Ava is finishing up her senior year of HS. She has made lots of friends, great memories and left her mark over the last four years. She decided to take her talents and further her education in a place where the syrup flows like a chilled desert spring. A place where beards, flat brimmed hats and modern hippies can be seen instinctively frolicking the campus quad. Perhaps there are more cows in Vermont than people, but it doesn't stop the beaming pride students and citizens of Vermont hold near and dear. Ava will be no exception. Ava talks about the next four years and what that might look like. She might even start up rock climbing so that she can fit in better with the locals. In fact Ava hopes to get really close with the rocks over the next few years. If the mosquitoes don't chase her out of the state, she sees herself working towards a degree in Environmental Science. She loves the planet and wants to preserve the future for generations to come. Although 20-degree weather is known as t-shirt weather in Vermont, Ava plans to make the most of her experience regardless of the temps. Listen in this week as Ava, this weeks "Leader Next Door" shares her perspective on this generation. So grab your maple syrup tap and dig into this weeks tribute and conversation with the great, Ava T.

A few listeners had questions and comments, which led us to a week's worth of very confusing strips, even by this ridiculous comic's standard. Our goal was to answer their questions about what in the specific fuck was going on. There was a question about swings, and why the characters were on swings, and how old were they exactly, and also, seriously, what the fuck is up with this goddamned strip. Seriously. How do you go from a standstill in one panel to nearly flying off the swings in the next? But let's backtrack to the beginning of this story, a couple days earlier, where World's Most Romantic Couple are drawn as Hobbit-sized children, and they speak only of how they will have babies later. This leads us to our introduction to Edda's mother Juliette, who is infuriated (?) to hear that her daughter and her daughter's friend are discussing having babies at whatever age or ages they're currently portrayed at. Five? Eleven? Fifteen? Your guess is as good as ours. Is a conversation between two children about possibly having children when they get older awkward and gross? What? Are you new here? Of course it is! The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: The first three are here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1571521012818415616?s=20&t=5TA0D6noFIhYnmbim7Bf1w). I almost did not publish this episode. In fact, after I'd finished creating it, I was pretty certain I was not going to publish it. It felt awkward and raw and . . . maybe too vulnerable? But today, I was sorting through episodes—some written, some recorded, some still just scribbles in my journal—in an effort to decide which one to share next, I remembered this one existed. I listened to the unedited and realized . . . I think this is something that needs to be shared. It's perhaps a bit rougher than some of my other episodes. It's fittingly uncertain, even in cadence. But it speaks a truth that feels worth sharing. Whatever it is you're going through . . . there are gifts in the difficult parts, if only we are open to receiving them. Alright, friends. This one's a doozy. On April 21st, 2018, after one of the scariest nights of my life, I made the decision to quit drinking—for good. This is that story. Not only what happened that inspired me to choose sobriety, but also how I did it—how I'm doing it: the tools and resources that made this new freedom possible. That night wasn't the first time I'd questioned whether drinking was benefiting me. If I'm honest, I think I've been asking this question since at least 2014. That means it took four years of internal conflict and cognitive dissonance to finally make the leap. During that time, notably, my drinking didn't get worse. But, more importantly, it didn't make my life any better. For a long time I didn't quit because I didn't want to be that person who people pitied because she was dry. I also couldn't fathom going the rest of my life without a glass of wine. Nine months later, it feels like undiluted freedom. I'm clear headed and happy, racing toward my goals and feeling oh so aligned with this strange path I've chosen that seeks to share weird spiritual wisdom with everyone I meet. Merry everything and happy always! We made it. Through the joy and the stress and the family drama. And now we get to look forward to 2019. And there's something about it. It just feels like it's going to be a good year. And I'm stoked to end 2018 with this interview. Jenipher Lyn and I met online in a group Michelle Ward created years ago called the When I Grow Up Clubhouse. In 2013 (ish) I ran an online class for the Christian season of Lent called Be and asked Jen to teach a week of the course. Over time, we began to realize that we had a lot in common (like tons of anxious energy and a passion for creating something bigger than ourselves) and began to Skype every few weeks. The rest, I guess, is history. In this episode, we talk about finding our purpose, oversharing, and the annoying need to make it work as workaholic passion people. Jen shares vulnerably about intense anxiety she had while she was pregnant and what running a business looks like after having a baby. We talk about how we gained confidence as moms and as humans. I'm inviting us all to keep them cracked, even just slightly. So that the light can get in.   I hope it encourages you. I hope you walk away feeling a littler lighter and a little more hopeful. I thought it'd be good to share way too much right out the gate of season two. I mean, if you're a new listener, you gotta know what you're getting into, right? This episode is not overtly spiritual. It doesn't hit you over the head with abundance mindset. But then again, we owe $335,000 in student loan debt and I'm still smiling, so maybe it does. A correction and a couple of notes— I say with confidence that Dr. Phil asks "who's the doctor?" when confronted with someone who has over $150,000 in student loans. But that is not so! It's Dave Ramsey who says that. That was a strange Freudian slip. And in fact, I wasn't talking about Dr. Phil at all. But when you think about it, they're kind of the same person. When talking about our rent, I accidentally say we owe $6,000 a month. I do correct that one! And laugh hysterically in the process. Paying $2,000 a month in rent is quite steep, but it could be worse, right? Listed below is the bounty of resources I mention in this episode. So grateful for the feedback and encouragement I've received since releasing this episode last week. Truly grateful for the Throwing Light tribe.
