Mit Giorgio Moroder, Michael Holm, Penny McLean, Reinhold Mack, Jens Poenitsch u.a.

Copenhagen has long been a paragon in urban planning circles. Karsten Palsson, CEO of Palsson Urbanism, says it's under threat from commercial development interests and weakened government, and now is the time to rearticulate and potentially export the principles that made it a paragon in the first place. Unfrozen sits with the author of "How to Design Humane Cities - Public Spaces and Urbanity," and the new "Urban Block Cities - 10 principles for Contemporary Planning." 00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 02’50” Cabecera 00h 03’26” ELISABETH 00h 03’26” Prolog 00h 07’09” Der letzte Tanz 00h 10’37” Ich gehör mir 00h 14’32” Elisabeth, mach auf mein Engel 00h 18’35” Die Schatten warden langer 00h 23’01” Boote in der Nacht 00h 27’42” Der Schleier fällt 00h 30’11” MOZART! 00h 30’11” Schliess dein herz in eisen sin 00h 33’33” Gold falls from Heaven 00h 37’11” Ich bleibe in Wien! 00h 40’21” My shadow always follows me 00h 44’19” Dich kennen heist dich lieben 00h 48’11” Somewhere there’s always a ball 00h 52’16” How can it be 00h 54’59” Mozart, Mozart! 00h 58’07” REBECCA 00h 58’07” Last night 01h 01’17” She’s invincible 01h 04’17” I’ll never forget her smile 01h 10’07” Free now 01h 12’54” Rebecca 01h 16’28” Manderley’s on fire 01h 18’51” MARIA ANTOINETTE 01h 18’51” Illusionen 01h 22’06” Turn, turn 01h 24’01” Blind vom licht der vielen Ker 01h 27’46” Wenn (Maskenspiel) 01h 31’22” A voice in my heart 01h 35’18” Gefühl und Verstand 01h 38’48” Gott sieht uns zu 01h 41’48” Das einzige, was richtig ist 01h 45’39” Warum muss ich sein, was ich nicht bin?
00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 02’08” Cabecera 00h 02’44” Save me 00h 06’53” I like it 00h 11’39” Fly, Robin, fly 00h 16’54” Always another girl 00h 22’10” Tiger baby 00h 26’19” Please don’t change the chords 00h 31’02” Get up and boogie 00h 34’54” Thank you Mr. D.J. 00h 37’50” Madhouse 00h 44’04” Fancy party 00h 49’10” Dancing in the aisle 00h 54’26” Everybody’s talking ‘bout love 00h 57’54” Land of make believe 01h 00’49” Summer nights 01h 04’49” Voodoo woman 01h 08’42” Telegram 01h 14’05” Ain’t it like a Hollywood movie 01h 19’04” Take me, shake me, wake me 01h 22’49” Spend the night with me 01h 27’13” Breakfast in bed 01h 30’59” FLASHDANCE – Romeo – Donna Summer 01h 34’12” TIME BOMB 01h 37’30” COBRA – Chase 01h 40’58” COBRA – Cobra 01h 44’00” COBRA – Skyline 01h 47’19” HOWARD THE DUCK – Howard’s Bar brawl 01h 48’49” HOWARD THE DUCK – Shoot to kill 01h 52’57” HOWARD THE DUCK – Ultralight #3 01h 57’11” NAVY SEALS – Main title 02h 00’14” NAVY SEALS – The first mission 02h 02’12” NAVY SEALS – Search theme 02h 06’59” HOT SHOTS! – Main theme 02h 09’32” HOT SHOTS! – Sea maneuvers 02h 11’19” HOT SHOTS! – This is for you, dad 02h 12’53” HOT SHOTS! – Love theme 02h 15’05” FLASHFIRE – Main theme 02h 18’37” MEDICOPTER – Absprung

This was the Convention's first hit single, and also their best! This is a copy of the second (and primary) pressing, which has a track length of 3:05 and "Tiger Baby" on the B side. (A less common earlier pressing has a track length of 3:45 and "Chains of Love" on the flip.) Both 45s have edited versions of the 5:31 album cut. I had to celebrate the great audio on this 45 with an mp3 "snippet" of it... Enjoy! Note: This beautiful 45 has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio).

Plenty of workers could make Crowley County their home – The southern Colorado county has state and private prisons, schools and a growing cannabis cultivation industry. But there aren't enough places for them to live. And as the supply of houses and apartments has declined in the rural county east of Pueblo, few developers are interested in building there. Now, federal stimulus money will help to add 127 homes there. Colorado Sun Reporter Tatiana Flowers is interviewing fellow Sun Reporter Thy Vo, who has the story. Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Thursday January 28th, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Today - The Colorado eviction moratorium has ended, but the national one has been extended, The Sun’s Tamara Chuang is here today to explain what tenants need to know. But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we’re going back to January 28th, 1885 when the Rocky Mountain News declared that Denver should be chosen as the meeting place of a body of men representing the silver producers of the country. 1500 delegates attended the National Silver Convention. Three juveniles have been arrested in connection with a north Denver house fire that killed five members of a Senegalese family in August. The boys face 28 charges, including first-degree murder with extreme indifference, burglary, arson and assault. Police said the fire did not appear to be a hate crime. The U.S. Department of Justice has settled fraud allegations against a global marketing company whose main sales office is in Westminster. Epsilon Data Management will pay $150 million for selling consumer data to perpetrators of elder fraud schemes. Most of the fine will go to fraud victims. Water managers across Colorado have rallied together in a rare show of solidarity to strongly oppose Wall Street speculation on the state’s water resources. Western water law prevents profiteering, but industry leaders are still ready to fight private investors to keep water a public resource. Carpenters - Crescent Noon (Demo) (1968) This is from the Cal State University Of Long Beach chorus album, one of those that schools commission and then give or sell copies to members. Obviously it is quite rare .. probably less than 200 ever made, and who knows how many have survived. Written by Richard Carpenter. Carpenters - Crescent Noon (1970) "Notice the lower key," he offered to no one, swirling his brandy snifter. Carpenters - Road Ode (1972) Carpenters - B'wana She No Home (1977) Written by Michael Franks. Karen Carpenter - My Body Keeps Changing My Mind (1980) From Karen Carpenter's unreleased (in her life) solo album. I love Wikipedia but this account doesn't do justice to how devastated she was when she played it for Richard. Karen Carpenter - Jimmy Mack (1980) Karen Carpenter - Midnight (Never Let You Down) (1980) Carpenters - Get Together (1969) Richard on lead vocals. Carpenters - Looking For Love (1966) Carpenters - Mr. Gruder (1970) Carpenters - You'll Love Me (1967) Richard Chamberlain - They Long To Be Close To You (1963) The original recording. Carpenters - Your Wonderful Parade (1969) Carpenters - Piano Picker (1972) Les Humphries Singers - Niagara/Paranoid (1971) Formed by Englishman Les Humphries in Berlin in the early '70s, the Les Humphries Singers performed a mix of gospel, R&B, pop, and rock that was not dissimilar to the work that would make Boney M European superstars. The group's biggest hits were the singles "Mexico" and "Mama Loo," released in 1972 and 1973 respectively. The ensemble also represented Germany at the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest, but was to break up soon after. Other members of the Les Humphries Singers also went on to success in their own right, with Liz Mitchell going on to front Boney M, and John Lawton finding a home as the frontman for Uriah Heep. Humphries himself passed away in December of 2007. Another member was Jürgen Drews, who later started a long-running solo career, starting with his 1976 hit in Germany, "Ein Bett im Kornfeld", a cover version of "Let Your Love Flow" by The Bellamy Brothers. Linda Thompson (Linda Übelherr), who had previously been a member of the Cornely Singers and Love Generation, was a member from 1973 to 1974, and later joined Silver Convention, and had a solo career as Linda G. Thompson. God damn I love this. Richard Carpenter - Say Yeah! (1987) Les Humphries Singers - Cracklin' Rose/Carry That Weight/Travelin' Man/Keep Knockin' (1971, I think) Ripping off "Living Loving Maid" for the intro to "Keep Knockin'". Les Humphries is a hero for his balls alone. Les Humphries Singers - Indian War (1976) Les Humphries Singers - Mandy's Dead (1974) What the fuck is this? Jimmy Bilsbury's Manchester band before LHS. Magic Lanterns - Bossa Nova 1940-Hello You Lovers (1969) Magic Lanterns - I Stumbled (1967) Magic Lanterns - Simple Things (1966) Ananda Shankar - Light My Fire (1970) Beach Boys - God Only Knows (a cappella) (1966) Dennis Coffey & Luchi De Jesus - Theme Form "Black Belt Jones" (1972) Buddy & Cathy Rich - The Beat Goes On (1967) TM - Charles Lloyd (1972)
While they were a moderate regional success as a band with three studio albums, Kiss was most notable for their live performances. They would not be vaulted into super-stardom until this breakthrough live album Alive! was released in September of 1975. It peaked on the Billboard 200 album charts at number 9 in December of that year, and that's why we're featuring this album in this month.Kiss is well known today not only because of their success as a band, but they also heavily marketed their brand in everything from movies to lunch boxes to a comic book (to which they famously contributed drops of their blood in the ink vat). All members contributed to vocals, and instruments featured Paul Stanley on rhythm guitar, Ace Frehley on lead guitar, Gene Simmons on bass guitar, and Peter Criss on drums. This double album relied on the catalog of songs from their first three studio albums, but the energy of the live show that was captured in this compilation is what drew the fans, and what kept it on the album charts for 110 weeks.Of course, in addition to their performance, Kiss is known for their outlandish costumes and makeup, with Criss as the Catman, Stanley as Starchild, Frehley as the Spaceman, and Simmons as the Demon, they looked like something straight out of the pages of a comic book. The band would maintain the makeup until the 80's, when they would go into an "unmasked" phase for a decade before returning to their classic over-the-top look.“You wanted the best, you got the best, the hottest band in the land - Kiss!”DeuceThis is the first song on side A, and Gene Simmons takes duties as the front man to lead off the album. “Baby if you're feeling good, and baby if you're feeling nice, you know your man is workin' hard - He's worth a deuce.” The track is also special to lead guitarist Ace Frehley, who auditioned for the group to this song.Hotter than HellNever one for subtlety, this song is a tribute to a good looking woman. The back story is that Paul Stanley was hitting on a lady, and he was rejected because she was married. Paul Stanley is on lead vocals here, and he wrote the song as well.Black DiamondPaul Stanley start the song in the introduction, then Peter Criss takes on lead singing duties here. The song was originally the closing track to their first studio album, and was often used to close their regular concert set with huge pyrotechnics and the Kiss theatrics that were the signature of the band. Let Me Go, Rock 'n' RollThe concluding song on side D is also the only single released from their second studio album. Written jointly by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, this song was the final song of the encore for their shows, and make sense to conclude this album as well.ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sky High by JigsawThis song was the main title from the film "The Man from Hong Kong," which was released this month. You get the funk-disco feel that was prevalent at the time.STAFF PICKS:Have a Cigar by Pink FloydBruce leads off the staff picks with this Rager Waters-penned screed against the hypocrisy of the music industry. Interestingly, this was sung by Roy Harper, an English fok singer who was in the studio at the time, instead of either Waters or Gilmore. This is one of our more frequent lyric quotes: "The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think. Oh, by the way, which one's Pink?"Fox on the Run by SweetRob brings us a song reworked from Sweet's European release. After releasing it in 1974, the glam rock band created a more upbeat version for the U.S. This song became a number 1 hit on iTunes in 2016 beacuse of its inclusion in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” My Little Town by Simon and GarfunkelBrian's staff pick brings the reunion of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. They broke up in 1970, but Simon wrote the song for Garfunkel as a critique of the small blue collar town Garfunkel grew up in. They would perform together again in the third episode of Saturday Night Live. This song appeared on both Paul Simon's and Art Garfunkel's solo studio albums.Fire on the Mountain by The Marshall Tucker BandWayne takes us into the Southern Rock genre with this tragic song about a family moving from the Carolinas to California in the California Gold Rush. “Now my widow she weeps by my grave, tears flow free for her man she couldn't save. Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame, all for a useless and no good worthless claim.” It was written for the Charlie Daniel's Band, but it became one of The Marshall Tucker Band's bigger hits after CDB chose not to use it.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Fly, Robin, Fly by Silver ConventionWhile it technically include lyrics...this disco hit is close enough to an instrumental for our purposes.

Why is she being featured: "Sweet Thing", she is breaking out, and I don't want to cover disco yet. 91. Short story: 92. Born and raised in Chicago housing projects, the oldest of five. Started singing early, formed a girl group at age eleven. Changed her name to Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi at thirteen and started running around with the Fred Hampton and the Panthers. In 1969, at age16, she dropped out of high school, left the Panthers, and focused on singing with local bands. In 1973, she joined the band Rufus. The first album in 1973 was a dud, but Stevie Wonder was so impressed by Chaka Khan's vocals, he wanted to write a song specifically for her. "Tell Me Something Good", written by Stevie, on their 1974 album won a Grammy. (He also played harmonica on 'I Feel For You'.). But, because of her increasing popularity the record label started calling the group Rufus "Featuring" Chaka Khan, (which was the title of their fourth album that had the hit single "Sweet Thing") and this caused tension in the band. She was back and forth with the group for a few years. Went solo in 1978 and became a legend. (10 Grammys, 8 of them solo) 93. [Audio Clip] 94. Open Comments: 95. Movie Scene 96. Notable releases 97. Critic Review: "Car Wash initially left critics unimpressed (except for Roger Ebert who correctly called it a "wash-and-wax M*A*S*H") but over the decades both the film and the soundtrack have left their mark on pop culture. With its Afros, bell-bottoms, cars as big as boats, and disco soundtrack, Car Wash is a perfect time-capsule of America's bicentennial year." - http://www.threemoviebuffs.com/review/car-wash.html 108. Short Story: Loosely based on Cooley High. What's Happening!! follows the lives of three working-class African-American teens living in Watts. 115. Critic Review: Unlike its contemporary Good Times, What's Happening!! isn't committed to presenting enlightening social commentary or providing empowering African-American role models. Most of the problems the gang faces here are typical of what kids from any community have to deal with. While the show has its funny moments (especially when Dee offers her strong, often sarcastic opinions), much of the show's humor stems from a slapstick-like comedy style that's reminiscent of the minstrel show stereotypes of the 1930s - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/whats-happening 116. Donald Goines, the ‘Godfather of Urban Fiction.’ (36yrs old): Criminal, drug addict, Author. From 1969 -1974 he published 16 novels that helped establish the genre. 34. Urban fiction working definition: Works of art set in urban America dealing with drugs, violence, and sex, involving African 35. American or Latino characters. The genre is also known as Street Fiction, Gangsta Lit, Ghetto Lit, or Hip-Hop Fiction. 36. Goines was born in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were a middle-class African-American couple that ran a laundry business. At 15 Goines lied about his age to join the Air Force, where he fought in the Korean War. During his stint in the armed forces, Goines developed an addiction to heroin that continued after his discharge from the military in the mid-1950s. To support his addiction, Goines turned to crime, this included pimping, and theft. He began writing while serving a sentence in Michigan's Jackson Penitentiary. Goines initially attempted to write westerns but decided to write urban fiction after reading Iceberg Slim's autobiography Pimp: The Story of My Life. 37. Goines continued to write novels at an accelerated pace to support his drug addictions, sixteen books in five years, with some books taking only a month to complete. His series about Kenyatta (under the name Al C. Clark) describes a black revolutionary, who campaigns against exploitation and evils of inner-city life. On October 21, 1974, Goines and his common-law wife were discovered dead in their Detroit apartment. The police had received an anonymous phone call and responded, discovering Goines in the living room of the apartment and his common-law wife Shirley Sailor's body in the kitchen. 38. Goines books are still popular, especially in the prison system. His books have gone on to sell millions of copies and have never been out of print, making him one of the most successful African-American authors in history. 39. His books have been utilized in several prison literacy programs and his novel "Dopefiend" (1971) has been taught in a Rutgers University class. 40. Other popular titles: Whoreson (1972), Black Gangster (1972), Street Players (1973), White Man's Justice, Black Man's Grief (1973), and Black Girl Lost (1974) 41. ***Question: has anyone read his books? 42. Donald's work was deeply influenced by Iceberg Slim. 43. In 1961, after serving 10 months of solitary confinement in a Cook County jail, Robert Maupin (a.k.a. Slim) decided he was too old for a life of pimping and was unable to compete with younger, more ruthless pimps. In an interview with the Washington Post, he said he retired "because I was old. I did not want to be teased, tormented and brutalized by young whores." 44. In 1967, he published two books; A memoir, "Pimp: The Story of My Life" and the novel "Trick Baby" 45. ***Question: has anyone read his books? 46. Iceberg and Donald's work made a HUGE impact on the youth growing up in the 70's and 80's. 47. "Pimp" inspired the screenplay for the 1973 film "The Mack", starring Max Julien and Richard Pryor. 48. Various other entertainers were also influenced by Goines and Slim: Dave Chappelle, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Katt Williams, 49. Eddie Griffin, Ice-T, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Ludacris, Nas, and Jay-Z, just to name a few. 50. Iceberg and Donald also proved that a commercial "Black" book market did exist. 51. A new "post" Hip-Hop revival of contemporary urban fiction happened at the end of the 1990s, as demand for novels authentically conveying the urban experience increased, and new business models enabled fledgling writers to more easily bring a manuscript to market and to libraries. 52. One of the first writers in this new cycle of urban fiction was Omar Tyree, who published the novel Flyy Girl. 53. The genre gained significant momentum in 1999 with Sister Souljah's bestseller The Coldest Winter Ever. Teri Woods's True to the Game was also published in 1999.The publishing of these three novels created a momentum of readership for urban fiction and carried that wave for years. All three books are considered classics in the renaissance of the genre. 54. Major writers of contemporary urban fiction include Wahida Clark, Vickie Stringer, Nikki Turner, Kole Black, K'wan, Toy Styles, Kwame Teague, and the writing duo Meesha Mink & De'Nesha Diamond. 55. ***Question: has anyone read any of these books? 56. The reach of urban fiction into a large youth readership is undeniable today, particularly among adolescent girls. 57. Critics and supporters are pleased that Black youth are reading. But some have mixed feelings about promoting literacy by any means necessary. “To some extent, there is an exposure to a part of urban culture that has rarely been explored in a way that it is now…which can be a starting point for civic dialogues,” offers Tracey Michae’l Lewis, who teaches writing and literature at Community College of Philadelphia and Philadelphia University. “Unfortunately, we have to ask ourselves, ‘What is this costing us?’” 58. Scholars have differing opinions on Urban Fiction. Some believe that it is low reading, like a trashy book, that is not of high quality. Those who believe this think that prisoners and adolescent should be reading more elevated works. 59. On the other hand, are scholars who say that African Americans appear to be reading street lit to find themselves and escape themselves at the same time. Some readers just enjoy losing themselves in portrayals of lavish lifestyles, racy sex and ride-or-die dramas of the streets, while others enjoy the genre for its reflective qualities. 60. Born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, he became one of the most influential comedians in the history of comedy. Few comics today will talk about their own careers without mentioning the inspiration they received from Pryor. A talented yet controversial man, most people either love him unconditionally or hate him passionately. 117. Early Life: For much of his youth, Pryor was left in his grandmother's care and lived in the brothel she ran. He also experienced sexual abuse as a child, according to his official website. To step away from the grim reality of his life, Pryor found solace in going to the movies. Expelled from school at age 14, Pryor ended up working a string of jobs until he joined the military in 1958. He served in the army for only two years, as he was discharged for fighting with another soldier. 118. Early Career: Returning home, he found work as a stand-up comic throughout the Midwest, playing African-American clubs in such cities as East St. Louis and Pittsburgh. In 1963, Pryor moved to New York City. The following year, he made his television debut on the variety show On Broadway Tonight. Guest appearances followed on such programs as The Merv Griffin Show and The Ed Sullivan Show. At the time, his act was modeled after two African-American comedians he admired, Bill Cosby and Dick Gregory. 119. In 1960, while playing in Las Vegas at the Flamingo Hotel, he had a panic attack and walked off stage. He wanted to give voice to the winos, pimps, dealers, and other characters in his head. He retreated to Berkeley, California, where he met a variety of counterculture figures, including Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton. 120. Mainstream Success: In the early 1970s, Pryor scored several successes as an actor and comedian. He earned positive reviews for his supporting role in the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues (1972), starring Diana Ross. In 1973, he netted his first Emmy Award nomination (outstanding writing achievement in comedy, variety) for his work on The Lily Tomlin Show. The following year, Pryor took home his first Emmy (best writing in comedy, variety) for another collaboration with Lily Tomlin: the comedy special Lily (1973). Pryor also wrote for such shows as The Flip Wilson Show and Sanford and Son, which starred comedian Redd Foxx. Continuing to thrive professionally, Pryor co-starred with Max Julien in the film "The Mack" 91973) and worked with Mel Brooks on the screenplay for the western spoof Blazing Saddles (1974). His own work was also attracting a lot of attention. Despite its X-rated content, his third comedy albums sold extremely well and won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recordings in 1974, 1975, and 1976. 121. Fans of all racial backgrounds were captivated by Pryor's comedy, which consisted of situational and character-driven humor in place of straightforward jokes. He poked fun at the white establishment and explored the racial divide. By the late 1970s, Pryor had a thriving career as a stand-up comic and movie actor. 122. Audio Clips 123. Later Years: In 1986, Pryor was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects the central nervous system. By the early 1990s, the once-kinetic Pryor was confined to a wheelchair. The comedian wrote the autobiography Pryor Convictions: And Other Life Sentences with Todd Gold, earning critical acclaim upon its release in 1995. In 2001, Pryor remarried Jennifer Lee. He spent his final years with her at his California home. Outside of performing, Pryor was an advocate for animal rights and opposed animal testing. He established Pryor's Planet, a charity for animals. 125. Death and Legacy: On December 10, 2005, Pryor died of a heart attack at a Los Angeles area hospital. In addition to providing audiences with both hilarious and moving performances, he paved the way for African-American comedians like Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock to make their mark. "Pryor started it all. He made the blueprint for the progressive thinking of black comedians, unlocking that irreverent style," comedian and filmmaker Keenen Ivory Wayans explained to The New York Times. 126. ***Question: Given his EXTEMELY troubled personal life, does he deserve praise, pity, or pilloried (ridiculed publicly)? 127. ###Vote for Key Artist: 128. ###The Movie Scene 129. Summary: "...But "Cooley High" was no exploitation film. Unlike the other black stories being told on screen in the early '70s, this one wasn't about crime, racism, drugs, vengeance, or black-power heroes and heroines who stuck it to the Man. It was just about teens doing what teens do -- hanging out, going to school, going to parties, hooking up, cruising the streets, and dreaming of the future. Yes, there was petty crime and some tragic violence, but they weren't the focus of the story. It was just a slice of life, both specific and universal. As a result, "Cooley High" marked the beginning of the shift in African-American cinema away from blaxploitation toward more diverse stories of black life, although it would take another 20 years for that transition to be fully realized." - 'Cooley High' Is the Most Influential Movie You've Never Seen, by Gary Susman, moviefone.com 134. Audio Clips 135. In film, coming of age is a genre of teen films. Coming-of-age films focus on the psychological and moral growth or transition of a protagonist from youth to adulthood. Personal growth and change are an important characteristic of this genre, which relies on dialogue and emotional responses, rather than action. The main character is typically male, around mid-teen and the story is often told in the form of a flashback. 136. Films in this subgenre include Bambi (1942), Oliver! (1967), American Graffiti (1973), Breaking Away (1979), The Last American Virgin (1982), The Breakfast Club (1985), Stand by Me (1986), Almost Famous (2000), the Harry Potter series (2001–2011), and Moonlight (2016) 137. ***Question: The movie dealt with friendships, loyalty, betrayal, forgiveness, and regrets. Do you have any personal stories to tell that deal with these issues? 138. ###The TV Scene: The Jefferson’s 139. Sample review: Parents need to know that this classic '70s/'80s sitcom -- which follows an African-American couple who move to an upper-class Manhattan apartment in a primarily Caucasian neighborhood -- combines strong racial stereotypes with some positive representations of African Americans and interracial relationships. George Jefferson is stubborn, mean-spirited, and bigoted, and the show uses strong words like "damn" and racial epithets like "honky." The show is generally mild by today's standards, but George's inappropriate behavior and language may send iffy messages to younger viewers. 140. For many black Americans, the news of actor Sherman Hemsley’s death represents a two-fold loss of both an incredible talent and the captivating character that was George Jefferson. By portraying the outspoken and incredibly honest Mr. Jefferson, who was never too shy to speak candidly about race relations in the seventies, Hemsley and his cast mates had a major effect on American television through the hit sitcom “The Jefferson’s.” 141. As the longest-running series with a predominantly African American cast, the show was one of the first to portray a successful black family, paving the way for future sitcoms like “The Cosby Show” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” It was also the first series to prominently feature an interracial couple with the characters Helen and Tom Willis, using its makeup of colorful personalities to create humorous commentary about race in the United States at the time. 142. Making its debut in 1975, the show mimicked its parent series “All In The Family,” but instead focused on a black household. George Jefferson displayed his distrust of white people and shared his views on race in America with a fervor that rivaled Archie Bunker’s comical, yet stinging, opinions about minorities. The show explored issues rarely discussed on television, and the characters’ frequent use of racially charged terms like “nigger” and “honky” placed the series in a class all its own. Although George and his wife Louise “Weezy” Jefferson’s sudden success catapulted them into a predominantly white world, they represented the epitome of black culture. Even the show’s popular theme song was reminiscent of the gospel tunes often heard in black churches. 143. “The Jeffersons” use of confrontational humor and candid commentary that helped ease the discussion of topics like race and class on American television (and beyond) is the cornerstone of the show’s legacy. Its characters opened doors for future black actors, and its success proved that African American sitcoms did, in fact, resonate with general audiences. 144. ***Open Comments: 145. Legacy: We also recognized the familiar in George's willingness to put on airs if it meant seizing an advantage against a rival or gaining one from a potential patron, backing down only when it became clear that his honor or family's well-being was at risk. It was easy to mistake George's hustle as symptoms of a gratuitous and crass materialism, but, his endless striving, the relentless quest to impress the Wittendales of the world or to get into a posh tennis club, even though he had no clue or interest in the sport, was always about survival. Money, in George's mind, represented the best defense against discrimination. "Let me tell you something about people," George tells his old adversary Archie Bunker at a cocktail party. "That bartender's willing to work for me because if you got enough green in your pocket, then black becomes his favorite color." - What 'The Jeffersons' Taught Me About Being an American. SHERVIN MALEKZADEH AUG 7, 2012 146. "...And the previous, say, eight years or so were characterized by efforts to sort of break down institutional racism in America from the Civil Rights Act to desegregation in schools. And so, you had this whole level of black folks who were just being held back by institutional racism, and once those bonds started to break, they could build businesses. They could get great jobs, and they could move into the middle class and upper middle class in a way that they hadn't been able to do before. And "The Jeffersons" in its own way, even though it was also a very typical sitcom, very broad, it also talked about those elements. You know, George had to deal with his friends from the old neighborhood. They would come to visit and embarrass him because he was trying to impress the new wealthy people that he lived with in his new high-rise. And, you know, there was always that tension, and I think some black folks were going through that in their own lives. They could recognize a bit of that in what George Jefferson was doing. - Heard on All Things Considered, NPR 147. ***Question: Was the show too unrealistic/out of reach? 148. ***Vote: 1975 biggest legacy?
The Devil's Mirror and The Snow Queen. A fable for our times from Hans Christian Andersen. Setting our minds free from the MSM Mirror, from its diabolical distortions and disfigurements serving Deep State Power. Thankfully, as Christian Whiton writes, the corrupt commentariat no longer determines public opinion, as the American people increasingly tune out "their screams." Meanwhile, the American Flag takes another beating from the rudderless NFL, from multinational Nike choosing Colin Kaepernick, and from First Man -- a new movie which doesn't allow Neil Armstrong to plant the flag on the moon. Patriots Unite! Also, we sample a high-spirited essay from Conrad Black: "Trump and His Enemies." Blasting Woodward and Bernstein, knocking Mueller, and expecting big action ahead from Utah Huber.
