Dr. Theresa Rohr-Kirchgraber, a California native, is an internist and professor of medicine at the AU/UGA Medical Partnership in Athens, GA. As the president of the American Medical Women's Association, her passion is equity in medicine and healthcare, both for physicians and the community. In this episode, Theresa talks about her unique path to medicine and the resets she has made as a clinician-educator.  Who knew that baton twirling would have the outcome it did!  She shares her strategy to determine the timing for those resets noting it is ok to sometimes need a change of scenery. Her outlook on options as a physician, particularly as a generalist, is a refreshing take.  We recorded this interview in mid-June 2022 prior to the Supreme Court decision but she was already highlighting the powerful need for advocacy in all aspects but particularly equity and women's reproductive health. She appeals "Let's not go backwards." Listen in to learn more about AMWA, the Power of Women book she just read, and the power of a community of physicians.  Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Finding a supportive community can lead to opportunities of "Why Not!" 2. Being a part of larger organization can help sort out the rough edges, give perspective, and be a source of support and strength in numbers. It can give you visibility on a larger scale and help you find your place in the world. 3. Consider a five-year check in to determine if you are getting the same amount of joy out of a role that you were before.  4. Doctors have options and remember there are so few of us around! 5. Know the importance of advocacy- even on the 1:1 level. Advocacy work helps you get a better understanding of how your community works.  6. Be Proactive.

“If we really focus on good care for each other, we are in a much better position to offer good care for the patients. ” - Dr. Natasha W. L Beauvais MD, MPH   What happens in a medical organization when the healthcare team learns how to care for each other, and how does that impact job satisfaction and patient care? How does it impact employee retention? Cohost Dr. Jen Barna talks with Dr. Natasha W. Lewry Beauvais MD, MPH about her practice and implementation of programs that do just that.  As a physician at Northern Virginia Family Practice Associates, a concierge medical practice, Dr. Beauvais shares how her practice has established their positive workplace culture by first recognizing what you can do to make those around you succeed. By asking what you may do to support your coworkers, Dr. Beauvais and Dr. Barna talk about the importance of maintaining high levels of trust throughout your team and how to perpetuate the want to care for your teammates and how that leads to better patient care. How does this approach lead to a shift in mindset so that you may find more joy practicing medicine with those around you?   Book mentioned in the podcast: What Got You Here Won't Get You Here by Marshall Goldsmith Natasha W. Lewry Beauvais, MD, MPH is a physician at Northern Virginia Family Practice Associates (NVFP), a family medicine practice that offers full-service concierge health care in the Northern Virginia area. With more than 16 years of professional experience, Dr. Beauvais understands the importance of providing care for the whole family through every stage of life and values the continuation of long-term patient care.    Dr. Beauvais specializes in serving teenagers, new mothers and those requiring end-of-life care services. A home-birth advocate who has personally experienced home birth herself, she cares for women throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond, helping them connect with their newborns and providing them with breastfeeding support.    In her experience, the early stage of the parent-child connection is a pivotal moment for children's continued growth and wellbeing, especially during the young adult period. In addition to providing resources for families, she encourages parents to keep up with their children's yearly check-ins to help develop a stronger doctor-patient relationship so kids can stay educated about their health and feel supported by their doctors as they grow.   Prior to joining NVFP, Dr. Beauvais served as a physician at Unity Health Care in Washington D.C. and co-founded the Women's Mentoring Program for the American Medical Women's Association. She has received the Joseph Collins Award for Excellence in Arts and Letters and the University of Connecticut Family Medicine Award. Dr. Beauvais holds a Bachelor of Arts in American studies and science from Yale University, as well as a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She completed her residency in family medicine at SUNY Stony Brook and Mount Sinai School of Medicine's Jamaica Hospital Family Practice Residency in New York City. Many of us haven't been in each other's homes for a while now, but pretty soon we'll be getting together inside again. And our children will be heading inside, in their friends' houses.   People store guns inside.   Are you certain that nobody owns a gun in any of the places your child plays?   If they do own a gun, are you certain they store it safely?   If not, you need to ask.   That's one issue we discuss in this interview with Dr. Nina Agrawal, a board-certified pediatrician who has expertise in violence against children. She co-founded the Gun Safety Committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics in New York State, and is leading the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force for the American Medical Women's Association.   Another issue is the gun violence that is primarily faced by children of color, which turns out to affect a far greater number of children.   And how is this all linked to the Peloton recall? You'll have to listen in to find out...   Jump to highlights here: (01:00) Indoor playdates are ramping up...will your child be safe? And today we're going to discuss a topic that I think is about to come into parents' consciousness in a way that it really hasn't as much over the last year. And for some of us, that's a result of our privilege. And I was reflecting that as vaccinations for children become more available, we're probably going to start moving towards indoor play dates without parents being around because when my daughter went into when we went into sort of lockdown, she was young enough that she wasn't...

Dr. Jennie and Dr. Neal discuss how common picky eating is and how to approach picky eaters from a behavioral standpoint. The doctors discuss how to avoid tantrums at meal time, when meal shakes are appropriate and  what to look for when grocery shopping for picky eaters to ensure they have a well-balanced diet and to limit snacking over nutritious meals. Dr. Nikette Neal first became interested in medicine in high school when she watched her father's successful battle with prostate cancer. This led her to attend the University of Central Florida for college, where she graduated with honors in Molecular and Microbiology while simultaneously completing four years of genetics research. Afterward, she attended Ross University for medical school. Her experience there eventually led her to complete her pediatric residency at the University of Nevada, School of Medicine in Las Vegas. She completed this program at the top of her cohort winning the award for “Outstanding Graduating Resident”. Dr. Neal began her career at Pediatric Associates as a general outpatient pediatrician. Since then, she has expanded her skillset by becoming an Assistant Professor and Clerkship Director at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Medicine. In this position, she has received several accolades including the award for “40 Under 40 Black Leaders of Today and Tomorrow”, being featured by the United Way for Women's History Month, and being asked to speak at a regional conference for the American Medical Women's Association. Last year, Dr. Neal was promoted to Lead Physician for the Palmetto Bay office of Pediatric Associates. She currently serves on the Clinician Development Team and the Clinician Advisory Committee. She loves to sing, dance, read, and serve at her church. She is a devoted wife and mother of two. While she is known for her patience, dedication, and attention to detail for each individual patient case, she still finds time to put her family first. She hopes to continue to use her medical skills in order to further the field of Pediatrics, helping to improve patient outcomes and encourage the next generation of physicians. KidzDocTalk is available on all major streaming services including: iHeartRadio, Spotify, iTunes, YouTube and SimpleCast. Dr. Lo developed a healthy mindset toward working hard—and maintaining balance. Today, we learn how to become a reliable and accountable resident that sets us apart from the status quo, how to enhance trust and connection with our patients, and how to know when to step away from medicine to re-energize. Find a mentor that matches both your goals and personality, aligns with your interests, and one who is invested in your success. 3. Continuity is a key aspect in building trust with patients, and motivational interviewing is a key skill for developing these connections. 4. Pay attention to your own self-care and well-being: Remember the importance of relaxation, networking, and keeping in touch with friends outside of medicine.
