Trevor Alexander is a UI/UX tech designer and the kind of son that just wants to share inspirational stories of his mother. He's not looking for personal gain, but solely out of respect and admiration for his mom, Constance or better known as Connie, Trevor wants her story told. The second son of four children, two boys and two girls, Trevor, so he says was "accident prone" as a child which kind of came in handy when his mother became a x-ray technologist. An active child, sometimes stumbling over his own feet and/or injuries related to sports allowed he and his mom to spend some 'one on one' time together having x-rays taken after a fall.Connie was a nurse. She had worked in the ER and then transitioned into becoming a x-ray tech. It's a challenging career shift, lots to learn and the information is complicated regarding the machines and constant technical updates. Connie really gravitated to her new career, she was constantly studying and staying current with all aspect of this new field . Her experience as a nurse reenforced Connie's ability to be very nurturing. She truly cared about her patient's wellbeing and wanted to see them through their difficulties. Trevor's believes that this "truly resinated with his mother, the fact that she was there to help them. She was able to connect with each and everyone of them."Though stressful, in time, she was able to segment or compartmentalize the work/stressors and come home and be mom. She was very good at leaving her work out of the home. Over time, Trevor's mother made a very difficult decision, which would effect the entire family. Trevor wrote me initially to say "our family went through some terrible difficulties because of this decision, with her picking up work at a bakery to try and make ends meet. Her courage left a lasting impression on me. To stand up and refuse to be taken advantage of and mistreated knowing the road ahead would not be easy, always inspired me in my own career to aspire to such courage. I'm a UI (User Interface) designer, who's been in the industry for over 16 years and I can think of many times my career was inspired by my mother's bravery".When Trevor was in high school his mother quit her well paying job as the x-ray technologist because "of the abhorrent conditions of the work place," says Trevor. His mother wasn't being respected and Connie and Jim, Trevor's dad, mutually agreed that it wasn't a healthy situation and time to walk away. " My mother had tremendous drive to stay in her job, she was highly qualified, but there was a breaking point. She couldn't in good faith keep this going." Trevor continues, my mom said, 'I'm worth more than this.' "And more importantly, she wanted to make a statement to her kids that you stand up for yourself, you don't get pushed around and get taken advantage of," says a proud Alexander. We never know what life is going to throw our way, but it's important to believe in ourselves and realize that there is always a solution for a better future and no one/no employer should ever take advantage of anyone, ever.Connie took a job in a bakery at a supermarket with crazy hours. She had to work 12 hour shifts on her feet, but she loved it. She made new friends and would come home laughing and smiling with wonderful stories to share. She also came home with fresh baked goodies for the family.Trevor's book is entitled " An Ugly Design Career". https://uglydesigncareer.com/ Twitter: http://twitter.com/alexandertrevor

Shelley Bridgman Talks To Derek Arden About Her Life Challenges Here is Shelley Bridgman as described on the back of her book 'Stand-Up For Yourself' an inspiring, no-holds-barred account of one woman's quest to find her true self. Shelley Bridgman is an award-winning stand-up comic, actor, scriptwriter, professional speaker and a leading psychotherapist - but it wasn't always this way. First, she survived the hedonistic sixties with the inevitable round of clubbing, fashion and drugs; then she made the most of the seventies, travelling to over sixty countries whilst running a travel business - but it was the eighties that tested her to her limits. Battling depression, bankruptcy, addiction and suicide attempts, Shelley found the strength to confront her need to change gender and achieve harmony with herself. A unique story told with delightfully dry humour about identity, self-discovery, acceptance and courage. It is also a testament to a profoundly touching love story that has lasted over forty years. I've been feeling just a little bit "sigh, meh" for the past couple of days, so I thought it was a great time to just talk with you guys about those times when I have to turn from a gentle old soul and empath to a fighter and sometimes straight up asshole when you're forced to get real with unsavory folks who aren't so respectful of us or right to exist. I'll tell you some of the tricks and tips I've learned when dealing with mean, rude, arrogant, or unfeeling people out there. You know, those "society people" we have to associate with, but have nothing in common with and have no real desire to associate with, but have no choice but to deal with?! This episode is an off the cuff straight talk pep talk, where I explain what empaths have to go through, the emotional baggage after an uncomfortable encounter, how the world out there sometimes makes us feel, and what we must do sometimes when life forces us to deal with not so nice people out there. Sometimes life forces us out of our comfort zone, and to behave in ways we don't desire to be. Where we have to "go there" in ways we don't like, and find our "inner gangsta" when forced to drop our usual kind demeanor and gentle sensibilities and to "get real" in order to protect ourselves from hurtful and insensitive types of people. It doesn't happen a lot, but every now and then you have to set the record straight and get some people to understand that you aren't their doormat. All in the day in the life of a civilization that's sometimes losing its kindness, joy, and fun loving nature.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chefbrycomedy)
Does it always feel like you are fighting someone or something? Dr. Venus does. She's had to fight daily her whole life, whether it's against injustice, racism, sexism, or homophobia. Sure, fighting can help, but it's also exhausting and often leaves us feeling like we have no room to breathe. But sis, what if the problem isn't the woes of the world - from Haiti to Afghanistan to Racial injustice, but it is our approach? If we aren't fighting, how do we enact effective social change and make the world better than we found it? This week, Dr. Venus looks at the greats including Gandhi, Rosa Parks, and Dr. King. She shares the thread that they share and how they changed the world - and it wasn't fighting. What can we learn from them that can help us blaze our trails without burning out? Let's talk. Key Takeaways: [4:26] It can feel exhausting just fighting what's going on in today's societies. Between hurricanes, the pandemic, and dealing with the Karen's of society, we could all use a little rest and relaxation time. Dr. Venus takes personal development classes so she is always working on herself and getting some moments of growth and healing in between all these things we deal with. You are your first client, and make sure you are putting the time and work into yourself. [6:34] How do we make a difference in a way that doesn't burn us out? First, Dr. Venus knew it was important to look at the greats to see how they actually affected real change in the world without totally depleting themselves. She started with people she admired: Gandhi, Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Thoreau. She realized that they were not fighting. They were standing. Standing for something they deeply believed in. There were actions that went with their mission, but they didn't fight. [11:25] Fighting escalates things, while standing for something enacts real change. [14:13] We can get more done with non-compliance than we can with fighting. Think about your strong suits and what you are naturally good at. For Dr. Venus, it's healing and money. She knows that she can get more done by taking her superpowers and using them to create a digital platform for Black women to network and heal, without being shut down. Her platform is redirecting the conversation and non compliant to the structures that don't allow us to talk, or that try to keep us held down. [17:23] How compliant are you? Are you still fighting in your family, your relationships, or self? Dr. Venus is not fighting anyone anymore. She is standing for herself and what she's using her life for. This brings a different energy to the table, and allows us to heal and grow in a new way. [20:46] You aren't free until you have your own money. Our ancestors built their own and spent so much blood, sweat, and tears getting us to where we are now. We owe it to them to take a stand in what we believe in and to show our non compliance by building and participating in our own structures. [23:08] Since George Flloyd, Dr. Venus has been protesting, and now she is ready to start back up taking on private clients and helping birth Black Women millionaires and billionaires. Quotes: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” Albert Einstein “Dr. King wasn't fighting. He was standing for something.” “I'm not fighting anyone anymore. I'm standing for myself and what I'm using my life for.” “You aren't free until you have your own money.” “How compliant are you?” Mentioned: Dr. Venus Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram “Hot Mess Millionaire” Amazon Pilot “Hot Mess Millionaire” Complete Series (https://www.youtube.com/c/DrVenusOpalReese) Join the conversation! #MentalWellness #Mourning #Discomfort Hello Everyone, Welcome to our second segment on Mental Wellness, this week. This discussion is a continuation on our conversation surrounding grief and mourning. Listening in on discussions, and seeing some of the rhetoric that has been circulating, is a big reason why I felt this video was needed. We all will experience loss at some point, therefore we are all in a position to respect and honour the loss that those around us are experiencing. There are even occasions that might require us to speak up and stand up for those who are grieving, because they are not in the mental or emotional frame of mind to speak up for themselves. Stand Up for Yourself – to defend or support a particular idea or a person who is being criticized or attacked In this episode, I discuss five reasons to stand up for yourself to defend your ideas, rights, & to gain the respect of others, in this podcast episode. Although in the past, I would usually clap-back hard, my methods were not always as constructive as I would like. These were my young and immature days, where I felt everything was mostly “dog-eat-dog”, ready and willingly taking people out verbally (and sometimes physically) just to make a point. As I matured I learned to stand up for myself in more effective ways, in order to make a difference and to insight change positively. In these 5 great reasons to stand up for yourself, I touch on issues that are far beyond “killing people with kindness”, and learning how not feel regret or guilt after educating people on how you deserve to be dealt with. 5 Great Reasons to Stand Up For Yourself: 1. Build confidence - 2. Shed light on injustice & disrespect – 3. Set an example/ inspire others – 4. Set a precedent/a bar – 5. Teach a lesson to the accused – Show up for yourself! Speak your mind and use your voice. Don't hide behind the avatars and profiles pictures, but come from behind the screen and keyboard to speak up for a group that is being disadvantaged, not just yourself. It's bigger than just ourselves when so many of us are experiencing so many defeats and obstacles that in the past we were afraid to change.
Camille Sanzone asks you to celebrate July 4th this year by DECLARING YOUR PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE. She says “fitting in” is highly overrated, that by standing up & standing out, you can be your authentic, transparent self. She suggests you lean into your life each day. She says: “Don’t 'let' life happen to you, 'make' the life you want happen.” Some of the keys she shares are having an attitude of gratitude, & using curiosity and creativity to design a richer life. THAT IS TRUE LIBERATION!This show is broadcast live on W4WN Radio – The Women 4 Women Network (www.w4wn.com) part of Talk 4 Radio (http://www.talk4radio.com/) on the Talk 4 Media Network (http://www.talk4media.com/).

Camille Sanzone talks with Shelley Bridgman, transgender psychotherapist and author of STAND UP FOR YOURSELF and become the hero or shero you were born to be. People who are transgender feel "trapped" in the wrong body. If you woke up this morning in the body of the opposite gender, just imagine the torment you would be in. We each have the right to be who we really are. This show is broadcast live on W4WN Radio – The Women 4 Women Network (www.w4wn.com) part of Talk 4 Radio (http://www.talk4radio.com/) on the Talk 4 Media Network (http://www.talk4media.com/).
