It's time to go back to the summer of 1997 with the British comedy and Dave's pick for the week, The Full Monty. Directed by Peter Cattaneo and written by Simon Beaufoy, the film was shot on a tight budget of £3.5 million in Sheffield, England, the industrial city where the story is set. The choice of location was pivotal, as it allowed the filmmakers to authentically depict the struggles of a working-class community hit hard by economic decline. The production team used local landmarks and worked with real residents to add an extra layer of realism to the film. Despite financial constraints, the crew maximized resources, crafting a story that was both intimate and universal. Casting played a crucial role in bringing the film to life, with Robert Carlyle leading the ensemble as Gaz. Many of the actors were lesser-known at the time, which lent authenticity to their portrayals of everyday men grappling with unemployment and self-doubt. The iconic final striptease scene was a nerve-wracking challenge for the cast, as it required them to overcome their own anxieties to deliver a pivotal, uplifting moment. Set to a soundtrack of classic tunes like Hot Chocolate's You Sexy Thing and Tom Jones's You Can Leave Your Hat On, the film captured a perfect blend of humor and pathos. To the surprise of its creators, The Full Monty became a sleeper hit, earning over $250 million worldwide and multiple awards, including an Oscar for Beaufoy's screenplay. They hatch a bold plan to perform a one-night-only striptease act to earn quick cash. Led by the charming but down-on-his-luck Gaz, the ragtag group includes his best friend Dave, who battles body image issues, and Gerald, their former boss hiding his own unemployment. As they awkwardly rehearse their routine, the men bond over their shared struggles, discovering newfound confidence and camaraderie. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

We're back with another wild one here at Queen Venerator. Sean's pick for this week is a "mixtape" of songs that got him into music before high school. This is a VERY 90's heavy episode as Sean and Brad discuss Blind Melon, Bush, Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, and a bunch of movie soundtrack songs. Did you know that Deee-Lite did a cover of "You Sexy Thing" for the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack? You do now. Also, since its Sean and Brad, they stray from the topic to discuss Channel One, Exit 13, Brujeria, and Fruitopia. Also also, eagle-eared listeners might be able to tell that Brad is sick as hell during this recording and struggling to stay upright. Fun! Also also also, YO PEANUT, BEAT THAT THING! Hometown shows, cookie dough, and Atlanta in August. In today's episode, NYC resident Brad Mislow talks us through Phish's performance of "2001" from the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater at Encore Park, or simply, Alpharetta. This version closed a 3-night run and is, to date, the only version of the song to close a show.Although he has lived in New York for the past 21 years, Brad is originally from the Atlanta area and these were his first shows in the area since 1997. A classic version of one of Phish's best covers, Brad chose this version because it exemplifies why he will see them again and again. It starts out as your standard 2001 build but in the middle Trey starts adding “You Sexy Thing” quotes and the band follows. He then adds “Tweezer Reprise” quotes, and all of a sudden, they're playing three songs at the same time. Mind blowing. Woodson said teaching black history was essential to ensure physical and 45. intellectual survival. - "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated. The American Indian left no continuous record. He did not appreciate the value of 46. tradition; and where is he today? Started singing early, formed a girl group at age eleven. Changed her name to Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi at thirteen and started running around with the Fred Hampton and the Panthers. In 1969, at age16, she dropped out of high school, left the Panthers, and focused on singing with local bands. In 1973, she joined the band Rufus. The first album in 1973 was a dud, but Stevie Wonder was so impressed by Chaka Khan's vocals, he wanted to write a song specifically for her. "Tell Me Something Good", written by Stevie, on their 1974 album won a Grammy. (He also played harmonica on 'I Feel For You'.). But, because of her increasing popularity the record label started calling the group Rufus "Featuring" Chaka Khan, (which was the title of their fourth album that had the hit single "Sweet Thing") and this caused tension in the band. She was back and forth with the group for a few years. Went solo in 1978 and became a legend. (10 Grammys, 8 of them solo) 93. [Audio Clip] 94. Open Comments: 95. Movie Scene 96. Notable releases 97. Most of the problems the gang faces here are typical of what kids from any community have to deal with. There are many accounts about the rise of Disco bubbling up from as late as the 60's. Frankly, I won't go back that far because it really wasn't on people's radar until around 1973-74. Many soul artists were picking up on the faster rhythmic beats and had massive success with songs like "Armed and Extremely Dangerous" by First Choice, "The Love I Lost" by Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes, "You're The First, the Last, My Everything" by Barry White, "Doctor's Orders" by Carol Douglas, "Get Dancin'" by Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes, "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrae, "Never Can Say Goodbye" by Gloria Gaynor, "Rock the Boat" by The Hues Corporation, and many more. By 1975-76, the disco sound moved from the underground clubs and minor radio hits to mainstream radio and number one hits like "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" by Barry White, "The Hustle" by Van McCoy & The Soul City Orchestra, "Love To Love You, Baby" by Donna Summer, "Movin'" by Brass Construction, "Brazil" by The Ritchie Family, "You Sexy Thing" by Hot Chocolate, "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry, and even "Fame" by David Bowie. By 1977, all bets were off and Disco had made the final leap from the underground to mainstream domination and it only got more popular from there for the rest of the 70's into the early 80's before the backlash began. The first 12" extended play single goes to "Love To Love You, Baby" by Donna Summer. After Giorgio Moroder had played the single at a party, people began requesting it over and over. He soon came to the notion of creating a much longer version that people could enjoy in the clubs, which gave birth to 15 minutes of orgasmic perfection with Donna's sultry vocals. Technically, there were other earlier long plays but this track is wildly credited for making them more mainstream. If you lived in New York, Studio 54 was the place to be for anybody that was somebody. All the "A" list stars showed up to see and be seen. Grace Jones, Cher, Debbie Harry and many more were regular fixtures at the club. For those that couldn't get into 54, Paradise Garage and The Loft were the go-to spots for the anything-goes openly gay experience and played many notable underground tracks that never made it to radio. This era of the late 70's and early 80's is notable for its excesses. Drugs, open sex, and basically an anything-goes attitude, gave way to the AIDS epidemic of the early 80's. You cannot exactly discount the connection between the two. Nevertheless, it was a time of carefree expression when people wanted to escape the realities of high inflation, high gas prices, and a staggering economy of the post-Nixon-Watergate era. I've often dreamt about growing up during this period but even I admit to my own personal excesses during the 80's and 90's and would likely be dead today had I grown up during the disco revolution. Regardless, you just can't escape the amazing music that came out of this period, which is the basis for everything that has succeeded it. Whether it was House Music, NRG, Techno, Trance, and on down the line, Disco and all its glorious variants are what started it all and is the main reason it's so heavily sampled in today's music. For all its lack of social values and hedonistic tendencies, I adore Disco. While I am a massive fan of ALL music for my many moods, Disco is the only one I always gravitate towards when I need a pick-me-up. It's like a good friend that I can always rely on to make me happy. I hope everyone is enjoying these sets as much as I am putting them all together for you. I've already got volume 6 in the can and then need to start working on the fast beats, which will likely be the final set. Since I'm running behind in my schedule, I'll likely drop the next volume on Friday. Until then...ENJOY! JUNE of 1971 “One World” by Rare Earth Detroit-based Rare Earth brought a funk rock fusion sound to the scene. Motown was looking to expand its repertoire and signed Rare Earth to a yet-to-be-named record label more focused on white rock acts. When members of Rare Earth suggested that they name the record label "Rare Earth," Motown surprisingly decided to do so. Rare Earth had a string of successes in the late 60's and early 70's, and this fourth album entitled One World was one of these successful albums. Rare Earth was a conservation minded group, but did so with a positive and psychedelic slant. We hope you enjoy this venture into a great album from Rare Earth. “The Seed” This is an environmentally focused track. Does the seed bloom or does it die? “Any Man Can Be a Fool” This track talks about what it means to be a man. Lots of solid rock groups came out of Detroit at the time, including Grand Funk Railroad, Alice Cooper, and Ted Nugent. “When I Die” The Vietnam War was a big issue at the time, and this song tells of a solder who wants to make sure his body is brought home. The great harmonies and the chromatic progression with a minor key slant set the tone nicely. “I Just Want to Celebrate” This is the big hit off the album, and is a mainstay of rock and roll funk. It has a positive, soulful sound, and was a top 10 song at the time. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Pure Imagination” by Gene Wilder You’ll recognize this piece from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," which was released in June 1971. STAFF PICKS: “Indian Reservation” by Paul Revere and the Raiders Rob shares that this song was actually written in 1959, and a hit in 1968. When Paul Revere and the Raiders covered it in 1971, this song became their only hot 100 number 1 hit. “(I Know) I'm Losing You” by Rod Stewart Bruce shares this cover — perhaps the best known iteration of the Temptations song. A number of people covered it, including Rare Earth in 1970. Most (perhaps all) of The Faces played on this song. “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” by Lobo This soft rock song went to number 5 on the Billboard hot 100. Brian loves it, and feels It reflects the back-to-earth feel that was popular in the early 70's. “Could’ve Been a Lady” by Hot Chocolate This is the original soul rock version that was covered by April Wine a year later. This is a solid break-up song. Wayne points out that Hot Chocolate is better known for their song "You Sexy Thing." LAUGH TRACK: “Chick-a-Boom” by Daddy Dewdrop This comedy song finishes off our episode this week. Don't you just love it?
As promised, Party Favorz is back with even more smoldering summer dance club tracks! We pick the hits, so you don't have to hunt for them on Spotify. Okay, that may be an overstatement, but we (meaning I) do my best to ensure you're getting the latest and greatest along with upcoming club tracks that are hitting my radar and wrapping them up in one tight continuous dance set. After all, who wants a bunch of random radio edits that fade in out? You can listen to the radio for free for that. Beach Party 2018 part 2 takes on a whole new direction in that not only did I include a multitude of current and upcoming hits but picked up some fun disco and house classics that have been reworked for today's dancefloor. It definitely keeps things interesting. For instance, KC & the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight" has been entirely revamped and is currently blowing up just about every chart I've seen and rightfully so. Though it's a tad bit overcompressed (beyond my control), the disco original explodes with synths and heavy bass making it a perfect staple for a new generation. Equally, Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing" get's an overhaul with Softmal's "I Believe In Miracles," which creates a sense of relevance and fun for today's listeners while keeping bouncy playfulness of the original nearly intact. There are many others included here that go by different names, but you'll instantly recognize them once the chorus hits. Other tracks that I've been all over include AuRa and Camelphat's "Panic Room" and Sofi Tukker's playful disco-infused "Batshit" courtesy of Purple Disco Machine. With new tracks from P!nk, Sultan + Shepard, Vassy, Jonas Blue, Ariana Grande, Troy Sivan and the song of the summer "I Like It" by Cardi B; it's almost like Christmas in summer.

Originally established as a side project from Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club comprised a loose aggregation of musicians, sound engineers and artists of the Compass Point All Stars family, including Tina Weymouth's sisters and guitarist Adrian Belew, the latter of whom toured with Weymouth and Frantz in the expanded version of Talking Heads in 1980 and 1981. In 1991, Frantz and Tina Weymouth built the Clubhouse, a painting and music studio, over their garage near Gamecock Island, Connecticut. In 1992 they released the fourth Tom Tom Club album, Dark Sneak Love Action, which included a cover of Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing". The album focused on the burgeoning techno-music scene. A single, "Sunshine & Ecstasy," featured remixes by Roger Sanchez. The group's next album, The Good, the Bad, and the Funky, was released in 2000 and featured cover versions of Donna Summer's "Love to Love You, Baby" and Lee Perry's "Soul Fire". One of the album's tracks, "Who Feelin' It", was also featured in remixed form in the soundtrack album of the 1999 film American Psycho. Among the musicians on The Good the Bad and the Funky are Jamaican singer Mystic Bowie, Pettigrew and Toots of Toots & the Maytals. The album's release was followed by one European, and several American, tours. In 2002, Frantz and Tina Weymouth, along with their former Talking Heads bandmates, were inducted at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. In 2007, the band released a special Christmas single called "Mistletunes", containing two specially recorded Christmas songs: "Il est Ne" and "Christmas in the Club", which features Mystic Bowie and scratcher/turntableist Kid Ginseng .
