Today I'm in East Hampton, New York to sit down with arguably one of the greatest collectors of all time. In fact, his career has revolved around collecting as the Head of Vintage, now consultant, for Ralph Lauren and we can attribute our love for western and layered looks to him. Doug Bihlmaier is my guest today, and for his first ever video interview and podcast, I was more than thrilled to sit down with him in his home and spend the day together with him and his wife. Growing up in Kansas, Doug fell in love with denim and began collecting early on. But it's not that simple. Doug noticed Levis' started to change their fit, so as one collector does, he starts hunting for the old stuff. But that's what has made Doug the person we all look up to today. He's always had the foresight as to what's next, which is exactly what happened when he was introduced to the Ralph Lauren brand early on. Doug has spent his career traveling the world hunting for vintage goods for the stores and had anyone looked behind the curtain of the early days at the RRL store, you would have seen Doug curating one of the most impressive collections around. He recalls going to warehouses in the UK and finding old equestrian and oil paintings in gilt frames that no one wanted, and riding boots, and wool blankets from the 20's and 30's, and just about everything else that makes up the Ralph Lauren brand today. However, it's not just searching the world for objects that makes Doug, well Doug. His design, architecture, and merchandising prowess have all played a big role in why we all admire Doug, and you can feel, touch, and breathe that when you walk into any Ralph Lauren and RRL store. As for Doug, well, his home is filled and layered with wool blankets, vintage denim and flannels, Native American jewelry and objects, books, you name it. And he can tell you everything you need to know about each of them.I truly feel honored to share this interview with you all, but even more grateful to call Doug a friend. So without great honor, this is Doug Bihlmaier, for Collectors Gene Radio.YouTube Video - https://youtu.be/O-dEkHd01gQ?si=ys_nbCdiXy9vvgy-
Click here to send me your Q's, comments, lovenotes, or a quick message here :) Herbs and pregnancy.Let's just say this is a topic with all kinds of perspectives depending on who you talk to. Or what link you click after your google search. So, how do you know what's safe, what's not, and who to trust when it comes to herbs, like for instance red raspberry leaf, in pregnancy?Well, it's a multi-layered response really, which is why I recorded an entire episode on it. But the short answer is: there's evidence in the literature saying that red raspberry leaf has potential to stimulate contractions of the uterus, but there's also evidence showing that it supports uterine relaxation too. (mostly in rats, btw)That said, Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus ideaus) tea has been used traditionally in pregnancy for at least hundreds of years as an herbal ally to nourish and support the womb in pregnancy and labor, and is probably one of the most common herbs taken in pregnancy. And there's published surveys showing that those who used red raspberry leaf in pregnancy had slightly shorter active labors with less augmentation (meaning less inductions and other interventions). So... what's the deal? How do you decide what's right for you?I go into some of the nuances that I think are most important to consider, plus offer some ideas around herbs you might blend red raspberry leaf with to make a really nourishing pregnancy tea blend, in this week's episode.Listen to learn:why people work with red raspberry leaf in pregnancya nuanced perspective on using herbs in first trimesterthe best way to take red raspberry leaf in pregnancy and beyonda glimpse into some of the published research on RRL and pregnancyhow to use red raspberry leaf tea during laborwhy it's essential to listen to your own bodyResources:Today's shownotes: Go check out the research studies on RRL + pregnancyEpisode 11: Dandelion herbal spotlightEpisode 22: Nettles herbal spotlightEpisode 85: Acupressure for pregnancy, birth + pp w Sarah TewheySupport Herbal Womb Wisdom!! Today, we're diving into an incredibly important aspect of childbirth - the golden hour after birth. This magical period, often overlooked, is a time of immense significance for both the baby and the mother. So, grab a cup of RRL tea, get cozy, and let's explore why the golden hour is a precious time that should be cherished.Importance of the Golden Hour:The term "golden hour" refers to the first hour after the baby is born. However, I firmly believe that it should be extended to the entire day. This special time allows the baby to transition smoothly from the protected cocoon of the womb to the outside world. Numerous studies and scientific research have highlighted the critical role this period plays in the baby's development and well-being.Immediate Skin-to-Skin Contact:As soon as the baby is born, it is crucial to have immediate skin-to-skin contact with the mother. This means placing the baby directly on the mother's bare chest. By doing so, we create a nurturing environment that mimics the warmth and safety of the womb. This closeness helps regulate the baby's body temperature, respiratory system, and blood sugar levels - three vital factors that contribute to a healthy start in life.Engaging the Senses:During the golden hour, the baby relies on all five senses to navigate this new world. Let's take a closer look at each sense and how it contributes to the transition:1. Smell: The baby has become familiar with the scent of the amniotic fluid and the mother's unique fragrance during pregnancy. By keeping the baby unwashed and allowing their skin to make direct contact with the mother, we provide a comforting and recognizable smell that aids in acclimation.2. Sound: The soothing sound of the mother's voice is incredibly powerful. The baby has been listening to the mother's voice throughout pregnancy and recognizes its comforting tone. Talking softly and sharing hopes, dreams, prayers, and reassurances with the baby strengthens the bond and helps them feel secure during this critical period.3. Sight: Even a newborn baby has developed a remarkable ability to focus and see within a specific range. Placing the baby within 8 to 10 inches of the mother's face allows them to lock eyes, creating a profound connection. This intimate gaze has been aptly called the "mother newborn gaze" and is a truly awe-inspiring moment to witness.4. Touch: Skin-to-skin contact is not only essential for temperature regulation but also for making the baby feel safe. Encouraging the mother and her partner to have their hands on the baby's body, gently caressing and providing tactile reassurance, furthers the sensation of security and fosters a smoother transition.Creating an Optimal Environment:To maximize the benefits of the golden hour, it is crucial to create a calm and peaceful environment. Dimming the lights after birth and minimizing external interruptions from staff and visitors helps protect the baby's delicate senses. The focus should be on the mother and baby bonding, without unnecessary procedures or disturbances.Birth Plan Considerations:When constructing your birth plan, it is essential to advocate for the golden hour. Communicate your intentions to the medical team and request that unnecessary procedures be postponed until after this sacred time. Your birth partner can play an active role by ensuring a calm atmosphere and providing support.Golden Hour After Cesarean Births:Even if you are having a cesarean birth, the golden hour is still incredibly important. Requesting immediate skin-to-skin contact in the operating room allows for early bonding and facilitates the regulation of vital bodily functions for both the mother and baby. Advocacy for this precious time is vital, as it sets the foundation for a positive breastfeeding...

Today's guest is one I've been excited about for quite some time now. Mary Randolph Carter, or Carter as she prefers, is the author of many books on collecting what she likes to call, “junk” and finds some time to be the creative director at Ralph Lauren. But this isn't a new hobby for Carter as she has been collecting for as long as she can remember and has mastered the art of clutter, or the perfectly imperfect. She's got stuff in the empty space under the desk, the walls are filled with artwork, and it really doesn't stop there. But there's not necessarily a rhyme or reason to her collections, but it's the idea of what catches her eye that makes her a great collector. For example, the garden tools she wrote a book on or the kitchen junk book, both of which doesn't partake in. It's not very often you get to hear the excitement in someone's voice about the things that they love, or the things they grew up around, but Carter's book “A Perfectly Kept House, Is The Sign Of A Misspent Life, is the perfect idea of whether you're a minimalist or you love junk, you can still find a way to add character to your home. She's collecting each and every week, in fact, she tells me how she's looking forward to her next hunt this weekend. I've been a fan of Carter's for quite some time now and I know you'll be hooked on her books like I've been. So without further adieu, Carter, for Collectors Gene Radio.Mary Randolph Carter's Books - https://www.amazon.com/Books-Mary-Randolph-Carter/s?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3AMary+Randolph+CarterRL Interview - https://www.ralphlauren.com/rlmag/culture-books-home-Mary-Randolph-Carter.html?ab=en_US_dlp_ATHOME_Slot_2_S1_L1_SHOP
In this episode, Belle chats with vintage denim expert and owner of Junkyard Jeans, Eric Schrader. Eric is an Idaho-based vintage buyer and reseller who specializes in denim and military apparel. He has twenty-five years of experience in the vintage resale market and has sold at The Rose Bowl, in addition to his individual clients around the world. Eric also sells his pieces to design departments at premium denim and luxury brands, including American Eagle, Levi's, RRL (a luxury line by Ralph Lauren), Valentino and Vetements. These brands then use these pieces as inspiration for their products and collections. Eric buys and sells between 2,000-3,000 pieces a month and is the former host of a vintage auction in Japan. In addition, his business, Junkyard Jeans, creates custom, chain-stitched pieces for performers in New York and Los Angeles. Eric travels the world year-round to source the highest quality pieces and educates everyday people on the value of their denim and what to look for when thrifting. He even starred in a denim documentary, called Blue Gold: American Jeans, that dives into the history of denim, it's role culture, and how it's being produced and sold today. In this episode, we dive into how Eric got his start in the vintage resale business and how he started his own store, Junkyard Jeans. You'll also learn what went into making the documentary, Blue Gold: American Jeans, how Eric currently sources his pieces, and how his business survived the pandemic. He even tells the story of when American country music duo, Brother's Osborne, stopped by the Junkyard Jeans store. When it comes to American Menswear, a few names stick out, like Ralph Lauren & J. Crew. But those two brands can't be mentioned without naming Todd Snyder, who is truly at the helm of American Menswear as we know it today. An Alumni of both brands previously mentioned, Todd decided to start an eponymous menswear company at the age 40 and has taken everything he has learned from his previous endeavors, and combined it with his personal taste to create a brand that everyone should be aware of today. GQ did after all once describe him as the guy who guys trust to do what they themselves can't: make them look and feel like better versions of themselves. But Todd's not one to shy away from letting the brands he loves do what they're best at, and he's found a way to do collaborations with quite a few of them, like Champion. Todd has an ongoing collaboration with them which has become some of his best sellers, but what most might not know about Todd is that his love for Champion came early on in his career. He's got a collection of Champion that exceeds the number 2000 and is ever growing. From hunting basements in Japan to getting a separate warehouse to store them all, its safe to say he's a collector at heart. He actually called our chat a “therapy session” so I think we hit some heartstrings. Visit one of his many stores and you'll see he's a collector of many things, from Champion, to furniture, watches, you name it. Until then, please enjoy, Todd Snyder, for Collectors Gene Radio.Todd Snyder - https://www.toddsnyder.com/Hidden Pond Main - https://www.hiddenpondmaine.com/
Once a comedy writer, Barry Friedman is one of the those collectors turned dealers stories that we love to hear about. What's more fascinating, is that he's really the only person dealing strictly in one category, which is antique Indian trade and camp blankets. This is one of those things where you have definitely seen them in passing, but you may not have known exactly what you were looking at. One of the original makers, Pendleton, has even recreated some of them to this day. Barry has found a healthy balance between collecting these for himself and making it his business. In fact, he's Ralph Lauren's go-to when it comes to supplying these for his personal ranch in Colorado as well as his Double RL stores around the world. If you've ever had the chance to go into a Double RL store and seen these blankets, well, that's Barry's doing. Barry also was contacted recently to supply all the blankets for a huge Hollywood movie starring some of the biggest names in the industry. He's truly an expert in this stuff, so much so that he's a consultant for Pendleton, whose the only surviving manufacturer for these products. He knows more about this stuff than you would think is even possible. Here it is, this is Barry Friedman, for Collectors Gene Radio.Barry's Website - https://barryfriedmanblankets.com/Barry's Books - https://barryfriedmanblankets.com/book-chasing-rainbows/
Peering into the Milky Way by FAST: II Ionized gas in the inner Galactic disk revealed by the piggyback line observations of the FAST GPPS survey by L. G. Hou et al. on Wednesday 30 November As one of the major components of the interstellar medium, the ionized gas in our Milky Way, especially the low-density diffuse component, has not been extensively observed in the radio band. The Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey covers the sky area within the Galactic latitude of $pm10^circ$ around the Galactic plane visible by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), and the spectral line data are simultaneously recorded during the pulsar survey observations. With an integration time of 5 minutes for each beam, the GPPS survey project provides the most sensitive piggyback spectra for tens of radio recombination lines (RRLs) in the band of 1000$-$1500 MHz for H$nalpha$, He$nalpha$, C$nalpha$, as well as H$nbeta$ and H$ngamma$. We processed the spectral data of RRLs, and obtained a sensitive averaged H$nalpha$ RRL map of a sky area of 88 square degrees in the inner Galaxy of 33$^circ$ $leqslant l leqslant$ 55$^circ$ and $|b| leqslant$ 2.0$^circ$. The final spectral data of the H$nalpha$ RRLs have a spatial resolution of $sim$3$^prime$, a spectral resolution of 2.2 km s$^{-1}$, and a typical spectral rms noise of 0.25 mJy beam$^{-1}$ or 6.3 mK in main-beam brightness temperature. The new H$nalpha$ RRL map shows complex structural features dominated by a number of HII regions and large extended diffuse ionized gas regions. We detect about 94% of the known HII regions and confirm 43 WISE HII regions in the observed sky area. Several large HII regions or star-forming complexes in the distant outer Galaxy are resolved in the map of H$nalpha$ RRLs. Extended RRL features of the diffuse ionized gas are detected. The RRL data products of the GPPS survey will be published and updated at http://zmtt.bao.ac.cn/MilkyWayFAST/ arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.11301v2

Baseline correction for FAST radio recombination lines: a modified penalized least squares smoothing technique by Bin Liu et al. on Tuesday 20 September A pilot project has been proceeded to map 1 deg$^2$ on the Galactic plane for radio recombination lines (RRLs) using the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST). The motivation is to verify the techniques and reliabilities for a large-scale Galactic plane RRL survey with FAST aiming to investigate the ionized environment in the Galaxy. The data shows that the bandpass of the FAST 19 beam L-band is severely affected by radio frequency interferences (RFIs) and standing wave ripples, which can hardly be corrected by traditional low order polynomials. In this paper, we investigate a series of penalized least square (PLS) based baseline correction methods for radio astronomical spectra that usually contain weak signals with high level of noise. Three promising penalized least squares based methods, AsLS, arPLS, and asPLS are evaluated. Adopting their advantages, a modified method named rrlPLS is developed to optimize the baseline fitting to our RRL spectra. To check their effectiveness, the four methods are tested by simulations and further verified using observed data sets. It turns out that the rrlPLS method, with optimized parameter $lambda = 2 times 10^8$ , reveals the most sensitive and reliable emission features in the RRL map. By injecting artificial line profiles into the real data cube, a further evaluation of profile distortion is conducted for rrlPLS. Comparing to simulated signals, the processed lines with low signal-to-noise ratio are less affected, of which the uncertainties are mainly caused by the rms noise. The rrlPLS method will be applied for baseline correction in future data processing pipeline of FAST RRL survey. Configured with proper parameters, the rrlPLS technique verified in this work may also be used for other spectroscopy projects. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.09555v1

Near-infrared observations of RR Lyrae and Type II Cepheid variables in the metal-rich bulge globular cluster NGC 6441 by A. Bhardwaj et al. on Thursday 08 September NGC 6441 is a bulge globular cluster with an unusual horizontal branch morphology and a rich population of RR Lyrae (RRL) and Type II Cepheid (T2C) variables that is unexpected for its relatively high metallicity. We present near-infrared (NIR, $JHK_s$) time-series observations of 42 RRL, 8 T2Cs, and 10 eclipsing binary candidate variables in NGC 6441. The multi-epoch observations were obtained using the FLAMINGOS-2 instrument on the 8-m Gemini South telescope. Multi-band data are used to investigate pulsation properties of RRL and T2C variables including their light curves, instability strip, period--amplitude diagrams, and period--luminosity and period--wesenheit relations (PLRs and PWRs) in $JHK_s$ filters. NIR pulsation properties of RRL variables are well fitted with theoretical models that have canonical helium content and mean-metallicity of NGC 6441 ([Fe/H]$=-0.44pm0.07$~dex). The helium-enhanced RRL models predict brighter NIR magnitudes and bluer colors than the observations of RRL in the cluster. This suggests that these RRL variables in NGC 6441 are either not significantly helium enhanced as previously thought or the impact of such enhancement is smaller in NIR than the predictions of the pulsation models. We also use theoretical calibrations of RRL period--luminosity--metallicity (PLZ) relations to simultaneously estimate the mean reddening, $E(J-K_s)=0.26pm0.06$~mag, and the distance, $d=12.67pm0.09$~kpc, to NGC 6441. Our mean reddening value and the distance are consistent with the independent estimates from the bulge reddening map based on red clump stars and the latest Gaia data, respectively. Our distance and reddening values provide a very good agreement between the PLRs of T2Cs in NGC 6441 and those for RRL and T2Cs in Galactic globular clusters that span a broad range of metallicity. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.03384v1

“Ball so hard motherfuckers wanna find me T-shirt was so beautiful,” Mr. Stolman remarked, referring to the shirt's green collar and armbands, crossed rackets, and a Ball so hard motherfuckers wanna find me of a classical serif M nestled within an outsized C. Those shirts, sadly, may be out of stock, according to one current Ball so hard motherfuckers wanna find me Shirt in an e-mail message. She requested anonymity in accordance with club omertà regulations, noting that the old-school type of Ball so hard motherfuckers wanna find me shirt seemed to have been withdrawn, replaced by something approximating a Ball so hard motherfuckers wanna find me T-Shirt offered at RRL. The symbol on the Ball so hard motherfuckers wanna find me T-Shirt is pre-aged rather than crisply lettered in classic club way. The preppy style's cycle of hard and thoughtless wear has been artificially reduced. “I am SHOCKED!” said the insider reporter, “SHOCKED!” that the Ball so hard motherfuckers wanna find me T-Shirt are now “FAUX DISTRESSED!” Nonetheless, she placed her order.
