On 28th February 2024, Wakeel Hassan, Uttarakhand Tunnel rescue hero once again made headlines when his house was razed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).  The demolition of Hassan's house was the most recent in the spate of evictions across the country. There have been questions over why the government disproportionately targets working-class and minority community people such as Wakeel Hassan. Here is an extended cut of an interview with Dr. Ghazala Jamil from an episode of the Suno India Show where Suno India's Menaka Rao reported on the aftermath of the April 2022 Jahangirpuri riot followed by a demolition drive. A very interesting study at Hebrew University found that the brain inflates numbers under some circumstances. University psychologists called this a “diversity illusion”.Israelis and American students were asked to assess the size of minorities—Arabs and African Americans—among them. In both cases, people believed there were far more people from the minority than there actually were.Researchers concluded that this is due to the mind's tendency to focus on and amplify that which is out of the ordinary. In one experiment Jewish students estimated the percentage of Arabs in the student body at 31% and Arab students said, 35%. Only 12% of students were Arab.A similar experiment with American participants about the number of African American faces in a grid of 100 photographs yielded similar results—40% against 25%.To be sure they ran the tests again and again, same results. I ran this test at home with a European house guest—exactly the same result.Psychologists concluded that such overestimation of minority numbers, results from innate intolerance. Most reasonable people want to live in an equitable society. By and large most of them find themselves in the centre of a larger political equation. And that political equation includes  the participation of those who are not a  part of the majority of voters. While people in the minority generally get a pretty good understanding of the majority, it is good civics, that the majority should get a better understanding of the people among us who are of a different persuasion. The active verb in persuasion is to persuade. There are many forms of persuasion—from coaxing to coercion. And when gentle persuasion turns into  political propaganda and jingoist rhetoric, the thinking of a good section of the polity is influenced enough to swing from the middle towards any one extreme. And soon people arrive at all manners of ugly consensus and  illogical conclusions. My guest today is Ghazala Wahab the author of a news-making book, Born A Muslim.Reading some of the reviews of her book, I got the impression that many reviewers fell to assuming that Ghazala wrote her book to protest the growing sentiment being manufactured against the muslim minority. The interviews that I read or heard, seem to approach their subject with a premeditated woke-ness. To be candid, I first approached the book the same way. I thought it would seek to educate non-muslims about the religion and practices of Islam with the underlying appeal for a more compassionate appreciation of an increasingly marginalized people. But reading the book set me straight. Ghazala's book takes the argument inwards…a muslim speaking to fellow muslims introspectively. It is written without any of the sentimental—and at times, even plaintive—hooks that so easily and so often define the texts of marginalized or dispossessed people. And to add to that Ghazala is Editor of Force India, a magazine about national security, principally defence matters. And she co-authored the book, Dragon On Our Doorstep: Managing China Through Military Power. After I read Born A Muslim, I couldn't wait to speak to the author. So here she is.ABOUT GHAZALA WAHABA journalist since 1994, Ghazala has authored Born a Muslim: Some Truths About Islam in India and co-authored Dragon on our Doorstep: Managing China Through Military Power with Pravin Sawhney, with whom she founded FORCE magazine.Buy Born A Muslim here: https://amzn.to/3H1L92oWHAT'S THAT WORD?! - COAXINGCo-host Pranati "Pea" Madhav joins Ramjee Chandran in the segment "What's That Word?", where they discuss the medieval origins of the word.WANT TO BE ON THE SHOW?Reach us by mail: theliterarycity@explocity.com .

They also discuss Ghazala's ongoing work on the impacts of land-use change on natural ecosystems and community-based ecotourism in the mid-Himalayan region of India. Violence against Muslims has escalated in different parts of the country. The recent incident of many houses belonging two Muslims in Tripura being burnt down, is the latest in a long series of attacks that begin in 2014. Add to that, the many new legislative measures to marginalize the community, such as the Citizens Amendment Act and the so-called 'Love Jihad Law' in Uttar Pradesh. The coming elections in UP may have something to do with it, but this anti-minority campaign goes much deeper than that.On this episode, Sidharth is joined by Ghazala Wahab, Executive Editor of FORCE magazine, who just published her new book 'Born a Muslim: Some Truths About Islam in India'. The book explores some of the issues mentioned above, and brings together history, politics, and Ghazal's own personal stories. Some of the stories are quite distressing and discomforting, but they make essential reading because it gives a perspective and insight into what could happen to any Muslim - from middle-class, upper-middle class to the marginalised and the poor. The book is extremely relevant in these fraught times.Follow Ghazala on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ghazalawahabFollow Sidharth Bhatia on Twitter and Instagram @bombaywallah.You can listen to this show on The Wire's website, the IVM Podcasts website, app on Android: https://ivm.today/android or iOS: https://ivm.today/ios, or any other podcast app.

Who are the Indian Muslims? Are they a monolithic community practising a faith alien to India? Or are they a diverse people, geographically rooted in the cultural ethos of the land? Is there an ‘Indian Islam'? In this episode of BIC Talks, author Ghazala Wahab in a conversation with historian Rajmohan Gandhi takes a clear-eyed look at every aspect of Islam in India today.  Weaving together personal memoir, history, reportage, scholarship, and interviews with a wide variety of people, Ghazala's book Born a Muslim highlights how an apathetic and sometimes hostile government attitude and prejudice at all levels of society have contributed to Muslim vulnerability and insecurity. This conversation is an extract from a BIC Streams event.

Tolerance between religions has been a defining value of Indianness. And yet, this sentiment has been shaken in recent years. WhatsApp groups are flooded with forwards spreading blatantly false narratives with an intent to communalize Indian society. So in this episode, we speak with author Ghazala Wahab about her latest book Born a Muslim. In this episode we talk to Dr Ghazala Aziz-Scott. More about Dr Aziz-Scott I have been an NHS General Practitioner for over 2 decades in a large multidisciplinary group practice in West London, and I have extensive experience in using bioidentical hormones within the functional medicine approach to treating hormone conditions, such as perimenopause, menopause, andropause, HPA (adrenal) axis dysfunction and thyroid disorders. I am an expert in tailoring hormone treatments in a range of formulations to provide individualised treatment regimes for patients. My scientific training has been rigorous, having completed my undergraduate degree from the University of Cambridge. I was awarded a prize scholarship in Physiology after my 1st year and graduated with a Masters in Neuroscience, Medical Ethics and Law. I transferred to New College, University of Oxford for my clinical training where I also completed my specialist GP training scheme, gaining membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) in 1995. I became a partner in General Practice in 1998, and am a highly experienced clinician in the full spectrum of the human condition. Working with a diverse population for this length of time, I have witnessed at first hand the multifactorial nature of what causes ill health, the interplay in a patient's life and the importance of continuity of care. I have a particular interest in how adverse childhood events and trauma impact our neurobiology and subsequent health, furthering my training in this area. The mind-body connection constantly fascinates me. The holistic approach to treating patients is one to which I have always been drawn. I have a natural curiosity about a patient's personal story with respect to how physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions impact the experience of health and wellness. I believe in the individualised approach and that trust, empathy and communication are the foundations of an effective consultation. Patients need to be empowered to understand their own narrative and work in partnership for optimal health. The second part of this inspiring interview with Jorgen Tranberg and Ghazala Jabeen is a great opportunity to hear more about the Next Generation Research Center and how it will promote research, sustainability and compassion. Working across four interdisciplinary research areas – medicine, environment, ecological sustainability and education the NRGC will create a community based on shared core values of compassion, cooperation and consciousness and work on the initial center in Cyprus has already begun. This is a great opportunity to hear from the founders about the vision and how to get involved.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Whatever we do we are doing for the next generations The idea was to build a research city in the most beautiful surroundings What would business be if compassion was applied? What would society be if the infrastructure was built on compassion? There is much research about how compassion positively influences businesses The research work will be over four areas - education, energy and energy and environment. This is about a global movement to change the world The research centre is the hub of the community One person can have a dream but its people coming together that makes it happen Many people are in a state of stress just trying to get by day to day When people have the opportunity for peace of mind and to be able to breath When you invest in bricks and mortar you have something of your own and this is a chance to invest in the future If don't like  what you are  doing it creates  stress if you love what you do it's a passion We want to empower young people with the tools they need to achieve what they want to in life There are opportunities for everyone to be a part of it we want to welcome everyone   BEST MOMENTS ‘I'm acting for the next generations' ‘Every person I spoke to wanted to be involved and that's when you know you have something very special' ‘We are empowering people to learn more'    VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series    Next Generation Research Center   ABOUT THE GUESTS Jorgen Tranberg The Founder, CEO and The Visionary Jorgen has over 36 years of work experience in complementary medicine both as a Physician and a worldwide Educator. -He is the owner of NGRC, a visionary, project initiator and responsible for the overall planning and idea generation. Everybody matters and everyone has a value. People have wants and needs and everyone is a lifelong learner and unless people have figured out what their values are then they can become overwhelmed At this time in the world people need to stop and ask themselves where they are and what makes them happy. In this episode Alex, Jorgen and Ghazala explore compassion and community and how everyone has a part to play. Everyone has to take action to create what they want and have the right people around them.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Now there are many opportunities for people to turn their dreams into reality. Compassion is something I have been teaching for many years I realised I had the skills it was just about reaching people. When you look at things as microparticles you realise it's all just a flow of energy. The most important thing in life is to conscious about the type of people you have around you. If people understood more about being conscious then there would be fewer illnesses. You have to make sure you are taking responsibility for yourself. Your environment is key. There are a lot of people who are not happy with their lives. I believe everything is energy and it's how we direct the energy with our actions. You can also reflect stillness and this also gives information about you If you do something you need to honour what you are good at. There is a challenge that has begun the journey and drives the goals for success. There is a pattern of becoming complacent and priorities can shift You need to be mindful of where other people are.   BEST MOMENTS ‘It's about when you can see the possibilities' ‘About 90% of people break through some sort of challenge' ‘Why do we have to be rock bottom before we rise up?'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series      ABOUT THE GUESTS Jorgen Tranberg The Founder, CEO and The Visionary Jorgen has over 36 years of work experience in complementary medicine both as a Physician and a worldwide Educator. -He is the owner of NGRC, a visionary, project initiator and responsible for the overall planning and idea generation.

Ghazala, was born in 1963, in Lahore, Pakistan, when still a baby, her family moved to London and she grew up in Twickenham. She has led an active life, being involved in rock-climbing, mountaineering, running, skiing and swimming, both in the UK and abroad. She loves the outdoors and now lives in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District. She is married to the mountaineer Roger Mear, who in 1986, with Robert Swan and Gareth Wood, made the first unsupported walk to the South Pole with the expedition ‘In the Footsteps of Scott’. For this achievement, all three members were awarded the Queen’s Polar Medal.   In 1996, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and had a year off work for chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Focusing on the positive aspects and being determined to be well, both physically and emotionally, helped her through that year. Having been a keen long distance runner, and never accepting that she would be anything other than recovered after her treatment, the following year with a 30% reduction in lung function, she ran the Sheffield Marathon. The whole experience, despite the difficulties, was positive for Ghazala and it enabled her to develop resilience, determination, humility, compassion and patience.
