We had the pleasure of interviewing John King over Zoom video! John King has spent years cultivating a successful career in country music — he has written No. 1 hits for artists like Randy Houser and anthemic radio jams like “Tonight Tonight,” which was heard on CBS Thursday Night Football broadcasts; he penned Hootie and The Blowfish's first new song after a 15 year hiatus; he's earned an ASCAP Award for his songwriting and much more.On his debut album ‘Always Gonna Be You,' King shines a light on the most important things in life: family and faith. ‘Always Gonna Be You' is available everywhere via Starstruck Records. Listen here: johnking.lnk.to/AGBYOn ‘Always Gonna Be You,' King worked with several producers including Paul DiGiovanni (Boys Like Girls), Jordan Schmidt (Keith Urban, Ingrid Andress), Jason Gantt (Faith Hill) and others who helped him hone-in his eclectic music tastes for an album that plays off of country, pop and rock influences. King lived every song on the album, co-writing each track with songwriters including Josh Miller (Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood, Bebe Rexha), Jamie Paulin (Jon Pardi, Justin Moore, Jack Ingram), Trannie Anderson (Gabby Barrett) and more.‘Always Gonna Be You' is King's personal journey of self-discovery told in chronological order. It kicks off with “Easy,” a laid back tune that speaks to the “anything is possible” feeling of a budding young love. “Try Saying Goodbye” takes an introspective turn and “strikes a universal chord” (Taste of Country) with a warning of what happens when pride stands in the way of a relationship, while the pop-infused “heartbreaking, but catchy breakup song” (The Boot) “Ain't Missing You” reflects back on the end of a relationship. The album takes a hopeful turn with the ever-romantic “For You,” in which King sings of the sacrifices he's willing to make for love. The relationship begins to mend with “'Til It Changes Your Mind,” a raw reflection of the wrong things he had prioritized in life and a promise to change. Listeners follow King to a milestone moment in his life, becoming a proud husband and then father, on “Prettiest Girl In The Room,” while the album closes with “Better Man,” a song that anchors the album as King finds a new purpose in life.Call it a soundtrack to self-discovery. Call it a coming-of-age story performed by a southern son whose country twang is matched by his pop hooks. Whatever the description, 'Always Gonna Be You' is proof there's a new King in town. For information on upcoming shows and more, visit johnkingcountry.com.We want to hear from you! Growing up Black and Brown in a White Town

What's it like growing up Black and brown in a predominantly white town? Joe Sparkman and Julián Esteban Torres López share their experiences of growing up together in the 1990s as teenagers in Nashua, New Hampshire. If you are a fan of the show The Office, you may know that Nashua is the location of one of Dunder Mifflin's branches—the very branch where Holly Flax was working out of before she got transferred to the Scranton branch.  Others may be familiar with Nashua as having been the place where JFK launched his presidential campaign at the steps of City Hall.Or, maybe you heard that Nashua was ranked both in 1987 and 1997 by Money magazine as the best place to live in the United States. Some of you may even know the obscure fact that Nashua was one of the only places in the country (if not the only place, period) where you could find triangular manhole covers covering most of the city's sewer connections. Others may remember the Good Will Hunting scene where Will tells Sean during his therapy session that he wants “to move up to Nashua, get a nice little spread, get some sheep and tend to them.” I remember being in Nashua watching this movie when it came out and everyone in the movie theatre just looked at each other and started laughing with pride, even though the movie was actually making fun of our city. For me, however, my favorite historical fact was that the Nashua Dodgers—a farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s—is believed to be the first professional baseball team based in the United States in the twentieth century to play with a racially integrated roster. The team was based at Holman Stadium in Nashua, New Hampshire, the very stadium that hosted my high school graduation ceremony in 1999. The very same stadium where Joe Sparkman and I used to play football together. Yet, despite Nashua having the history of hosting the first racially integrated U.S. team in modern baseball, the racism in Nashua in the 1990s was still very much alive when Joe Sparkman and I moved to the city to attend Jr. High School and Sr. High School together. So what it was it really like growing up as Black and brown in New Hampshire in the 1990s in a predominantly white state and a city that saw itself as racially progressive? That's what this episode unpacks. And to dig in, I invited one of my oldest and closest friends, Joe Sparkman, to join me for the conversation. Joe Sparkman is an inspiration to others and has been one of the reasons why The Nasiona flourished in the first place. Back in the mid-1990s, when Joe and I were classmates in 8th grade together, Joe gave me my first social justice awakening. In this episode, along with forthcoming episodes, I want to humanize The Nasiona by introducing you to the behind the scenes conversations we have with each other here, and to the people who have made The Nasiona possible.  Joe Sparkman joined the team last year to become our podcast's music producer, and this year he is helping us to officially make our transition into becoming a non-profit organization. In light of this, I wanted to re-introduce you to one of The Nasiona's visionaries. Joe Sparkman decided to follow his dreams in music after he got his multiple sclerosis diagnosis. He started working with Ne-Yo and went on to produce several prominent artists, such as Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Joe, Snoop, Christina Milian, Heather Headley, Emeli Sande, Nicole Scherzinger, Missy Elliot, Prince Royce, among others. He won several awards: Grammy, ASCAP Award, multiple Platinum and Gold plaques, and an African Music Award. After his music career, he continued to dream big and co-founded a million-dollar medical and pharmaceutical company (Medsav). He's currently an advisor to the board at Roche and The Adira Foundation,, a district activist leader for the National MS Society, a member of the Government Relations Advisory Committee, and during the 2020 elections the Georgia Democrats delegated Joe as a precinct chairman. As The Nasiona Podcast‘s music producer, Joe returned to his musical roots, and now he's taking on a bigger leadership role as we take The Nasiona into the next phase so we can more effectively center, elevate, and amplify the personal stories of those Othered by dominant cultures and systems of oppression. Given that Joe and I have a friendship nearing three decades, I thought it'd be worthwhile to give you a glimpse into the kinds of situations that give rise to activists and social justice warriors like myself and Joe. Joe Sparkman and I spoke in July of 2020. This is the 1st part or our 3-part conversation.   The Nasiona Podcast amplifies the voices and experiences of the marginalized, undervalued, overlooked, silenced, and forgotten, as well as gives you a glimpse into Othered worlds. We focus on stories that explore the spectrum of human experiences—stories based on facts, truth-seeking, human concerns, real events, and real people, with a personal touch. From liminal lives to the marginalized, and everything in between, we believe that the subjective can offer its own reality and reveal truths some facts can't discover. Hosted, edited, and produced by Julián Esteban Torres López.  Please follow The Nasiona on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for regular updates: @TheNasiona Original music for The Nasiona Podcast was produced by the Grammy Award-winning team of Joe Sparkman and Marcus Allen, aka The Heavyweights. She teaches nonfiction, fiction, and poetry in the Master of Fine Arts in Writing program at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She has been sober for 21 years.Special mention of Marya's first book, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia written in 1998, when she was twenty-three. What started as a crazy idea suggested by a writer friend became the classic book that has been published in sixteen languages and is taught in universities all over the world. Quote about her book Waiting: In Waiting, Hornbacher uses the story of her own journey beginning with her recovery from alcoholism to offer a fresh approach to cultivating a spiritual life. Relinquishing the concept of a universal “Spirit” that exists outside of us, Hornbacher gives us the framework to explore the human spirit in each of us—the very thing that sends us searching, that connects us with one another, the thing that “comes knocking at the door of our emotionally and intellectually closed lives and asks to be let in.”When we let it in and only when we do, she says, we begin to be integrated people. And we begin to walk a spiritual path. And there are many points along the way where we stop, or we fumble, or we get tangled up or turned around. Those are the places where we wait.Waiting, you'll discover, can become a kind of spiritual practice in itself, requiring patience, acceptance, and stillness. Sometimes we do it because we know we need to, though we may not know why. In short, we do it on faith.=  Marya's website : http://www.maryahornbacher.com/ Help us Keep Tom going – please donate a few bucks/quid/sheckels here at Paypal: Gilwriter@hotmail.co.uk See us every Friday at zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88215498348 Zoom ID 882 1549 348 password Tom Join our Facebook Page ‘Here's Tom with the weather' at https://www.facebook.com/groups/314088509589654 To see past episodes, join the ‘Here's Tom with the Weather' Youtube Channel here: https://youtube.com/channel/UCdW7K07ZZUPZZ-t0s7XmURQ

When he was 10 years old, Marc Blatte's grandfather took him to see his first Broadway show, The Music Man. Some 50 years later Marc was a Grammy-nominated music man himself, and had convinced many people, in song, to upgrade from "Your Father's Oldsmobile" ...and to go "Goldfishin'" for Goldfish snacks. Marc is the Clio-winning composer of, literally, scores of some of the best known jingles Bobby, Brad, Marc, at work at Look Jeanne Neary Look with session singer Lani Groves (with the creative and production direction of Jeanne Neary Look) and top 10 hits of the 80s and 90s...and beyond, often with writing partner Larry Gottlieb. Do you remember holding hands across America as an inspirational movement to raise money and awareness for homelessness and poverty? You were holding hands to Marc's song. Did you sing along with Kenny Rogers when he described the Pride of America...or lipsync to Marie Osmond's top country hit, Read My Lips, or dance to the Four Tops' When She Was My Girl? As the recipient of an ASCAP Award for Most Performed Country Music Song and The Ralph Peer Music Lifetime Achievement Award and now even a successful novelist, Marc is definitely one of my friends in high places...but he's also family: my step-brother. So, I got my "bro" to share the inside track on the evolution of some of these tunes, some pretty funny stories, and some of the life-changing advice he got along the way. You'll hear how: How he pounded the pavement and the doors of publishers for years... and went from janitor to jingle writer...and his suggestions for young artists today; Helping out fellow musicians like Marc Cohn, and getting advice from heads of labels; How he lost hundreds of thousands in a hip-hop label, but gained enough chops to write a hip-hop detective novel, Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed from the experience!; Why he resisted writing a song Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie requested of him...; How he finally came up with Healing Hand, a song that is not only one of the best anthems of today, but one that fulfilled him after all these years... A synchronistic final tale that spanned Sherry Lansing to Joseph Heller.... Please share and review! And Thanks for listening. Thanks ALSO to Euro-Pacific Digital Media for tackling this challenging edit, since I had some issues with the audio recording.

I recently met up with my friend Jared DePasquale who is a phenomenal at scoring, arranging and orchestrating music for audio dramas and tv productions.  He has won multiple awards for his work and was kind enough to talk with me about his musical journey and give insight for you to put into practice if you want to create music for media. Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*John Williams who scored Star Wars and Indiana Jones made me fall in love with music.*Determination beats talent any day of the week.*I wanted to tell a story through music.*Tenacity and ability to take risks allowed me to transition from college into the real world more than talent did.*I applied for grants for USC Film School but missed the deadline. The person I talked with said he had a friend doing what I wanted to do and connected me with composer Joseph LoDuca. He hired me to do some work to reprogram a synthesizer. I worked hard and he kept giving me more responsibility until it turned into a full time assistant job.*Most of the time relationships are going to be what get you the work.*I worked on the tv show Hercules: The legendary Journeys assisting Joe.*A one hour tv show will include about 30 minutes of score and you have a week at most to get it done and move on to the next episode for 22 episodes.*I was a jack of all trades for him on that show. I did temp tracks, programming, played on some sessions, I helped do some orchestration, etc.*When you are an assistant or apprentice to an orchestrator, you have to learn how to think like that person and what their tendencies are.*I also worked on a lot of commercials. The boss sets the tone and is guiding you the whole way and you execute it and he will give you changes to make until it’s where he wants it.*For commercials you usually only get a few hours to create something and turn it in.*You have to learn to go with your instinct and choose a direction and go with it.*The biggest drawback of working for another composer is that it’s hard to find your own voice.*Finding your own voice is a life long journey.*I now score audio dramas.* I hired an agent to pitch my demo reel and it took about 2 years to get work after I left working for Joe.*My first composer job on my own was scoring an indie horror film and I had 3 weeks to complete it.*They liked my work and I kept getting hired to do those kinds of films.*My agent pitched me to do work on audio dramas for Focus On The Family.*I got hired to work on a project and I was able to conduct an orchestra and have since worked on lots of audio dramas for Focus On The Family and other companies.*A 3 hour score for Robin Hood took 6 months to write.*What is the difference between an audio drama and a book on tape?*An audio drama is a fully emersive story like a movie without the visual. It’s professional actors, sound design, music and production crew.*You can stream them through sites like Audible.*Books on tape essentially use canned music that hit transition points from chapter to chapter.*Audio dramas that are 30 minutes will have 15 minutes of custom score.*The old style of scoring is called “The Light Motif” which is: Characters have themes. It’s thematic driven.*Modern scores are very “anti-theme.” Very Static, atmospheric and vibey.*People love a melody.*Audio dramas are looking for big time melodies because characters have melodies.*Not having a visual has made me better as a composer because it has made me think of what the character is thinking about and his motivation. Or what it means when there is a mountain in front of you and you have to make it feel huge because even though you can’t see it, you can feel it.*There’s no such thing as a bad day making music.*I don’t give the word “inspiration” a lot of validity.*If you’re going to write music for a client with a deadline, you have to learn how to write music.*It’s a balance of discipline and understanding your craft and techniques and doing all the hard work that will internalize and come out.*I wrote 50 themes for Robin Hood before it got approved.*If you don’t feel inspired or don’t feel like writing music, go write music.*Keep at it and you will find what you are trying create.*It’s not glamorous and it’s hard work, but it is fun.*You’ll never get there if you don’t do the hard work.*Advice for getting into scoring :*If you’re going to create music for any kind of media, love the story telling process more than you love music.*They are hiring you to understand the story, go deep and emote.*You have to love working with people.*Music for media is a collaborative process.*Starting out as a new composer you might have to work for free on low level entry projects with student film makers.*Connect with your peers that are trying to do their first projects and get experience. That can lead to more work down the road.*Build relationships.*It’s a slow build.*There is always something to learn.*What’s the difference between composing and ghost writing?*Shows require a lot of music in a short period of time. The composer will have a team helping create music but typically only the composer is getting credit for the work, so the other people are called ghost writers.*They do not get credit for making the music and they don’t get paid the same as the composer. You’re basically an independent contractor that is getting paid to do work for hire. You’re signing away all your rights to the music so you get paid one time to create it but no back end royalties.*Jared’s website is www.jareddepasquale.com*Jared’s You Tube Channel Jared is a storyteller.  Music is his language. For over twenty five years Jared has composed the musical scores for some of Western culture’s most celebrated stories and iconic characters. The recipient of numerous awards and critical acclaim, his work is widely recognized for its ability to musically capture complex characters amidst stories that are rich in texture and meaning.Jared has contributed music to over a thousand different projects including scores to The Legends of Robin Hood (Gwilym Lee of Bohemian Rhapsody), The Secret Garden (Dame Joan Plowright of Driving Miss Daisy),  Little Women (Gemma Jones from the Harry Potter series), Les Miserables (Brian Blessed of Star Wars Episode 1), The Trials of Saint Patrick (John Rhys-Davies of Lord of the Rings), Ode to Saint Cecilia (Hayley Atwell of The Avengers series), and Brother Francis (Owen Teale of Game of Thrones).Early in his career, Jared apprenticed under Emmy and ASCAP Award winning composer Joseph LoDuca. With LoDuca, Jared learned the business of composing for A-list projects including the globally syndicated television shows Xena: The Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.  Immediately following his apprenticeship, Jared was recognized by Music from the Movies as one of the three most promising and interesting talents among film composers today. Trevor kind of does it all: he studied classical bass with Rob Kassinger at DePaul University but got a music education degree as well He has played for years in the rock band Molehill but also maintains a full-time performing schedule as a theater musician, and he has a salaried double bass teaching job at Illinois Wesleyan University as well. About Trevor: Based in Chicago, independent artist Trevor Jones works in a variety of musical settings. He performs with regional orchestras throughout the Midwest including the Elgin Symphony and is a substitute with the Grant Park Orchestra. He has also recorded for Realize Records on Chris Bruni’s album Watch Me Burn and Kate Quinby's album Tribute To Water and has co-written and recorded two albums: Tin God and Equinox with his Chicago-based alternative rock group Molehill. Trevor is the upright and electric bassist at The Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, IL and his credits include Jeff®-Award Winning Musical Hero that was premiered in the Summer of 2012 and reprised in 2014 at Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, FL.  On this episode of week 2 of KPFA's fund drive (1-800-HEY-KPFA, 1-510-848-5732): Anthony Brown (photo courtesy of Kathy Sloane, copyright)   We take a look and a journey exploring the Asian American Jazz movement with two major figures in the scene, Anthony Brown and Mark Izu. Percussionist, composer, ethnomusicologist, educator and Smithsonian Associate Scholar Dr. Anthony Brown is a seminal figure in the contemporary California creative music scene, directing the Asian American Orchestra in addition to performing with some of the foremost musicians in jazz today. In 1997, the Asian American Jazz Orchestra was founded under Brown's artistic direction for a federally-funded national educational touring project about the Japanese American internment experience of World War II. After the project ended in 1998, Brown expanded the group and renamed it Anthony Brown's Asian American Orchestra, in keeping with the traditions of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, and Machito and his Afro Cubans. The Orchestra has been featured at the Monterey, San Francisco and Chicago Jazz Festivals, the San Francisco Asian American Jazz Festival, the Earshot Festival, the Smithsonian Institution, and numerous universities and concert halls nationally. (http://www.anthonybrown.org) Mark Izu (photo courtesy of artist)   Mark Izu, known for his integration of jazz with global modalities and instrumentation, composes for orchestra, jazz ensemble, film, theater and dance; plays contra bass, the sheng (Chinese traditional multi-reed instrument) and the sho (Japanese tradition multi-reed instrument). The only symphonic sho composer in the world, Izu premiered Mermaid, an orchestral work for Kent Nagano and the Berkeley Symphony. In 2005, he wrote the sho solo for, The Manzanar Project, also with Nagano. He received a 2009 Emmy for Bolinao 52, a documentary about the Vietnamese boat people. Izu's odyssey began in 1976 with Japanese Imperial court master musician, Suenobu Togi, and continued until Togi's death over 30 years later. Izu's CD, Threading Time features the final recording of Togi Suenobu with Zakir Hussain (tabla), and was released in Tokyo. It received Tokyo's Critic's Choice for Top 10 jazz releases of 2008. Izu's film scores include Academy Award-winning Days of Waiting; Emmy; Award winning, Return to the Valley; and a new score for silent masterpiece, Dragon Painter. His theater scores were performed at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and Sundance Festival. He was awarded a Dramalogue Award and two INDIE Awards for composition. Izu has received three Meet the Composer Commissions, a Japan/US Creative Artist Fellowship, and an ASCAP Award. Izu is a founding faculty member of Stanford University's Institute of Diversity in the Arts. He lives with his family in San Francisco. (http://www.aokizu.com/) Anthony Brown and Mark Izu will be in studio to talk about their longtime work, love, way of life: Jazz. We'll listen to some of their work, and other important Asian American Jazz artists. As a thank you gift to our listeners who decide to pledge during the show hour, we offer the documentary on Anthony Brown and Mark Izu, Don't Lose Your Soul (dir. Jim Choi, Chihiro Wimbush).
