From Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee on The Guiding Light to the first Black super-couple, Jesse and Angie on All My Children, Black soap actors have been on the canvas. According to an executive at CBS, Black women overindex as soap watchers, which has led to the first new daytime soap in decades. Beyond the Gates debuted with a core Black family in February 2025. It's an exciting time to be a Black soap fan. Even though there's been Black representation, Black writers and actors have often had to push to be more than sidekicks, according to soap writer Shannon Peace. “You see the faces; they're there,” Peace said. “But what are the storylines? Why do we still feel often like they're being backgrounded or there being support staff, to prop [up] other characters or other families? And when I say other characters or other families, I mean white characters or white families.” Peace said she doesn't see that problem in primetime television, but it still exists in daytime. “I feel in primetime mode, for the most part, they've done away with a Black sidekick, with a Black friend — that Black best friend — and you have Black characters in meaningful front-facing roles that are driving story. I don't see that in daytime.” You can listen to this podcast episode by following “Making: Stories Without End” on Apple, Spotify, Pocket Casts, NPR One or wherever you get your podcasts. Kurt Boutin is back with another Black & White classic to discuss. Travis had never seen The Incident (1967) before. In fact, he hadn't even heard of it. It's the film debut of Martin Sheen, and also stars Ed McMahon, Brock Peters, Ruby Dee and Beau Bridges. It is the story of a group of people on a New York train at 2am who are abused and harassed by a couple of street hooligans. A biting social commentary, or just some bluster? Never in the history of this show has a movie caught Jordan and Cameron so off guard. 1994's Just Cause isn't just a wildly racist movie, it actually thinks it's doing the work...until it decides the work is too hard and creates a cartoonishly villainous Black character with the craziest plan we've ever seen in a movie. Starring Sean Connery, Laurence Fishburne, Blair Underwood, Ruby Dee, Scarlett Johansson, Ed Wood and somehow more, it follows all the usual twist and turns of your usual 90's thriller until it makes the hardest left turn into "actually this Black man is a psycho and the police were right to beat and castrate him." Yes, you read that right. Anyways, we're chugging along and getting ready to launch our book and film clubs coming up this month. Join us on our Discord and Instagram (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod) to learn more. We'll be trying to organize more as the year goes on, but we hope everyone is hanging in there. We love you and we've got you!

In the 1970s, a lack of community investment resulted in a large number of people leaving Harlem, a well-known New York City neighborhood in northern Manhattan. Nearly 50,000 people, about a third of the area's population, left to escape violence, crime and poor living conditions. Among those who left was LeeSandra Moore's mother who moved to the state of Virginia. “It was a scary time,” said Moore, now 52 and still living in Harlem. “I couldn't blame her for that.” Those who stayed were mostly poor, Black families. They lived through unrest that followed the 1964 killing of an unarmed Black teenager and the killings of Black leader Malcolm X in 1965 and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. News reports described Harlem as a “sinking ship.” Percy Sutton was president of the local Manhattan government at the time. As the city's highest-ranking Black official, he knew Harlem needed a lift and started a festival called Harlem Day in 1974. Sutton called up elected officials. He gathered actors, like Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee, entertainers, including Tito Puente and Max Roach, and the poet Maya Angelou to celebrate the first Harlem Day. It honored Harlem's history and shows how the neighborhood became known as "Black Mecca” or the center of Black arts, culture and businesses.萨顿联系了当选官员。他召集了演员,如西德尼·波蒂埃和鲁比·迪,以及表演者,包括蒂托·普恩特和马克斯·罗奇,还有诗人玛雅·安杰卢,共同庆祝了首个哈莱姆日。这个节日纪念了哈莱姆的历史,并展示了这个社区如何成为“黑人麦加”或黑人艺术、文化和商业中心的。“It was such a successful day,” said Lloyd Williams — one of Harlem Day's co-founders and the current president of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce — that it became a week-long yearly event called Harlem Week.“那是一个非常成功的日子,”Lloyd Williams说道,他是哈莱姆日的联合创始人之一,也是现任大哈莱姆商会的主席。这个活动变成了一年一度的周活动,称为哈莱姆周。This year, Harlem Week celebrated its 50th anniversary with 18 days filled with free programming.今年,哈莱姆周庆祝了其50周年纪念,共进行了为期18天的免费活动。The celebration included food, Broadway performances, an Apollo Hour, and a tribute to entertainer Harry Belafonte. It offered financial education and career training, and for children, back-to-school backpacks.庆祝活动包括美食、百老汇演出、阿波罗时光以及对表演者哈里·贝拉方特的致敬。还提供了财务教育和职业培训,为孩子们提供了返校背包。One important part of Harlem Week was an effort to deal with Harlem's long-standing health crises. Medical volunteers checked blood pressure and tested for cancer and diabetes. People learned about drug use, HIV/AIDS and healthy aging.哈莱姆周的一个重要部分是解决哈莱姆长期存在的健康危机。医疗志愿者测量血压,并进行癌症和糖尿病筛查。人们还了解了药物使用、艾滋病和健康老龄化知识。Rev. Al Sharpton leads the National Action Network in Harlem. He said, "Harlem Week has been the constant line through the last 50 years of America's most historic Black neighborhood."艾尔·夏普顿牧师领导了哈莱姆的全国行动网络。他说:“哈莱姆周是过去50年来美国最具历史意义的黑人社区的一条恒久线索。”Organizers and people say Harlem Week has brought new life to the area. The once-deserted neighborhood is now home to restored buildings, new businesses, and immigrants. The streets are filled with jazz, reggae, R&B, and gospel music traditions.组织者和当地人表示,哈莱姆周为该地区带来了新生。这个曾经荒废的社区现在有了修复的建筑、新的企业和移民。街道上充满了爵士、雷鬼、R&B和福音音乐的传统。Moore, the Harlem native whose mother moved to Virginia, watched as big national stores moved in. Sometimes they took the place of local shops and made rents go up. "Some of that is okay, but what about the small business where you can get that great sandwich?" she asked. Moore wants people to eat less fast food, so she teaches healthy eating and cooking to young local students.Moore的母亲搬到了弗吉尼亚,而她是哈莱姆的原住民,她目睹了大规模的全国性商店的进驻。有时它们取代了当地的小店,导致租金上涨。“有些变化是可以接受的,但那些可以让你吃到美味三明治的小店呢?”她问道。Moore希望人们少吃快餐,所以她向当地年轻学生教授健康饮食和烹饪。At Harlem Week, Moore represented GirlTrek, a national movement of Black women supporting health through walking. She said, "I feel like I should have left a long time ago, but something about Harlem draws me back to it."在哈莱姆周,Moore代表GirlTrek,这是一个通过步行支持健康的黑人女性全国运动。她说:“我觉得我早就应该离开,但哈莱姆有某种东西吸引我回到这里。”Moore continued, "Harlem is my beginning. Harlem is my future. Harlem is a huge part of what makes me who I am."Moore继续说道:“哈莱姆是我的起点。哈莱姆是我的未来。哈莱姆是让我成为今天的我的一个重要部分。”

I'm tired and lazy so here's the first few paragraphs of the movie from Wikipedia. Baby Geniuses is a 1999 American family comedy film directed by Bob Clark and written by Clark and Greg Michael, from a story by Clark, Steven Paul, Francisca Matos, and Robert Grasmere. It stars Kathleen Turner, Christopher Lloyd, Kim Cattrall, Peter MacNicol, and Ruby Dee. The film has the distinction of being the first full-length feature to use computer-generated imagery for the synthesis of human visual speech. 2D warping techniques were used to digitally animate the mouth viseme shapes of the babies which were originally shot with their mouths closed. The viseme shapes were sampled from syllables uttered by the babies on the set. Baby Geniuses was almost universally panned by critics, who lambasted its acting, humor, special effects, writing, and directing, but it grossed $36.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $12 million. In 2004, it was followed by a sequel, Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2, which was a box office bomb, and received even worse critical reviews, receiving a nomination for Worst Picture at the 25th Golden Raspberry Awards. throwbacktheaterpodcast@gmail.com

Movie Synopsis: American Gangster is a 2007 American biographical crime film directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by Steven Zaillian. The film is fictionally based on the criminal career of Frank Lucas, a gangster from La Grange, North Carolina who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service planes returning from the Vietnam War, before being detained by a task force led by Newark Detective Richie Roberts. The film stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe with co-stars Ted Levine, John Ortiz, Josh Brolin, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ruby Dee, Lymari Nadal and Cuba Gooding Jr. Development for the film initially began in 2000, when Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment purchased the rights to a New York magazine story about the rise and fall of Lucas. Two years later, screenwriter Steven Zaillian introduced a 170-page scriptment to Scott. Original production plans were to commence in Toronto for budget purposes; however, production eventually relocated permanently to New York City. Because of the film's rising budget Universal canceled production in 2004. After negotiations with Terry George, it was later revived with Scott at the helm in March 2005. Principal photography commenced over a period of five months from July to December 2006; filming took place throughout New York City and concluded in Thailand.

If ever there was a week to talk about the importance of physical media it is this one. Especially with the number of oddball titles you will probably never see on a streaming service. Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress to talk some of these rare titles including Alan Ladd as Jay Gatsby, a Paris cat man, Michael Parks in love with Ann-Margret, an old Jane Fonda film recently making headlines and a film written by Ruby Dee. There are also your general weird titles like perhaps a couple of the best films made by Roland Emmerich and Jason Statham as well as Peter's choice for the best film transition in cinema history. Over six decades later, he's played hundreds of characters in film, TV and on-stage, including work as an acclaimed writer, producer and director – both in theater and television. His acting career started as a 12-year-old, when friend of the family—esteemed playwright, Lorraine Hansberry—asked permission from his mother to star alongside Sydney Poitier, Louis Gosset Jr. and Ruby Dee in the original Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun. But it was his movie role in 1975's Cooley High, that he admits to I SEE U of his defining moment as an actor. Join us as host Eddie Robinson chats candidly with celebrated actor, Glynn Turman. Movie review time. Swigs coffee………… I need to, or this will just sound proper and normal, and that simply just won't do. Today we start with a cheeky one, it's $'s, or dollar sign the movie, or as it stands now, (Dollars 1971). Wait it's still dollar sign the movie on IMDB $. Anyway it stars Warren Beatty, Goldie Hawn, and Robert Wagner, in a plot that involves money, hijinks, and car crashes, and I'm just guessing. Next up we have (Buck and the preacher 1972). This one has has the amazing duo of Sidney Poitier, and Harry Belafonte, who have both recently passed within just about a year of each other. Ruby DEE is here as well in this epic cinematic take on a not often looked at part of our american history. Look at it in the eye and yer gonna get a black eye. Comin in hot is (Trick baby 1972). This one deserves to be showcased someday, it knocked our socks off, annnnnnnnnd it has the guy from the Bride of re-animator in it. Emory from the boys in the band is here in our next film to be reviewed today, (Cops and robbers 1973) you may also remember Emory A.K.A. Cliff Gorman in such films as ghost dog, and all that Jazz, he's a keeper for me and so is this movie. (The night porter 1974) is up next and though it looked very intriguing I'm pretty sure it gets a do not recommend from all of us, which dammit, can of course make it sound more intriguing. Listen, you'll see. Hell yes film fans KHAAAAAAAAAAAN is here in our next film (Won ton ton: The dog who saved Hollywood 1976), Madeline Kahn that is. Terri Garr and Bruce flipping Dern are here too, we can't lose! Finally today we end our offering with yet another Carol Burnett made for t.v. film. (Friendly fire 1979) This one's directed by David Greene. Check out our epic showcase of his Jesus acid fest classic Godspell, the one where Victory wonders why we showcased flipping Godspell. Also we'll all see his name again soon in our coverage of the mini series Roots. Well that's the reviews and I've officially had waaaaaay too much coffee. Thanks for listening.

In this episode, we investigate the exceptional existence of Ruby Dee, a lady of numerous gifts, from verse to theater, activism to playwriting. We dig into her initial life, experiencing childhood in Harlem, and her affection for narrating, which drove her to performing expressions. We examine her noteworthy accomplishments in theater, remembering her job for "A Raisin in the Sun," the main play composed by a person of color to be delivered on Broadway. Not only that, but we discuss her activism and her cozy associations with Social equality pioneers Malcolm X and Martin Luther Ruler, Jr. Ultimately, we investigate her change to television acting and her wonderful heritage in media outlets. All through her profession, Dee separated obstructions and made critical commitments to both artistic expression and the Social equality development.Ruby Dee was a remarkable woman who made an indelible impact on American culture and society. Born in 1922, she grew up in Harlem, New York, at a time when America was still segregated. Despite the challenges she faced, Dee was determined to pursue her passion for the performing arts, and she became an accomplished actor, poet, playwright, and activist.Dee's love of storytelling began at a young age, and she earned a degree in Romance languages to hone her skills. However, it was her apprenticeship at the American Negro Theatre that solidified her love of the performing arts. During her time there, she met and formed connections with other up-and-coming actors, including Hilda Simms and Sidney Poitier.Dee's first big break came in 1946, when she landed a role in the all-black Broadway production of "Anna Lucasta." The play was a major success, running for almost 1000 performances, and it helped to launch Dee's career as an actor. She went on to appear in several other plays, including the groundbreaking "A Raisin in the Sun," which was the first Broadway play written by a black woman.Dee's success on stage led to opportunities in Hollywood, and she became known for her roles in films such as "The Jackie Robinson Story" and "Buck and the Preacher." However, Dee never forgot her roots in the theater, and she continued to perform on stage throughout her career. In fact, she made history as the first black actress to play a lead role in the American Shakespeare Festival.Dee's activism was an integral part of her life, and she used her platform as a performer to advocate for Civil Rights. Along with her husband, the actor and activist Ossie Davis, she was a close friend and ally of leaders such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Dee and Davis were arrested for protesting the shooting of Amadou Diallo in 1999 and signed the 2003 proclamation "Not in Our Name" in opposition to the U.S. invasion of Iraq.Throughout her life, Dee remained committed to using her talents and her voice to effect change in the world. She was a true pioneer for black women in the arts, and her legacy continues to inspire and empower people today.Visual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante
In this week's episode of the Black Girl Nerds podcast we chat with actor Ayesha Harris of 'Daisy Jones and the Six' and filmmaker Muta' Ali of 'Cassius X: Becoming Ali'. Segment 1: Born and raised in the Long Beach and Inland Empire areas of southern California, Ayesha lived many lives before pursuing a career in acting full time. Ayesha can next be seen in the upcoming Amazon Prime miniseries “Daisy Jones and the Six,” opposite Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, and Suki Waterhouse. Adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid's wildly popular historical fiction novel of the same name, the series follows the rise and fall of a fictional LA rock band in the 1970s – in the guise of Fleetwood Mac – while exploring the reason behind their split at the height of their success. Host: Ryanne Segment 2: Muta'Ali is an award winning film director whose latest feature documentary release is Cassius X: Becoming Ali. He received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Best Director of a Documentary for his critically acclaimed Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn and his feature documentary debut was Life's Essentials with Ruby Dee, featuring Harry Belafonte, Alan Alda, Phylicia Rashad, Spike Lee and others. Spike Lee's third film, released in 1989, presented a day-in-the-life portrait of a neighborhood: Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, on the hottest day of the year. Boasting an all-star cast including Lee, Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, and Samuel L. Jackson, along with the feature film debuts of Martin Lawrence and Rosie Perez, the film was a hit at Cannes and a critical and commercial success. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, its release was also marked by controversy over its content and depictions of racism, with some commentators expressing the fear that audiences might riot after seeing it. More than thirty years after its release, the message of the film is starkly relevant. Join us as we try to do right by Do the Right Thing. The start of an exciting series on the main show celebrating Black movies of the 1970s all throughout February and into the first week of March due to our big milestone 250th episode falling right in the middle of the month. Morgan and Jeannine are here today back talking one of the show's favourites, Sidney Poitier with his directorial debut and starring alongside his longtime friend Harry Belafonte and Ruby Dee in the revisionist, stylish western BUCK AND THE PREACHER (1972)! Certainly the most mainstream, widely shown and highly budgeted Black western up to this point in movie history; there's so much interesting background to get into surrounding this and its place in the boom of early 70s Black cinema, while having a lot of really interesting and impressive things to talk about within the movie itself! In this chapter, I discuss with the Caldwells their college love story that led to marriage. We discussed a range of topics such as how to overcome some challenges that married couples face, how to balance career and family life, couples that have been an influence on their marriage, and recommendations for couples who are looking to transition to marriage. Despite what the media says about African American relationships there are great examples that set the standard for (love). I hope that this chapter inspires those who have the desire to get married or married couples who may need a reminder of why they chose marriage. This chapter is dedicated to Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee who wrote the book, "In this life together." Black marriage is for the (culture). I do not own the interpretation of the music used in this chapter. This week we're coming to you live from the NIVA conference in Cleveland, sharing a keynote conversation between LP and Shahida Mausi, President/CEO of the Right Productions. Shahida Mausi has built a career in cultural and entertainment programming designed to serve the public. In 1996 she formed The Right Productions, Inc. (TRP). The company has managed and operated the 6,000-seat Chene Park Amphitheater, providing food and beverage service, security, parking, and other aspects of major event production since 2004. Under her direction Chene Park has increased events and attendance annually, serving approximately 100,000 in 2010.As the president of TRP, Ms. Mausi has created national award-winning marketing promotions, gained and sustained relationships with such clients as MGM Grand Detroit Casino, The City of Detroit, and the Greektown Casino. In addition, The Right Productions has provided talent and production services for special events, including the Super Bowl XL Winter Blast, Detroit 300, the Detroit Music Festival, and Movement – Detroit's Electronic Music Festival.Ms. Mausi has produced and booked concerts with great artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Della Reese, Little Richard, Nina Simone, Deepak Chopra, Herbie Hancock, Judith Jamison, Fela, Jill Scott, Mary J.
