What has been your experience when people buy a property to detonate and discover that the budget they had planned to rebuild is beyond their means? 2. What characteristics of a property are people looking for if they want to detonate? 3. How can we reimagine the property as a renovator if we have the key fundamentals of what is required? 4. What are the main characteristics we should look for if there is a possibility to renovate?

Writing dynasties (part 3): Felix Francis, Andrew Child/Grant & Rajmohan Gandhi tell We'd Like A Word hosts Paul Waters & Stevyn Colgan about taking on a big book brand or carrying on a family writing tradition. It's different from continuation novels, they say, like when Anthony Horowitz took on Ian Fleming's James Bond character (see episode 4, series 1 of We'd Like A Word with Anthony Horowitz https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/rtTQmLv7Ivb ). These are books, stories and characters with whom they have grown up. But do they try to be exactly like their predecessor or collaborator? Distinctively different? How open are they about it? Is it better to keep it a secret until you're sure that readers will like it? And what if the originator decides he maybe does not want to retire after all? How do they write? And what books are they writing next? Lots of interesting answers in this 4-part episode. Felix Francis is the son of Richard and Mary Francis, who together created the internationally bestselling Dick Francis thrillers, set in the world of horse racing. Felix began contributing to, then co-writing, then solely authoring the Dick Francis books long before his name was on the covers. He's written 16 of them now. Where does Dick end and Felix begin? Listen to find out. Andrew Grant - now also known as Andrew Child - is the younger brother of Lee Child (real name Jim Grant), the creator of the bestselling Jack Reacher series - which you may also know from the Tom Cruise movies or the Amazon series starring Alan Ritchson. When decided he had only 4 more books left in him, he asked his brother Andrew to collaborate with him with a view to ultimately taking over. (Though that particular plot thickens...) But Andrew was already a successful thriller author in his own right. And he has a personal past cloaked in mystery. Rajmohan Gandhi was a teenager when he was inspired to investigate how the world works and to write about it when his grandfather, the Mahatma, Mohandas Gandhi was assassinated in 1948. He spoke to We'd Like A Word at the Khushwant Singh Literary Festival in Kasauli in India. It's hard to think of a more famous forebear than Gandhi. So how does Rajmohan fit into the tradition? Lots of other authors, people & topics get discussed too - Tasha Alexander (the Lady Emily Ashton mysteries), Ben McIntyre, Desmond Bagley, Alistair Maclean, Alan Davies (Just Ignore Him), Arthur Ransome (Swallows and Amazons), Paul Gallico (The Snow Goose), Airey Neave and PD James.

All of us can get focused on our preconceptions as representative of the whole, and since Scotland has some serious personality and history behind it, that country has generated its fair share of stereotypes.  That's applicable to geography, history, personality and the like.  Think of how quickly our mental picture encapsulates our preconceived ideas of all things Scotland, and its amazing exports.Entertainers and actors like Sean Connery, Gerard Butler, Rose Leslie, Ewan McGregor, Robbie Coltrane, Brian Cox, Craig Ferguson, Alan Cumming, Karen Gillian and Billy Connolly.  Musicians and music, like Ian Anderson, Big Country, the Bay City Rollers, The Average White Band, David Byrne, Nazareth, Gerry Rafferty, Bonn Scott, AC/DC's Young brothers and Simple Minds, to name a limited few.  Poets and authors like Robbie Burns, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, J.M Barrie, Kenneth Grahame, Walter Scott, and Alistair MacLean.  And of course, Adam Smith. There are movies and movie visuals, like Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express journey over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.  Mel Gibson's William Wallace, a blue-faced cry of “Freedom!” and the muddy, bloody fields near Stirling.  Brave, with flaming hair and (not quite flaming) arrows, but feistiness galore all the same.  Rob Roy, with Liam Neeson at his best, before everyone started getting kidnapped.  One of our personal pop culture movie favorites, The Highlander, with Sean Connery as co-lead and Queen's soundtrack blazing behind the majesty and mud of the Highlands in the 16th century.  James Bond, as long as we're talking about Mr. Connery.  And, of course, 14,673 versions of Macbeth and Mary Queen of Scots. Our view of Scotland and agricultural exports are no different.  There's the Angus, the Angus and the Angus.  While that might be a breed that has dominated the U.S. beef industry for a really good reason, there are more agricultural exports than that out of Scotland, and we're here to bring you one of them.  And it's not the terribly cute and hairy one that first comes to mind.Join us, for Martha Neale of Windmist Farm in Jamestown, Rhode Island, where she talks about why she enjoys raising the Scottish Belted Galloway cattle.  Whether you call them “Belties,” “Panda Cow,” or the terribly appropriate “Oreo Cow,” they are a fine addition to the Scottish exports we have come to know and love.Links:https://www.jamestowncommunityfarm.com/windmist-farm/ http://afs.okstate.edu/breeds/cattle/beltedgalloway/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Scottish_breeds https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze_Age http://www.angus.org/ https://www.americancowboy.com/ranch-life-archive/top-5-beef-cattle-breeds-24440 https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/400/400-803/400-803.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claiborne_Pell_Newport_Bridge https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agriculture_in_Scotland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Scottish_musicians Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/agriCulturePodcast)

Chapter one; The Snowdonia Killings written and narrated bySimon McCleave A Snowdonia Murder Mystery Book 1 The Snowdonia Killings - Detective Inspector Ruth Hunter lives with the pain of her partner’s unsolved disappearance. Now pushing fifty, the veteran police officer trades in the crime-ridden streets of London for a more peaceful post in rural North Wales. But Ruth has barely settled in when the body of a woman is discovered… with strange symbols carved into her skin. Teaming up with an obstinate deputy, Ruth struggles to eliminate anyone from a long line of suspects. But she’s forced to tear up her shortlist when they discover another slain victim with the same cryptic markings…Can she solve the case before another savage murder? I have loved crime and mystery stories since I was a kid. I worked my way through Enid Blyton's Secret Seven and Famous Five books, before graduating to Ian Fleming and Alistair Maclean. Even when I was writing television scripts I was drawn to write for crime series such as Silent Witness and The Bill. Writing my first crime novel just felt like a natural progression. Having moved from South London to North Wales, I wanted to write about a central character who was an outsider in such a beautiful and mystical part of the country. It's been very exciting having my first novel published and the sales, reviews and general reaction to the book in the last ten days has been amazing. Simon McCleave was born in South London. When leaving University, Simon worked in television and film development. He was a Script Editor at the BBC, a producer at Channel 4 before working as a Story Analyst in Los Angeles. He worked on films such as ‘The Full Monty’ and television series such as ‘Our Friends In The North’. Simon then became a script writer for television and film. He wrote on series such as Silent Witness, Murder In Suburbia, Teachers, Attachments, The Bill, Eastenders and many more. His film, ‘Out of the Game’ for Channel 4 was critically acclaimed – ‘An unflinching portrayal of male friendship.’ (Time Out) ‘The Snowdonia Killings’ is his first novel. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08268L6L8 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08268L6L8 HappyLondonPress - bringing great stories from around the world https://www.instagram.com/ely_landing/ https://www.instagram.com/happylondonpress/ https://twitter.com/HappyLDNpress https://www.happylondonpress.com/

Brett was born and raised in southern California. His parents, avid readers, instilled the love of books in him early on, and there were many days his mom would kick him out of the house in the afternoon just so he would get a little sunshine. He is the USA Today bestselling and Barry Award winning author of over thirty novels, including the Jonathan Quinn series, the Project Eden series, and the time bending Rewinder trilogy. Though he still makes California his home, he has traveled extensively to such destinations as Ho Chi Minh City, Berlin, Bangkok, Angkor Wat, Singapore, Jakarta, London, Paris, and Rome, all of which play parts in his current and upcoming novels. Authors who have influenced him over the years include, but aren’t limited to: Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Alistair MacLean, Robert Ludlum, Stephen King, Graham Greene, Haruki Murakami, and Tim Hallinan. He has three very cool kids—Ronan, Fiona, and Keira—who are all quickly becoming adults, which both excites and unnerves him. As for his neurotic, paranoid, cute Australian Shepherd Maggie, that’s more of a…developing relationship. To learn more about Brett visit www.brettbattles.com.

Where Eagles Dare has a body count of 100 according to MovieBodyCounts.com, which places it at no. 62 in the Top 100, though well in the top 20 for its war film category. The ruins at the start of Navarone are indeed the Parthenon, while those used later in the film seem to be the temple ruins at Lindos on Rhodes.Purchase the DVD from Amazon UK: The Guns of Navarone (1961)
