Drawing on the wisdom of Dandapani's The Power of Unwavering Focus, I will share some of the effects of fear and worry on one's personal growth. In this episode, I discuss the beauty and challenges of being an entrepreneur. While we often have a keen eye for opportunity and ideas, this can lead to constant distractions. I emphasise the importance of focusing on key metrics like profit, free time, peace of mind, and customer success to measure true success. I caution against chasing every opportunity that comes along, as it may not contribute to growth in areas where you excel. I underscore the significance of investing in oneself first and staying focused on what you are truly skilled at in business.

This is my wrap up from what I'm working to learn from this series on focus and our expert, Dandapani, world renowned, leading expert on leveraging the human mind and the power of focus, and author of, The Power of Unwavering Focus. I was fortunate to have two, long conversations with Dandapani from his Siva Ashram in Costa Rica, with the second discussion being a deep dive into a controversial view on spirituality that was profound for me. I think we'll have some follow up discussions that I'll be eager to share with you. As I reviewed my notes from the series on focus, I found six key lessons bubble to the surface, and I'll talk through the concepts with you now. You can now watch full episodes on YouTube! We continue this series on Focus, highlighting that it's not about gritting your teeth, but in changing your paradigm on what focus is and how to harness the focus that you do have within you. Our expert is Dandapani, a world renowned, leading expert on leveraging the human mind and the power of focus, and author of, The Power of Unwavering Focus. Listen to my previous talk with him in part one, or just type “dandapani focus” in your search engine and you'll see his TED talk with 6.7 million views. Today I bring in a long time devotee of Dandapani's who has been studying his work and teaching on focus for many years. My brother, Jared Angaza. We kick off discussing Dandapani's statement that “most people surrender their decision-making process to their environment. And it takes discipline to take ownership. This led into an organic discussion on discipline and how we as a culture misperceive what discipline really is. If you feel you are undisciplined, overall or in certain areas, I invite you to listen in, as the conversation brought some revelations to me. We continues on then, digging further into how to have more focus in our lives, and for disclosure, Jared and I both struggle with ADHD, so this is an acutely relevant topic to us. This is part 2 in my series on focus with Dandapani, a sought-after international speaker and leading expert on leveraging the human mind and the power of focus, and author of, The Power of Unwavering Focus. Search for him and find his TED talk that went viral. Normally this would be my “What Drives You” episode where I walk through the key areas of life and ask, what drives my guests. However, the first category is spirituality, and as Dandapani is a former monk and current Hindu priest, I pressed in on a controversial statement he had written in his book. This is the quote, “In taking charge of your life, you should not leave it up to the environment or, God forbid, the Universe, such as claiming, “The Universe is going to guide me.” I can assure you Jupiter, Pluto and Uranus are not sitting around figuring out how to solve the complexities of your life." I asked Dandapani to unpack this, and what followed was a fairly blunt and irreverent discussion on spirituality in our current culture. It was unique enough that Dandapani and I spoke afterwards about more candid talks on spirituality and possibly even an event in America. Dandapani is a coach to high performing entrepreneurs and athletes, because, as he said, “They actually follow through on what I coach them to do.” And a crux of what you'll hear is Dandapani stating that to achieve success in any area of life we need a clear strategy that we adopt and adhere to, depending on our specific goals. And most high performers do this, except in the area of spirituality, where we pick and choose from a menu of spiritual concepts. And it doesn't work. So in this episode, he really takes it to task. We all know we're in an age of distraction. It feels like we all have ADHD. We are all consumed with multi-tasking and dealing with what is urgent and can't ever get any of the big, important things done. Meanwhile we all follow and applaud the people who can manage to focus and achieve great things. We think focus comes from gritting our teeth and making ourselves, and we are missing the concept. My guest today and expert on this topic is Dandapani. Dandapani grew up in his family home, went to school and actually graduated from university with a degree in electrical engineering. He left it all behind to become an ordained Hindu monk under the guidance of one of Hinduism's foremost spiritual leaders of our time. For 10 years he lived a life of serious personal discipline and training at his guru's cloistered monastery in Hawaii. Here he learned to control his mind. He learned to focus. And he believes this is the key to finding one's purpose. As you may think, “Yeah, it's not so hard to focus when you live in a monastery in Hawaii,” Dandapani agrees. Yet he believed the teachings would work in the outside world as well, and now he's proved it. He left the monastery and moved to New York where he started a business, got married, and became a father. Today he is a highly sought-after international speaker and leading expert on leveraging the human mind and the power of focus to create a life of purpose and joy. His TEDx talk has over 6.2 million views and he has other videos with tens of millions of views. He sat down with me from his thirty-three-acre spiritual sanctuary and garden in Costa Rica to discuss the message in his book, The Power of Unwavering Focus. One concept from his message has changed my life. That of the mind being a vast space with many different areas and our awareness is a glowing orb of our focus that can only light up one room at a time. You're about to hear of this, and more. Dandapani has lived a unique and purpose-driven life. He is a Hindu priest and entrepreneur who spent his first 10 years after university studying as a monk at a monastery in Hawaii. He concluded his study and took his well-honed knowledge of discipline, focus and energy management to help others harness their energy and build a life of purpose and joy. Dandapani has also delivered a TEDx Talk, “Unwavering Focus,” which has been viewed over six million times. In this episode, Dandapani joins host Robert Glazer on the Elevate Podcast to talk about his time as a monk, the value of practicing how to focus, the importance of building high quality relationships, and how you can take control of your consciousness to live a more purposeful life.

He gave a TEDx talk that has been viewed over 5.6 million times and his GoalCast videos have been watched more than 75 million times. He's also written a book called, The Power of Unwavering Focus Notes: We need a core purpose in life. Your purpose defines your priorities. It's worth it to do the work to understand this. Self-reflection needs to become part of your routine. Excellence = Clarity of purpose, a burning desire, and understanding WHO is aligned with your purpose and developing those relationships fully. Remember, life is finite. It will end. Let's make the most of it. You'll often hear parents say to their kids, “we just want you to be happy.” Happiness should never be pursued. Rather, one should pursue a lifestyle where the byproduct of living that lifestyle is happiness. We generally think of concentration as a skill we're born with, rather than a skill we need to be taught and then cultivate by practicing over time. Would you expect to be an expert piano player naturally? Of course not - you would seek instruction, and then practice for years in order to grow your skill. Concentration, in short, is the ability to keep awareness on one thing until you consciously choose to move it to something else. Distraction, on the other hand, is awareness being controlled by your environment (the people and things around you) without conscious choice. We are what we practice. The reality is that most people are not conscious of the fact that they are practicing distraction all day every day and hence why they are masters at distraction. The idea is to build concentration, willpower, and mastery of awareness into your days little by little, growing your skill over weeks, months, and years. Dandapani's guru has the biggest influence on his life. The role of a mentor is to empower people with tools and help them gain perspective. Book: Think and Grow Rich. Once you experience something, you can't un-experience it. A guru takes deep responsibility for someone's life. "You can only say no if you know what to say yes to." Learn to focus: Dedicate time in the morning. Find a quiet space. With self-reflection, there can be no mask. Excellence = Clarity of purpose Who are you aligned with?

When you were a kid, teachers and parents probably told you to concentrate. And as an adult, you likely often think about how much more productive, present, and happy you'd be if only you had better focus. But despite how much we think about our desire to improve our focus, no one ever gets any training in how to do it and even explains what focus is, exactly. My guest today is an exception to that rule. He was taught the secrets to concentration when he spent ten years as a Hindu monk, and today he's on a mission to share them with others. His name is Dandapani, and he continues to live as a Hindu priest, though he's now also an entrepreneur and author, with a book just published called The Power of Unwavering Focus. Today on the show, Dandapani defines focus and shares the existential reasons why developing yours is so vital. He explains how that development begins with understanding how the mind is different from awareness, that where awareness goes, energy flows, and the need to bring awareness to attention. We walk through how to stop practicing distraction and start practicing concentration by making each of your daily activities a focused practice, and ultimately, making your whole day a practice. We also discuss how daily sessions of meditation are inadequate for developing focus, how mindfulness is different than concentration, and how the ability to control and direct your awareness is one of the greatest powers you can possess.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM Podcast #168: The Value of Deep Work in the Age of DistractionAoM Article: What Every Man Ought to Know About FocusAoM Article: How to Effectively Manage Your AttentionAoM Article: 11 Exercises That Will Strengthen Your AttentionAoM Article: 12 Concentration Exercises from 1918AoM Podcast #768: Become a Focused MonotaskerConnect With DandapaniDandapani's Website

Grandson of former Arsenal footballer and England cricket legend, Denis, Nick Compton has huge sporting pedigree and in many ways it was written in the stars that he would become a professional athlete. However, it wasn't just good genes that enabled Nick to reach the highest level - it was his unwavering focus and relentless dedication that allowed him to flourish on the international stage. In an honest reflection of his career, Nick admits that sometimes his intense focus and desire to succeed was unhealthy and contributed to feelings of anxiety and doubt. During the interview, Nick also gives a fascinating insight into the English dressing room at that time, when the side was one of the greatest in the world. A prolific opening batsman, Nick scored two centuries for England in his 16 Test matches, and impressed players, fans and media with his grit and resilience. Many in the game felt Nick deserved more than just 16 Test matches, and his record as one of Alistair Cook's most successful opening partners would corroborate that. While Nick reflects on his career with a slight disappointment that he didn't play more often, he can be proud of his performances when he was selected. Since retiring in 2016, Nick has found a new passion as a photographer. He's working hard to shine a light on communities that often don't receive the attention they should do. It would have been tempting for Scott Satterfield and the Mountaineers to overlook the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks (ULM) on Saturday. After all, they have a poor record and Georgia Southern will be knocking on our front door a mere 5 days afterwards for a Thursday night showdown on national TV that will help shape the Sun Belt championship race.Luckily for us, the Mountaineer faithful, App State fought off a shaky start and delivered a crushing blow to the Warhawks. And "crushing" is putting it nicely. After a 24-14 halftime score, the Mountaineers went on to completely shut down the ULM attack and rack up 59 points and 650+ yards when it was all said and done. But those numbers don't tell the whole story. To find out why the numbers tell us even more good news than you might think, listen to our postgame breakdown of the ULM game. Also, find out why we think ESPN3 sent in their JV broadcast and production crew.
