Charles and Jon talk to conservationist Bill Robichaud, best known for his work to protect what many would argue is the world's most enigmatic mammal: the Saola.Saolas - a beautifully marked 100kg bovid - are often referred to as the 'Asian Unicorn' because of their scimitar-like horns and rarity. The species, first discovered by scientists in 1992 in the mountains of Vietnam, is one of the most stunning zoological discoveries of the past 100 years. Bill has dedicated his career to trying to learn more about - and protect - them, including helping to set up the IUCN's Saola Working Group and the Saola Foundation. In a fascinating conversation he talks about how the species was first discovered, and the handful of live animals that have been seen since. He offers hope for the species' survival and what more might be done to save them from extinction. For more information visit www.mammalwatching.com/podcastNotes: There are plenty of interviews with Bill online including this video of a talk he made in 2015. Before talking to Bill we had a chat with fellow mammalwatcher Greg Easton, who has submitted several trip reports over the years including this guide to the mammals of Yellowstone. Cover Art: Saola.Dr Charles Foley is a mammalwatcher and biologist who, together with his wife Lara, spent 30 years studying elephants in Tanzania. Comment analyser une start-up ? The Annamite striped rabbit: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week's topic is a remarkable hoofed animal suggested last year by Elaine, the saola, and another remarkable animal I learned about while researching the saola. Both animals are newly discovered by science. The scientific story of the saola starts in May of 1992. The Southeast Asian country of Vietnam had established a new nature reserve a few years before and wanted to learn more about the kinds of animals and plants living there. A team of scientists surveyed the area and one of the things they found was a skull with horns they didn't recognize. The horns were long and straight and very close together. They knew the skull came from an animal new to science, so they tried to find one to see what it looked like alive. But they couldn't find one. It wasn't until 1998 that a scientist saw a live saola, a female captured by hunters and kept in captivity until it died a few weeks later. The saola is an antelope-like bovid that looks a lot like an oryx. We talked about the Arabian oryx in episode 218 and there are other species of oryx that live in parts of Africa. Oryx have long, straight horns that grow side by side too. But genetic analysis of saola remains indicates that the saola is much more closely related to cattle than to oryxes. The saola was described formally in 1993 and placed in its own genus, Pseudoryx, meaning false oryx. The saola stands about 3 feet tall at the shoulder, or 92 centimeters, and is mostly chocolate brown with white markings on the head and a black stripe down its spine. Both males and females have horns, although males grow longer horns. The horns grow side by side, usually only a few inches apart, or about 8 or 9 centimeters, and are dark brown or black. They grow up to about 20 inches long, or 50 centimeters, and are often about the same distance apart at their tips as they are at the base of the skull. People sometimes call the saola the Asian unicorn because it's so rare and its horns look sort of like unicorn horns, although they grow back from the skull instead of forward and aren't spiral shaped. So, not actually very much like unicorn horns. The saola also has a short tail, slender legs, and a short muzzle, but its tongue is over 6 inches long, or 15 centimeters. It's rough like a cat's tongue and it uses it to groom itself, just like a cat, and to help it gather the plants it eats, unlike a cat. It lives in forested mountains and migrates to lower elevations in winter, although its fur is thick and soft to keep it warm in higher elevations. It also has special pores around its eyes that secrete a special fluid it uses to mark plants and rocks the way many antelopes do. Because the saola hasn't been observed in the wild, we don't know if it's marking its territory or just letting other saola know where it is. The saola is critically endangered, mostly due to poaching. A team of forest guards patrols the park looking for traps that hunters set. Poachers often hunt animals in the park not because the hunters are hungry but because they can make a lot of money selling exotic animals to other countries as so-called medicine. The saola isn't considered to have any medicinal uses, though, so while a hunter will sometimes kill one to eat, mostly it just gets caught in traps set for other animals. Since it's so rare to start with, every saola killed in this way could ultimately cause the entire species to go extinct.
With fewer than 50 animals in the wild, saola is possibly the most threatened mammal on the planet. Even though it was discovered in 1992, very little is known about it, as no biologist has ever seen it in the wild and there are only a handful of photos of it from camera traps – last one from 2013. To save the animal from extinction, the Saola Foundation for Annamite Mountains Conservation wants to lead an intensive search for the last saolas in order to capture them for a breeding program. William Robichaud, the president of the organization, talks about: Why saola was discovered so late Why saola is on the brink of extinction Why it is so hard to find saola Why captive breeding program is necessary for the survival of saola How saola search can benefit other endangered species What methods they want to use to find and capture saolas How to effectively protect nature in the Annamite Mountains William Robichaud has been working on wildlife conservation in Laos and Vietnam for more than 25 years. In 2006, he co-founded the IUCN Saola Working Group, and served as its Coordinator until 2019. In 2015, the IUCN Species Survival Commission recognized Bill with its Harry Messel Award for Conservation Leadership, for his contributions to Saola conservation. Charles Foley and Jon Hall's second part of their interview with George Schaller, widely regarded as the planet's greatest living field biologist. Some follow a career in wildlife biology and dream of discovering new species. Others of uncovering new information on our most charismatic animals. While some yearn to make a genuine impact on conservation. George Schaller has made enormous contributions in all of these areas in a career spanning 70 years. His pioneering work with Mountain Gorillas showed the world for the first time that they were a gentle - not savage - species, and it paved the way for Dian Fossey to begin her work. He went on to work with a set of mammalwatching bucket list species from Snow Leopards and Tigers through Giant Pandas and Gobi Bears. In the early 1990s he helped discover the Saola - the "Asian unicorn" - in Laos, and one of the most remarkable species discoveries of the 20th Century. He has also helped set up over 20 protected areas including the 200,000 square mile Changtang Nature Reserve on the Tibetan plateau. He has won countless awards and written 15 books, one of which - on Lions - won the USA's National Book Award. Legendary does not do him justice. For more information visit www.mammalwatching.com/podcastNotes: Here is an article on Schaller's life and career. He has written hundreds of magazine articles and Op Eds, like this one with Peter Zahler (who we interviewed in Episode 6 of this podcast) and there are many more references in his wikipedia entry. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/y8aoefvz Apology to Joanne Hayes and her family. Leithscéal gafa le Joanne Hayes agus a muintir. The Garda Commissioner and the Minister for Justice have apologized to Joanne Hayes, the woman who was wrongfully accused of murdering her child 35 years ago. Tá leithscéal gafa ag Coimisinéir an Gharda Síochána agus ag an Aire Dlí agus Cirt le Joanne Hayes, an bhean ar cuireadh ina leith go héagórach gur dhúnmharaigh sí a leanbh 35 bliain ó shin. It was also confirmed that some of the findings of the tribunal set up in the Kerry Children's case were unfounded. Dearbhaíodh freisin nach raibh aon bhunús le cuid de na torthaí a bhí ag an mbinse fiosrúcháin a cuireadh ar bun maidir le cás Leanaí Chiarraí. Among those findings, Joanne Hayes and her family were said to be telling lies. I measc na dtorthaí sin, dúradh go raibh bréaga á n-insint ag Joanne Hayes agus a muintir. Joanne Hayes, her sister, Kathleen and her brothers, Michael and Edmund, were arrested in May 1984. Gabhadh Joanne Hayes, a deirfiúr, Kathleen agus a deartháireacha, Michael agus Edmund, i mí na Bealtaine 1984. The apology arrested today before Judge Leonie Reynolds is part of a settlement of damages taken by the Hayes family. Tá an leithscéal a gabhadh inniu os comhair an Bhreithimh Leonie Reynolds mar chuid de shocrú ar dhamáistí a bhí tógtha ag muintir Hayes. Senior state attorney Conleth Bradley said today that the state regretted what had happened to the family. Dúirt an t- abhcóide sinsearach ar son an stáit, Conleth Bradley, inniu go raibh áiféala ar an stát faoin méid a tharla don teaghlach. Joanne Hayes was arrested during an inquiry into the body of a child found on a beach in County Kerry in 1984. Gabhadh Joanne Hayes le linn fiosrúcháin maidir le corp linbh a dtángthas air ar thrá i gContae Chiarraí i 1984. Joanne Hayes was 25 at the time and lived 75 kilometers from where the body was found. Bhí Joanne Hayes 25 ag an am agus bhí cónaí uirthi 75 ciliméadar ón áit ar aimsíodh an corp. A baby was born to her shortly before the body was discovered. Saolaíodh leanbh di go gairid sula dtángthas ar an gcorp. But that child died and the body was placed on the farm of the Hayes family. Ach fuair an leanbh sin bás agus cuireadh an corp ar fheirm mhuintir Hayes. The Gardaí accused her of having both children; the child on the beach and the child who had been placed on the farm and charged with murder. Chuir na Gardai ina leith gur saolaíodh an bheirt leanaí di; an leanbh ar an trá agus an leanbh a bhí curtha ar an bhfeirm agus cúisíodh í i ndúnmharú. The case did not go to court, but a Kerry Children 's Tribunal was set up. Níor tháinig an cás os comhair na cúirte, ach cuireadh Binse Fiosrúcháin Leanaí Chiarraí ar bun. But instead of focusing on the Garda inquiry, the tribunal focused on Joanne Hayes' conduct and private life. Ach seachas díriu ar fhiosrúchán na nGardai, díríodh sa bhinse fiosrúcháin ar iompar agus ar shaol príobháideach Joanne Hayes. No one has ever been charged in the murder of the child whose body was found on the beach. Níor cúisíodh aon duine riamh i ndúnmharú an linbh a dtángthas ar a chorp ar an trá. That child died as a result of his stabbing. Fuair an leanbh sin bás de bharr a sháite.
Hello welcome to wild Suzhou today we will be talking about thesaola. The saola is a rare animal that lives in the dense forests ofVietnam and Laos. This place is perfect for the saola considering it's aherbivore meaning it's diet consists of only plants. They eat stuff such as figleaves, fruits, and berries. They spend their time by the riverbank looking for food. Theirhabitat also has long rainy seasons and are usually found in elevationsfrom 400-750 which is relatively high. Saola look like deer, except they have long horns, which has giventhem the nickname “Asian unicorn”, unlike sole other animals with horns though, both males and females have horns. Saola should use horns to defend themselves. They are about 150 cm long and 80 cm to their shoulders. Theyweigh about 80-100 kgs when fully grown, they are mostly brown but have whitesplotches along their face, neck, and hooves. The animal was only discovered 30 years ago but already has adeclining population. They are listed as critically endangered and conservationprograms are trying to increase their population. Like most other animals witha decreasing population, the reason for this decline is because of hunting andloss of habitat. Saola also don't do well in captivity so making scientificobservations of them is hard. Their lifespan is expected to be around 11 butwhen in captivity is much shorter. What do you think could help gather more info about this animal? For wild Suzhou I'm palmtree and thank you for listening.
