Show Notes: -What are limiting beliefs (or as Lindsay calls them, “old/overused pathways”) and why does our brain form them? -What do limiting beliefs stand in the way of and how do they affect both our physical realities and our subconscious minds? -Step one: Becoming aware of the belief. “Is my brain trying to protect me?” -An example of an overused pathway: perfectionism -The two things (or basics needs) our brains are instinctually trying to accomplish by forming limiting beliefs: survival and protection -Our limiting beliefs are usually formed in childhood, before our prefrontal cortexes are fully developed and before we can properly access proper reasoning and decision making; they are a survival response -We can find versions of our current limiting beliefs in our childhood selves. Tools for awareness: “When was one of the first times this survival response showed up in my life?” “How does this limiting belief show up in my life today?” -Step two: Accepting that you have these limiting beliefs -Asking yourself if these beliefs align with who you want to become and the life you want to live (the answer will be no!); then, realizing you need to move to step three -Step three: Modeling a new way of being to yourself -Resources: -Click here to sign up for the Reboot Waitlist -Visit the Vital-Side Homepage here -Lindsay's Instagram: @myvitalside -Visit Lindsay's Website -Cait's Instagram: @caitrossco -Visit Cait's Website Join our community: bit.ly/rewirethepodcast Podcast disclaimer can be found by visiting: bit.ly/rewiredisclaimer

Happy Satiated Saturday! It's truly amazing how many body based healing modalities are out there now. I've been involved in the somatic world way before somatics was "in" and cool. Most of my family probably thought I was going into some fake psychotherapy degree, but as soon as I read the description of the classes, I knew that was the path for me. I came in to my somatic psychotherapy program loudly declaring I was going to be the one who combines somatics and nutrition. And now, I see others doing this more and more. It's wonderful that so many practitioners are learning about and infusing somatic work into their practices and it can also feel overwhelming with all the suggestions out there. This is why I'm excited for you to listen to today's podcast episode with a practitioner who has been diving into and teaching brain retraining and nervous system regulation also before it exploded in popularity the past few years. In this week's episode, I chat with Lindsay Mitchell, PA-C, Brain Retraining Coach and the founder & CEO of Vital-Side, about what brain retraining is, how food sensitivities can have nothing to do with the food itself, and brain retraining exercises. We break things down in this episode into bite sized pieces of practical actions you can explore to step into a different relationship with food. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/healing-food-sensitivities-and-fear-of-food-with-brain-retrainingMany of the things we discussed today are also explored in the Somatic Eating® Program. This episode is sponsored by Autoimmune Resolution. Check out the episode on this podcast with Katherine Housh, the founder. Our guests today are Lindsay Mitchell & Bianca Spears. Lindsay Mitchell is the founder of Vital-Side, brain retraining coach, and avid seeker of knowledge. After years of working with hundreds of clients, Lindsay sought to provide a softer, fun, and purpose-driven approach to brain retraining, something that can help brain retrainers level-up their practice and connect with their lives. Check out Lindsay's previous episode on the podcast. She combined some of the most commonly asked questions and frequently requested topics to create structure and protocols to extend the journey of healing and help people connect with their everyday wins in a thoughtful, sustainable way. Bianca Spears is a Laughter Leader and transformation coach. Her work (and play) help people who are ready to create more fun, flow and freedom in their lives. Play, movement and laughter are all part of the way she lives and works, and they've helped her to rise through anxiety and rewire her brain. Incorporating her training and experience in various coaching and healing modalities, her Neuroplaystic approach is unique, science-backed and feel-good. Check out Bianca's previous episode on the podcast. After being invited to present at the same brain retraining retreat a couple of years ago, Bianca and Lindsay connected and it was clear that they shared a passion for helping others to bring purpose, play and personalization to their lives and healing journeys. They saw the rigidity and perfectionistic tendencies that the brain retraining process sometimes brought about and craved another way to help people to reconnect to their passion, fun and their true selves while healing, and so, Elevate Brain Retraining 2.0 was born. As they realized more needs within the brain retraining space, their second collaborative membership, Regulation Station - a hub of statechangers for nervous system regulation, plus live calls - was created soon after. Oftentimes, inflammation lies at the heart of chronic disease. Those people suffering from a chronic illness or symptoms have ongoing inflammation due to various factors and for certain patients, many treatment modalities do not help them. This segment of the patient population suffering from chronic disease often has Limbic system impairment which means the sympathetic nervous system is dominant, inhibiting bodily systems from functioning at optimal capacity. For these individuals, brain or nervous system retraining is necessary, helping to facilitate a parasympathetic reset allowing healing to take place. The parasympathetic system helps us enter a state of rest-and-digest, through which we can make positive changes to our brains that result in greater health, diminishing symptoms, and increased resilience to stress. Recent scientific research has discovered that the brain is constantly experiencing new neural activity throughout our entire lives. This concept is known as neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to change, re-organize, and adapt. It is at the core of Lindsay's mission. We discuss: Lindsay's health journey with chronic disease and what led her to focus on brain retraining. What is Limbic System impairment and brain retraining and how this is done. How to approach patients with difficult-to-treat chronic conditions that aren't improving. How to understand neuroplasticity, in other words, making changes to your brain. Guest Bio: Lindsay Mitchell is the founder of Vital-Side, a membership program that empowers those with chronic illness and limbic system impairment to retrain their brain out of the chronic stress response so they can get relief from their symptoms and find freedom in their lives. Her training in medicine as a physician assistant, work as an NLP practitioner, and experience having recovered from Lyme disease makes her uniquely qualified to assist others in learning how to shift their response and experience positive changes to their symptoms. In this episode, we have guest speaker Lindsay Mitchell, and we talk about rewiring the brain after chronic illness through neuroplasticity. I have my own experiences coming through chronic illness. I had asthma as a child had massive terrible debilitating migraines as a child; by the time that I was in my mid-20s, I developed sibo, I've had e coli, then I got diagnosed with PoTS postural tachycardia, the list goes on, I was from 26 to 30. I went over 45 doctors and spent probably well into the six figures on my medical expenses and needs. One of the things that happened that were fascinating in my journey was, coming across the research and literature around the ACE Survey and how adverse childhood experiences and development in the cortisol state which happens for a lot of people who come through trauma and that's whether it's trauma as a child or a trauma as an adult at all kind of leads down the same pathway where suddenly you're in your sympathetic nervous system the fight will use freeze or fawn response and your brain is only trying to do one thing to survive. Lindsay Mitchell is a super passionate human, lover of all things neuroscience, and the founder of Vital-Side. Lindsay's story of chronic illness began as a teen when she tested positive for Epstein-Barr virus. While studying to be a physician assistant in South America, She fell ill to various parasites that kept her fatigued with gut issues after returning to the U.S.During a trip to the Redwoods, a tick bite unleashed the “perfect storm” — a build up of biological and environmental toxins due to years of exposure. She tested positive for Lyme disease, multiple parasites, systemic candidiasis, and other co-infections.Her doctors told her to make herself comfortable—that her diagnoses were something she'd have to deal with for the rest of her life. But she rejected this.I began reading about the brain's ability to change—a concept referred to as neuroplasticity—and made the decision to begin brain retraining.Once she begin to master this process and learned how to calm the stress response, her symptoms didn't just improve...they began to disappear and within 8 months, she was totally betterFast forward to 2018, Lindsay founded Vital-Side - a neuroplasticity based healing program that helps chronically ill or stressed people go from fight-flight-or freeze to rest-and-digestThis is a really exciting subject for me to talk aboutFOLLOW LINDSAY ON INSTAGRAM▶ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/myvitalsideFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL▶ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheChronicComeback▶ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thechroniccomebackSUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST▶ Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-chronic-comeback/id1533970626▶ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW_BGsN1LaeL4iudgSNUw7A▶ Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/71485tI9o4JPPkg1IpmDaX
Lindsay Mitchell is one of the most brilliant testimonies of healing that I've ever had the honor of witnessing. After being told that her tick borne illness was the "worst case they had ever seen", she dove deep into understanding the impact that the brain has on the body and proceeded to use brain training to heal fully. Now she helps others do the same. In this episode, Lindsay explains exactly how brain training works and what changes we can make on a physical level with our thoughts alone. She radiates wisdom, joy, and healing energy, and I can't wait for you to take some practical steps from this episode so you can start feeling better today.
