Pub rock may not be as well-known as punk or new wave, but its impact on rock history is impossible to ignore. Emerging in the UK during the early 1970s, pub rock rejected the excesses of glam and progressive rock in favor of a raw, back-to-basics approach that brought musicians and audiences closer together. In this episode of Booked On Rock, author Mark Wilkerson discusses his book Pub Rock (Genre: A 33 1/3 Series) and the vibrant scene that helped reshape the future of popular music.Mark explores the origins of pub rock, its key artists—including Dr. Feelgood, Brinsley Schwarz, and Kilburn and the High Roads—and how the movement laid the groundwork for punk, new wave, and countless bands that followed. Discover why this short-lived but influential genre remains one of the most important and overlooked chapters in rock history.Purchase a copy of Pub RockFollow Mark Wilkerson:FacebookInstagram----------

Last Days

On February 2, 1979, Sid Vicious — the sneering, self-destructive bassist of the Sex Pistols whose reckless persona became synonymous with the chaos and nihilism of punk rock — died of a heroin overdose in New York City at the age of 21, just months after the stabbing death of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, at the Chelsea Hotel. Together, Vicious and Spungen embodied the darkest extremes of the late-1970s punk movement: volatile, addicted, fiercely codependent, and consumed by a relationship that blurred the line between love and mutual destruction. Spungen, a deeply troubled young woman drawn to the underground music scene, became both muse and scapegoat within punk culture, while Vicious's meteoric rise from London misfit to international antihero masked profound instability beneath the sneer and swagger. Their tragic spiral through violence, fame, and heroin addiction culminated in one of rock history's most infamous deaths, cementing the pair as enduring symbols of punk's seductive rebellion and catastrophic excess. OBSCURE SOUNDS 2013 - EDITOR “Subway” provides a glimpse of '80s synth-pop nonchalance, like how The Pet Shop Boys did and continue to do. The vocal delivery is instantly hypnotic, a hushed spoken-word approach that resembles a slowed-down version of the verses within Pet Shop Boys' “Rent”. Underneath this exists tightly constructed warbles of synths; a popping synth plays hopscotch with a robotic kick drum, as a looser key-laden melody adds appreciated spontaneity. The lyrics love the use of non-sequitur, but they concoct a stoned serenity nonetheless: “I love Sex Pistols ‘cuz they're fun, I love to dance when I'm drunk.” The words tend to drift in and out like drunken ramblings. It's raining out, and you had a few too many. There won't be another train for an hour or two. Might as well take another from the flask. It's bleak and lonesome, but purely intoxicating regardless. Mark Moreno and Norwegian electronic group Flunk have made a great collaboration with “Subway”, a culmination of various electronic veterans who have been at it for decades.

In this unflinching, hilarious, and brutally honest conversation, Philip isn't here to mourn the "good old days." He's here to diagnose exactly why London is disappearing and why your favourite club probably deserved to close. From the dance floors of the Sombrero and early punk hangout Club Louise to the birth of the Mud Club, Philip recalls his encounters with Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLaren, Sid Vicious, and the so-called Bromley Contingent — and he pulls no punches. He explains why he was "too old" for the Sex Pistols at 23, why he chose to turn down drugs in favour of "real happiness," and why the first VIP room arrived the same year as Margaret Thatcher. If you're looking for nostalgia, go elsewhere. In this episode, Charles interviews filmmaker and vinyl enthusiast Steve Herold, best known for the award-winning short film Death of an Umbrella Salesman. Steve takes us back to the summer of 1984 and his first concert — the Thompson Twins on their Into the Gap tour at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey. He shares how the show almost didn't happen, thanks to a failed attempt to see Van Halen at Madison Square Garden, and how that near-miss planted the seed for a lifetime of concert-going. The real coming-of-age concert moment, Steve admits, came two years later when he finally saw David Lee Roth on his debut solo tour — a far wilder introduction to arena rock than the Thompson Twins had provided. Steve opens up about his most memorable concert experiences, including his best-ever shows: the New Jersey alternative band Dramarama at the legendary Fast Lane in Asbury Park in the early '90s. Those packed, sweat-soaked club nights — where getting to the bathroom was nearly impossible and crowd surfing was mandatory — turned Steve into a devoted fan and shaped his love of small-venue rock. He also recounts the 1996 Sex Pistols reunion at New York's Roseland Ballroom, an evening of full-on debauchery that ended with him and a friend finding a $50 bill on the floor — money that had fallen from the pockets of crowd surfers — and heading out to continue the night on someone else's dime. The image of punk-show attendees pouring out of Roseland and colliding with Broadway theatergoers on the sidewalk is one of the episode's most vivid moments. Beyond concerts, the conversation dives into Steve's YouTube channel, where he has spent years showcasing his vinyl and CD collection and visiting independent record stores during his travels for TV production work. He reflects on how the channel introduced him to a whole new community of fellow collectors — friendships that have taken him to record stores in Reno, Southern California, Long Island, and Charleston, South Carolina. Steve also discusses his filmmaking work, including the upcoming documentary about a former Hot Tuna drummer who is also a visual artist, and two music videos he directed for his friend's garage rock band Manflesh, one of which is set to screen at the Coney Island Film Festival. The episode wraps with a shared appreciation for the Wet Leg concert both Charles and Steve attended in 2025, and a laugh-out-loud detour into the chaotic legacy of G.G. Allin. BANDS: Agent Orange, David Lee Roth, Dramarama, Eagles, G.G. Allin & the Murder Junkies, Goldfinger, Hot Tuna, Jeff the Brotherhood, L7, Lady Gaga, Manflesh, Ram Jam, Sex Pistols, The Strokes, Thompson Twins, Van Halen, Wet Leg, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. “I am a professional cliffhanger.  Peddling adventure is my business, and at times it's a mighty lean one.  But the leanness is a part of it.  Going hungry and thirsty and weird places that aren't even marked on the map is part of it.  My specialty is magic, the forbidden arts.  Jadoo is my stock in trade.” – John A. Keel, JadooLong before ‘The Mothman Prophecies' there was ‘Jadoo'.  Barely out of his teens, John Keel set out across the world in search of magic: both fake -- and real.  He traveled alone through Egypt, Iraq and India, fighting off bandits, breaking bread with mystical holy men and dodging deadly cobras.  He was Indiana Jones before there was an Indiana Jones.  But instead of a whip, his iconic sidearm was his portable typewriter.  All of his adventuring was in service of his one true dream – becoming a writer.Richard shares this dream.  And in the summer of 1987, he too sets off on an adventure – armed only with a tattered copy of ‘Lonesome Dove' and a cassette tape of the Sex Pistols.  He's on the run – but whether it's toward something or away, he's not quite sure.  And after a life-changing weekend in Chicago, he wonders if the road he's been on his whole life might be about to change forever.Links:Buy Jadoo by John A. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded

Rat Scabies needs little introduction as the thunderous drummer of The Damned. His collaborator in One Thousand Motels, Chris Constantinou, has had a career that has taken him from the studio with Chas Chandler, to the Live Aid stage at Wembley with Adam Ant, and into the recording booth with Sinéad O’Connor. Rat and Chris describe how they first met through The Mutants, a collaborative project that assembled an unlikely roll-call of rock veterans including Wilco Johnson, Wayne Kramer and Norman Watt-Roy. That project proved too unwieldy to tour so they stripped it back, formed a two-man core, and called it One Thousand Motels. The result was 2% Out of Sync, an album that has taken almost six years to find its way onto vinyl, and into listeners’ hands. On the morning of October 12, 1978, the Chelsea Hotel looked like it always did after a long New York night, with its hallways dim, its air heavy, and its secrets still clinging to the walls, but behind the door to Room 100, one of the most infamous mysteries in rock-and-roll history was waiting to be found. Inside, twenty-year-old Nancy Spungen lay bleeding on the bathroom floor, her life ended by a single stab wound, while just feet away, her boyfriend—Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious—stumbled through the room in a haze of drugs, shock, and confusion. What happened in those final hours would become more than a tabloid scandal or a punk-rock tragedy; it would become a case suspended somewhere between love story, crime scene, and cultural collapse, where every witness had a different version, every answer seemed to raise a darker question, and the truth, if anyone ever knew it, may have died inside that room.SOURCES: 1) "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored History of Punk" by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain2) "Why We Love the Chelsea Hotel" -- The New York Historical Society3)Punk Rock Romeo and Juliet: Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen -- Crime Library4) Sid Vicious Accused of Murder -- Rolling Stone5) Flashback: Nancy Spungen Found Dead at Chelsea Hotel -- Rolling Stone6) The Arrest of Sid Vicious -- History Daily Podcast by Wondery7) Sid Vicious Biography Page8) Sid and Nancy: A Punk Mystery -- The Independent9) 16 Truly Disturbing Moments That Made Punk Rocker Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols Live Up to His Name10) My New York: Sid and Nancy -- The New York Post

TV Smith joins Nate to discuss the 50th anniversary of The Adverts, an Australian tour backed by The Hard-Ons, and a career full of great songs and terrible label luck. Topics Include: TV Smith is touring Australia in April with The Hard-Ons. The tour celebrates the 50th anniversary of The Adverts. The Hard-Ons are already learning the surprisingly complex Adverts songs. TV finds it odd but joyful to still be performing. He got back into vinyl to quality-check his own releases. Bowie, Roxy Music, and reggae were key early influences for TV. The Sex Pistols made TV believe he could actually do this. The Roxy Club punk scene started with just 30 people. Brian James of The Damned personally recommended The Adverts to Stiff. They recorded One Chord Wonders in a single afternoon at Pathway. Stiff misspelled the title and controversially centred Gaye Advert on the cover. Gary Gilmore's Eyes was TV's satirical response to exploitative media coverage. The BBC was deeply reluctant to air Gary Gilmore's Eyes on TV. Anchor Records collapsed mid-momentum, leaving The Adverts suddenly without a label. Crossing the Red Sea was recorded at Abbey Road with John Leckie. Gary Gilmore's Eyes was left off the album deliberately — vinyl runtime constraints. RCA signed them against their own A&R team's wishes — chaos followed. Cast of Thousands suffered a botched mix, a terrible cover, label indifference. Channel 5 was finally properly remastered after the producer found a safety tape. TV is bringing vinyl to the merch table — especially the Handwriting LP. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the force of acting posititivity (and good boy) that is ANSON BOON!As stated in the episode title, 'The Good Boy' (aka 'Heel' in the US) is out and about now, in which Anson plays alongside the powerful duo of Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough. Anson is capable of playing characters who aren't necessarily immediately charming, let's say, and some that might require a little work to warm to, but always make for some truly captivating and interesting, memorable performances which inspire conversation, debate and thought. So it goes without saying that this chat is an awesome one as Pip finds out where these choices originate, and traces the source of Anson's acting path. Of course there are so many facets and angles covered too, including basically becoming a fully functioning Sex Pistols tribute band by way of 'Pistol' (in which he was coached by Underworld!), his love of a film set, being a nepo gangster, the School of Kate Winslett, acting alongside Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine, Pierce Brosnan and so many more, and just a huge amount of fascinating goodies from his time in front of and nearby the camera. Left to their own devices, and with the Sex Pistols basically over, Sid and Nancy found their way to New York City. From room 100 of the Chelsea Hotel, they spent 1978 in a drug-fueled haze, with Nancy booking some gigs for Sid to keep them supplied with money to support their habits. On October 12, 1978, Sid awoke from a Tuinal-induced sleep and found Nancy dead on the bathroom floor, with a stab wound in her abdomen. He was arrested and charged with her murder, but didn't live long enough to stand trial. Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose on February 2, 1979, though the specifics of his final dose remain a subject of speculation. The Clash: The Only Band That Matters

Bassment Sessions

London in the mid-seventies was not a comfortable place to be young. Unemployment was climbing, the National Front was gaining ground on the streets, and the music coming out of the mainstream had nothing to say about any of it. Punk arrived as a reaction, detonated largely by the Sex Pistols, but if the Pistols were the bomb, The Clash were the politics that followed. Joe Strummer, born John Graham Mellor, had been fronting a pub rock outfit called the 101ers when he saw the Sex Pistols play in the spring of 1976 and understood immediately that everything had to change. He quit within days and joined guitarist Mick Jones and bassist Paul Simonon, who had been playing together in a pre-punk group called London SS. Simonon came up with the name after noticing it appearing constantly in British newspaper headlines: race clashes, class clashes, political clashes. It fit perfectly. With drummer Terry Chimes completing the lineup, they played their first show on 4 July 1976, supporting the Sex Pistols in Sheffield, having rehearsed for less than a month. The Clash signed to CBS Records in January 1977 for a reported £100,000 and immediately had to defend the deal against accusations of selling out. Their answer was their self-titled debut album, recorded in three weekends for roughly £4,000 and released in April 1977. It was raw, fast, and direct in a way the music press had rarely encountered: thirty-five minutes of songs about unemployment, police harassment, boredom, and the grinding weight of class. ‘Career Opportunities', ‘White Riot', and ‘Janie Jones' announced a band writing from lived experience rather than spectacle. Critically, the album also included a cover of Junior Murvin's reggae track ‘Police and Thieves', signalling from the outset that The Clash were listening beyond punk, that their cultural reference points stretched into the Jamaican community in London, a community living under the same conditions of poverty and institutional racism that Strummer was putting into lyrics. CBS's American division refused to release the album, deeming it too raw for US radio. In the UK it reached number twelve and announced the band as something serious and lasting. Their second album, Give ‘Em Enough Rope, released in 1978 with American producer Sandy Pearlman at CBS's insistence, had a bigger, more polished sound that sat uneasily with the band's instincts. It sold well but felt constrained. What mattered more that year was where The Clash were placing themselves politically. They headlined the Rock Against Racism concert in Victoria Park in east London in April 1978, drawing a crowd of over 80,000 people at a time when far-right parties were actively recruiting in British cities. They had also recorded the furious single ‘Complete Control' in 1977 with Lee ‘Scratch' Perry producing, a direct response to CBS releasing a track without the band's approval, and a signal of how seriously they took the connection between Jamaican music and the political fire in their own work. The band insisted their records be priced accessibly, refused to charge inflated ticket prices, and were chronically in debt to their label as a result. For The Clash, the politics were never separate from the music. They were the same thing. The impact The Clash left behind is difficult to overstate. Chuck D has credited them as the direct template for Public Enemy's approach to socially conscious lyrics and their relationship with the press. Tom Morello, who inducted the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, built the entire philosophy of Rage Against the Machine on the question The Clash asked first: what happens when you put radical politics inside music with real rhythmic weight and make people want to move to it? Their influence runs through Massive Attack, U2, the Beastie Boys, and virtually every artist who has ever believed that bass and conviction belong in the same room. Joe Strummer died on 22 December 2002, one month before that Hall of Fame induction, at the age of fifty. The music has not stopped mattering since. This mix pulls from the early years, the fury of the debut, the political fire of the singles, and the moment a band from west London decided that punk was only the beginning. Turn it up. Use code trashy at the link below to get an exclusive 60% off an annual Incogni plan: incogni.com/trashy As Britain's youth struggled through the doldrums of the 1970s, their sense of alienation forged a new approach to music, birthing punk. And the band most closely associated with the punk movement at the time was The Sex Pistols. Four young men driven by a sense of aggression and a whole lot of drugs? It was not a recipe for longevity, an outcome that would become especially acute for bassist Sid Vicious. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're diving into 1976 – that wild year where America turned 200 with fireworks, flags, and music exploding everywhere. It is also the year where Ryan and I were born.  And the music world celebrated us joining the party by releasing Hotel California from the Eagles, Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, and Boston's Debut Album. David Bowie was The Thin White Duke. Disco was taking over the dance floors, while the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and The Clash were just getting started underground. There's plenty of great stuff to listen to, and debate so let's hit it.  Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here. Get In Touch Check us out online, on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. or drops us an email at show@prisonersofrockandroll.com. "Happy Birthday, Peter Hook" There's nothing about Peter Hook that I can tell you you don't already know, so let's just do a refresher run through his musical CV. In the late '70s Hook formed Joy Division with childhood pal Bernard Sumner after the two friends saw the Sex Pistols play in Manchester. The band only put out two albums and one of those albums, the legendary Closer was put out two months after the band had ceased to b,e due to the suicide of singer Ian Curtis on the eve of Joy Division's debut US/Canada tour. Rechristened New Order and consisting of the remaining members of Joy Division plus keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, New Order blended jittery post-punk rhythms with dance music. The result? Well, you know the result. They were one of the biggest bands of the '80s, spawning hits like True Faith, The Perfect Kiss, Subculture and Blue Monday, which was the biggest selling 12-inch of all time. It might still be. New Order dominated the '80s, but the '90s weren't too shabby—they had a #1 UK hit with World In Motion in 1990 and they had their biggest US hit with “Regret” in 1993. They kept crushing it, putting out Get Ready in 2001 and collaborating with Billy Corgan and Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream. They were given the Godlike Genius award at the 2005 NME awards and got nominated for a Grammy in 2006 for Guilt Is a Useless Emotion. Then things got a bit sour, with Hook leaving the band in 2007 and forming his own outfit Peter Hook and the Light, a band that featured his son Jack and much to his fans delight, revisited the Joy Division and New Order songbooks. Over the course of his career Hook has worked with The Stone Roses, and Perry Farrell, he toured with the Durutti Column, put out albums with Revenge and Monaco and wrote one of the best music books ever: Substance; Inside New Order. This is a partial list, btw. Almost a partial partial list because when it comes to Peter Hook, there's a lot of ground to cover. But these are the basics. Do a deeper dive after you hear the show—the guy is a titan. As for his split with New Order and his boyhood pal Bernard, we don't have time to go over the legal end of that dissolution, so let's just say this. If you're hoping for a reunion you're wasting your good hope energy. Not going to happen. As a bassist, he plays with an authoritative blend of prowl and sting and not only is he one of the all time greats, he also happens to be a nice guy. This chat covers his fractured friendship with Sumner, why the New Order/Joy Division songbooks appeal to fans across generations and what Hooky has learned from his old material. www.peterhookandthelight.live www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
