This week's episode is a mix of CPA-centric news and a Q&A with a leader in the profession. First is a summary of the House Ways and Means Committee's tax bill, the AICPA's reaction to some of its provisions, and an update on paths to CPA licensure. Danielle Supkis Cheek, CPA, is the guest on the main segment, discussing how accountants can avoid head-spinning dizziness when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) — and why the profession is well suited for technology adoption. Supkis Cheek, senior vice president–AI, Analytics and Assurance at Caseware, also discusses how organizations can use AI to scale operations. Finally, citing a set of criteria from Digital CPA speaker — and JofA podcast guest — Alex Dorr, Supkis Cheek rates the amount of drama she brings to the workplace. What you'll learn from this episode: · A summary of top JofA news items from earlier this week. · Why conference speakers on AI topics have a hard time providing timely slides for sessions. · The importance of the evergreen nature of accounting standards. · Supkis Cheek's explanation of professional skepticism's role in harnessing AI. · Detailing the public expectation gap as it relates to audits and technology. · Why Supkis Cheek considers the AI era a curation age instead of a technology age.
The opioid epidemic continues to devastate families and communities across America, leaving researchers and clinicians desperately searching for new treatment approaches. What if a compound found in mushrooms could help break the cycle of addiction? In this riveting conversation, Alex Dorr welcomes Dr. Stephanie Daves from Temple University's Center for Substance Abuse Research to discuss her groundbreaking work exploring how psilocybin might combat heroin addiction.Dr. Daves shares her personal journey into addiction research, motivated partly by witnessing the devastating impacts of substance use disorders firsthand. She explains the science behind addiction as a chronic disease—not simply a matter of willpower—where individuals prioritize obtaining and using substances despite severe negative consequences to their lives and relationships. The heart of their conversation revolves around fascinating research showing how psilocybin targets the serotonin 2A receptor, which changes in the brains of rats exposed to heroin. While psilocybin didn't prevent rats from taking heroin when available, it significantly reduced drug-seeking behavior during simulated relapse scenarios. Dr. Daves hypothesizes that beyond psychedelic experiences, psilocybin may work through anti-inflammatory pathways in the brain, potentially offering a new mechanism for addiction treatment. They explore the distinctions between two therapeutic approaches: high-dose sessions producing profound psychedelic experiences versus microdosing protocols where individuals take sub-perceptual amounts. Each approach may benefit different individuals or conditions, highlighting the need for personalized treatment strategies. The discussion also touches on how environmental factors and social connections play crucial roles in recovery, drawing parallels to the famous "Rat Park" experiments.Despite promising results, the conversation reveals significant challenges in addiction research, including lengthy study timelines and difficulties securing consistent funding. As communities continue fighting the opioid crisis, this research offers hope through innovative approaches that might help address both the biological and psychological aspects of substance use disorders.Ready to explore the fascinating world of functional mushrooms? Alex Dorr speaks to audiences and organizations all over about ditching the drama and getting more productivity and engagement from employees and more overall value for companies. His session at Digital CPA in Denver in December 2024 focused on many of those same principles and was tailored to modern accounting firms. On the Journal of Accountancy podcast, Dorr, vice president at Reality-Based Leadership, explained more about how readiness for change can lead to a better work reality for employees and managers alike. What you'll learn from this episode: · Dorr's reflection on whether he was a “high-drama” college basketball player. · Why the examination of an employee's or team's value should include an assessment of “readiness for what's next.” · The “juicy” question Dorr answered about speaking to accounting groups. · The importance of validating someone's experience in the workplace before addressing ways to make it better.

I have become more and more fascinated with this idea of being a bridge as a leader. The bridge can first be taken personally when you are asked to evolve or step up in your career. The bridge can be in moments when you are able to take the energy away from whey we can't and get it refocused on how we could. Many times the bridge can be where you act as a connector between two mindsets to bring compassion to either side that may be judging the other and not helping. In your career, you will face many of these bridge moments. Some will feel like you are actually crossing a milestone or a physical bridge into a new identity. Most others, will involve you bridge-building in the moment with your teams, in meetings or in one-on-one conversations.I really think you're going to love this one and I'd love to hear the places you are seeing these 'being a bridge' moments coming up and how you are taking them or avoiding them. Awareness is 90% of the battle with this one.WANT TO MASTER THE CORE TOOLS AND IDEAS TO DITCH THE DRAMA AT WORK AND COACH YOUR TEAMS TO GREATNESS EACH DAY?Buy my No Ego: The Reality of Peace, Happiness and Great Results Virtual Course. And also, be sure to pass this along to your teams to be able to discuss. Here's the blog that inspired today's podcast below:Title: The BridgeThere is a nudge in everyone's career where you can do what I call:- Take the bridge- Avoid the bridgeor- Choose to become the bridgeAvoiding the bridge means you stay where you are. You skip the personal evolution opportunities in your career often times fueling drama and sticking with those that find "joy" by being disengaged at work. It becomes the all-too-common 'us vs. them' situation.'Us' ends up being people that think like you and 'them' being the decision-makers that just don't consult you in the organization you work for. You bond with this group on one side of the bridge.Across the bridge is a group that has chosen a different approach. They are all-in committed to the company they work for. This group is trying to make a difference each day with the resources they have even in spite of challenging circumstances. This side of the bridge is where visionaries get together and talk about what we are trying to create for those they serve through their organization and how they can get there. Each side of the bridge actually feels like indigestion to the other side. The same discussions, energy and work environment aren't preferred by these two groups. So the question becomes - which side leads to more happiness and results in the long term? This is a personal choice for all of us. My invitation is to choose wisely. Then, there is a select group that has the power to act as a bridge themselves. This is the magic of a true Reality-Based leader. They can seemingly live with a foot on both sides at the same time if needed, without judgment of either side. This person is a mindset-shifter and energy manager. One that can act as a bridge doesn't people-please to fit in on either side. They understand that, as a bridge, they exist to gently ensure our visionary, high-accountables in our organization don't get righteous and judgmental of the other side. Simultaneously, they offer those on the side of the bridge choosing disengagement and halted evolution plenty of calls to greatness and invitations to consider a mindset 'how we could' given the circumstances we may be facing. Many are unaware that 'the bridge' exists as a role to play and a valuable one at that. It's easier to pick a side and represent it and disconnect from the other. "I'm the highly accountable one, they're not" or "Look at those over-achievers over there."Many stuck in disengagement and resistance will not take the bridge to the other side. Whether it is fear of losing an identity or the camaraderie they've built with similar mindsets on that side. The lesson for all of us is you can only work with the willing. So notice which side of the bridge you are consistently on at the moment. Is disengagement in your current work situation calling you to consider testing the other side - even for a small period of time? And for those of you who've been on this journey with me for a while that are now all-in and highly-accountable, practicing drama diffusing and energy management each day - it is time to step into the role of the bridge. Wholeheartedly. We could all use more bridges out there.-Alex
Ever find yourself with so much on your mind that you want to accomplish that you are almost frozen? I find myself often getting ahead of myself thinking about what amazing things are coming or can come in the future and missing the reality that each moment I spend 'ahead of myself' I am taking no action in the moment. In this episode, I share this realization and how it has opened me up to not violently coming back to focus when this pattern occurs, but to instead gently notice that I am off-track, acknowledge it and then return back to, "what is the very next thing I could do to help?" This noticing and return is so powerful to stop getting so far ahead of myself. They move in opposite directions. When you get ahead of yourself, you lose sight of what is right in front of you - the relationships, the opportunities, the movement that needs to happen to have a chance at arriving where you are looking ahead to. When you get ahead of yourself, you turn away from the next step on your journey even though it is right there in the corner of your eye. Smiling at you. Knowing you are avoiding it. Liking that you are avoiding it. Just glance at where you think you want to be from time to time - but don't get attached to it. That life isn't moving - it's there if it is supposed to be there. Just take a deep breath, turn your head and make eye contact with that very next step that is smirking at you - seeing if you'll miss it yet again by getting too far ahead of yourself. Go up to it and take a baby step, a small stride or a huge leap of action with it. But let's never again ignore that 'next step to add impact' for the sake of getting ahead of yourself. -Alex

Most people put spend enormous amounts of energy either focused on the most unwilling or showing up each day with low willingness to do what it takes at work. They spend hours trying to bargain, beg, and plead for their unwilling folks to finally get on board. Or, they show up to work every day collecting a paycheck, but their mind is somewhere else.Gallup tells us that nearly 70% of the American workforce quits their jobs every single day. The problem is they keep coming to work and collecting a paycheck. This is active or passive disengagement from the work they do and essentially, underlying unwillingness to buy-in each day.So notice this idea of willingness - yours and others - and spend as little energy as possible working with unwillingness. Are you able?If you find your workplace experience shifting to the point where you feel you are "unable" to do your job at a high level - stop ignoring that feeling. Notice it.That is a gift. It is shining light on your next growth opportunities. If emerging tech or new software, for example, is swallowing up the way your job was done in the past, don't continue to resist and hunker down until the transition passes.Remember you have the ability to continuously evolve.Look at the last thing you learned - a new recipe, a new skill within your favorite hobby, or how to assemble something you bought online through a YouTube tutorial. You have an endless ability to learn and absorb, but many don't generalize that skillset of learning to adapt to less-than-preferred newness (aka change) at work.Realize you are able, but you haven't applied it to this new situation yet. Step into the learning in front of you, take the training or learn the new skill with this shifted perspective.Too many continue to skip the necessary growth needed in any profession yet continue trying to do their job without modernizing their skillsets and live in fear and defense each day to not be "found out" that they are 'unable' to deliver what's needed in their new reality. No happiness flourishes there. Are you steady?Have you ever had that team member that quickly responds with, "I'll add that to my list." and you come to find out, a few weeks later, that the 'list' they referenced often disappears and no action is taken? One day this person is a rockstar, gets it done at all cost, and succeeds in spite of the facts, and the next day, you can barely recognize their work.Maybe we've all had moments in our careers personally when this was the case. This is all about steadiness and being steady is highly underrated. Can you consistently show up to work in 'high-self' and bring energy to move us forward? Or is your energy or effort highly dependent on external circumstances in your life? Two people can be in very similar challenging circumstances and, based on their mindset, one stays steady while the other can no longer be relied on to continue executing their role.Steadiness is tied to our accountability levelsgiven the circumstances, but isn't dependant on our circumstances.Pause and reflect. In this moment of your career:- Are you consistently willing (whole-heartedly bought-in each day)?- Are you able (updating my skillset as needed)?and, most importantly...- Are you steady (in my accountability level regardless of my circumstances)? If not, you know what to do. You always have. Go be great.-Alex

A conventional leadership wisdom out there is that you CANNOT play favorites at work. However, did you know that the same leadership will not please a high-accountable mindset and low-accountable at the same time? This creates an interesting consideration we go into on this podcast. Many organizations haven't come around to the fact that they have some employees that default to a lower state-of-accountability each day. This is more of a victim-mindset where they believe that most of their mistakes or issues are not their fault and they cannot have much of an impact. However, in the same organization and same circumstances, there is another group of high-accountables that are successful and happy in the same situation. Both of these groups also have completely different lists of behaviors, conversations and standards of excellence they like to work in.High-accountables get nervous when change is NOT happening and low-accountables get anxious when change IS happening. High-accountables are aware the the world is always shifting and customer demands are always changing so, of course, they see that the business should be too.Low-accountables seem to want to keep things the same even though it may hurt the experience for our customers, patients or those we serve in the marketplace.I go through many examples and ideas of this "playing favorites" in this podcast. I also discuss why you actually HAVE to differentiate (for the right reasons) to be an effective leader and I give you some of our best tools to do so.So if you are someone wondering:- How to lead better- Can I play favorites at work?- Best leadership tips to reward my top performers- What tips to manage accounabilityThen this is a great episode for you. Also, here is a front-row seat to one of my latest keynotes if you want to see me in action. One common confusion with leadership and our philosophy is that people miss that high performance does not necessarily correlate with your highest accountable employees. This podcast clarifies and explains why this is so important to understand. For years organizations have focused diligently on measuring performance and when many hear our work they say, "Of course! We just need to keep spending all of our leadership capacity on our highest performers and get rid of low performers."While some of this is true in theory, one of the challenges is that performance can be such a skewed metric. The key indicator that actually drives great performance, low drama and high engagement is the level of personal accountability one has. Helping to cultivate teams that live and operate in a high state-of-accountability in their mindsets is the true indicator of future results and engagement. These are people that commit to projects without conditions, are highly resilient, honest in their ownership of results good or bad and continuous learners. This is a subtle correction that many miss in our philosophy that is a big breakthrough once leaders understand that high performance isn't always correlated to high accountability.I think this will have some interesting and practical takeaways for you as well as a mindset shift moving forward.I mentioned a link to the Employee Value Equation if you are interested in learning more about where drama comes in to the value we add at work that goes beyond just measuring performance. Also, here is a front-row seat to one of my latest keynotes if you want to see me in action. "Well...that's the way we've always done it" is one of the most frustrating statements for leaders and organizations to hear for the reason to not change the way we are doing something. This statement reveals a bigger issue than most might realize once you start to understand the power of learned helplessness. This episode dives deep into victim-mindsets and how to overcome an individual or team that is locked into learned helplessness.Learned helplessness is the belief that our actions no longer have impact on our outcomes. It's when we start to believe what we do doesn't matter anyway. This mindset is the complete opposite of personal accountability and not much happiness can come about when we are living in learned helplessness. In this episode, I share a personal example of when I realized I was in learned helplessness and some great tips to recognize and quickly step out of this mindset that can hold us back.So for any leaders wondering:How to overcome "that's the way we have always done it"How to build resilience in my teamHow to have less excusesHow to overcome excuses my team hasWhat is learned helplessnessHow to cultivate a higher level of accountability in my teamsThen this is the perfect podcast episode for you! Also, here is a front-row seat to one of my latest keynotes if you want to see me in action. Having the courage to explore the first layer of drama at work is big, but many miss the opportunity to start peeling back the layers of drama that truly get in the way from our teams being highly successful and happy. This episode dives into this idea of the deeper layers of drama that exist and a few tools to identify them and move beyond them. These deeper layers can be sneaky and out of our awareness until we investigate them. This is something I haven't talked about a ton yet as we have been going through a lot of the core philosophy in my content. Can't wait to see what you guys think about this one!So for anyone wondering:How do I reduce drama at workWhy do I not act when I am clear on what to doHow to take more action and be less scaredHow to approach the tough conversations at workThere will be some great ideas for you in this. The tool I mentioned in the podcast called Edit Your Story is a powerful tool that I do daily and now have as an internally mental process whenever I am stressed, fearful or worried. This group was super interactive and all-in to the philosophy so it made for a great time! The average person is spending 2.5 hours per day in drama at work. 2.5 hours per day! That is an enormous amount of time and energy that leads to stress and less joy in our day-to-day. This session gives you some of our best tools to start chipping away at that drama. As you carve this away, it reveals so many more places to have better results and more happiness in each interaction. So if you are interested in learning about: Sources of drama at work that add up to 2.5 hours per day per person How to lead better How to lead your team through change How to deal with conflict at work Best tools and techniques to redirect energy away from drama How to create a culture that is high in accountability How to change a culture in a way that is effective How to truly drive engagement at work while ensuring it leads to results How to help your teams thrive in change instead of fear it How to overcome your fears, stress, lack of confidence and suffering What truly adds value in today's workplace and how you can always deliver that value Then this keynote is exactly what you are looking for! If you are currently a leader or employee and hoping to take what you are doing at work or in life to the next level this is an important hour of content to listen to. Does your drama you bring to the table impact others more the higher up you get in your career? This was a great questions asked by a recent executive leader at one of my sessions that got me thinking. This podcast breaks down my thoughts on whether the impact of our personal drama as a higher-level leader in an organization is grander than our initial research has discovered. In our research at Reality-Based Leadership, we found that your overall value that you bring to your work decreases greatly if you are high in emotional expensiveness or lacking fluency in what causes drama in an organization. In fact, the amount of drama has a 3x negative effect in comparison to your performance and your future potential when you look at the total value you are bringing to a team, organization, interaction or customer experience. This -3x factor is quite an eye-opener for many who hear our work for the first time. Below is the link to do your own self-assessment and learn more about our Employee Value Equation and the cost of our own drama. https://www.realitybasedleadership.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Employee-Value-Equation-1.pdf But in a recent session in NYC with an executive group, an attendee posed the question about whether as a CEO or high level leader that your drama could be even grander than that because of your influence and position in a company. Could it be -5x, -8x or even a -10x because so many are aware of your every move, comment and non-verbal. After all, you are the final decision point for your organization and many look to your leadership for guidance. I had not considered this as an option so on the plane after the event I did some reflecting and put together this podcast. So this is a great episode for anyone wondering about: What is the effect of my drama as a leader on the organization How to lead better with less drama What is the cost of drama on high-level leaders Conflict Resolution and understanding our part in solving issues This really is something to consider and I can't wait to hear what you all think about this topic and my reflections. It really makes you think about each day and your influence especially for some of you who have a determined team working alongside you. Your influence if you are not bringing your highest self to the table could be an even grander cause of chaos in your workplace. "How can I make someone do something I need them to do at work?" is one of the most common questions I hear as I speak to groups across the country. Most are surprised to find out that trying to change someone is nearly impossible - but you can stop enabling them. Enabling the behavior you don't want is typically what leads to so much conflict or behavior that isn't what you prefer. This podcast dives deeper into this killer of accountability and gives you some practical ideas to ease the enabling in your life and as a leader. Understanding the examples in this podcast and how much we are often enabling the exact behavior we wish we weren't seeing on our teams is a powerful step in evolving our leadership. These concepts have been something I have spent a lot of time thinking about over the last 6 months or so. So if you are someone wondering: How do I change someone How can I make someone step up How can I lead differently What can't I hold someone accountable? How to make someone do something at work Then this podcast will have some amazing ideas and examples for you! Workplace wellness is a hot topic out there and an important concept for me and I loved diving into what ditching the drama means for this movement on the Redesigning Wellness podcast with Jen Arnold. We discuss the main sources of drama draining people's energy at work and what that means for the push for more wellbeing in the workplace. Loved this podcast and am so grateful for the opportunity. If you are looking for practical strategies to improve your personal wellness at work and the wellness of your teams you will love this podcast. We discuss the power our ego (and lack of understanding the ego) plays in our decreased wellness at work. As you might expect, we also discuss that our individual amount of drama is directly correlated to our reports of not being well at work. Short and sweet today. I hope you guys love this one! I find it so fun to have more of a conversation like this one on how our philosophy mixes in with hot topics out there. It always seems to add a bit of clarity to the chaos. Hope you all have a wonderful week and you know the deal - let's keep ditching the drama. And be well! We’ve all heard the phrase “save the drama for your mama” but it seems like people save the drama for their workplaces. If there’s one thing that’s constant in the workplace is drama and today’s guest, Alex Dorr, has the research to back it. At Reality Based Leadership, they have found the average employee spends 2½ hours a day in drama, which is a form of mental and emotional waste in the workplace. But Alex knows it doesn’t have to be this way. He envisions a world where work is effortless, and teams are drama-free. Standing side-by-side since 2015 with NY Times Bestselling author and thought leader Cy Wakeman, Alex collaborates with organizations and leaders globally to help them ditch the drama from the workplace, hardwire accountability in their teams and turn excuses into results. In this interview, Alex defines Reality Based Leadership and the three ways drama seeps into organizations. He tells us what to do with the drama queens and kings in our organization, how ego plays a role in the drama and leaves us with a tangible tip. Alex gives a process (SBAR) to help steer people away from drama and he offers questions to ask to shut down the drama. This jam-packed interview offers a ton of value. In fact, before I published this interview, I shared his interview with a leader at a drama filled office. If you’ve ever been around drama at work (and who hasn’t?), this interview will help you shut it down. Thank you to our sponsor, Workplace Money Coach. **Apologies for the scratching noise on some of the audio throughout the clip. There was a little interference between the two microphones I was wearing. Hope you can hang in there for the content! Many organizations have gone all in on employee engagement. Coke and pepsi in the breakroom, increase vacation days, flexible working hours and whatever it can be done to improve employee circumstances. While watching this trend, our organization was worried an over-rotation on engagement, without a strong foundation in mindsets of accountability, would create entitlement. And all trends are pointing to the fact that it has done just that in many cases. This full keynote is all about how many organizations are frustrated with their approach to engagement, why we know that the research behind engagement strategies is flawed and, most importantly, I discuss practical ways to fix it moving forward. In our presentations, we don't just come in and disrupt with reasons why we believe the current models aren't working. We ensure that we leave audiences with a settled mind because they have our framework, practical tools and techniques to actually implement what we are suggesting. If you are looking for that practical tool that allows you to still listen to the concerns of your team about what would make the workplace amazing, but you believe in our model of accountability - be sure to listen all the way to the end for the Engaged Action Planning tool I teach. This is your solution. This specific talk was only a 30-minute session, but I deliver conferences keynotes and corporate training sessions to leaders and employees to help ditch the drama from leadership, Hardwire Accountability in our teams, as well as Change Readiness (our modern take on traditional change management). There are two ways to go through each day - joy our misery, our choice. I was reminded of this powerful lesson after a recent morning I had when I thought my car was stolen after getting home late from a speaking engagement. I thought this lesson I share in this episode can show the impact of living the philosophy on the daily and how the same events can have drastically different results if we understand our ego and poor thinking. Even though this is a different setup for an episode - I always love sharing the situations where I am screwing up my practice of the philosophy and how I'm getting back on track in the moment. I thought this was a perfect example about how reducing the amount of drama in our thinking and following better mental processes can lead to more impact and happiness in the world. At least it did in my world. Hope you enjoy this episode on your commute, on your run, during your workout or wherever you may be listening. I appreciate all of you! Today, Alex Dorr and I discuss a huge trend around consensus-based decision-making. Many leaders focus on getting everyone's input on decisions but are running into challenges. Without accountability, it is creating chaos. We answer: How can we ensure we are getting the best input from all of our teams with diverse backgrounds and build true organizational alignment without additional drama? The famous Steve Jobs quote is "We don't hire the best talent to tell them what to do, we hire the top talent so they can tell us what to do." In this episode, I add my commentary to this quote to ensure top talent stays drama-free in what they suggest for you to do for ideas. By understanding a few of these filters as a leader you can ensure that you get the best out of your most talented people far into the future without limiting them. Too often we have incredible people on our teams and we constantly ask them what are their ideas and how could we change the world and maximize their talent. What tends to happen is they reveal AMAZING ideas and creativity for how to move forward. However, as leaders and the organization looks into executing those ideas they realize that there are constraints in our daily realities that quickly shut down these big ideas. This constant cycle of asking for brainstorming and creativity from top talent followed by leaders saying, "well we don't have enough dollars or time or bandwidth to pull that off" starts to frustrate everyone, especially top talent. The magic here comes when leaders realize that adding in an extra step to help ground their teams "in reality" is where true innovation and creativity starts. Many people who are frustrated with the rapid pace of change in their organizations bring up this concern that their companies are pushing changes just for change's sake. The Reality-Based Leadership philosophy really resonates for so many people. It reveals some universal truths and actions steps to start living a drama-free life both at work and at home. However, the ego and the human condition can play tricks on us and often causes some common challenges when first starting to try out the techniques and ideas. Be aware of these as you begin your journey! I feel this is one of the most important episodes I've created to date because if you are starting to believe that you "get it" and others don't when it comes to ditching the drama, you are actually being introduced to the next evolution of your ego that returns you back to judging and not helping. That ego is so sophisticated. This episode is meant to streamline you through the next phase of development as you are practicing the Reality-Based Leadership philosophy and feeling what it is like to have less drama in your life. This will help you sustain that momentum so far! Understanding these 5+ common mistakes that people run into once becoming fans and practitioners of the philosophy will help you jump the next level of drama and emotional expensiveness you can get into. So give these some good thought, attention and self-reflection as you continue your learning. I had to jump in on this viral clip that went out from a college football player that was upset about a "lack of buy-in" that was hurting their team. So many athletes and coaches talk about the importance of buy-in of all involved in order for a team to be successful. The problem, however, is that buy-in has remained an illusion and unteachable for so many. Most struggle to fully buy-in, leaders get frustrated because others buy-in and it remains an ambiguous and confusing concept. The video (you can watch the video version here) I created and now, this podcast episode, clears all of that up by bringing in the research on what buy-in truly is, why it is so crucial to success of teams and leaving you with 2 important tools to ensure that buy-in happens with your teams. I love jumping on to these videos that go viral of passionate athletes that are struggling with cultivating high-states of accountability on their teams and this one was juicy for our research on ditching the drama around buy-in to help out. So for all of my athletes, coaches and parents of athletes out there - I'd love for you to pass this on with ANYONE you think it could help. EVERY single team at any level I work with talks extensively about the importance of buy-in, but they do not know specifically how to teach it and ensure that it is happening. This episode can be a resource to clarify all of that moving forward. For those in the corporate space you will find some great lessons from this example as well. If you loved this clip, I broke down another amazing speech from a North Carolina college basketball player that was given an amazing call to greatness that changed the entire course of his career here. This video helps you understand the brain science and why that was such a powerful moment as well! Topics covered in the episode are: What does it mean to TRULY buy-in to a team, program or organization? Why is their "No Third Option" when it comes to buying in? What to do if some people just don't know any better about why buy-in is important? Tools to facilitate individuals to choose to buy-in or not The best ways to set standards and get clear on "are you in or are you out?" when it comes to buy-in How the 4 factors of accountability can helps us understand why it is impossible to "hold people accountable" that are never TRULY committed in the first place. Why conditions on our buy-in leave us never fully committed and frustrated with our experience. We dove deep on venting and whether it is helpful or not in the workplace. As we discussed, an attendee in one of my sessions wanted to know our best ways to stop the venting, but to do it nicely where it doesn't hurt the person's feelings AND doesn't look like you are taking the side of the other person, group or department involved. Here are my 3 best suggestions for that situation! This is always a sensitive subject in most workplaces because many have been allowed to vent or they may be chronic venters at their organization. In fact, some egos get a little defensive when we share the research that venting is just the ego's way of avoiding self-reflection and sharing it's version of the story. That act of avoiding self-reflection is what most people don't realize is all that is keeping the ego alive in that moment. One great coaching question or moment in "What could I do to help?" or "What do I actually know for sure?" just might put the ego that is complaining and venting to sleep and get us accountable. Why venting feels good in the moment, I promise you accountability, toggle-switching to your high-self and having impact in the situation feels WAAAY better. So for those that want to carve away the amount of time and energy you spend each week venting or listening to those who are venting. This is the episode for you! My 3 best ways to free up time, hear less complaining and all doing so in the most respectful way possible. Can't wait to hear how this works for you! So if you are someone wondering: How do I stop someone from venting? Is venting good for me? Does everyone need time to vent? Am I allowed to share feelings at work? Ever find yourself confused of decisions by leadership? Many share with me that the organization seems to have no idea what is really going on and are even making poor decisions. This episode will open up some freedom to know how to move forward to succeed anyway. So often in my speaking engagements people get through about the first half of training and the content is really resonating with them. They truly understand the power of personal accountability and what happens when we can stay clean in our thinking and not argue with reality. They even let me know that their team members are always doing this and then they drop the big question... What if WE get it, but it seems as if LEADERSHIP doesn't. Like they just seem to be making the worst decisions and even though we are doing all of this work, they don't like to consult us on where to take the company. And this introduces the next evolution of our ego. Where we believe we got it and nobody else does. I've been here before. It is as draining as it is confusing. But this question is directly where the next level of freedom lies. So let's find a better way to move forward! In this episode, I discuss how to get clear on what is happening when you believe that leadership is making poor decisions. You'll soon understand how the ego creates stories about those that are letting us know how the organization is trying to stay competitive and how we respond to this news - ESPECIALLY if it gets us out of our comfort zone. You'll also learn about the 3 main roles we can play at work and how by understanding those roles we can quickly conserve energy that would be lost in getting frustrated with decisions we aren't supposed to be involved in. Lastly, once we clear up how you can quickly settle into the most high-value place during these confusing times I will give you a couple of my best strategies on how to actually add impact with expertise and not opinions. One of the most common questions we get in sessions boils down to "How can I change another?" So many of us are frustrated with a colleague who consistently doesn't do what they say they are going to do. They may even consistently let us down. In this episode, I answer a question from a session of mine when someone brings up that they are having a constant issue with someone they work with. With that question in mind, I dove deep into the philosophy to give you our best tips for navigating this all-too-common challenge for so many people. This is one of the most common questions I hear during my speaking engagements during Q&A and it boils down to basically a question around "How can I change another?" This is such a setup question because you cannot actually change another. You can try some of the techniques I mentioned here to bypass their ego and you can try to stop the co-creation cycle yourself and limit your judgement, but you cannot change another. By using some of the tools I mention in this podcast you do what you can actually do in this situation that would be productive - you can stay at a non-judgement, high-level of accountability yourself AND you can stop enabling some of the behavior of the other person. This ability to stop enabling actually may help reality and natural consequences do it's own work to eventually lead to a better result. So if you are someone wondering: How to deal with a tough co-worker? What if someone constantly frustrates me? What if someone is consistently resistant? How to get someone to listen? How to get someone to do what I want them to do at work? Tips for solving conflict at work Or anything similar! This podcast will have some great ideas for you. Who would you be without your story? This was the central question in a recent 9-day retreat I experienced and what a journey it took me on! In this episode, I share how I dove deeper into the power of our unquestioned stories and how they create suffering in our lives and eventually solidify into identities that can keep us from being our authentic selves that can experience so many amazing things in the world. This self-reflection was me trying to articulate how much I thought I understood this universal principle of our suffering being optional, only to discover I have so much more to work left to do in understanding my own ego and its games. Over the last month or so since the retreat I have been journaling and looking deeper at these unquestioned stories and how they have unknowingly settled into identities. By returning to that anchor of "Who would I be without the story I'm believing?" I have discovered so many ways in which I can experience the world from a different perspective with a new open mind. This has been so rewarding! I've learned that as you continue to slowly dissolve some of these identities you become a more authentic you and move through the world with much less fear. It truly is another way to carve away drama to reveal our natural state of success and happiness. I am fascinated by how many people report that they leave work completely drained each day with no energy left for families, friend or hobbies. What we've found in our research on drama is that it is not our daily jobs and tasks that exhaust us, it is all of the drama caused by poor mental processes and drama that we bring in to our jobs. This episode elaborates on what I mean by leaving work "even" and breaks down some counter-arguments I've encountered while out speaking on the topic with organizations. I hope this episode opens your mind up to the idea that you don't need to follow the wave of "grass is greener" thinking when it comes to your job or career. We have found over and over that the same job that many were upset with the day before, can be a job they love after a subtle mindset shift and new understanding of how to navigate personal mental drama and the drama of others. Here it is you guys! The entire Reality-Based Leadership philosophy in one episode. Many have asked for a full overview with stories and examples to bring the ditch the drama philosophy altogether and this is it. Ready to recapture the 2 hours per day per person that is lost to drama at work? Listen in! Reality-Based Leadership is a revolutionary leadership philosophy calling for an entirely new role for the leader. Leaders have traditionally been responsible for inspiring others, for motivating others, for engaging others or making their people buy-in. The problem? These are personal choices by the individual and cannot even be the role for the leader. The role of the leader in today's reality is not to inspire or to motivate another - the true role of the modern leader is to help eliminate emotional waste (drama) from the workplace by facilitating good mental processes. Businesses have laser-focus on eliminating waste from their workplaces with good processes improvement. If you want to eliminate mental/emotional waste from the workplace (2 hours per day in our stats per person) you must be able to facilitate good mental processes and hold people accountable to using these good mental processes that will lead to happiness, high engagement and results. Learning and practicing the Reality-Based Leadership philosophy will help people recognize the one thing that unites us all and causes us to default into drama - our human condition. By working to overcome our own human condition and helping others to do the same we will start to lead teams that quickly recognize when they are in drama and help each other get into better mental processes to recapture that precious energy and use it towards better ROI. In this podcast you will learn: How the human condition leads us to stress and stepping down instead of stepping up The New Employee Value Equation and the role emotional expensiveness plays in the value we add Ways in which drama arises in our daily interactions and how to quickly redirect that energy into a better ROI How happiness is a choice when you understand personal accountability Reality-Based Thinking and the importance of not believing everything you think What it truly means to be aligned to your organization and how to add value in your role at work How to drive for results and succeed in spite of the circumstances you believe are holding you back. BREAKING DOWN THE PHILOSOPHY BY TOPIC: Part 1 - 21:27 (Introduction to RBL and Drama) Part 2 - 31:23 (Troublesome Trends and Your Human condition) Part 3 - 47:49 (Why You Should Lead First, Manage Second) Part 4 - 102:54 (New Employee Value Equation and the Role of the Modern Leader) Part 5 - 124:28 (More Happiness With Personal Accountability) Part 6 - 138:48 (Less Stress with Reality-Based Thinking) Part 7 - 152:16 (Truly Buy-In with Organizational Alignment) Part 8 - 211:07 (Start Capitalizing on Changing Times) Part 9 - 218:07 (Succeed in Spite of Your Circumstances) Here is a link to download the Edit Your Story Tool I mentioned in this podcast to relieve stress and help with venting. Your level of happiness is not correlated to having perfect circumstances in which to thrive in, it is correlated to the amount of accountability you take for those circumstances. I've noticed that my entire life people have given me varied advice and quotes about fear and how to overcome it. In saying that, I was often frustrated at the lack of practical tips to overcome these feelings of fear in the moment. This idea of fear was something I just couldn't shut off by snapping my fingers until I discovered the Reality-Based philosophy. In this episode, I give you some practical and simple strategies (that will ACTUALLY work) to start carving away that those feelings of fear to help you reduce it or redirect it into productive energy! I have often been so frustrated by some of the advice that I've read/learned/heard about overcoming fear in my life. Many say things like "success is on the other side of fear" and "once you conquer your fears, you take control of your life" and "all that you are looking for is on the other side of fear." While I tried to take those quotes to heart, I found myself consistently without a practical tool or technique in some of the most fearful moments of my life and career. I felt stuck to the extent that I just kind of had to deal with the feeling of fear that was causing me anxiety. If you've ever been in that place where you completely understand that fear is something you have to navigate, but you feel without a skillset or practical tool to redirect or calm that energy then you are not alone. In this episode, I share some of our research and beliefs about fear and ways in which you can start seeing this type of energy differently. Through repeated use of our proven techniques I have found that I am able to quickly recognize when fear is playing it's game on me and by jumping into one of our better mental processes. Fear is just a flavor of drama caused by our human condition that hasn't been filtered through a good mental process. By learning the good mental processes and tools in this episode you will find yourself better equipped to carve away the drama that fear causes to be better able to conserve that energy and put it towards actions that will lead to more impact and happiness. Thank you for checking out the episode and I cannot wait to hear your thoughts! Loved being able to get this one out to you guys. Let's keep ditching the drama. - AD
A recent speaking engagement in Alaska led to a heck of an adventure and a pretty interesting test of living out the philosophy as my plans played out. I hope you all get a laugh out of me trying to practice what I preach so to speak with our drama-free philosophy! When you listen through this adventure, you probably won't be able to believe that I only had really 2 full days in Alaska and all of this happened. I hope you all can relate to the fact that even though I speak and teach how to be drama-free for a living - I am, myself, working my own program of trying to overcome my human condition that defaults to drama. As you'll hear, I fell back into believing my own thinking which led to a bunch of self-imposed suffering at multiple points of this trip and I was reminded of how amazing people can be and reminded of how our model and mental process of personal accountability can truly lead to the most happiness and success in our lives. Buckle up and throw those headphones in! You are officially coming with me to Alaska. Here's the real story of how it all went down... Still drama free. Enjoy!
Many believe that empowerment and having authority comes after you get a job title and it simply is not true. In this episode, I give practical ways to have incredible impact in any situation regardless of your job title or authority in an organization. So many people I come across are sitting back and waiting for a leader to impact a situation and help with the drama between their teams and this episode really challenges you to start noticing where you step down and choose to step out of the influence you can have in each moment. By understanding and recognizing these situations and stepping up to redirect any energy that is getting the group off track into drama you can become the "leader" even when you don't have the perceived authority that comes with the title of leader. Also, using these techniques and good mental processes over time start to save up data points to lead you to be the low-drama, high-value employee that is the top promotion candidate of the future. So if you are someone wondering: How can I have more influence in my company? How can I influence others when I am not the authority figure? Can I be a leader without having the job title of leader? How do I be a leader without having the authority of the job title? How can I have more say in decisions in my company? Then this is a podcast loaded with tips for you. I hope you guys enjoy these practical tips on how to become a master of managing this energy! Let's keep ditching the drama.
We've been talking a lot about drama in our lives and in this episode I wanted to pinpoint exactly what causes that drama so you can quickly recognize it when it comes. Drama is simply mental/emotional waste in our lives. To get rid of waste or inefficiencies, it is standard business practice for businesses to implement good processes to eliminate that waste. How do you get rid of mental/emotional waste? By using good MENTAL processes in our own thinking or facilitating the use of good mental processes for others. Understanding this idea is one of the biggest steps to understanding how to start carving away the drama that comes up in your day-to-day. After clarifying what causes drama, I discuss a practical strategy I often use to redirect that energy that is about to be lost to drama and put it towards adding more impact or value in a situation.
You hear it everywhere - change your mindset, change your life. There is so much out there about the importance of changing your mindset or being in the right frame of mind to get better results. But how do you actually change a mindset? What practical ways can you do that in the moment? Why is it even important? In this episode, I discuss our human condition and why it is actually important to know not only how to change your mindset, but when to change it. I teach you how to recognize your own human condition and how we step down mentally 50-100 times a day and then I reveal a few practical strategies to change your mindset, in the moment to answer the call to greatness instead of stepping down. Lastly, I share a couple of stories about a few breakthroughs I had in my life when I realized, through a mindset shift, that my suffering and frustration was completely optional. In fact, I learned that one of the most powerful mental processes you can have is to be able to separate out your suffering from your reality. Most people have never experienced this feeling. Hold on to your hats when you listen to this episode my people! Cannot wait to hear what it unlocks for you.
