Read the full transcript here. Which decisions should be made by election and which by random sampling? Where is competition healthy for choosing leaders, and where must rule-setting be unitary and impartial? What would credible umpires look like - judges, statisticians, pay reviewers - and how do we insulate them from parties? Can citizen juries and standing sampled councils surface red lines, negotiate overlap, and rebuild losers' consent? Why does professional party culture normalize behavior individuals would reject, and can structured deliberation beat competitive groupthink? How do we measure success for rule-setters - accuracy, legitimacy, or a cooler temperature? When do promotions-as-power contests crowd out service, and could elections without candidates find better leaders? How much polarization is real cleavage versus performance layered over broad agreement, and how do institutions interrupt cosplay turning into violence? What minimum independence and accountability keep sampled bodies honest without drifting into technocracy? Where should problem-solving favor practical wisdom over pure truth-finding - embedding local knowledge alongside trials, models, and metrics? Week 17 doesn't care about what you meant to do, or what your roster looked like in October. It only cares about totals. One round is already in the books, and now we're staring at the second half of a two-week playoff where every point counts the same, whether it comes on Christmas Day or Sunday night. There are no style points left. This is math, nerve, and lineup discipline. Some teams are protecting leads. Others are chasing aggressively. And everyone's checking injury reports like they're reading tea leaves. This is the week where safe decisions lose leagues and bold ones win them. Around the NFL, the timing couldn't be better or worse depending on who you ask. Quarterbacks are questionable, stars are chasing contract bonuses, suspensions are still being debated, and fans are freezing in stadiums watching games that somehow still matter. Week 17 always blurs the line between football and chaos. Christmas Poem: 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the league, Not a lineup was resting, not even fatigue. The rosters were set with extreme calculation, For this isn't one week, but two-week accumulation. Round one is complete, but the war isn't done, One matchup remains till a champion's won. Six teams stand tall as the playoffs advance, While the rest watch it play out with envy and chance. Los Gallegos rolled steady, composed and precise, While You Sanuze You Lose kept rolling the dice. Micah Hyde Yo Kids brought chaos and flair, And Bethesda Big Train just kept rolling somewhere. Andy Reid's Fupa surprised and attacked, While the Azure Gargoyles stayed icy and stacked. Six entered the bracket, six earned their way in, Two weeks of totals decide who will win. But make no mistake, this league's story runs deep, Beyond just the teams that still dream in their sleep. For Jim Bob Cooters, the champs reigning still, Watched quietly knowing they've already climbed the hill. Hoop Dreams had visions that danced in their head, While Kiss of Deaf left defenses completely misled. Colonel Sanders Was Offsides yelled flags at the screen, And The District Skins swore next year's their scene. Bishop Backers stayed faithful through ups and through downs, Because legends are built not just wins, but rebounds. Every team played their part, every season had stakes, This league's not just trophies—it's memories made. And presiding it all, clipboard firm in his grip, Commissioner Steve ran a tight, steady ship. So steady, in fact, that the world took a look, Voting him finalist—yeah, that wasn't a fluke. From Mike's Hard Lemonade, the word has been sent, Best Commissioner sweepstakes—Steve's into the end. Proof that this league, with its chaos and pride, Is run by a man who takes nothing in stride. Yet one voice was missing, a pause in tradition, As poetry waited its annual ignition. For Dylan Walsh, the scribe we all know so well, Was writing a far greater story to tell. A new baby arrived, a new chapter begun, A partner beside him, a family won. So this year we pause, with respect and with cheer, Knowing the poem will be back next year. Now visions of championships danced in each head, While stat apps refreshed as they crawled into bed. Two weeks decide it, no flukes, no disguise, Just totals and tension and Christmas surprise. So good luck to the teams as the final week plays, May your lineups hold strong through the holidays. And remember this league, through the chaos and cheer: Merry Christmas to all and see you next year.

"If we can't bring the kids to the kitchen, maybe we can bring the kitchen to the kids." —Carolyn Federman Food education often gets treated as optional, even though it shapes health, culture, and opportunity from the very start. When kids lack access to hands-on food learning, the gap shows up everywhere from classrooms to hospitals. This conversation explores what changes when education meets practicality. Carolyn Federman shares how years of work alongside Alice Waters and the Edible Schoolyard revealed a major barrier. Teaching kitchens worked, but they were out of reach for most schools. That insight led to the creation of Charlie Cart, a mobile teaching kitchen now used across schools, libraries, food banks, and pediatric settings nationwide. Press play to hear how food education scales without losing heart, and why access must include skills, not just ingredients. How Charlie Cart was designed to bring cooking education anywhere kids gather Why food education is essential to food access and public health The role of culture, family, and shared meals in shaping lifelong habits Lessons learned from building and manufacturing a mission-driven product How schools, libraries, hospitals, and communities are using mobile kitchens What it takes to make food education a national priority Meet Carolyn: Before starting the Charlie Cart Project in 2014, Carolyn Federman led Alice Waters' Edible Schoolyard Project, developed programming with the Jamie Oliver Foundation, co-founded the Berkeley Food Institute, and co-produced UC Berkeley's Edible Education course with Michael Pollan. She is a proud emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Berkeley Public Library Foundation, and the author of New Favorites for Cooks (TenSpeed Press 2018), based on children's favorites from the Carlie Cart Project curriculum. Send us a textIf becoming a lawyer no longer requires proving what you know, what does the profession really stand for? Gavin Tighe and Stephen Thiele take on the Law Society of Ontario's proposal to scrap bar exams in favor of a training course, arguing that removing substantive testing undermines both public protection and the meaning of being called to the bar. Drawing on their own experiences in law school and practice, they explore how legal education has changed, why baseline legal knowledge is essential, and how lowering standards risks public confidence in the profession. They discuss the concerns about competency, mentorship, AI misuse, and an increasingly saturated legal market, ultimately questioning whether a profession without rigorous gate-keeping can still claim legitimacy as a learned profession. Taking dental X-rays can be one of the most challenging parts of a dental assistant's day, especially when patients are anxious, uncomfortable, or difficult to image. Small technique mistakes, rushed positioning, or missed opportunities to build trust can turn a routine task into a frustrating experience for both the assistant and the patient. In this episode of the Dental Assistant Nation podcast, Kevin Henry sits down with dental radiography educator Janet Simpson to explore how dental assistants can take better dental X-rays every time. Janet shares practical insights from decades of clinical and teaching experience, explaining how proper positioning, understanding X-ray beam behavior, and adjusting technique can dramatically improve image quality. The conversation also highlights the importance of patient comfort, empathy, and communication, showing how trust and compassion play a critical role in successful radiographs. From correcting common imaging errors to creating a calmer experience for nervous patients, this episode offers a thoughtful look at how mastering dental X-rays goes beyond equipment and technique and starts with the assistant behind the sensor. Chuck Todd breaks down Donald Trump’s prime-time address to the nation, arguing that it functioned less as a governing update and more as a rapid-fire campaign rally designed to rehab Trump’s political image. Todd explains how the speech sidestepped real policy challenges, leaned heavily into grievance, and once again spoke almost exclusively to Trump’s base—underscoring what he sees as the former president’s biggest weakness: a profound lack of self-awareness. From healthcare and energy costs to AI and economic anxiety, the episode examines how Trump’s fixation on personal slights and image management continues to shape his priorities, even as frustration grows among Republicans and voters alike who are still waiting for results instead of rhetoric. Then, businessman, venture capitalist and political strategist Bradley Tusk joins Chuck Todd for a wide-ranging conversation about leadership fatigue, the erosion of America’s rule of law, and the long-term consequences of the Trump era. Tusk argues that many of today’s institutional crises—from weakened economic pillars to America’s retreat from global leadership—are inseparable from Trump’s choices, and that “pay-to-play” politics may linger even after he’s gone. The discussion also explores capitalism’s successes and excesses, the growing public unease around AI, and why uneven, state-by-state regulation is both inefficient and, at times, a necessary laboratory for innovation. The conversation then turns to the future: how AI-driven inequality could spark massive political upheaval, why crypto only works with regulation, and whether mobile voting could dramatically reshape democracy by boosting participation and accountability. Tusk weighs the risks of low-information turnout, the challenges of selling reform in rural America, and why JD Vance may be the biggest wildcard in restoring the rule of law. The episode closes with reflections on missed turning points in presidential history, the changing nature of political communication, and what it will take for candidates in 2028 to be truly battle-tested for the moment ahead. Finally, he answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment and previews the upcoming weekend in college football. Get your wardrobe sorted and your gift list handled with Quince. Don't wait! Businessman, venture capitalist and political strategist Bradley Tusk joins Chuck Todd for a wide-ranging conversation about leadership fatigue, the erosion of America’s rule of law, and the long-term consequences of the Trump era. This round of voting pitted the sleeping freighter ship captain who ran aground in a man's front yard against the husband who didn't realize his wife had gotten out of the car at a gas station and he drove off for over 200 miles!
The final pairing in the first round of voting had the knucklehead from November against December! The man who hid his car and told cops it had been stolen because he didn't want to go shopping with his wife vs the former head football coach at Michigan, he threw away his job and marriage and got arrested over an affair!
The voting came fast & furious in this round as the cop who was totally drunk showed up to answer a 911 call squared off against the government employee for the nuclear stockpile who got busted for having 187,000 porn images on his work computer!
This round of voting paired the man in the Chuck E Cheese costume who got arrested at work, against the Seattle man who rammed a fire engine because the firefighters refused the nitrous oxide whippets he was offering!
On episode 110 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers reflect on the life of famous Hollywood producer, director, actor, Rob Reiner. Tiffany and Andrew knew Rob, and all of our hosts were affected by his work ever since his first role as Meathead in All In The Family. We’re going to tell some Rob stories, and yes, the shocking comments that Trump made about Rob and his wife Michelle after they were found dead in their homes, with their son arrested on suspicion of their murder. How do the conservative Christians square this stunning lack of empathy? The coach of the Michigan University football team, Sherrone Moore, was fired recently for having a relationship with a subordinate. After he was fired, he had a pretty serious crash-out that landed him in jail. Our hosts share some of their most epic crash outs and discuss whether Moore’s affair partner should also face consequences from their employer. The shooting at Brown University last week left two dead, nine wounded, and the entire student body rattled. This one hit close to home; Angela’s godson, Efe Elaiho, is a freshman at Brown and was nearby the shooting. We’ll get a firsthand perspective on what it’s like to live through an event like this, the misinformation that flies around in the moments after, and what it’s like going through a school system where shootings have become tragically common. We’re trying to be better about getting to your questions and comments y’all, and we will get to one about patriotism today! We start with an analyis of the latest health care melodrama in D.C., where four House Republicans unexpectedly broke ranks, joining Democrats in forcing a vote on the renwal of ACA subsidies. Speaker Johnson will not hold the required vote until January. But even if it passes in the House, it will face an almost certain filibuster in the Senate. Meanwhile millions of Americans will lose healthcare coverage, and those who decide to pay skyrocketing premiums will be forced to cut back on other basics. We welcome State Representative Angelina Cruz to discuss the budget bait and switch on special education funding. The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) announced l that the state will fail to meet the 42% special education reimbursement promised in the recent state budget., and by elected leaders of both parties when they celebrated the budget "compromise." Rep. Cruz tells us about new legislation to ensure all schools get special education funding they were promised Following Rep. Cruz, we discuss a new three bill package that transforms how Wisconsin funds K-12 schools and other public goods in Wisconsin. If enacted, Wisconsin would become the first state to fund K-12 schools primarily through a progressive income tax, leading to a 44% reduction in the median Wisconsin property tax bill. Another bill restores Wisconsin's estate tax for estates valued higher than $14M and creates a new local option income tax on people who make $1M a year or more. These tools provide new, fairer options to raise revenue at the state and local levels, and begin the long process of unwinding record levels of income and wealth inequality. We also talk about this week's highly publicized trial of Judge Hannah Dugan Trial in Milwaukee, data center opponents launch a recall effort against Port Washington Mayor, and the "Monsters of the Midway" threaten to move to Indiana, the latest move in their failing (but on-going) campaign to shake down Illinois for unneeded public subsidies at the expense of schools, health care, and other public priorities. So far Illinois elected leaders are holding firm, in stark contrast to Wisconsin's bipartisan cave in to the Brewers billionaire owner last year.
On this week’s SoloPod, Angela Rye is joined by Damario Solomon-Simmons to discuss Mother Fletcher’s passing. Viola “Mother” Fletcher was one of the last survivors of the Tulsa Massacre and (with Damario’s help) a powerful advocate for reparations. Damario walks us through the ongoing fight for reparations PLUS a call to action for your holiday season: capture your families oral histories. We’ll get some tips on how to be intentional about asking your elders about their past. You can pre-order Damario’s debut book, Redeem A Nation, where books are sold. Attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons is a civil and human rights attorney, movement strategist, and author. He is the Founder and President of Justice for Greenwood and serves as legal counsel for the last known living survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. His work prompted the first-ever U.S. Department of Justice review of the massacre, helped secure the City of Tulsa’s $105 million Greenwood Trust, and played a key role in restoring citizenship rights to Black Creek Indians. Insurance headaches. Churches and private organizations, once reliable voting sites, are pulling out, according to Elections Supervisor Zach Manifold. Manifold shared the news during a meeting with Gwinnett’s state lawmakers, where elections and public safety took center stage. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson emphasized collaboration: “When local and state leaders work together, we serve our residents better.” On the safety side, Police Chief J.D. McClure highlighted staffing gains and a futuristic twist—drones as “first eyes” on crime scenes. Progress, but challenges remain. STORY 2: Brookwood High selected to participate in the GaDOE Gifted in Action series Brookwood High just got a big nod from the Georgia Department of Education—it’s been featured in the GaDOE Gifted in Action series, a webinar collection for educators working with gifted and talented students. Not a marathon, not two, but *four*. The 2025 Mill Creek grad and Georgia Tech freshman had always pushed himself, running cross country in high school and now with Georgia Tech’s club team. But this? This was next level. “It’s a big jump,” he admitted. “With my foot surgery coming up, I figured this might be my last shot.” But Holden didn’t just run for himself. He ran for Molly Kate Cloer, the little sister of his high school teammate Tyler, who has Williams Syndrome. Inspired by their family, he turned his grueling goal into a fundraiser, raising over $8,000 for the cause. The run itself? Brutal. By mile 60, his injured foot was screaming. By mile 80, the park closed, forcing him to finish in a church parking lot. Every step hurt. But his parents, old teammates, and even strangers showed up to cheer him on, some running alongside him. After 25 hours, 33 minutes, and 32 seconds, Holden crossed the finish line—exhausted, in pain, but surrounded by love. STORY 7: Northside Hospital Gwinnett named one of nation's best for maternity care Northside Hospital Gwinnett just got some big news—it’s officially one of the best places in the country to have a baby, according to *U.S. News & World Report*. Last year alone, they delivered 4,245 babies. Northside Gwinnett also scored high marks in 15 other areas, from heart surgery to stroke care. When you’re here, you’re family. This round paired the knucklehead from March against the champ from April! A woman got both of her hands bitten off by a shark she tried to take a selfie with...against a man from New Jersey who started a fire with a pile of sex toys, the fire burned down 3 houses and 2 cars! Shark lady advanced with your votes!!
This round paired the knucklehead from January vs February's knucklehead! A man in Germany stepped off a bullet train for a cigarette and clung to the outside as it left and sped to 175 mph...and the 2 stoners who decided that one of them could still avoid a bullet from a gun, he was sadly mistaken!
Surely that judge throwing out the election result in Auckland has started the clock ticking on postal voting. This case may not seem a big deal given that it involves just 79 votes, in just one subdivision, in just one relatively small local board election in Auckland. But the 79 may just be the tip of the iceberg. It may be that hundreds of ballot papers in that subdivision were stolen from letterboxes, filled in and sent in as legit votes. Now Ken Turner from the Waitakere's is also considering legal options because he reckons something funny happened with 212 votes in his election too. None of this is a surprise to me because years ago when friends of mine were flatting, as happens, mail turned up for previous tenants. Some of that mail was voting papers. So my friends filled the papers in and sent them all back in as legitimate votes and no one ever got in trouble for it. We all know the mail voting system is ripe for being gamed. But perhaps in our naivety we hadn't imagined it would go from a bunch of silly flatties to what seems like may have been an orchestrated rigging of an election. Postal voting should go the way of the horse and cart. It's not the only reason so many of us can't be bothered with council elections, but it is a significant part of it. You get the mail, pop it on the counter, forget about it, find it after election day is well past, or find it too hard to remember where to find a post box. Not only does it make it harder to vote, it also makes it harder to trust the election outcome. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A local board election has been voided, and voters will have to go back to the polls, after a judge ruled fraudulent voting had "permeated or infected" the election. Simon Mitchell, KC spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Confidence isn't something you're born with. It's built through everyday choices, skills, and brave moments. In this episode, we explore how dental assistants grow into confident professionals who protect patients, their practices, and themselves while helping reduce errors along the way. Kevin Henry talks with Tosha Gurley, a dental assistant turned safety consultant and educator, about her journey and the real-life incident that sparked her passion for infection control and compliance. They discuss how education, strong workplace culture, and speaking up create safer, more effective teams, and how embracing leadership and ongoing learning empowers dental assistants to elevate both their careers and patient care. On episode 109 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers discuss Jasmine Crockett’s campaign launch, and bring on one of our favorite guests: Elie Mystal. Racial profiling, birthright citizenship, executive power, and campaign finance are all up for judgement by the US Supreme Court. There’s no one better to walk us through SCOTUS’s recent and upcoming decisions than the Justice Correspondent for The Nation, Elie Mystal. Elie on Executive Power: https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/supreme-court-ftc-slaughter/ Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX 30) is running for senate in Texas in 2026. There’s a lot of chatter out there about her announcement, that she’s a Republican plant, that she can’t win–and it’s true that it’s tough for a Dem to win a senate seat in Texas. Our hosts take a critical look at the media coverage of her announcement and speculate on a possible path to victory. We’ll get to more of your questions this week, including one about legacy media’s complicity in the Trump administration's agenda. A lot of y’all had smoke for Tiffany in the questions this week, we’ll get to those in our MiniPod. Richard Mann is back on the show and we discuss a subject I know you'll enjoy: our favorite cartridges for hunting virtually any species of big game. We're play little game where Richard and I each list our favorite cartridge and bullet for hunting specific species of game ranging from coues whitetail all the way up to thick skinned species of African game like cape buffalo and elephant and almost everything in between like mule deer, elk, black bear, etc. The catch is we cannot reuse a cartridge for multiple species. Even so, our discussion provides an interesting glimpse into the thought process he and I each use for selecting cartridges and bullets for hunting different species of game.
