Twenty years ago, this tragic romantic drama took the world by storm by becoming a suprise international box office hit along with garnering massive acclaim.  It even eventually won a few Academy awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Socre, and most importantly Best Director for Ang Lee who was coming off of directing two more action-oriented blockbusters before this, Hulk and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.  This film's story focuses on two ranchhands just trying to make a living as they embark on herding a massive flock of sheep around the titular Brokeback Mountain.  They are Ennis DelMar (Heath Ledger nominated for his performance) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal, also nominated for his) and over severals alone together on this journey, they develop a friendship which eventually becomes something more....And then we watch over the next twenty years as they keep periodically meeting up even as their lives get increinaly complicated with jobs, marriages, kids, and feelings. :o What results is a beautifully crafted tragic love story which not only broke some barriers given its subject matter but also built up a strong legacy over time as one of a select few modern classics which infamously lost the Best Picture Oscar to a far inferior film. 2024's Road House is surprisingly watchable, even if it pales in comparison to the original. Jake Gyllenhaal does a serviceable job as Elwood Dalton—the bouncer with a penchant for violence but a heart of gold. And the general premise of a man who busts up bar fights for a living is still wildly entertaining. Where this one stumbles is the odd use of CGI to make the fights appear more "brutal." It's often distracting and offputting. Not distracting enough, though, to make you forget how bland and boring Billy Magnussen's villainous Brandt is. He lacks any semblance of the sleaze Ben Gazzara brought as Brad Wesley. Honestly, and it is baffling to type this, the movie is kind of saved by the ludicrous performance of Conor McGregor. He may be high as hell on blow, but he definitely understands the assignment. Now, sit back, get belligerent with an Orange Blossom Pilsner2 from Orange Blossom Brewing Co., and take it outside! Strap in as Whitey, Damo, and Dan on the Land gear up for a sci-fi action loop fest featuring Tom Cruise in one of his most against-type roles, Emily Blunt as a full-metal badass, and a time-travel plot that actually sticks the landing. They blame lousy marketing, title confusion (was it Live Die Repeat?), and the fact that in 2014, Cruise was still on Hollywood's naughty step thanks to Oprah's couch.But now? It's cult-classic gold.Whitey kicks off by calling out just how rare it is to see Cruise playing the weasel, Major Cage is an ad man thrown into combat, clueless and terrified. For Dan, this fish-out-of-water arc makes the movie shine, watching Cruise go from smug coward to unstoppable warrior. Damo agrees, even calling Edge of Tomorrow his number one Cruise performance, yep, he goes there.Emily Blunt earns unanimous praise as Rita Vrataski, the “Angel of Verdun” and all-around exosuit-slaying legend. She's fierce, stoic, and fit as hell, basically the action heroine we didn't know we needed in 2014. Her iconic push-up entrance gets a lot of airtime (and a few longing sighs), and the team agrees she holds her own, and then some, against Cruise.And what would a Born to Watch ep be without the usual blend of insight and irreverence? We get tangents on everything from duck anatomy (cloacas, anyone?) to Bill Paxton's legendary status as the only man killed by a Terminator, a Predator, and an Alien. Scott Turow is a writer and attorney. He is the author of fourteen works of fiction, including Presumed Innocent, and most recently, Presumed Guilty, which hit the shelves in January of this year.
