SNFU founders Marc and Brent Belke discuss band history, rare recordings, records, vinyl reissues on Trust Records, upcoming events at the Punk Rock Museum & more. Topics Include: Marc and Brent Belke join from Vancouver and Victoria to discuss SNFU's December 5th Punk Rock Museum exhibit and album re-release. The exhibit coincides with Trust Records' re-release of SNFU's debut album "...And No One Else Wanted to Play" with extensive extras. The re-release includes a 53-page booklet with rare photos, interview excerpts, and a full record of early demos and alternate versions. The exhibit features band paraphernalia, posters, t-shirts, and artwork, originally displayed at a Saskatchewan museum last summer before moving to Vegas. Marc and Brent will provide guided tours at the Punk Rock Museum and participate in a roundtable discussion on December 5th. The brothers describe Edmonton's early 1980s scene as intimate with only 50 people, mixing new wave, rockabilly, and emerging hardcore sounds. Getting punk records in Alberta meant ordering from New York stores via mail, waiting two months, and receiving only 25% of selections. Pivotal records included Bad Brains' ROIR cassette, Let Them Eat Jellybeans compilation, Sex Pistols' debut, and Minor Threat's Out of Step. The LA hardcore scene heavily influenced SNFU, with bands like Circle Jerks, Social Distortion, and Youth Brigade making significant impressions. SNFU formed when Marc and Brent's band lost members, recruiting bassist Curtis and drummer Evan Kaufmann based on personality over experience. Singer Chi Pig brought irreverent humor and sarcastic lyrics that became central to SNFU's identity and separated them from serious hardcore bands. The band recorded their debut album in two weeks with limited preparation, creating the raw energy that defined their sound. Early SNFU combined hardcore speed with melodic elements, drawing from both aggressive punk and bands like The Damned and Buzzcocks. The band signed with BYO Records for their second album, appreciating the DIY ethos and direct artist-to-label relationship. SNFU toured extensively across North America, playing everywhere from established venues to DIY spaces and experiencing varied punk scenes nationwide. The brothers discuss how the band's legacy feels incomplete, with the Trust re-release helping emphasize positive aspects of their history. Brent left SNFU to attend music school, studying jazz and strings, and now works creating music for film projects. Marc emphasizes Trust Records' meticulous approach, taking four years to perfect the release compared to SNFU's tendency to rush. Both brothers have never visited the Punk Rock Museum and look forward to experiencing it while giving tours on December 5th. Send us a textFrom a "dirty punk" being shamed in his Newcastle school assembly to sharing a beer with the Sex Pistols, Johny Brown lived the explosive birth of UK punk. But that was only the beginning. In this episode of Tales of a Disappearing City, Johny takes us on a wild journey through underground culture. He recounts jumping out of his window to escape being grounded for a TV appearance, only to be handed a ticket to a Sex Pistols gig in Middlesborough by Steve Jones himself. We follow him to London, where he immersed himself in the squatting scene, the industrial noise of Test Department, legendary clubs like The Beat Route and Flim Flam, and the anarchic warehouse parties of the Mutoid Waste collective. This is a story of creative reinvention, from homemade clothes and experimental cassette tapes to forming the beloved band Holy Joy, launching a groundbreaking radio show on Resonance FM, and creating avant-garde theatre. It's a firsthand account of 80s and 90s London, a city of chaos, community, and relentless creativity, and a powerful reminder to always "keep the faith".Some great subcultural links mentioned in this episode:https://www.boredteenagers.co.uk/speed.htmhttps://briangibson.yolasite.comhttps://www.instagram.com/cindy_stern_11/https://www.instagram.com/soulboyssoulgirls/Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. Neil is a veteran producer and DJ and has been at the front line of all aspects of club and sound system culture since the mid 80's when he first began to go to nightclubs, gigs, and illegal parties. His musical CV includes playing everywhere from plush clubs to dirty warehouses as well as mixing tunes on a variety of iconic London pirate radio stations. He has released music on numerous underground record labels and was responsible for promoting and playing at a series of legendary early raves in the USA at the start of the 90's. Love comes in many forms - sometimes confrontational. Today's episode is a paean to a couple of dominating dames that lit up the punk scene in the late 70s. Johnny Rotten once stated that the only person that actually frightened him was the gone too soon, Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex. That product of a Somali father and a British mother railed against consumerist culture, and her band's career might have been short lived, but their single, Oh Bondage, Up Yours! with it's bleating saxophone cavalry charge, blown by band mate Lora Logic, was a battle cry to aspiring Riot Grrls everywhere. The other indomitable mistress we wish to spotlight, Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, is still rocking 50 years later. This survivor from America's Midwest by way of England, -  this vegetarian restauranteur/punk legend, who fronted one of the most thrilling acts of the era, scored multiple hits across the pop spectrum, including this classic, Middle of the Road.X-RAY SPEXMarianne Joan Elliot-Said died prematurely at age 53, but she lived abundantly, migrating through several personae. Early on, she was a hippie, sleeping in crash pads and nearly dying from sepsis, which she contracted from stepping on a rusty nail while bathing in a stream. Later, inspired by seeing the Sex Pistols, she had found her calling. Choosing her moniker from the Yellow Pages, wearing braces on her teeth and Day-Glo outfits, she became a sensation. Like a comet, she streaked across the pop firmament and burnt out quickly, being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1978. She pursued a gentler and jazzier sound for her subsequent solo recordings, and in '83 became a Hare Krishna and a vegetarian. In February 2011 she revealed that she had been treated for breast cancer that had spread to her spine and lungs. She died later that year, yet in her short life she accomplished the nearly impossible: cultural immortality. THE PRETENDERSThe guitar signature, driven by Robbie McIntosh on 1983's Middle of the Road by The Pretenders creates an irresistible force, defining a clear road map for singer, Chrissie Hynde. It feels like she's behind the wheel, with the high beams on, going 120, roaring through the Ohio night, around the bend of a Rust Belt highway. She was already 33, and a single mother, as she tells us in the song. With one fist held high, she assures us that she'll be a survivor, and there's no shame in that. She's listed by Rolling Stone as 114 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of all time, and at 74, she's still going strong - still driving that muscle car of rock. This woman has ageless style and charisma. She is also a citizen of Great Britain, having moved there initially in '73, and almost marrying Johnny Rotten, Sid vicious, and Ray Davies (she has a daughter by the Kink).  After several misfires trying to start a band, her solo demo tape made it's way to Dave Hill, the owner of Real Records who helped her put the original Pretenders line up together, and the rest, as they say is “Herstory”.

Coming from a challenging, working class upbringing in the United Kingdom, Steve Jones discovered his outlet in music - as founding guitarist of the groundbreaking punk rock band the Sex Pistols. Despite the release of only one album,”Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols,” the band changed the course of music and history - vocalizing issues of class in songs like “Anarchy in the U.K.” – and influencing fashion, art and society. Since then, Jones has continued to play music (both solo and with bands The Professionals and Neurotic Outsiders) and was the host of the popular, long-running radio show, “Jonesy’s Jukebox.” In 2022, his insightful memoir, “Lonely Boy,” was adapted into the FX television series, the Danny Boyle-directed “Pistol.” Steve Jones talks to host Alec Baldwin about the roots of punk rock, coming up alongside Vivienne Westwood and Chrissie Hynde, and the road to getting clean – and beginning life anew.

Check him out on Twitter at @DrDominicGreen.Dominic's Music Pick: Iggy Pop & the StoogesLooooooooooord! When Dominic last joined us on Political Beats, to discuss the great U.K. band The Jam, we declared it to be in some ways one of the most necessary episodes of the show ever. (It was.) He has chosen to return to us this month with another one of the most necessary shows we have recorded, a deep dive into the true foundations of punk.Did "punk" music begin with the Sex Pistols in 1976? With the Velvet Underground in 1966? No. Whatever else you may think punk should be, or whatever else it evolved into, the true musical spirit of punk begins with the Stooges' 1969 debut album, a record of such throbbingly feral loudness, rage, and inarticulate energy that it seemed like the sound of cavemen bashing upon logs. And yet the Stooges -- led by Ypsilanti, Michigan's own James Osterberg, better known to the world as Iggy Pop -- were both primitive and neo-primitivist simultaneously: maybe the first band whose garage-rock aesthetics were both authentic and also an intentional artistic proposition. Iggy Pop -- working with the Ashton brothers and later James Williamson -- sought to strip rock and roll to its rawest, most inchoate essentials, and succeeded so wildly that an entire subgenre of music reveres him as their founding father. And then, of course, there's his work with David Bowie in the late Seventies, where both men creatively resurrected themselves. Buckle up for a brisk roller-coaster of an episode, folks -- embrace your lust for life. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Interview with Rebecca Pidgeon. Rebecca returns to talk about her new album Unillusion.   Rebecca Pidgeon was born in Cambridge, MA and raised primarily in Edinburgh, Scotland, gravitating towards music as a child. Mom and Dad introduced her to the likes of James Taylor, while she eventually discovered both Kate Bush and The Sex Pistols on her own. She fronted the band Ruby Blue for three records before relocating to the United States where she launched her solo career. Fan favorite albums followed including The Raven (1994), The New York Girls' Club (1996), The Four Marys (1998), Tough On Crime (2000), and Behind the Velvet Curtain (2008), four songs appearing in the critically acclaimed film Red Belt. The ensuing decade saw her release Slingshot (2011), Blue Dress On (2013), Bad Poetry (2014), and Sudden Exposure to Light (2019). Praising the latter, American Songwriter affirmed, “She's the real deal,” and Glide Magazine noted, “Pidgeon's prolific work as a songwriter and vocalist is akin to the self- immersion she undertakes for her mesmerizing performances on camera.” In addition, she has captivated audiences on-screen as a much sought-after film and television actress. Among dozens of credits, she has appeared in celebrated classics such as The Spanish Prisoner (1997), State and Main (2000), and Heist (2001) opposite the likes of Gene Hackman, William H. Macy, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Additionally, she has appeared in blockbusters a la Red (2010) and NETFLIX's Bird Box (2018), to name a few. Unillusion offers eloquent testimony to Rebecca Pidgeon's continuing power as a storyteller on stage, screen or the recording studio with an uncanny ability to blend narrative depth and musical intimacy in a way that feels both timeless and current. Sid Vicious - propelled him into the heart of the fledgling UK punk scene.By the end of that year, Mark had started one of the first British punk fanzines, SKUM, and not only been befriended by Bernie Rhodes, The Clash, and members of the Sex Pistols, but by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, who having seen Mark's cartoon of the Sex Pistols v. Bill Grundy TV fiasco, commissioned a ‘Story So Far' from him that became the insert to the Never Mind The Bollocks album. Mark was among the only proper fans, and surely the youngest to attend the Pistols' Silver Jubilee boat trip/concert on June 7, 1977, at which he was arrested and spend the night in jail. By then he was all of 15. He remembers it to this day as the best gig of his life.Mark ceased publishing SKUM in December 1977, a year after he had started, and indulged his Beat Poetry obsession instead, starting a fanzine called All The Poets, printed in early 1979 by Joly MacFie (featured on Episode 3 of this podcast) at Better Badges, as a ‘guinea pig' for his new printing press. Around the same time, he allowed my zine Jamming! to cut-and-paste his (first ever) Sid Vicious interview from SKUM 1 for my Jamming! 7, also printed at Better Badges. At the end of September 2025, Mark and I had a real time conversation for the first time in over 46 years, which I recorded in entirety for this, the final UK episode of the Fanzine Podcast. It is, quite possibly, and not as much for the renewed personal connection as for Mark's incredible origin stories, my favourite episode of them all.Other fanzines mentioned in this podcast: Sniffin' Glue, White Stuff, Bondage, Ripped & Torn, and London's Burning.Find Mark on Instagram. In this episode, #254 of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by a true architect of punk — Glen Matlock, the original bassist and founding spark of The Sex Pistols. Glen co-wrote ten of the twelve songs on the band's legendary 1977 album Never Mind the Bollocks, giving its chaos a melodic backbone that helped define an era. Now, he's reclaiming his story in the new documentary I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol — a compelling, filmic portrait of the Pistols' rise told through wry, honest, and often hilarious first-hand accounts. In this conversation, Glen looks back on the bleak yet electric energy of 1970s Britain, the provocations of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's SEX shop, Steve Jones' infamous thieving, and the band's chaotic search for a frontman that would ultimately change music forever. From bust-ups and fan mania to the tabloid outrage that followed, Glen offers a frank and insightful portrait of a group of misfits who tore down the old order — and the cost that came with it. He also talks about the real story behind I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol, co-writing the songs that built Never Mind the Bollocks, the truth about his split from the Sex Pistols, the spirit of early punk culture, fashion and rebellion, and the life lessons learned from one of rock's great survivors. Hear Glen Matlock reflect on the chaos, the craft, the myth — and the man behind it all. The conversation spans the band's meteoric rise, from sold-out shows in Brooklyn to high-profile festival appearances, such as Coachella. Cole opens up about the band's beginnings in Boston, the members' time at Berklee College of Music, and the evolution of the band's distinctive sound: raw, theatrical, and defiantly unorthodox. They dive into the origins of the band's name, their unique approach to performance, and what it means to create music without traditional melody or chords. With a candid discussion about identity and vulnerability in lyricism, Cole offers an unfiltered look into both the personal and artistic layers of Model/Actriz. Episode 053: What'd you say about my mom? F*** you! (Just kidding... unless?) This episode, Geoff, Russ, and Dave are dropping musical haymakers with the most savage diss tracks in history - and hey, podcast listeners, you look like you got dressed in the dark at a thrift store liquidation sale! Get ready for a musical roast session where musicians settle scores harder than middle school drama club. Pavement's about to drag 90s alt rockers through the mud, Lynyrd Skynyrd's got beef with a Canadian rocker, Carly Simon's precision-targeting some seriously vain men, Mojo Nixon is taking potshots at an Eagle, The Sex Pistols are New York punk scene arsonists, and Insane Clown Posse delivers what might be the most gloriously terrible diss track in musical history. And because no episode of musical shade would be complete without a random tangent, the guys are gonna dive into the soul-crushing monotony of work - because nothing says "diss track" like complaining about your 9-to-5. So grab your headphones, prepare for musical murder, and join us as we talk trash with the most gloriously petty tracks ever recorded.   Seriously, podcast listeners? Few bands have come from as little and made as much of themselves as Oasis. Along the way they were wildly entertaining — unlike anything England or the United States had ever seen — and fully committed to the life of the rock star and to making the greatest rock ‘n' roll music the world had ever heard. Through it all they famously fought, with fans, with police and with each other. They drank excessively and did copious amounts of drugs and didn't care who knew about it. They were England's new rock ‘n' roll saviors and they were stacked with Beatlesesque hooks and Sex Pistols-inspired attitude and seemingly, always, on the verge of breaking up. Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

James Gunn (Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad) is a director, screenwriter, and co-chair of DC Studios. James joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the enduring impact of Super Friends, why people love the fact that Superman can beat up God, and how seeing the Sex Pistols as a kid altered life. James and Dax talk about once getting into such an intense argument with his dad about Prince that it almost came to blows, falling in love with and relating to the monsters in horror movies, and the dream of mixing animals and outcasts in his work. James explains how transformative it was to be compensated for doing something creative, why Guardians of the Galaxy has a reach beyond superhero movies, and how his most difficult moments made way for him to feel ok for the first time in his life.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts.
