber saying thank you or welcome. Auto-responders are used in many scenarios like joining up to a website and paying for a product or service online - not just when the subscriber specifically subscribes to an email list. But not all Auto-responders are created equal. In-fact there is a next level solution called Email automation. AUTO-RESPONDERS VS. EMAIL AUTOMATION Email automation is commonly referred to as an auto-responder but it's important to note that a one-off auto-responder isn't really what we would call email automation. This is really only the beginning of the automation process. Email Automation is when an organisation crafts a series of response emails that activate based on particular actions by the email recipient. Triggers which might fire off emails might include: - Signing up to a website - Buying a product - Not buying a product - Navigating particular areas of a website - Responding to an email - Not responding to an email - Opening and email - Not opening and email The list can go on and on! And Like Aaron Agius said: "A NURTURED LEAD INCREASES SALES 20 PERCENT MORE THAN A COLD LEAD." So if we want to use Email Automation to Nurture Your Customers we need to do a quick rundown on which software applications you might need to compare before making a start. EMAIL AUTOMATION WITH INFUSIONSOFT Infusionsoft has become the software most well known for email automation, in-fact they may have even invented the term. Promoted as a THE software for marketing automation, sales automation including ecommerce sales it's easy to see by looking at screenshots of it's campaign builder interface that Infusionsoft is a force to be reckoned with. Getting started with any email automation campaign requires setup of not only your templates but also your campaign workflow. This can be a little daunting for the uninitiated which is why Infusionsoft offer various services via the partner network such as; - Training/Coaching - Access to Infusionsoft Partners; - and even the Infusionsoft marketplace where you can search and install FREE pre=configured campaigns to help you get started. Infusionsoft pricing is based on contacts and the number of emails you wish to send per month and ranges from $199/mth for 2,500 contacts to $599/mth for 20,000 contacts. You can also request once of custom startup packages or discuss custom plans. Infustionsoft integrates with many of the most popular ecommerce and website platforms which allows for you to leverage all types of customer engagements. EMAIL WORKFLOWS WITH CAMPAIGNER Campaigner refers to their email automation as workflows which are not unlike those we showed for Infusionsoft. Workflows enable you to setup conditions. Services which are also available from Campaigner include: - Custom Template Design - Email Marketing Strategy Development - Campaign Implementation - And you can even request a Dedicated Client Success Representative Campaigner pricing which gives you access to workflows starts from $549.95 / mth for up-to 100,000 contacts. Higher volume pricing plans are also available. Campaigner also integrates with many of the most popular ecommerce, website and CRM platforms. EMAIL AUTOMATION WITH MAILCHIMP If you've been playing around with email marketing for sometime you've surely heard of MailChimp. If not it's widely known for making email marketing easier and more cost effective and it also integrates with all of the most popular ecommerce, content management system software and CRM software like: - Shopify - Magento - Neto - Wordpress - Salesforce - And more Mailchimp also has email automation as part of it's features but put plainly it pales in comparison to the capabilities of Infusionsoft and Campaigner. In saying this it may be the perfect entry level automation for your business given that it's set up with several preset options for you based a variety of industries and events. If you're already using a program like Campaign Monitor then there is no reason to jump ship to try MailChimp's automation capabilities, because they are much the same. Pricing for MailChimp's automation features incur a monthly $199 ProMarketer subscription on top of your number of subscribers you may wish to send to. For example if we look at 100,000 subscribers you can send up to 1.2 Million emails for $475 / month plus a $199 / mth. EMAIL IS FAR FROM DEAD So email is far from dead when it's being used for good and not for evil. And being a good marketer means you're nurturing. If you have an advanced problem to solve then Infusionsoft would be our recommended email automation software. If you're problem requires a less complicated solution then MailChimp or Campaign Monitor would be a good place to start. And if you're looking to get subscribers to actively signup to your newsletters then please don't stick popups in their face. Just create amazing content and explain what people will get and when they can expect to get it when they subscribe to your emails. Published Feb 1, 2017 UPDATE: We mentioned we were cooking up a big Facebook advertising cheat sheet - and here it is! The 2017 Facebook Marketer's Jargon Cheat Sheet. You're welcome! Recently Facebook found itself in some trouble about misleading ad metrics. There has been a lot of hyped news about it. SOME SAY IT'S NO BIG DEAL, WHILE OTHERS SAY IT'S HIGHWAY ROBBERY. Personally we take all news stories with a grain of salt, but anyone that's spent time in Facebook ads manager can tell you that the reporting is… a bit weird man. But not just weird, they are down right confusing - we're not surprised that Facebook has copped a lot of flak over this. Even in the help forums, there is nothing but unanswered questions. When you look at your ads manager, the terminology just doesn't match Facebook's typical jargon, such as “like” “share” and “comment”. Not only that, the numbers on your insights, ads manager and other reports never seem to match, sometimes they're out by a lot. IT'S EASY TO SEE WHY MARKETERS ARE GETTING FIRED UP. So rather than point the finger, we decided it was time to do our own research and testing, ask our own questions, and figure this out once and for all. TIME TO TAME THIS BEAST. First things first, let's look at some of the commonly misunderstood Jargon in Ads Manager. Then we'll get into the numbers. "REACH" When Facebook says reach, what they should say is “unique views”. What this means is the number of people that saw your ad, not including people that saw it more than once. "REACTIONS" Facebook recently updated from just a simple like to include another 5 emotions - happy, sad, angry, surprise and love. So when Facebook refers to reactions, it means your standard likes, plus all these new ones. "RESULTS" This word actually depends on what you first set the ad up for. When you first hit the “Create Ad” button, there was a screen that asked you to choose a marketing objective. Whatever you picked here determines what your “Results” are. For example, if you chose video plays, your “results” column becomes all about video. "ACTIONS" This gets a lot of marketers and business owners. You would think that an action on Facebook is a like, comment or share, but it's not that simple. If someone simply “views” your advert, anything they do after that is “an action”. That might mean liking your Facebook page, commenting on other posts, RSVP's an event or even visits to your website. What this metric really means, is “People that saw your ad, then did something relevant for your brand”. There is a tonne more Facebook Jargon we could go into, but we're putting that all into a big Facebook Marketing Cheat-Sheet, which we will share out to our email subscribers and Facebook followers next month. NOW LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT WHY OUR NUMBERS DON'T ADD UP. When you look at your ad manager, it will show you one number, and something totally different on the post or ad itself. First thing you need to realise is that Facebook ads manager doesn't care about organic growth, so factoring that in we get a bit closer. Looking in help centre, the answer Facebook always gives is “Ads Manager is the most accurate, stop asking questions” Not exactly helpful. And given the publicity Facebook has been getting over this - surely there is a better explanation. The more you look at the Facebook forums, the more it seems nobody can figure it out. That's because once again, Facebook is using jargon that's going over everyone's heads. In the help tab Facebook makes a very small mention of using “Sampled Data” for its reporting. So what does that mean? Sampled Data is a trick used in statistics to cut corners when you're looking at vast amounts of data. What this means is that Facebook only checks a small percentage of your data, then uses those numbers to project the rest. Facebook say that the reason behind this is so that they can give you results in real time. And while that's great, it does mean that you're only seeing a “projection” and not your actual results. NOW I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING. DODGY RIGHT? What's the sample size? Is it 20%... 10%... 1%... And what's the most accurate place for readings? Insights, Ads Manager, Spreadsheet Exports? This is where the trail went cold. There's no information about how to get a 100% accurate reading. So we decided to ask Facebook ourselves, and guess what - they actually responded! They said that the spreadsheets you can export are 100% correct - “they are accurate and "unsampled" whole numbers”. So there you have it! If you want to know exactly what's happening with your ad dollars - exporting a spreadsheet is the best option. Now personally we think Facebook is a great place to advertise, but it can be very confusing - and it can cost you a lot of money trying to figure these things out. GET FACT UP EPISODE 17 - VIDEO TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Chris Hogan, founder and CEO of Me Media. It's time get fact up! Thanks for tuning in, Australia. Last week we caught up on Twitter's algorithmic updates. And Instagram's awesome new feature. This week, we'll be focused on Facebook and Google. In breaking news, Facebook has announced that they will be launching ads in their Messenger app. Some of you might be like "ugh!" And marketers will be like "yaaay!" Set to launch in the second quarter of this year, businesses will have the ability to send ads as messages to people who have previously initiated a chat thread with the company. Facebook has started informing businesses to get consumers to message them so that now they will be able to reach them with advertisements when this feature launches. But have no fear, Facebook is not going to let everybody just bombard you with messages. And for those of you that have voluntarily had a chat with a business, will make you eligible to be contacted by them. That's all for Facebook! Let's get over to Google. Google is looking to speed up the internet with it's initiative AMP Pages. AMP means Accelerated Mobile Page and it's a project that Google and Twitter have been working on together to speed up the internet. Basically, it's a stripped down form of HTML that must use streamlined versions of CSS where images don't load until they're scrolled into view. What does that mean? Basically, code just got better. It's projected that AMP compatibility will encourage more people to read from the mobile web. Especially taking into account these pages load up to 85 percent faster than traditional mobile web pages. But here's heads up: Google is really strict on how you build these AMP pages. So if you're not 100 percent sure, you're going to have to talk to your developer. Sorry! The developers can then validate the AMP pages using a Chrome plugin, and there's also plugins available for certain content management systems. So, I guess, why am I telling you? Let's talk to a web developer. Oh, that's us. So, make sure you get your developer to get your website all AMP'd up and deliver faster web pages for smart phone viewing. So Google are focusing heavy on mobile, We know that, right? Well, recently, they've just brought out a travel experience update that is changing the face of web browsing, again. Though this new interface does make it slightly more difficult for users to access organic web results. Google's travel search is extremely user friendly, allowing those with the travel bug to access flight pricing, popular destinations, and hotels in their chosen area, all from one simple search. Google also gives you the option to filter by dates, interests, and pricing, which allows you to further tailor your search to fit your potential holiday. This experimental feature is great for people who are looking to travel. But, we can see some usability improvements potentially coming soon. Like we said, Google is focusing on smart phones. And they have just updated their app technology to be more Aussie friendly. Okay Google, where is the best place to get a cold one? Closest bottler. - [phone voice] Here are the listings for closest bottler. Available to Australians now, many have applauded the new voice for being better able to pronounce local names, especially those that are of Aboriginal origin. Okay, Google, How far to Maroochydore? - [phone voice] The drive from your location to Maroochydore is 1,026 point 6 kilometers. - Thanks for sticking around, Australia. We hope you got up to date. We had some Facebook updates and Google updates. We know that everybody is trying to make this place a lot better. See you next week, Australia! G'day. mate! Wanna go down to a bar? What are you doing this Saturday?

Do you have a truth you aren't speaking? You're holding a hand grenade that will explode one way or another. Truth never stays hidden. On Feb 23, 1961, my grandfather Gordon Nelson, dropped at hand grenade of truth into his local community and took a stand against ignorance and hate. In today's episode I share what he did, what he spoke and the impact it had in shining a light into darkness. "Against The Fall of Night" by Gordon Nelson, Owner / Editor of The Coushatta Citizen. Download Episode! Stoney Lake Reflections Show Notes Episode: 09 Clark Ewing What I have to say: I visited with Clark and Marilyn in August of 2017. Jenni Lane :) made all the arrangements for this interview to happen and for that I am grateful. The Ewings invited me into their abode in Saline, Michigan for an afternoon of great reflections. For starters, Clark hasn’t changed a bit! As an interviewer I was on the edge of my seat as I listened to his reflections. At once I was a camper again, waiting to be entertained…and I was also that young staffer who absorbed any crumbs of wisdom from this camp giant (or is it oracle?). As an adult, I sat there in awe. It is impossible to separate the history of camp and this couple, without one, you would not have the other. This fact cannot be overstated and is not up to debate. I’ll wait to publish more insights on my meeting with Clark & Marilyn in a devoted blog article. But for now, I’ll let Clark tell his story in his own words. You will also hear Marilyn chime in from time to time, keeping Mr. Ewing honest! ;) Enjoy. From Tina in the UK: “Your new newspaper book: I wondered if the content might be solely to do with US newspapers, or do you cover other countries too? I'm interested as I haven't had a lot of luck.” The book is first and foremost a newspaper research process. This applies to newspapers regardless of their location. It does however include a fairly extensive International newspaper Appendix. It is of course impossible to make it complete, however it will certainly give you some great leads, and also provide you with a sense of what is out there and other types of similar websites to look for. While newspaper research starts online, it very often ends offline. And certainly the worksheets would be applicable to all newspaper research. Sandi wrote: "Just got my signed copy today.
