The great character actor John Dehner signs off with his final starring role on Suspense. He plays a husband and father who tries to keep his family safe after an armed fugitive breaks into their home in "Strange for a Killer" (originally aired on CBS on September 6, 1955). Plus, we'll hear him as the narrator in one of the best (and scariest) Suspense episodes - "Zero Hour" (originally aired on CBS on April 5, 1955). We'll also hear Dehner in his two signature western radio roles: the Frontier Gentleman ("Aces and Eights" - originally aired on CBS on April 20, 1958) and Paladin in the radio version of Have Gun, Will Travel ("Strange Vendetta" - originally aired on CBS on November 23, 1958).

John Dehner stars a Paladin in "Have Gun Will Travel" - "Bitter Vingeance" with Virginia Gray as the co-star. Excellent adventure western. This is edited with all but one, original commercial. Yes radio had to raise the level of commercials by 1958 as it struggled to compete with television for good actors. Richard Boone played Paladin on television. That series ran from 1957-1962. Dehner's portrayl of Paladin was very different than the tv Paladin. That was in his contract, that he could develop the character as he saw fit and simply copy the tv character. Dehner's Paladin was a bit more cerebral than the tv Paladin. As a side note... Richard Boone was the seventh-generation nephew of the pioneer Daniel Boone. Richard Boone died of lung cancer in 1981. John Dehner passed away in 1992 as the age of 76.

This week George Dehner drops in to talk about 12 Monkeys (1995) and the history of epidemic diseases. We talk not only about the possibilities of a dystopian world caused by global contagion, but about how the fields of both environmental history and disease history evolved in the latter half of the 20th century. George is one of my former professors and it was awesome to sit down and talk to him. This is a cool conversation with one of the most influential scholars in my life. Hope you like it.About our guest:George Dehner is a world environmental historian who examines the intersection of humans and disease in the modern era. When we're starting new projects, we often say “I'm not sure what to do next” as a substitute for admitting, “I know what to do next but I'm scared it might not work.” If we're honest with ourselves, we almost always know what we need to do next. We just struggle to do the things we know we need to do. Sometimes we just have to give ourselves permission to be uncomfortable, to try something new, and to possibly “fail,” because that's the only way we'll ever take the first steps necessary to build our next great thing. Today's a great day to set aside 5 minutes to start that thing you know you need to do but have been putting off. Lower the bar so you can't make anymore excuses. You don't need to know everything. You don't need to finish everything. You don't need to set aside hours to do it, and there is no perfect time to start. Those are all excuses that allow you to put it off for tomorrow. Spend 5 minutes starting that thing today, because you know deep down you'll be happy you did it. Talk Art special episode with WePresent! We meet Durk Dehner to discuss TOM OF FINLAND as the 40th anniversary of the ToF Foundation approaches. Since first meeting Tom in 1978, Durk worked closely with the artist, serving from time to time as Tom's muse which continued until Tom's death in 1991. We also chat with Richard Villiani, the foundation's Creative Director. In 1984, the nonprofit Tom of Finland Foundation (ToFF) was established by Durk and Touko Laaksonen a.k.a. Tom of Finland (b.1920, Kaarina). As Tom had established worldwide recognition as the master of homoerotic art, the Foundation's original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work. Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art in response to rampant discrimination against art that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response. Today ToFF continues in its efforts of educating the public as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality. Unlike many artists, Tom of Finland's work has always been appreciated by a grass-roots audience as his work was first seen in commercial settings such as magazine illustration, posters and advertising. From the perspective of art historians, Tom's work had an effect on global culture unmatched by that of virtually any other artist. Tom's work had a defining impact on the way Gay men throughout the world were perceived and more importantly, how they perceived themselves. Tom's work has, therefore, had a ripple effect throughout Gay and Straight culture, influencing lifestyle, political tolerance, design, fashion and art.Follow @TomOfFinlandFoundation & support ToFF by donating, shopping or getting involved via their official website: www.TomOfFinland.orgJoin the global community of ToF! John Dehner was born John Forkum on November 23rd, 1915 in Staten Island, New York. His father Leroy was an artist. His career allowed John to attend school in Norway and France. John was also a gifted artist, and pianist. He studied at the Grand Central School of Art in New York, while simultaneously getting into acting. Forkum's talent took him west. He found animation work at Disney before landing a job at KMPC. At the radio station, John did everything from dramatic work to newscasting. He later earned a Peabody Award for his coverage of the first U.N. Conference. He spent the last half of World War II in the Army. After being honorably discharged, he returned to California. Now using his mother's maiden name, Dehner, hoped to act. Lawrence Dobkin remembered how difficult it was for an outsider to find Hollywood work. But Dehner had good timing. Thanks to William Paley's Packaged Program initiative, CBS was piloting dozens of shows. By 1948, he was a regular on the network, where a new crop of directors like Elliott Lewis and Norman MacDonnell were joining veterans like Bill Robson and Bill Spier. On August 1st, Dehner appeared on Escape in Bill Robson's production of “The Man Who Would Be King.” On April 11th, 1950 Dehner appeared in an episode of The Adventures of Philip Marlowe. It was noted because Bill Conrad subbed for star Gerald Mohr. The pair's relationship went back to their days at KMPC. By the early 1950s, Dehner had appeared on The NBC University Theater, The Screen Directors Playhouse, Escape, and The Whistler. Dehner became a regular on Gunsmoke after its 1952 debut. This is from the December 27th, 1952 episode called, “The Cabin.” Dehner spent the next six years playing a variety of parts on shows like Gunsmoke and Johnny Dollar. He was a toothless drunk, dashing leading man, vile psychopath, pillar of the community, and no nonsense anti-hero. In 1955 Gunsmoke's success led CBS and director Norman Macdonnell to launch a second adult western called Fort Laramie. John Dehner auditioned for the lead on July 25th, 1955. But he was worried about being typecast and Captain Lee Quince went to Raymund Burr. With no sponsorship Fort Laramie lasted only ten months before being canceled after the October 28th, 1956 episode. Gunsmoke remained CBS's only western until February of 1958 when Dehner was cast as J.B. Kendall in Antony Ellis' production of Frontier Gentleman. Kendall was an English journalist writing for the London Times, weaving his way through the Western territories of the US in the late nineteenth century. In the September 1st, 1958 issue of Broadcasting Magazine WCBS Radio in New York took out a local ad touting their station as having the city's most persuasive radio salesmen. They also hailed their star personalities like Jack Sterling, Lanny Ross, Jim Lowe, Martha Wright, and Galen Drake. More and more network programming was being left to local stations. William N. Robson remembered that time. Frontier Gentleman lasted nine months. In November, the network announced it was dropping several shows, including Nora Drake, Our Gal Sunday, Backstage Wife, The FBI in Peace and War, Indictment, The Galen Drake Show, City Hospital, and Frontier Gentleman.

In order to have a successful travel agency business, you have to be able to open, close, and scale. You have to open the opportunity, typically with a pitch explaining how you can solve your client's problem. You have to close the sale, because the longer you wait, the more likely they're going to fall off and take their business elsewhere; and you have to scale, because you can't run your business the same way with 500 clients that you did with 5. This episode is a quick look at how you can improve at opening, closing, and scaling. This episode is brought to you by Palladium Hotel Group. As agents, we're always looking to send our clients to resorts where we know they're going to have an incredible experience, and the TRS Coral in Costa Mujeres is that resort for me. The first thing I tell every travel agent starting in this industry is, “It's all about relationships.” It's about our relationships with our clients, because they have other options to book travel. They have to choose us. It's about our relationships with other agents, because travel agents, more than any industry I've seen, are about community over competition with an understanding that there's enough for all of us, and that we're all way better off collaborating and supporting one another than we are on our own. This industry is all about our relationships with our suppliers, hoteliers, and partners, because we don't control the entire process. Ultimately, when it comes time for our clients to travel, we have to hand them off to our partners, and it's up to them to deliver on the promises we've made to our clients. And because this industry is all about relationships, it's all about reputation, so in this episode, I focus on how you can grow your reputation the right way, with your clients, with other agents, and with your suppliers and partners, so that you can take your business to the next level. Then when it's time to answer those emails, you can just copy & paste the answer from your shared document, make a few small adjustments tailored to your specific client, and you've saved yourself a ton of time. This also gives you an opportunity to consistently review your answers which means you can consistently improve upon them little by little. Before you know it, you'll have the perfect answers to all of the most common questions at your fingertips. On this episode, I'm going to explain the exact process you can use to create an FAQ for your agency. This episode is brought to you by Blue Diamond Resorts. As agents, we're always looking for ways to improve our process and save time, and one of the best ways to do that is to partner with resort brands that are responsive and attentive to the travel agent community. That means not having to wait ages for the resort to reply to your requests; not having emails to the wedding department go answered; not having clients return from trips, unhappy about their experience or the level of service they received. All of those things add to your plate by requiring extra time and attention, so when you have a resort partner who goes above and beyond to make sure everything is taken care of, your life becomes much easier, and you can focus on doing what you do best, which is booking incredible vacations to beautiful destinations. If you're interested in a simple system that will help you improve your process and save you time, then this is going to be a great episode for you. Every agent wants more time, but when you're in the whirlwind of replying to emails, returning calls, making reservations, and dealing with travel emergencies, it's hard to set aside the time needed to look at your process and figure out ways to improve it. That is why this system is so helpful, because whether you have 20 minutes or several hours, it works. This episode is brought to you by Blue Diamond Resorts, and as agents, we're always looking for resort options that are the best in their category. For your clients who are looking for the perfect family-friendly resort, the Planet Hollywood Cancun is a phenomenal option. If you're sick of getting ghosted by your clients, then this episode is for you. I'm going to share a six step process I implemented that made a huge difference in increasing my closing percentage and reducing the number of my clients who disappeared throughout the travel planning process. Every travel agent knows that there's nothing more frustrating than spending weeks or months making recommendations, discussing options, answering questions, going back and forth over text, email or phone, just to have your clients fall off the face of the earth in the 11th hour. And while you can't avoid this entirely, there are some steps you can take to reduce the number that fall off, and when you're dealing with something so frustrating, every single one counts. The best part about this six step process is that it doesn't require any expensive software or classes, and it can be implemented by any agent at any time. This is a snippet from Breaking Walls Episode 91: The Hollywood Radio Western Renaissance (1954 - 1980). ————— One of the only western series of note to begin on television and then transition to radio was Have Gun Will Travel. On TV, Richard Boone starred as Paladin, a gun for hire. It proved popular enough that CBS decided to drop Frontier Gentleman in favor of a radio version of this series in an attempt to attract sponsorship. The idea worked. When CBS took Gunsmoke to TV, director Norman Macdonnell wanted to be heavily involved in the production, but when network execs chose a totally new roster of people, Macdonnell was incensed. To help ease his disappointment, CBS brass gave him the radio version of Have Gun, Will Travel. Macdonnell wanted to prove he could make the radio version better than the TV. On November 8th, 1958, one week before the final episode of Frontier Gentleman, Macdonnell conducted three voice tests for the lead. Harry Bartell, Vic Perrin, and John Dehner read lines from the opening script, “Strange Vendetta.” Dehner was chosen. On November 23rd, exactly one week after J.B. Kendall vanished from the air, Have Gun premiered.

In 1958, CBS launched a radio version of its hit western television series Have Gun - Will Travel. The radio program was one of the last great dramas of the Golden Age of Radio. John Dehner assumed the role of Paladin, the West Point-educated hired gun, a gunman for hire who would take on dangerous jobs for the right price. This blend of western adventure and private eye mystery was just as engaging as its television brother. We'll hear Paladin in "Strange Vendetta," originally aired on CBS on November 23, 1958.

Operation: Annihilate, IDW Comics, and Star Trek 2013. The 2009 J.J. Abrams film set Star Trek on a new course, but did so with familiar characters. As Spock said in the film, “Whatever our lives might have been….our destinies have changed.” Under the guidance of Roberto Orci, IDW is exploring these new destinies in the Star Trek Ongoing comic series. What's more, these comics have direct tie-ins to the next movie—called Star Trek 2 by many—scheduled for release in 2013. Clues to the plot and subplot are being placed in these new takes on classic episodes. But what are those clues? In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by John Tenuto and Sean Tourangeau as we discuss the TOS episode “Operation:Annihilate!” and its re-imaged storyline in the comics, along with what clues we are finding that give hints to what we'll see in the next film. In news we cover Muckle Mannequins' life-sized Spock figure, a visual take on TNG Season 8 by Bad Machinery's John Allison, the new animated parody “Stalled Trek: Amutt Time,” the Vanguard finale, and the musical collection “TNG: The Ron Jones Project.”
